  1. Someone got in his head when they questioned why a string bean of a human can keep up with him off the tee Suggested maybe trying a different ball, something that would flight down easier than a V1x. Solution? New driver. I COULD SELL AN IGLOO TO A PENGUIN!

    How'd you play?

Absolutely terrible day. I think I pulled a @Shankster and quit for 20 minutes after I left the course. By the time I got back home, I was already analyzing what went wrong to prepare for my next “adventure”. After extensive analysis, I realized that hitting 4 inches behind the ball was not producing optimal results. The cause of this ineptitude is pending investigation....

    How'd you play?

It was beautiful today - nearly 70 and I played for the first time in almost two weeks. My back has been really bad but I felt great today. I had no idea what to expect but I hit the ball quite well and I was able to put together a good round. I was striking the ball really well right off the bat but I wasn't making many putts on the front. On the back nine I got tired and wasn't hitting quite as well but I made more putts. Best shot of the day was 2 Crossover. Par 3 9th hole - 197 but was into the wind and playing 217. It's hard to see in the picture but the ball is 3 paces behind the flag and the pitch mark is pin-high right about four feet. So happy with that shot. The other shot that made me happy was from the middle of the fairway on the 11th. I had just over 100 yards and I hit a little knockdown PW. It was playing into the breeze and it came off just as I pictured it (the Blueprint irons are amazing!). The pitch mark is just past the hole. Unfortunately, I missed both putts [emoji23] I've also played the Titleist EXP balls the last two rounds and I like them. I will be interested to see what they become in terms of marketing. 67 FIR 8/13 GIR 12/18 Putts 26

I was a really lousy golfer back in the early '90s, probably a 30 'cap. I don't remember the course at all. That would be my ex-wife! But probably. Her family had a farm in the shadow of Davis-Besse, and her sister was a grade school teacher in Port Clinton. She would be long retired by now. What I do remember about that visit was that she drug me kicking and screaming to Cedar Point... I hate roller coasters!!!!

  11. Had to go back and play #13 and 14 since I came across a slow 4some . No big deal as course was empty. Roll off 18 and drive back to 13 box. See a solo walker on 13 so I layed back, hit my ball when he was walking to the green, then scanned the pond for balls before I drove to my ball. As I was driving to the green he was teeing of on 14. I finished my hole and drove over to 14 box and stayed back behind the box as It was my last hole and didnt want to push. He was actually. at his ball ready to hit then backed off and started waving me on as he walked away from his ball . I yelled and waved go ahead. He continued to wave me one as he went behind a tree. I needed par for 79, my last hole. so I drove out and got within good earshot and said it was my last hole so go ahead. He was very persistent on me going through and kept telling me to go hit and was waving his arms. I repeated that it was my last hole and wasnt playong through. It sounded like he said im not hitting". So I said "we are going to be here awhile then as Im not playing through with you in the fairway". and drove back to wait and see from the tee box. He hit and moved on. For some reason he was super persistent on me playing through even after I told him it was my last hole.I hate playing through with someone in the fairway and will never ask someone to play through at that point. If he didnt want a solo cart behind him, hit your tee shot, them wait on box.

  14. Thanks guys!! Only one range session so far but it was flying higher and way past the XR16 (which has since been sold!). Hits felt *solid*! I'd actually had a chance to try the Tensei shaft during a driver fitting last year, so I already knew I liked it.

  15. I think both players were trying to be considerate, but each player had a "selfish" thought at the same time. For the walker, he didn't want to feel pushed by a player in a cart. For the OP, he doesn't like to play through someone in a fairway. And it sounds like each player got a bit stubborn..."I'm not hitting"...." well I'm not hitting until your're gone, so we'll be here for a while". I'd say equal credit for being considerate, and equal blame for being stubborn.

Same 9 I shot 2 over on last week, I shot a 5 over with 2 3-putts. 42 (par 37) 6/7 FiR 3/9 GiR 16 putts Last week, I would've missed the ocean if I was teeing off from the beach. This week I hit all but one fairway (tried to cut the corner with a 5W but didn't quite carry it, so driver was flawless) but nothing else was working. What a crazy, dumb game!

  17. Yesterday, I finally had a chance to test and game the MAXFLI golf balls @ Trophy Club's Hogan Course from the Copper Tees @ approximately 6,650 yards. Fun fact - this is the only golf course Ben Hogan ever designed for a fee and is considered his "singular design" work. He consulted on Colonial and Shady Oaks, but as a favor to his mentor, Marvin Leonard. Weather was in the mid-60s and the wind wasn't really a factor, maybe only blowing up to 10 mph occasionally. It was cooler, so I think my distance was down maybe 1/2 club length through the bag. My recorded statistics; Fairways = 57% GIR = 56% Putts = 29 Overall, I didn't play that great only scoring a bogey golf 90, with a 46 on the front with the Tour ball and a slight improvement of 44 on the back with the Tour X. I drove the ball pretty straight with both balls, the Tour and Tour X, but the X gave me a little more distance. Maybe because it warmed up in the afternoon? I did hit two really bad shots with each ball - a shank leading to a snowman on a Par 5, Hole #6 with the Tour and a stone topped 7-iron that I splashed into a creek on my approach with the Tour X @ Hole #14 from 150 yards. Here's an approach shot that I hit on #1 with a 7-iron from 145 yards out of the rough, slightly uphill with the Tour ball. The ball spun well enough, IMO, based on it not releasing more than 12 feet from a flier lie. I missed the birdie, though, much to my chagrin. Greens were running pretty darn fast. Here's a full pitching wedge that I hit from 118 yards on #10 to a front pin with the Tour X ball. The pitch mark is only about 3-feet away from where the ball stopped, so that's not bad for a full swing with a 46-degree PW. I like that result. Ball flight was a high draw that I carried 120 yards just past the hole. In my opinion, the MAXFLI 3-piece Tour felt slightly harder than the 4-piece Tour X, but its ball flight was comparable. The Tour's performance compared favorably to my usual gamer, the 3-piece K-Sigs. My stock shot is a medium-high draw, and MAXFLI Tour X also performed well when compared to most other premium balls I've gamed; ProV1, TPX5, Chrome Soft, etc. The Tour ball didn't appear to fly as far when struck well with my driver nor spin as much as the Tour X. But, I'm basing this opinion only on my observations and results with pitches, chips, and short-iron approaches. Both are good balls and more than adequate for mid-handicappers like me. If you can spend $35 for a dozen golf balls, I'd recommend saving a few bucks @ DICK's for the 4-piece Tour X rather than dropping $50 for other super-premium offerings. In my limited experience, the 3-piece Tour is comparable to my K-Sigs, IMO, and isn't worth spending the additional money on ($2.92 per ball vs $1.00 each). But, $24 for two dozen, 3-piece urethane balls is hard to beat! Thank you, Costco. Based on my on-course results, ball flight, and performance, your scores shouldn't drop off much, if at all, with MAXFLI golf balls. Given a choice, I prefer the Tour X ball for its slightly softer feel and its better distance off the tee. I'm actually surprised they're both priced the same @ DICK's.

    Throttled Driver

No doubt we've all experienced a long par 3 hole where distance (particularly into the wind or up hill) makes everything but your big stick not long enough. #15 at Desert Hills is such a hole. 210 (white)/253 (blue), slightly uphill, with a large bunker protecting over half of the front. Yesterday, the white tees were back further than usual and with the blue pin location, our yardage devices were showing 236 yards to pin. We had a light headwind at about 5 mph. Even on windless days and normal tee location, this hole is a challenge. I normally hit my 3w which I can carry about 205-210 yards. Instead of trying to mash it, I opted to try a "throttled" drive... which, only seems to work out half the time I try it... yesterday's attempt short left How many of you use a driver for these in between yardages and do you have success doing so? What tips/techniques do you use? I just try to swing slower, similar to a checked approach shot, but my results are very inconsistent.

  20. I'd agree. Targeting the pin doesn't happen that often on tour let alone for a player who isn't scratch. Want to test the theory? Place a ball in the middle of the green and putt. Then record your score with the assumption that you hit the green in regulation. I have my women's team do this for 9 holes. Their score from the middle of the green is always better or the same as their regular score and very often they shoot par with the middle of the green approach. Want to take a guess how many of my players average right around par? Hmmm.... Ego and emotion are tough opponents.

  21. To add to what I said, if I'm walking, and have 5 holes remaining, I really don't want to stand and wait on the tee while the guy behind me plays to the green and putts out, I'd rather keep walking. When the player behind me (in a cart) is ready to hit, I'll be sure to get well off to the side, and keep careful watch for the incoming ball. I'll resume walking, probably only get 50 or 100 yards further before the cart gets to the shot, and repeat the process. To me, that's the right way for a cart player to play through a walker, without disturbing either one's pace too much. I know there are differing opinions on this, that's just my personal preference.

  27. Grabbing a late and quick lunch, put the tournament on and after about 2 minutes I see Patrick Reed in what looked like a bunker with the cameraman zoomed in on him taking “practice swings” while addressing the ball and moving sand away from his ball, not once but twice. Am I wrong in thinking this should be a penalty?
    2 points
  28. Here's my update: For me, all the SS practice lead to longer drives (15 - 20 yrds) when I hit the ball well, less of a change with irons. At first, I was a little wilder, but I think that was more to do with the faster swing speed causing a swing fault (a bit of a sway) to become a little worse. I spent some time slowing down my backswing and lost that extra distance temporarily, but once I got used to that, the extra distance returned and I was less wild (most of the time). For me, as a newer golfer, the bigger benefit was all those extra swings I never would have taken really helped me improve my feeling for what a swing should feel like, if that makes sense. Overall, my scoring didn't improve much - I still have a lot of "work" to do especially with those approach shots, but I felt more comfortable and confident hitting the ball. The other good thing is the speed came back almost immediately. I finished my last full week 5/17 (week 22 overall, week 8 of protocol 3), did a few one-off maintenance sessions until mid-July, and restarted at the beginning on 10/30, and by the second week, I was back where I left off in May.

  29. I completely get your 'stubbornness'. I'm a guy that will put my stubbornness up against anyone's! I beat the hell out my concepts or those of other people. It is a real struggle for me to be wrong but my game and coaching have greatly improved as I have changed my perspective from nothing works to how can I break/challenge/disprove my beliefs today. As a result, I have great certainty in what I have chosen to teach in both technique and strategy. One of the concepts that greatly helped me was the idea that we can prepare our skills, recognition and responses to known events or challenges. Many people want to believe that there is tremendous variability in the game of golf. Many people believe the same about their careers. The reality is that most of us in work & sport face the same identifiable challenges with great regularity. If we can prepare our response and execution we can be much more successful than when we constantly feel like things are different. If won't go on and on about this topic but I believe that watching pilot videos on Youtube is one of the best examples. They can fly to a million different places but they face the same set of tasks every time they fly. How do they handle this? They have checklists and prepare for each flight like it is the first! We can play golf the same way as long as we have a reasonable set of skills, create our own check lists (known strategy), and practice our response and execution. There is a reason why Tiger always looks calm - he has prepared for the very moment and his skills travel the world very well. Tiger shouldn't be looked at different - he should be seen as the norm!

  30. Knowing GSwag personally, I can tell you that you're WAY off base. "Common denominator"? No crap! These are HIS stories so obviously he would be the common denominator. What I can say about GSwag is while he is very forward with his opinions and he wears his heart on his sleeve, you also won't find a more passionate person about the game nor a more fun person to play with. It's one thing to tee it up on a random day and hack around... it's another to play in a sanctioned tournament and take 6 or more hours to play... especially in heat indexes over 100*. There is absolutely zero reason ANY round of golf should take more than 4 hours other than a complete lack of and total disrespect for the game, your playing companions, and other people on the course. I walked off during an Amateur event once because after hitting my shot OB and taking the appropriate drop, one guy in our group went ape s*** on me about how I was in violation of the rules, yada yada yada. Keep in mind this was the guy who brought his annoying ass "trophy" wife with him and she didn't shut up the entire day... she talked non-stop during everyone else's swing, she got out and wandered endlessly... she drank to an excessive amount. So after the 10th hole where my OB drop took place, I quietly grabbed my back and walked back in. I simply wasn't going to put up with him or her for the back 9. Funny thing is my cart partner (who was leading at the time) came in 2 holes later. He was done with them as well. Tournament promoter told us he had received previous complaints and this guy would be banned from future events. We never saw that clown again.

  31. Hey, I'd purchase and play the super-premium balls if money were no object. I'm convinced the 4-layer offerings give me more pop off the tee and have better control around the greens. I'd get on a Trackman, get fitted for a ball, and choose my gamer based on real data if I were playing competitively. My HDCP index is 13.8 and I'm on a budget, so I'm happy with my K-Sigs. The MAXFLI Tour X is a better ball, IMO, but the Tour isn't necessarily an upgrade. I make this assertion only on what I see and "feel". I don't expect to satisfy MGS's engineers with my feedback. Maybe I should submit to a blind test? Feel is innate. For whatever reason, the more layered balls "feel" softer to me. Although I'm not sure my touch is sensitive enough to delineate between a ProV1 and ProV1x off the clubface. Put it this way - I won't purchase the Golf Pride ALIGN feature in my MCCs again because I don't think it's worth an extra $2 per grip. I don't "feel" the difference nor think ALIGN gives me an advantage over my regular MCCs or UTx grips. But, then again maybe I'm just a cheap bastard.

  32. It’s interesting to me how subjective feel is. Both you and I feel the Tour X feels softer, the test group consensus is that it feels firmer. You are fine with it in regards to performance. I’d quit playing golf if I had to use it. The x - I could game the Tour although I would be giving up something to my gamer with it. Based on the yardages that you’re reporting we have similar swing speeds and yet I’m 12 yards shorter with the X than my gamer off the driver. 8 yards shorter with it than the Tour. That tells me there’s something different about our swings that produces differing results - unless there’s some difference in our equipment that produced those differing results. Nice write up and thanks - I hope your weather warms up. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  33. This is good advice for 5-handicappers too, at least until you get inside short-iron range. You want the bulk of your misses to be on the green, if you can. If you start aiming at tucked pins, you don't have to miss by much to be off the green. Most of us are much better off 60 feet away and putting (10 yard pull after aiming at the middle of the green) than 30 feet and chipping (10 yard push, aiming at the flag). Say you get up and down 30% of the time, pretty decent for an "average" golfer, so 70% you'd take 3 strokes when chipping. Will you 3-putt 70% of the time?

LMAO Heres how fancy I get with my “drawers”... I was in Costco the other day with my brother in law (I’m up on Long Island for the holidays visiting my family, and that’s how bored I am not being able to play golf), and I decide to buy underwear. Kirkland brand white crew necks 6 in a package, $16. and they didn’t have the tightness whiteish I buy,. No way I’m paying that much. I go home, look online and my go to Hanes or FTL are about $23 a pkg. At this point I’m like “wow, what happened to the price of cotton?” Long story short, my niece tells me to try KMart. I go online Hanes package of 7 tops or bottoms $7,50 per. 15% off and free shipping over $35. Ended up with 3 packages of each, a 10 pack of sweat socks for $44.Plus a bunch of free Michael Jordan trading cards, lol. That $44 will buy you about one and a half pair of Tommy Johns, buddy.

  45. The hardest hole on our course is better defined by the one that the guys complain about the most. It's a par 4, 405 yd. (from the whites) uphill fairway and elevated green that is our #3 handicap hole. Most often the green's crew sticks the pin in the upper right. Most try to aim their drives just to the left of the first set of bunkers, the more conservative players will just layup with a fairway wood to in front of bunkers. More often then not I walk off with a bogie - this hole is definitely playing with my head.

  47. This isn't the typical Bama team this year. While they have the go-to WR and shifty RB, they don't have the OL or DL to push people around like they're accustomed to. While they usually plug-and-play new 4 & 5 star recruits each year on the defense, sometimes those guys don't pan out as well as you'd like. Plus when you lose coordinators every year, you're bound to take a small step back every now and then. I see this as the opposite, this is the year to bet AGAINST Bama. It will be interesting to see what Tua decides because I don't think Saban wants to go back to a pocket passer now that he's tasted the success of a dual-threat QB. Isn't baby Tua pretty good as a QB as well? I don't think this current backup is going to appease Saban next season. Honestly, I'd probably bet against Bama in the bowl game because they'll probably play a Michigan team in a non-NYE 6 bowl and I don't know if they'll mentally up for it. I don't recall a Bama defense giving up so many points to LSU and Auburn in one season. That alone tells me that they're off. They had their chance to hang with LSU and couldn't pull it off. And if you think they can hang with Ohio St on a neutral site...you might want to check out some Ohio St games. Ohio St looks like Bama teams of the past that light you up on the scoreboard and then demoralize you on defense.

  48. Like Rev, I stopped with the protocols around the start of the golf season. I did the maintenance program for a while, but with the summer and fall long task of moving my mother-in-law, I put training to the side. I went to the range this past weekend with the speed radar to see where I'm still at and have lost some of the gains, 4 mph to be exact. I'm still swinging it faster than I was at the beginning and have seen good results on the course. My accuracy took a hit for a while, but started coming around the longer I worked to get my sing in order. When I hit it well, the results are still in the 240/250 range. My biggest problem has been between the training and working on my iron play I have developed a negative AOA. I'm teeing the ball lower to accommodate the change, but I feel this has caused more spin to creep in and a loss of potential distance. On the positive side, I have been playing better and more consistent golf this year. My ball striking has improved and I've seen quite a few scores in the 80's. I plan on getting back in the program soon, I have been recently set back by a really fun case of allergies. Funny story, on my last trip to the range I had my heaviest speed stick in the bag and my radar and was hitting balls when the gentleman driving the ball picker came up to talk to me. He asked what they were and we had a nice conversation about MyGolfSpy and SuperSpeed and he asked if the radar would work for left hand swings. I assured him they would and proceeded to show him. I was still able to hit 102 mph from both sides. I'm definitely a believer that if you want to gain speed, SuperSpeed is the way to go. Sent from my SM-N975U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  49. I posted a lengthy update a month or so ago. Readers Digest Version: For me I certainly have seen on course improvement and increased distance. I stopped doing protocols in the summer (just too hot and too busy). Since then I’ve seen a decrease i distance but I’m still faster and longer than I do as when I started maintaining where I was at the end of the level 1 protocols so 5 mph faster and 10-15 yards longer with driver, half a club with approach shots. I’m way more consistent with my ball striking. I look like a former good golfer when you play with me now. I played with a guy whom I hadn’t played with in 5 years on Monday. After 10 or 11 holes he said, “I thought you hadn’t been playing much.” (That was true, it was my first 18 in November). “You look like the same old Rev to me.
