  1. In my time at MyGolfSpy (both as a member and a moderator), I think the request I've seen most often is to compare this year's Most Wanted Driver against previous year's winners. Until now, this wasn't something a reader could do by comparing the results pages, because differing years' tests were compiled with different testers and sometimes with tweaks in methodologies. Thus, as strokes gained number from 2019 couldn't be compared straight up to the same number from 2018. UNTIL THIS YEAR! That's a big announcement and it's going to be very interesting to see the outcome.

    Clubs and Scorecards

... I know it is winter and many are antsy so lots of equipment posts from those that are not able to play. Jacked lofts and MB vs more forgiving irons always seem to be favorite winter topics. So let me present a perspective from our friend the scorecard: "Hello Friends. (I said that long before Jim Nance) I have quite a bit of information for you. Sometimes I even have pictures or art work of my 18 holes. I list any local rule that differs from the standard USGA rules. I let you know how far each hole plays from whichever tees you play and I never pass judgment on which ones you choose. I also let you know how long the entire course plays for all 18 holes. I let you know my Slope Rating which is basically a number indicating how difficult I am for a bogey golfer and I let you know my Course Rating which is basically a number indicating how difficult I am for a scratch golfer. I let you know what par is for every hole but most importantly I have a box where you can write in your score as to how many strokes you took on every single one of my 18 holes and a box at the end for the total. This is my most important function and it lets you know how you scored so you can compete with other golfers or yourself or against my course. As you can tell by my boxes, I do not believe everyone should get a trophy just for playing. Obviously I care very much what number you write in my 18 boxes or I would not provide them. And to be honest, I have absolutely no opinion of you as a person and the only thing I ask is you write an honest number in my boxes. Now this brings me to the reason I am taking to you today. Sorry to be so blunt, but I don't give a rats a$$ what club you use for any shot on any hole. I don't care if you use an iron or a driver off the tee. I don't care if you use a 5 iron with 28* or 22* of loft. I don't care if you use X Flex shafts, Senior Flex shafts or Ladies Shafts. I don't care if you hit it thin from the fairway and make a par or if you hit a perfect towering shot that lands close to the pin and lip out your birdie putt for par. I just care about how many strokes you took, not how you took them. And I really, REALLY don't care if you use a MB, Players Iron, GI, SGI. If I did, I would have boxes to check for different kinds of shafts, woods, irons, wedges or chippers. The only thing I care about is what number you write in my 18 boxes and I leave it to you to use the equipment that helps you write the lowest number. Trust me on this one too. Your friends or playing partners really don't care what clubs you play either, they only care if the number you write in my boxes add up to more than their numbers. So nobody cares what clubs you play, least of all me. Good luck and I look forward to you writing some lower numbers in my boxes!" Signed, Every score card from every course you play

  6. Well my EVNRoll one was three years ago with Mr Rife himself - from the first time that I held that putter it felt like it was made for me - it still does. There are fitters and there are fitters - I’m trusting that the ones we have here will be good. I’m predicting F3 for me - the video was cool but that’s not where my game is at - I’m fit like those guys but a 63 year old fit - big difference - if I can get a shaft that lets me hit it straight and mid 130’s ball speed around 14 degrees and 2,800 spin rate - yeah that will do nicely. :) Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  7. I'm sorry man but you're coming to the wrong group if you're looking for people to talk you out of buying golf equipment[emoji14][emoji1787] Maybe there's a "my husband/boyfriend buys way too much golf equipment" support group out there that you'll have better luck with. But seriously.. buy them if you have the chance! the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

    2020 drivers!

Fitting with the Honma rep set for Thursday. Going to see if we get the same results outside as we saw inside in Dallas a few weeks back. I’ve asked him to fit me for two shafts: one being what would be “stock”, and what would be best overall so I can see the numbers between the two to determine if extra money is worth it. May try the fairway if we have time as I’ve not hit theirs. Looking forward to it! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  9. OK, after several weeks of lessons and practice have a meaningful update... I'd mentioned in the opening post that after the initial swing evaluation I'd signed on for a pack of 10 lesson "credits", where each credit = one 1/2 hour session, and that I'd decided to use them in 1/2 hr increments and stretch them out .. ie. going back in about every week and a half to two weeks apart. In between I spent time working on the things we'd covered and also on the drills assigned, both at home and occasionally at the range. Well, the incremental process seems to be working out for me .. but let's start with a vid clip from the first lesson (Dec. 3, 2019) and a full swing with a 9i... As you can see, despite some progress last Summer, I'm reverting to a lot of old, bad habits including bent arms, getting "scoopy" with the hands but primarily hanging back on the back foot through impact. Yuck! Now.. compare that to this next clip from the most recent lesson (Feb. 13, 2020) .. here we were working on pitching different distances with different wedges (this clip is about 80-85 with a GW), so no - not directly comparable to a 9i full swing, but you can really see some better things starting to come out ... including straighter arms, maintaining better posture throughout the swing (and so, more on-plane) and especially starting to move the body into and through impact. Yea! (yeah i still have a funky little forward press thing going on...) During the course of the lessons, with a few unseasonably mild days here in NY and a long weekend trip to Florida, I've been able to get outside and play (mostly 9 holes) 7 times so far this year. I'm not saying it's all great golf but I do see a clear progression in the ratio of good, or playable, shots vs bad mistakes or compounded mistakes; also I feel like I'm starting to think less about the How am I gonna.. of the technique of the next shot and more of the What kind of shot do I want to hit to my next target. My most recent two 9-hole rounds .. two days apart on the same course, similar conditions .. could not have been more different (more here in "How'd You Play?"... https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/6351-howd-you-play/?do=findComment&comment=601411) -- the first was one of my worst rounds while the second represents a new PB! Of course I'm really happy with that but not discouraged by the first as I see that I'm still very much working on internalizing all the new, good stuff into my on-course play. So.. I'm gonna continue with the rest of the lessons, and with the drills and practicing, and plan to sign up for another lesson pack (Golftec currently has a March sale, if anyone's interested - plz see my referral link at end of first post which gives us each a $100 credit!) .. which I'll stretch out over the Spring and Summer so I can continue this process of working on and improving my skills and confidence.

  11. This is probably a very good thing for us and not so good for the OEM's. It will be interesting when a driver from 3-5 years ago beats the latest and greatest. Would results such as that deter someone from not spending ~$500 for the newest driver when a 3-year old model that now can be bought for $89 beats it? Probably not. But it sure might cause a few to pause and think about it. I certainly would.

    How'd you play?

Ended up playing a leisurely Tuesday 18 at Navy Marine from the back tees. 86 (40/46) with three doubles the last four holes. FIR: 3/14 (21%) GIR: 8/18 (44%) 37 putts (18/19) with four 3 jacks for a horrific -6.770 strokes gained putting. At this point, it's my main problem area!

    How'd you play?

Windy - 79 but reached the 2 long par 5’s in 2 to day, actually the first time I’ve ever reached #15 in 2. Crushed the drive, then absolutely keerushed the 3 wood. Missed the eagle putts on both, but easy birdies.

  15. We'll see how it goes, but RBG had way too good a deal on the Mizuno ST190 driver and fairway wood for me to not do anything. Bought the prior gen CLK hybrid too since I've never been particularly fond of my Nike. Hopefully it works out, but if not I won't be out too much (compared to current club prices). $560 for all three clubs (tax included) with free 2-day shipping. Clubs should arrive Friday and I already have a tee time for Saturday. Fingers crossed!!!

  16. This may be as revealing (and unwelcome) to the OEM's as the ball test from last year was to the ball manufacturers.

  17. I don’t have any inside information but I don’t see another driver test on the schedule an don’t believe it will be a retest with actual testers. My guess is that the data analytics team believes they can compare data across the years and make it relevant. They do not use adapters; Stock setups from the manufacturer.

    Weight Loss Thread

Time to get moving, and Lent is just the motivation I’ve needed. I lost 15 lbs after my surgery in November, but I’ve gained 20 back. The hardest part about losing any weight is being on the road EVERY day. I’m just going to have to start packing my lunch and snacks so what goes in is healthy. Time to start using the TRX system, power walking on the treadmill, and doing core exercises to help with my back disease. Here we go!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  22. It depends upon what brings you enjoyment, doesn't it? For me, shooting the lowest score possible is what brings me enjoyment, so I want to play the clubs that help me shoot the lowest scores possible. If other golfers play for other purposes, then by all means they should play the clubs that maximize their enjoyment.

  23. +1 to that! I've been gaming the Cleveland Launchers for 3 seasons and not a peep from anyone about my clubs. At least to my face anyway. Just picked them up today after pimping them out with Steelfiber shafts. It will be like playing lawn darts with these this year.

  24. ... Honestly ballplayer, I don't think it is the golf community as much as talking to yourself. I have been paired up with strangers that have admired my game or score waaaaaaaay more than anyone that admired my clubs. It has been my experience that about 95% not only don't care what I am playing, they don't even notice. When it comes to my ego, I find it more rewarding to hear "great shot!" much more than "nice sticks!" Not once in my life has anyone ever said something like "You hit your 5 iron 193yds with a beautiful high trajectory that was right at the flag, hopped and stopped right next to it for a 1 foot birdie putt! Just think how much more rewarding that would have been if you used an MB instead of your P790!" I just don't understand the desire to play any club that penalizes your ability to hit your best shots and post your lowest score. (Of course this doesn't apply to those that really don't care about score and play clubs for the sheer enjoyment of hitting them)

  26. I play an average of three times a week with a group that doesn't keep score. It's just about the fresh air and laughs. The bets are usually on individual shots, and we play in conventional order so we all see each other's shots. So, Mr. Scorecard, you can take a breather on our rounds. There are different ways and different reasons to play this game.

  27. ... While this is admittedly fun and I always love reading the results, personal playing experience should always be the determening factor. When the LTD was released, it was so technically advanced and supposed to revolutionize drivers, especially for better players. I picked one up along with a Fly Z and did quite a bit of head to head testing. When hit perfectly, the LTD was longer by a good 5-10yds but when missing the sweet spot the Fly Z was longer and much more accurate. Talking with the Engineers at Cobra, almost every single one of them played the Fly Z with an 18gm weight at a shorter than standard length and they called it their "secret weapon fairway finder". The lone exception was a recent DI college golfer that played the LTD and felt it was the best driver he had ever played. ... I really wanted to play the LTD and stuck with it longer than I should have when the results were pretty clear, before finally giving in to the Fly Z, which I still think might be the best driver ever made for the widest range of players. My son is still playing my old Fly Z and carries it 280+. I put a Tensei Blue L Flex in my other Fly Z and my wife picked up 15 yards and both of them have trusted my equipment suggestions but won't even let me have them demo another driver. So again, I imagine the results will be fun and always interesting but hitting a driver on a LM indoors bears very little resemblance to actually playing one in a round of golf. Something I learned long ago when just killing drivers on a LM after standing in one spot and grooving a swing when a bad shot had zero consequences compared to hitting it once off a tee during a round where direction and distance counts for every swing.

  30. Happy to report that with a few weekend course openings already this season, I've made some progress on this challenge even in the New England weather! I think I was very much correct about the easiest holes... I've already completed all but 1 of those pars. However, I was pleased to note that I've parred two of the hard holes as well. Seems like a real possibility I can finish this off in the next couple months, and then start the birdie challenge. I doubt I'll complete all 18 of those, but I would be thrilled to make 9.

  31. I would suggest you get in the habit of paying attention to actual versus Arccos pin positions as putt lengths play a big factor in your putting handicap. Although I like Arccos, their "AI" determination of pin position is terrible. I think I haven't needed to edit the pin placement about twice. I would actually be very OK with them adding a "pin locate" button to the app like ShotScope has on their watch.

  33. Got some clearance to do some chipping and pitch shots so I headed out with my 47 degree wedge and a 60 that I want to put in play. Not hitting a ball in about 2 months sure showed. Not sure I got but maybe 3 balls out of 15 inside a 10 foot circle from about 30 yards. Had them all over the green. After a few 15 ball rounds, I got things under control and found a touch and things improved. Got a round of physical theraphy tomorrow then another early next week so maybe just maybe I will get cleared to play.

  39. I'm in the same boat as @azstu324 in that I've gone through a lot of swing changes over the past year. That's one of the reasons I'm really excited about this review. One surprise with this review is that I was actually in a driver fitting with PXG to look at a new shaft hours before I found out I was selected for this review. I actually purchased the shaft directly after the fitting, Aldila NV Green NXT 65 X, so I'll be comparing 3 shafts in my review! Based upon our current gamers, which shaft, F1 or F3, do you guys think we'll end up with for this review?

  42. trying to find a decent set of 7-P irons for my 80 year old father-in-law. He needs a light/senior shaft. I don't want to pay much for them and am fine with some used ones. I wonder how he'd feel playing a set of ladies clubs? They've got to have similar properties I would think. Dick's has the TA1s for 200 w/Sr shafts....

WOW!! Nice! ..can we now say that Foz has a .. "distance problem"...

  44. That was my assumption as well. Just thought it may be tougher for them to gather all of the stock options for the clubs that are 4-5 years old as some of those shafts are no longer offered. I guess I'm thinking of how difficult it would be for an average person to do it; not a state of the art testing/fitting studio like MGS. No matter what this will be awesome.

  45. my hdcp dropped quite a bit when i moved out of the SGI category to the CB 712 club......also the fat soled approach wedges are horrible and i saved a ton of strokes on the course with my vokeys.... play what works, not what marketing tells you to play.....test em all and buy what works for you regardless of hdcp.

  46. When I played the other day with another member that I met on the course, he encouraged me to enter the club tournaments. He said that there are all levels of players in the tournaments, and I shouldn't feel hesitant because I am a high handicapper. I am planning to try to join some of the tournaments just for fun, it gives me more incentive to focus on improving my game. I also for the first time am signing up to get a handicap. Now I just need to play some real rounds to get some scores in.

  47. One thing I think about when it comes to fittings is sample size. Often times, when you go to a fitting, they have you hit like 5 balls with each shaft combination. In my mind, that makes sense for good golfers that put a good swing on the ball. For me, being a high handicapper, the chance of bad swings within those 5 shots is very high. When I test out the Motore X, I want to make sure the sample size is sufficiently high. I also have pondered the mental impact of knowing which shaft you are testing. For example, knowing that Motore X is designed to increase ball speed, will I unconsciously swing harder because of it? In an optimal test, it would be really cool if all shafts had no graphics on them and you didn't know which shaft was which. Just some pondering that I have been doing.
