  1. I played in league this evening. Let's just say I drank better than I played.

    How'd you play?

Played 18 today with dad at the course hosting the district qualifier next month. Lots of positives and some really good course management today. 39/37 with 3 birdies and a double. If I could gripe about one thing, my was not great. 5 over round was a big deal for me as I had never broken 80 on this course until today. I strung 3 bogeys in a row on 15-17 but finished 18 with a bird. It’s at the south end of Canandaigua Lake and the views are fantastic. One amusing shot from today...I landed the ball square on the top of the flag. The black nut that keeps the flag secured left a nice ding as a reminder.

Get DEADLY around the greens and your cap will drop for sure. One huge difference between us mid-cappers and the low ones is that they get up and down much more frequently. Missed greens are almost like a penalty stroke for us because we can't recover.

    How'd you play?

Earlier, I remarked about my round where I shot back to back 41 with 2 doubles on each side today. Well, tonight, was men's club where the format was basically a skins game. So, on my 3rd nine for the day, I had yet again 2 double bogeys, but this time shot 4 over (39 on par 35 course). Our course has 27 holes and I played all 3 nines today and had 2 double bogies on each 9. I'm beginning to think I'm going to get a new nickname if I keep this up. On the plus side, I did have 2 birdies in the skins game, one of which I stroke on for a net deuce. Don't know if I won anything or not, but maybe.....

Well, I turned up ready to play, but whoever was hitting the ball sucked. Driver was off pretty much the whole day with the exception of 2 or 3 holes. The highlight of the round was the par 3 #8, hit a 7 iron 175 yards, string straight over the flag and 2 putted for par. Ended the day with a 93. I'm blaming the mulch laying the day before.

Riverwalk Golf Club Mission/Presidio today after work! 83 (44/39) - 1 birdie, 8 pars, 6 bogeys and 3 doubles. FIR 5/14 (36%) - I had a couple bombs, but also had some crap drives. GIR 5/18 (28%) - Not my best effort on approaches so a work in progress as usual! 30 putts, SG putting -1.210 with six 1 putts and zero 3 putts. It was an up and down round, and I put together a nice 6 hole run to finish the round. On to the next round!

  8. By now, most of you are familiar with the badge system we've got here on the Forum. Most of our badges fit in four categories: forum ranks, golf accomplishments, careers, and countries. Recently, a member suggested a cancer survivor badge, which intrigued us. We decided to broaden it a bit, not limiting it to cancer survivors. We know there are forum members whose stories can't be told without recounting a serious battle for their lives, and this badge is a way to demonstrate that here. We thought that with the introduction of this badge, we'd create a thread for members to tell their stories of perseverance and victory. It's primarily a place for those who request the badge to be one of their two badges to tell their stories, but we're certainly not going to stop any member from sharing what they've overcome.

  9. I can’t wait to start this review, I’ve got a serious head start on the ptxpro’s, and seriously can’t wait for the Icons. I dearly miss my Mizzy mp5’s, especially the scoring end, which the Icons will replace. And the 4UiHi is so deeply needed. My hybrid has lost my confidence... so sad... but I will say, ....nah, I better wait... haha. maybe I can say it’s not a bad idea to buy some a Hogan stock? Is there such a thing?

  10. I've not really had any issues with using Android with Arccos other than battery drain and still have enough to play 18. I upgraded phones a while back and now that's to a minimum. My biggest complaint is Arccos not having the social aspect for Android and I've mulled the idea of buying an iPhone just for that reason. Looks like you had a good idea going that route, I hope you really enjoy it. The data is absolutely helpful and sometimes humbling. That's nice! Odyssey is one of those putters that I can just pick up in the store and just flat out roll. Now, on the course it might be a different story. Best of luck with it! Just got my Boonie hat in today, it's a little more olive than I expected, but I think it'll do the job of keeping my ears and neck from frying. Makes me feel a little like@MattF but not as fashionable. Sent from my SM-N975U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  12. Damn they look pretty don't they? Had a good round today. As I said before was an IRON only day and if the 4 Iron is any tell on how this finish wears, signs all point to YES! Hit it on every hole except the Par 3's (sometimes twice per hole). Held up great no major signs of wear. Was wet so the dirt buildup was minimal if any and wiped right off. The moisture definitely showed more today but DID NOT effect spin at all, had great bite on shots and was still able to go at flags. I think it has to do with the water does not stay in the grooves like a normal club: As you can see here the grooves have barely any water build up One thing I did notice was some marks on the 8 Iron (black stripe) not sure if its from rubbing the 7/9 iron in the bag? Not a lot of chatter and the other clubs are not doing it will keep an eye on this: Lastly distance like I said is great and everything was right online, extremely straight ball flight which is different for me. Mishits were practically 0 factor. I was in almost no trouble, granted the course is more or less open but I was not off line with mishits by much. Couple of shot traces (4 Iron has a classic response from me, I didn't swear either which is surprising...enjoy) That thing was pure and the feeling of these clubs are like nothing else, the compression feels FANTASTIC. That shot went about 210-220 with virtually no roll (wet conditions and caught the rough first). 2nd trace is a chip shot with the Utility/Gap wedge. I am liking these things around the green. The bite is great with a little roll and very easy to control. I am able to really get through the shot and have not chunked/skulled anything as of yet (jynxed myself here) More to come, great things so far!

Not great by any stretch of the imagination today. Course was playing slow with very little runout on top of a low geeky drive tendency resulted in some short drives. And a bad drive, and unlucky second left my behind a pine tree which led to a double, but I did notch my first birdie of the season and had no 3 putts once again. Plus, I made it to my computer 3 minutes before the staff conference started at 9. [emoji16]

  14. Not sure if it was the heat and humidity or recovery from the Memorial Day weekend - but yesterday's swings were lower with all of the sticks - most in the 3-4 mph range. Will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings, hopefully the numbers will be back up.

  15. No worries! If it makes you feel any better, I have personally adjusted the weight of my Superspeed sticks by taking small amounts off the heads with the occasional contact with the garage floor. I am not sure if my faster speeds over time are due to increased fast twitch muscle fibers or the decrease in weight of the sticks.

  17. I started doing the protocols during last years testing and stopped due to pain in my fingers but the 2020 thread inspired me to get started again. The big question was where to start; I was through 19 weeks so my thought was to start protocol 3 over again but I would judge based on numbers from my first session. Having done most wanted driver testing, I knew my swing speed on GC Quad was generally in the 106-108 range when making a normal shot. Took a before number and swung at 108. Started the protocol and my initial numbers were just under where I stopped last year so I think I am starting at a good place. Very quickly my fingers starting hurting like they were last year. I thought that maybe I was holding the club to tight so I loosened my grip a little which helped with the pain but will be something I continue to monitor. Did a driver speed test after the session and recorded a top speed of 117. Thanks to all the people participating in the thread to help get me motivated to get started again!

    How'd you play?

... So many ways to play this game, even at a high level. I don't wanna say I never chip twice, but I never chip twice. If I am driving the ball well and my swing feels good I am usually below par. But much more often I am not driving the ball well and my swing feels tight, so I find myself in plenty of up and down situations usually shooting in the mid 70's. My save percentage would be somewhere around 80% and even higher on some days. Last week I was 12 for 13 getting up and down, and all of them were far from easy. But that also means I hit 5 GIRs which is obviously well below my index but shot a 75. Granted it was high winds and deep rough, but a few days later shot a 70 in similar conditions when I was striking the ball well and went 4/4 up and down. ... My point being if you can really fine tune your short game, it will help you shoot below your index on good days and keep you in the game on bad days. We have all had big drives in the middle of the fairway only to squander that shot and hit a poor iron that can result in a bogie or worse. Or a laser iron to 10 feet and roll it 5 feet past missing the comeback putt. But hit a poor tee shot in the rough, get something around the green and hit a great pitch/chip to tap in range or makable putt range and you save the hole. If you have a good short game you never squander a good pitch/chip/long putt. I have always felt becoming proficient from the green and going backwards is the fastest way to lower you index and avoid big numbers one a hole. Obviously a duffed, OB or hazard bound tee shot is another story. ... I will add I learned the game with persimmon woods and MB irons using a balata ball, so the short game was much easier to master than the long game. But many younger players have learned the game with big perimeter weighted drivers and irons and a ball that doesn't curve as much so I get some became proficient with the long game before the short game. But regardless of how you learned, optimizing your short game can pay huge dividends.

  20. Hope this works! I'm not one to buy a putter without trying it first but I've heard outstanding things about this and can return up until August 1st. It was between this one and the double wide; ready for all the MOI I can get. Plus the "S" version has a little toehang for my slight arcing stroke. Odyssey Stroke Lab Black Ten S Putter Right Handed 34.25in Phil's first time out with it and he had 7 birdies.... I'll be happy with half of that.

  22. Lots of times I enjoy reviews just because I like to see what others do. You guys all amaze this old school guy with your technical skills. This test is different though. I’m looking forward to hearing how you all do with this particularly as they transition through the set. I had a great integrated combo iron set for a number of years and have longed for that same set up since I aged out of them. It’s eluded me so far - either the turf interaction differs as the model type changes or the gapping is not right or the visual between model switches is too dramatic - right now I’ve settled for that last one - the jump from a SCOR 48 which is a blade to a GI Ping G30 PW is very tough on the eyes. Looking forward to it gents - Sluggo I particularly have my eyes on you on this one. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  24. So far, I've been perhaps a little more inconsistent off the tee with more right misses than usual, but no left misses since I started the program. I'll take a one-sided miss over my usual nearly 50/50 left/right split any day. Distance is hard to assess with wet fairways and no roll, but many have been in the high end of my Arccos smart range, even without much roll. I have topped a couple tee balls, which I almost never do, so I'm tempted to think all these protocol swings intentionally trying to be around 6" off the ground may be contributing? Just a guess. Irons have been good - I feel smoother and this week in league I was a half to a full club longer than normal on quite a few shots. It may be too soon to tell for me since I tend to be inconsistent from week to week and can be very streaky, so we'll see as things progress. They finally opened the range at our league course, so I'm going early next week to spend time hitting balls and see what adjustments I can make.

Unfortunately no, this is a really fun one. It's only 368 from the back tee and that fairway sits on a table. Miss left and you're in a valley surrounded by those trees. Miss right and it's OB. I hit a 3 or 4 iron and it turns into a get your par and walk to the 11th scenario.

... Haha guilty as charged. I made that mistake with a Spyder putter when they first came out and were so hot on tour. I figured if so many that need to make putts for a living are switching to the Spyder, there must be something to it. My next 2 visits to the PGA SS I rolled about 50 putts and the Spyder was deadly, especially from 6 feet. So I bought one. First round on the course was a disaster. While putts on hard, fast and very flat carpeting at the SS were very accurate, adding slope with slower green speeds made judging distance very difficult with the Spyder. I basically had no feel with the Spyder and putted horribly, especially longer putts. This was a huge problem as putting is a strength of my game and after only 2 rounds I had zero confidence in my Spyder. I should have known better as I have always played with heavy toe hang, but after going through a spell of missing a few short putts hitting every short putt that seemed to find the center of the cup at the SS seemed like a no brainer. Never to old to learn something new.

To piggy back off @B.Boston I also made all my meetings and felt refreshing to play before work! Light drizzle here and there felt good (very humid today) nothing was rolling so off the tee was shorter. Was a good ball striking day, crap putting. Also to note I played irons only (with 2 drives just to see where I was at). Overall 40 with great fairways hit (thanks to the irons) and the GIR reflected the shortness off the tee. Lastly the course entrance I through in there. Was great to see with memorial day and the shutdown, was nice to see some American pride out there.

  31. Miramar Memorial Golf Course again with my usual crew this morning! 90 (42/48, 89 ESC) - 7 pars, 6 bogeys, 4 doubles and a triple. Holes 10-14 pretty much killed this round. FIR 5/15 (33%) - Driver wasn't too bad for the most part aside from that aforementioned stretch on the back. GIR 6/18 (33%) - I was using a friends Z785s and while the lofts are the same as my Epons, I was still feeling them out. Wedges on the other hand were atrocious. 31 putts, SG -4.020, six 1 putts and one 3 putt. I missed some short ones, including a 3 foot birdie. Overall though, I'm still feeling good about my putting!

Per DECADE last 64 rounds. 74.47 scoring average. Save 42.57% Rough Save 46.47% Sand Save 25.84% Fairway Save 46.05% 2 chips per round 1.26 Dam those are not pretty. The last one drives me insane!! Total SG Short Game -0.62, which would put me 220 on tour. So not bad with ugly percentages. But overall if I miss a green the percentages say I am making bogey.

Let it be known that the golf gods did not look kindly to me questioning another man's definition of a dumpster fire. Is there such thing as a nuclear version of a dumpster fire? Well, it happened to me in league last night.... It all started innocently enough. 3H to the fairway, AW to ~15 feet and a three putt. Then I promptly hit the next tee shot OB (by only a few feet), followed by less-than-optimal recovery through trees, a decent 3W, and a chip to the center of the green for another 3-putt. To summarize, I tripled both par 5's, had three 3-putts, and was 13 over when I stepped to the 7th tee. Fortunately, I pulled my head out of my a$$ and managed to bogey, par, par my way in for a 50 (+14). Strangely, I was hitting my irons very solid and, with only one obvious exception, exactly where I wanted them to go. Even then, I hit one of them "too well", if there is such a thing. On the 6th hole, I had a good drive with about 165 to the center of the green with a slight helping breeze. I was thinking stock 7 iron since that's my 160 club. Maybe SuperSpeed training is somewhat to blame, but I smoked that 7 iron - laser-straight, right at the center of the green, but it flew the green... and the bunker behind it. Past the bunker is a down-slope that kicked my ball away from the green and under trees. Since I could not get the ball in the air, I tried to bash an 8 iron into the bank on the back side of the bunker and hope for a good bounce, but I flew it. Another pathetic chip and a 3-putt for a triple. When I was editing my round in Arccos, I moved the 7 iron to the approximate area it landed to figure out the carry - ~ 180-185. Not what I intended. Driving = garbage Irons = better than I've hit them in a while Chipping = garbage Putting = garbage So there, that is my definition of a dumpster fire.

  50. Well I finished the first workout of week 13 yesterday after finally getting going again this spring. You can see from this table here that I am seeing a plateau in my weekly high speed swings for the past few weeks. I feel like I'm on the brink of a bump though as I've had several first swings with the green stick around 120-123 before getting going. Yesterday I even ended with two 126's in a row... whyyyyy it couldn't have read 127? I don't know! And here is the high swings from my normal side by workout. This really shows the session to session consistency I'm starting to see with the green stick, and overall positive trend of the blue and red, although red was down last session. I've certainly had down days, but I feel like I'm starting to get into good shape again and am looking forward to hitting that 130 mark at some point this season! I know it's there... just gotta swing it!
