  2. I know sticking to one brand goes against the MGS way, but I really enjoy it. I'm from Chicago and it's fun celebrating a classic brand based out of my city that really makes great stuff. They lack the credit they deserve and I don't mind the fact that just about all of it can be found at a great price. So here's what I'm working with: Driver: Wilson Cortex 9.5* with Graphite Design G-60 Red X-stiff Fairway: Wilson FG Tour F5 17* with Axivcore Black X-stiff (at 16*) Hybrid: Wilson M3 21* with Aldila Phenom 85 Stiff (at 20*) Utility: Wilson V4 Utility 4 iron with Aldila Green 105S Irons: Wilson FG Tour V6 5-GW, S300 AMT Wedges: Wilson PMP 55, 59 KBS Hi-rev 2.0 Putter: Wilson Staff 8802 milled Next moves: Wilson Staff Model Wedges once I can get them in custom shafts. The stock are too light. I also need the new utility but haven’t been able to test it yet. Also, my bag is from Shapland Bags. They're an up and coming name in the golf industry that everyone needs to check out. Their bags are phenomenal. Let me know what you think! Thanks, Peter

  4. Got a solid 1.5 hours of short game practice today. It was freezing but I managed. These were some 30 yard 2 hop checkers down wind! Love that big first hop I get with these on the finesse shots, the a grab on bounce two with very minimal roll out. These were from 40, same thing, a nice big first bounce then stop. I would expect a touch more roll out on an actual green, or perhaps some backspin. These were about 15 feet high 56° into the wind. Here we have some 50 yard shots, same deal, flighted down... took me a while to dial up the 50 yard shot, I ended up switching to the 52° because they started to get caught up in the wind with the 56°, but I could flight them nicely with the 52° as well. Dispersion in the picture is from the 56°, just not where I’d like it, but wind definitely had a factor. I also hit all sorts of touch shots around the green, flops, low crispy ones. I actually backed up a high spinner 20 yard shot. Haven’t had that shot in my bag for a good while, and this is with severely worn out wedges

MPR is a living legend with all of his DIY threads, his single digit charge, and the time he gets to spend with Kirke. Cobra Connects are just a blast to be a part of and have been awesome. If you look deep enough, the original introduction threads are classics. If I recall correctly, @GolfSpy MBP set a new standard. @PMookie just left a nice reminder in his Valentine's Day message, the jokes thread is a must read. While I am certainly biased, I am a fan of the Hard Rock Challenge. @PING Apologist #9 had his calling card with the safety equipment. There are some pretty great stories of guys trading in their ProVs for Callaway HX Hots, Top Flites, Pinnacles for a round or two of misery.

Just wrapped up testing and baselined with my 410 as suggested. Longest with 410 was 225, avg 217. Learned that from following this group. mavrik with evenflow riptide 50 shaft longest was 237 with ball speed consistently 130 avg 227. Tried all three heads, multiple shafts l, threw in the speed zone and the mavrik max with set up just clicked for me. The fitter and I were both floored at how different the results were vs the other combinations . Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

    How'd you play?

Really solid round, best I’ve played in a long time. Conditions were strange, very fine misty rain for most of the day along with blustery wind. My whole game was solid. 12/14 fairways, 12 GIR, no 3 putts and shaved the hole lots of times. 2 birdies, 5 bogeys and the rest pars. Course management and concentration were both better than normal. Getting the report in early as we got around in 3.5 hours (as a 3) would have been even quicker but we ran into the back end of the field for the last few holes.

  13. The professional game isn't broken; just changed. You will not see many short hitters on tour in the future; there are just too many good long hitters. Sure, talented young players ala Furyk/ZJ and Luke Donald will try because of the money, but there are so many players coming up that that hit the ball far that the short hitter will not be able to compete week in - week out. The short hitters will drop out, and the rest of the field will be bunched up. There will always be the Cameron Champs in the field, but everyone else won't be that far behind. This is the main reason we are seeing a spike in the average driving distance today. It's always fun to watch players hit the ball a long way, but I really miss the players that worked the ball. Corey Pavin was awesome!

  15. I got what I think is a great deal today on TGW. I bought the Titleist hybrid 5 stand bag for $159 (I believe it's the one @Golfspy_CG2 posted a photo of on the previous page). The all black he has was $199, but the black with red trim and white apparel pocket where the Titleist logo is was $40 cheaper. Either one was a good price though, they're selling for $229 at PGASS and Budget Golf. TGW ships it free also. When it comes I'm thinking of having my name and club logo embroidered on the ball pocket. My pro said they will do it at the $30 it costs them. Getting my name on a bag isn't something I'd do on Long Island, you rarely see it there except on the bags of really good players. Down here in Myrtle Beach it's very common though, the majority of guys I play with have had it done. The bag drop guys both at my club and others in the area say it makes easier for them.

  18. Often lost in the shuffle of physical fitness is the concept of proper recovery. We spend time in the gym lifting or doing cardio work, grinding away trying to hit new personal records or lose a few pounds. We try to eat right. But how many of us actually care about our recovery, specifically sleep, and the quality of it? Athletic recovery is one of the primary focuses of the WHOOP strap, one of the many fitness trackers now available to consumers. The WHOOP, in particular, is a favorite of Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and several others on the PGA Tour. While my golfing abilities will never match those of Rory or JT, I invested in a WHOOP strap near the beginning of 2020 and have had just over a month to put it through its paces as a 24/7 fitness tracker. NOT JUST ANOTHER TRACKER I’ve used a wearable fitness tracker or pedometer in some form for almost five years now, but I’ve never found them to be very useful in my day-to-day life. As an early riser, the driving factor for the purchases of my most recent straps (the Xiaomi Mi Band and the Xiaomi Mi Band 2) was their ability to be used as a soundless, vibration alarm clock so as to not wake my wife. While the Mi Band 2 is capable of heart rate monitoring, I have never used the feature for any meaningful purpose. The WHOOP strap is different in that while it collects heart rate data, it does so much more frequently than other fitness trackers, around 100 times per second. The metrics and recommendations the app creates are based around these measurements. WHOOP specifically looks at resting heart rate, heart rate variability and sleep. From those metrics it determines a bunch of statistics, such as daily strain, calories burned, sleep need, sleep efficiency, and an overall recovery status. Another major thing setting WHOOP aside from other trackers is its pricing model. While the band is “free,” month-to-month subscriptions start at $30, and the initial commitment is for six months. There are plenty of referral codes available online for a free first month, but you are looking at a minimum $150 investment. Once the six month period is up, longer memberships that drive the cost down to as low $18 per month are available if you’re so inclined. If you don’t have an active membership the app doesn’t collect data, essentially turning the WHOOP device into a fancy, but useless, strap on your wrist. WHAT IT DOES WHOOP draws its conclusions about you largely through its monitoring of your heart rate and heart variability (HRV). HRV measures the time between heart beats. As you wear your strap, the WHOOP algorithm adapts to your individual performance to give you accurate insights into how much strain your workouts are causing, how recovered you are, and how you are sleeping. The WHOOP can automatically detect workouts or increased activity through increases in your heart rate. You can also tell the app to start logging an activity, or enter your activity after completion if desired. It does not appear that these entries make differences in the logging of your statistics, but rather provide the ability to go back in time and see how strenuous a particular workout was. If you have a set workout schedule, you can tell the app what days you need to perform your best. Each evening the app will tell you when you should be in bed to perform up to your standards the next day. Upon waking the application will ask you some questions about the previous night’s sleep, including how you feel after waking up, whether you drank before bed, etc. WHOOP uses this information to find trends in how your sleep and recovery is affected by external factors. THE GOOD I have found the recovery metrics to be pretty accurate. Generally, when I feel good upon waking, the app corroborates how I feel. The app is easy to use and navigate (I’m an Android user). The algorithm for calories burned seems to be fairly accurate based upon my experiences with food logging and weight loss. The strap is charged while you are wearing it through the use of an external battery pack. This allows the WHOOP to truly have 24/7 insight into your heart rate. The band is fully waterproof and I’ve had no issues while showering with the band. The battery pack is not waterproof, however. THE BAD Battery life. For a tracker that provides no screen or any other features, the battery lasts less than five days. It would be nice to have a small display for the current time. Right now, I’m continuing to wear my Mi Band 2 just for the watch. The charging pack does not hold a charge. The pack is only meant to transfer power to the band, and not store it. It goes dead after less than a day, so you must remember to charge the pack on the day you want to also charge the watch. This was majorly disappointing. The strap took about two weeks to get used to, and it still bothers me if I wear it on my right wrist. It actually rubbed a small spot raw on my left wrist after about two weeks of continuous wear. FINAL THOUGHTS After four months, WHOOP claims that on average its members reduce their resting heart rate by 4.4 beats per minute, experience 60 percent fewer injuries and consume alcohol 79 percent less often before bed. Ultimately, like many things in life, success is going to be dependent on the effort put forth. For the first three weeks of wearing the WHOOP, I focused on getting into a set sleep schedule, reading an actual book before bed and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption. I even took some afternoon naps on the weekends if the app said I needed more sleep. I saw some really good results, and I felt great. Unfortunately, last week I came down with a cold and have slipped into bad habits. I’ve had too much to drink and eat, and generally have not been very active. I generally haven’t felt good as a result. As for the $30/month commitment, if the app provides the initiative to eat a little less, drink less and workout more, it’s totally worth the cost to me. Your mileage may vary. I’ve only scratched the surface of what WHOOP can do in this brief review, and there are still plenty of other features of the app I have not covered here. Overall, I am very pleased at the information I’m receiving from the strap and app, and I do plan to renew my membership once my initial six month period is over.

    2020 drivers!

Demo'd a SIM today, outdoor range on GCquad. Unfortunately hitting range balls but at least there was something to show me numbers. Swing was trash, but my bad shots weren't as bad with a SIM Max. Also, it's kinda gross that they are calling that stock "ventus" a ventus, but the shaft itself feels pretty good to me, and performed well. I'm kinda meh on OEM fittings but we don't have much options on our little rock in the ocean. Hopefully this is my last club-ho adventure before I go to Truespec in October.

  20. Yep. Even if it isn’t the best I can’t complain. But I’ll do up a review on it for sure. The Gen 1 is all over eBay and the likes. Maybe a real life review of it could help someone on the fence about it. I’m skeptical, not sure what to expect. Hopefully I don’t like it, because well... the wife might not understand the need for a milled wedge or 3.

  22. Right now, the ZJ/Furyk guys are finding it hard to win. ZJ is, on average, nearly 30 yards back of Champ. He's also, on average, driving the ball 285 yards! If he's in almost any four man scramble, he's your anchor driver. The difference between him and the "bomber" in your scramble isn't distance; it's that ZJ is hitting all those shots down the center. The only place he's short is relative to the even bigger hitters on Tour. Is the professional game broken because there's literally no place at all for a guy averaging 250 off the tee? Or 235? We recognize that there's always going to be a guy on Tour who's the shortest on Tour. There will always be a group of guys 30-35 yards behind the longest hitters. In 30 years, the "short" guys will be averaging 300.

  23. Back with the training again today. It was definitely a day of mixed feelings. The good news: after taking the entire summer off I finally matched my top green club speed again. I was also within 1mph of my best blue and red swings. And the bad news. After 507 days of training together I regret to inform everyone that my SwingSpeed Radar is no longer with us. The next swing after 144mph I tried to give it one last gargantuan effort to set an all time personal best. Unfortunately this is what happened: If I had to predict I would say that my swing that broke the radar was otherwordly. The device decided that rather than show me such a massive speed it would crack it's own screen to save me from myself and the massive ego that would follow. Thank you old friend.

  28. Good stuff! I considered picking one up last year, but was turned off by the monthly subscription. I ended up using an Oura Ring for awhile when I was tracking sleep regularly, and there’s no doubt that peppery recovery is often slept on (see what I did there?) in the scheme of things. I definitely see why so many pro athletes are using Whoop straps as having that data can really help you get the proper amount of recovery, which should help with performance. Well done on the review!!! [emoji1433][emoji1433][emoji1433]

Just got home from a fitting for the mavrik to see if last night was an anomaly.. it’s was not. Mavrik max with riptide 50 reg shaft for me was the best feel and performance I’ve had in years. Tried the speed zone in same shafts and set up and the mavrik max was a monster.. both myself and the fitter were amazed at the difference. 30. The ones mentioned here have all been great reads, including a couple of older posts I've never seen: Beat SLDR and The Distinguished Gentleman. I love Cobra Connect, Hard Rock, MPR, A Thread about Kirke, SuperSpeed, and the forum applications. A couple not mentioned so far are the Take the Wilson D7 Challenge thread and the MGS Ball Test. I loved going through the fitting process of the D7 thread with the testers. I thought it was a unique testing application thread and the participants all did an amazing job sharing the process with us. The MGS ball report, in itself, shook the golf world and even changed the ball that changed the ball. Does that equate to them actually being right about being the ball that changed the ball? Some of the responses were great! It was fun listening to reasons why bad performing balls, in the test, are better than the better ones in the tests. Why did you do this? Why not do that? As someone who doesn't have an fraction of the golf IQ as most of the members here, I thought it was a load of knowledge to soak in about the one piece of equipment I had never given much thought to. In fact I hauled every piece of steel from it to our yard not at one time mind you but in about 12 loads. I have the data plate from that water tower hanging in my shop right now. For those of you that do not know you can still Google the images and you will see the tower shaped like a golf ball on a tee. And yep I would love to hook up with any of our fine members. 35. I recently picked up a Dunlop TDPlus putter and a Dunlop True Tech chipper. I remember playing a couple Dunlop clubs back in the day and they seemed like they were budget clubs but I like these. The putter is an anser shape but has a thin topline, which I like. The chipper was kind of an impulse buy and was so cheap that I couldnt say no. I do like that it has a nice wide sold and should be almost impossible to chunk a chip with it.

  41. When you finish the round connect the SX400 to your home wifi and hit sync. This will upload your scoring and shot tracking data to SkyGolf360. To access SkyGolf360 you can download the app on your phone or go to www.skygolf.com. In the app, log in and on the home page is your most recent rounds. Click on the round and it will take you to your scorecard page. On the hole image click on edit/zoom, it expands the hole with tracked shots, then hold down your finger in the spot you missed to capture. It will pull up a grid of clubs and select the club you used, proceed to the next hole and repeat. Using your computer, go to www.skygolf.com, log in and click on my360profile at the top next to your name. Same as the app, it shows your recent rounds, click on the round to edit. Same process except you use your mouse to add shots missed. If you have time on the golf course, the same screen you learned to delete a shot, you can add one. Hold down your finger in the spot you missed to capture and add the shot.

  43. I play courses throughout western New York when I go back for visits and several have thick rough. Never once did I think when having p790s in my bag and having to hit from the rough “man I wish I had smaller soled clubs” Exactly and there are no absolutes in golf. To say one club design is better from rough is putting an absolute in something that isn’t. Some people love hitting hybrids from the rough and others don’t or can’t. Doesn’t mean a hybrid is good or bad from the rough compared to shorter grass.

  45. ... I have said over and over again, I do not understand why anyone would try and learn the most difficult game to play and make it even harder on themselves. This will probably be on my tombstone: Every golfer should play the most forgiving clubs they can effectively play. ... The only reason not to play SGI irons is your game has progressed to where the trajectory, spin and accuracy is better with a less forgiving club that allows you to hit shots that get you closer to the pin. Hitting the ball high and straight is by far the best way to learn the game and for many the best way to play the game. Properly sequencing your swing, returning the head to the ball with a repeatable face angle and hitting the ball on the same spot on the iron face is difficult for single digit players and damm near impossible for beginners and high index golfers. So positive feedback is essential for most beginners and the most forgiving clubs will give you the best chance of hitting positive shots. ... Once you become more proficient with your swing and face contact, you may find controlling your trajectory is better with a GI or even a Players Iron. You may find a lower trajectory is more conducive to hitting the ball closer to the pin and a variety of conditions. Then again, you may already have a good trajectory and the ability to move the ball to an effective degree with SGI irons. I played with a Club Champion from NJ that played the most forgiving irons Ping offered. He said he played a tree lined course with little to no wind. But playing with us in Texas, he really struggled in the constant strong winds and hard fast fairways because he did not flight his ball or hit shots with less spin. But back home in NJ he had no such problems and won his CC Mens Tournament many times with SGI ions. ... Attempting to hit much more demanding clubs because they will fine tune your focus and stop you from making reckless swings is a mental problem, not a training aid. Of course much about golf is a mental problem, so if this works for you then obviously you should do exactly that. But for the vast majority, hitting better shots with better swings is the best way to improve and you can do that with a full set of hybrids. So learn to play the game with the most forgiving irons you can play. Then IF you need to change irons to facilitate improvement in ball flight and spin, try a more demanding iron to see if it is beneficial for your game.

  46. I've played all 5 of The Legends courses, in fact that is where I usually stay as about 8 years ago we moved from Bay Tree down there. Bay Tree closed it's courses about 20 years ago. All of their offerings are good but a hint, The Legends are notorious for over booking so your round could be pretty long but with your breakfast and lunch included in the price that is not really a bad thing. Enjoy. When you are there you are only about 20 minutes from Big Stu, he and I got together a couple of years ago for lunch and golf talk, it would be worth your time if you two could hook up.
