    How'd you play?

I have GOT to play better!! I didn't think it would happen for awhile, but my wife and I tied today at 85. Her last 3 rounds have been 84, 87, and 85; the 87 was in the Wed Ladies league. She hasn't beat me since just before my total knee replacement in 2014; I was in pain. A triple and a double along with 2 3-putts (which I rarely do) on the front nine did me in. FOCUS!! We had a hawk's nest in the trees by the driving range all spring. Now we have two new young hawks on the course. Lots of food available; squirrels running all over. My wife feeds them peanuts, salted of course for seasoning!! When a ball landed in the fairway, one of these hawks dropped down from the tree to check it out. We got pretty close to it before it took off.

  2. Did anyone here order a bag full of marshmallows? Immediate thought: forged wool sweater... yeah, I’m sticking with that. Goodness gracious. And that was with range balls. Very eager to burn off some 5-layer urethane ammo.

  6. So, first round in, the sound of these blades are fantastic. They are the dullest amazing sounding irons ever! They were going close to 10 yards further then my ap2s. Nice high straight to 1 yard fades all day! Hit a6 iron from 174 into the wind, hit 3 yards past the pin and stopped on a dime. (Made the putt!) I had a tough time with the 4 iron. Hit out on the toe, the groove less part, and the feel wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but lost a lot of distance. Need to dial strike in on 4 and 5 irons. With my ap2s my max on a pitching wedge prefectly struck was 140, and would usually pull 9 iron on a140 shot. However with these I had a149 pin and flew it just past on high and pulled it back a few feet, missed that putt however. So far off the bat very pleased. More to come

    How'd you play?

In 25 years of competition golf today was a first, my opponent didn’t show. I thought the rule was he lost every hole he was not there for but apparently it has now changed to has to show by the second tee. Was an easy match with a par on 1 and a 4 iron off the second tee for the win. Get to play in the finals next Saturday. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Made 2 kids happy

Playing golf today, 2 boys had a table set up on #4 tee box behind their house. They were selling candy, soda, and golf balls. They had the balls sorted by type for the better golf balls, selling them for a buck each. I reached in my used ball pocket of my bag and handed them 8-10 Snell balls and gave them to them to sell. They thanked me then asked about Snell. I told them a bit about Dean Snell then told them to google Snell golf. I don't think they really cared about it other than it was 8-10 more balls they had the chance to sell. The balls were headed for my shag bag/box of used balls likely to never see the light of day again. Giving them to the boys to sell made more sense to me and they certainly were appreciative.

    How'd you play?

35/40:75 today. 7 fairways, 10 greens, 29 putts. Played pretty well with a few bad shots; 4 birdies really helped the score. After my practice session last week using the GW for short game shots, I put that into play today and did really well. Definitely going to be something that I continue to do.

  16. 79 (40/39) from the tips, 6990 (73.4/123). 64% of fairways, only 39% of greens. I missed four of them long due to not knowing distances with the new Honma irons. Burned the lip on three birdies, but putting didn’t feel right all day. I keep pulling everything, so I can’t wait for the EXPUTT to help me figure out what’s going on!

When I was working, I had a lawn service at my old house from 2005 to 2014. It started out at $15/week. When I retired, the cost was $40/week. I decided I had time to mow and save money. I have no idea what it would cost today, but I'm sure that it's more that $50/week, and if I were in business to cut lawns, I would charge $80/week to cut mine!!.

    How'd you play?

89 41/48 6 pars / 0 birdies 5 FIRs(5 penalties) 5 GIRs 34 putts / 11 chips I played at a local country club, Saugahatchee, that my buddy is a member of in Auburn, AL. This is where the State Am will be held in a couple weeks. Very windy day which led to not keeping my drives in the fairway. It felt like every shot was into the wind. Fell apart on the back with two triples and a double. Oh well, look forward to the next round.

  19. I have my hypothetical round planned out. (Really happening on Wednesday) The forecast is 91°, light and variable winds, but the wind always seems to be a factor at the course. If everything goes as planned I’ll shoot a 57. I am back at the BAD/Mo way of swinging again, changed up the backswing a little to get more depth, and distance. Only problem with this one plane swing is getting used to the short game. If I use my old methods I get a little closer to the heel than I would like, sometimes even a little too far... if you know what I mean. So for now, the short game will struggle, but this make for better planning for the round. Leaving myself a full PW in rather than a half gap wedge or something. I’ll have to watch some video of Moe and BAD to see what they do. I did find some success with a closed stance, and feeling like I’m hitting a pull (75 and in). Ill probably get out there and have fun, if not, oh well. Beats being in the office.

    How'd you play?

Played my home course Thursday in extreme heat, okay I live in Houston what do I expect? This is possibly the last round with a full bag of Titleist clubs as I direct my focus and devotion to #COBRACONNECT4 #MGSCOBRA2020. On to the round...Front nine pretty much sucked! But I rebounded on the back nine for a reasonable round of 86. Obviously two highlights were #10 and #17. Arccos has me 8' from the pin on 17 but a picture is worth a thousand words. 3'2" greens were extremely firm with the 100 plus heat this time of year in H-town and this 9 iron bomb left no mark but landed about two feet short and danced to a stop right here. Had fun in spite of sweating my ass off, LOL Putting FINALLY coming back to form.

    How'd you play?

First round today of the Governor’s Cup at my club which I said I wouldn’t play and got talked into. Had to give 5 pops in the Championship Flight and lost 4 of the 5 holes I had to give shots on. I squeaked our a one over 72 and won the match 2&1. The putter is starting to heat up at the right time now if I could just drive it better I would have a pretty good game right now. Onto round 2 tomorrow and playing straight up for a change. Should be a fun day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    How'd you play?

I shot a personal best at Cherry Hill in Ft Wayne. 43/46. I’ve never broke 90 there. I was 7 over the last 4 holes, so I can attest that I had one eye on the scorecard the last 4 holes. I limped home, but still proud of my score. 3 OB’s on last three holes, too. A lot of hard work finally starting to pay off. I’ve shot an 89 the last three rounds I’ve played. I have managed to limit my mistakes even with multiple OBs per round. I F’ng love this game! Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

    Balata ball

Those balata balls come with a built in 20 yards less distance off the tee, guaranteed! It's what we had to play with up until about 15 years ago so we did and we enjoyed it. We were also 15 years younger then. I loved the vintage woods - I was a Tommy Armor PGA wood guy - it was just a different game - If you could hit one 250 you were a bomber - I think the average drive on tour was under 250 with that equipment quite honestly. And yet Jack Nicklaus hit one 340 with that equipment on the PGA tournament long driving hole.

  28. I am a Seahawks season ticket holder and if they have games this year, I don't feel comfortable going to a stadium packed with people given the Covid situation. They actually gave a great offer to season ticket holders. We can get a refund for this year and still be able to purchase our normal season tickets (same seats) next year. I hope all teams are offering something similar.

Played RTJ Oxmoor Valley, Valley Course, this morning. The dew was very heavy and they had just cut earlier in the week so lots of grass clippings. My usual golf buddies were out of town, so I was paired up with a three some. Very nice guys who didn't speak much English but they were great at laughing off bad shots and celebrating the good ones. I need to learn more from them. I had 9 FIRs but only 5 GIRs. Short game was still an issue with multiple holes with multiple chips. I have to hit it close to score. Shot a 91. Didn't drive the ball very well either and I have learned it's really hard to score if I'm not driving it to the landing area. Time to hit the range and short game practice area this week!

  31. Just wanted to give a little update...yesterday I played in a golf outing that is quickly becoming my favorite outing each year. During the outing there are a few holes that are reachable with a good drive. Well let's just say that the Motore gave our group a few guaranteed birdies. For this outing it's a 2 putt limit The Motore has performed so well that my new SIM 3 wood will have the Ventus Blue w/Velocore in it. I can't wait to continue adding more Fujikura products in my line up!

  36. Yeah had a bad first round off the tee, and hit some shots to try out the clubs that I normally wouldn't hit. Shot 80 on my first 18, and 74 on my second 18, hit the irons even better my second round, and also played more typical shots the second time through, and hit better off the tee.

I'm playing in a couples Chapman format tournament next weekend in Grants Pass, OR and had our practice round today with my golfing partner. 3 hour round as it was just the two of us and it wasn't very crowded prior to our 8:45 tee time. Anyway, shot 38/39 for a 77 today. Decent ball striking. 2 birdies, one par from a lateral drop from a hazard. No doubles! Felt good to play decent again after the struggles on the course lately. Lesson paid off. First time playing with this lady. She's a 15 handicap, keeps her ball in play, albeit not very long. Chapman format should bode well for us. We'll see.

  39. I just wanted to share this, in our safe little part of the world it is rare for us to have a Police officer killed in the line of duty. In fact we have only lost 33 since 1890. The latest one was farewelled in Friday and his colleagues honoured his memory with a Haka. This is why I will never do a Haka on here, a real Haka means far to much to be just thrown around willy nilly...

So she did pretty well in advanced program. That’s the lovely Laura with her. She got to walk at the Phillies Spring training facility. 44. Stiff and regular in what shaft company? Theres nonstandard and swing speed is 1 piece of the puzzle to finding a shaft that fits a swing. Loading of the, transition and tempo all play into it. someone could fit into a 6.0 hzrdus shaft and have a smooth transition and tempo the the black would be the wrong shaft for them but the yellow 6.0 would work and if they may even drop to the 5.5 because the hzrdus tend to play a little stiffer or because to ei profile both shafts are bad fits and a stiff in Aldila rogue silver 110 better. Weight of the shaft can have an effect as well. Ball flight numbers between shafts help tell the story of what’s working, what’s not and what direction one might go

  47. [Ping G710 irons – Official MGS Forum Review by JonMUSC08 Intro Im an engineer by trade, married, and have an amazing 10-month-old little girl. I prefer to go by-the-numbers. Data is king. I tend to gravitate towards Taylormade products given my relative success with them in the past, but since joining MGS in the past few years, I’ve opened my bag to trying new products in order to improve my performance. …Oh, and I am taking more golf lessons so I place less blame on the clubs. “So you’re telling me its NOT the clubs fault when I skull it 30yds OB… Get to know Me: ● Occupation: Project Manager ● Specs: 5’10” 160lbs ● Rds/yr: 12-15 ● Charleston, SC ● Been playing since I was 14 (I just turned 34) ● Self-taught lefty. Kinda wish I was not a lefty bc finding and trying clubs bites… My Current Golf Game: ● 12.8 index ● Mid-tempo ● Current irons - Custom fit Taylormade Rocketbladz Tour KBS Stiff shafts (2013) - 7-iron 155yds ● Mid ball flight ● Miss: fade ● Strength: - Driving 55-60%+ FIR - Putting: <2 hole Claims – So What you’re saying is….. Ø Faster Maraging Steel Face One of the strongest aerospace-grade alloys in the world, maraging steel provides strength and flexibility for launching shots higher and farther. High durability coupled with a machined variable-thickness face make an ideal pairing for distance. AKA We aren’t using the cheap stuff. The face is thin in some areas and thick in others to improve forgiveness, because we know hitting the center of the club face isn’t your ideal shot. Ø 5% Higher MOI High-density tungsten toe and heel weights optimally positioned in the 17-4 stainless body increase the MOI by 5% compared to the G700, producing exceptional forgiveness for more distance and accuracy, especially for mid-to-high handicaps and slower swing speeds. AKA We drop it like its hot. “From the window to the wall…” Put the weight lower in the club to help get the ball higher into the air. Even Grandpa can throw darts at the green with ease. Ø Stealth, Hydropearl Finish A hydropearl chrome finish with black PVD coating provides hydrophobicity to repel water and improve performance through the turf and in wet conditions. The stealth finish also creates the perception of a smaller, more compact head. AKA They aren’t chrome or dull silver, they are black. Like wearing black clothing, they look smaller in size. We added RainX to whisk water off the face easier. …If you like playing in the rain. My $0.02 Having done a bit of research on the G710’s beforehand, they are classified by Golf Digest as Game Improvement (GI) irons. But so are the G410’s. My opinion, they are more Super Game Improvement (SGI). With my current swing, I’ve always tried to hit straight shots. (Now going through some swing lessons, its better and easier to control, to have a designated shot shape; fade/draw). Going into the testing, I want to see how much easier it is to consistently hit straight shops. Additionally, with swing changes, can I shape the shot if needed. How will the more aggressive lofting provide more distance as well as affect the trajectory. Will the black stealth PVD finish hold up to normal playing conditions? Like many of us, we do not own or have regular access to a launch monitor, so it is difficult to get actual data. Much of my grading is based on perception. With that, it’s very important to play a few rounds of golf to increase my sample size. I am not looking to take any extreme measures when testing considering most of us will only see normal wear and tear. Here is what I’m looking for Will normal wear & tear of the black PVD finish eventually make it a 2-tone club? (visual) Ø What are the distances gains from my past gamer? (data) Ø Do I hit the ball more consistent? (perception) o Increase Greens In Regulation (data) o Is it easier to hit 4-iron through SW? (perception) Ø How is the trajectory? o What is the stopping power on greens? (perception) Grading **Trying to be very keen on grading these for their category. I do not want to compare SGI irons to blades, players iros, etc. These are generally intended for higher hdcp players** Looks (8 out of 10 points) ● They are quite large. Larger than any iron I’ve played in the past. BUT the black finish helps reduce how large they look. The sole is thick/wide. The topline is thicker than I’d prefer. On some clubs you can see a little bit of the sole at address. ● I do love the lack of graphics or colors or logo’s; very minimalistic ● The perception of the club does not fully match its shape and size; in a good way. With that, I felt more confident standing over the ball. Confidence from the looks alone its Goal #1. ● Typically, many other SGI’s (Super Game Improvement) irons are a bit flashier and have more graphics since there is more ‘real estate’ to work on. These do not and I prefer that. ● The gray face on the black PVD finish frames the ball very well. On smaller clubs, sometimes the face can get lost in the overall club head. The white line across the bottom grove provides a slight alignment aide when trying to square up to your target. ● I did receive a bunch of comments; “Oh those look awesome!” * points deducted for minor wear decolorizations and for being a little ‘chunky.’ Sound & Feel (7 out of 10 points) ● I don’t think there was ever a shot that didn’t sound the same. I agree with the notion of a wooden bat sound; like a crack. Listen to baseball players hit a homerun, that’s the sound. My golf instructor used the word ‘clicky’ when he heard them. ● Being a cast iron, the G710’s are fairly soft. They are not buttery smooth, but I’ve certainly felt forged irons with a more harsh feeling. ● Very consistent sound and feel between great hits and mishits. No stingers, NOT A SINGLE ONE. ● I feel confident on the looks over the ball and now I also feel confident when I make the shot; great audible and physical assurance. * 2 points deducted for the wooden bat/ clicky sound. I like the sound but don’t like the sound. Point deduction for feel. Although they are cast, its not the same feel as a nice forged iron. Playability / Data (16 out of 20 points) These are SGI’s and not GI’s, players irons, or blades. Their intended use is to help the 15-20 hdcp hit the ball higher in the air, prevent mis-hits, and keep the ball straighter. There were multiple times I spun the ball backwards on the green unintentionally. The stopping power due to the trajectory was very good. Could be challenging in high wind areas. Can be very straight on good hits but the workability is not ideal with the G710’s. I have a harder time turning over a draw with these than my GI irons. Characteristics ● Accuracy – Dispersion seems tight. Larger head reduces mishits. ● Distance – Raw distance is amazing. Gained 10-15yds due to more aggressive lofting. ● Trajectory – High trajectory with more aggressive lofting is my new drug. Hitting a 7-iron 170yds consistently! ● Forgiveness – Great forgiveness. Large clubhead. Easy to sweep through the ball. ● Control – The larger sole allows me to easily sweep through the ball. The SW might be my new favorite club for >100ys; easily slides under the ball for chip shots or anything under 100yds. ● Workability – I struggled trying to intentionally draw and fade them most times. On-Course / LM Performance (25 out of 30 points) I typically shoot 88-90 with my Taylormade Rocketbladz Tour clubs… My first round with the G710’s I shot an 84. Follow-up with a 85, 88, 89. I could have broken 80 during that 84 round if my driving was better! The added distance compared to my TM gamers was awesome; extra 10-15yds greatly improves confidence shooting into greens. Hitting a 4-iron 210 yds knocks the 3 & 4 hybrids out of the bag. The visual, audible, and physical feels of the club provided great confidence. I did not like the SW from firmer greenside bunkers but loved using it from inside 100 yards. Having gone through a recent iron fitting with Golftec this week, the statistics were pretty good with the G710’s (though a different club/brand fit me better). **Lets not talk about how awful that aim was in the last video.... I know, I know.... ** I have a hard time getting past the larger clubhead and bit thicker topline. BUT if I do not have the ability/skills to hit something smaller than I NEED to be playing these clubs for sure. Miscellaneous (10 out of 10 points) Ping was amazing to work with. They brought out the big guns to help us during the fitting process. They were also very quick to ship the irons to my door. Ping wrapped each clubhead in a cover to prevent any dings during shipment. Though I do not recommend a web fitting unless you are very keen on a lot of your data, launch angles, feel for shafts, trajectories, etc. This was a Covid issue, not a Ping issue. I had the Arccos grips installed and I love having that data available to me after each round. It provides a great sense to where I struggled. I would definitely consider Ping in future purchases based on their customer service. Play it or Trade it? (15 out of 20 points) Dang this is tough… For now, I am PLAYING IT. After my most recent iron fitting I SHOULD be playing something different, but for now, my scores are lower with the G710’s so they are staying in the bag! The asking price seems a bit steep for these. You can look into some older clubs or other SGI irons from major competitors for $200-$300 less (point deductions). The G710’s are chunkier than I prefer to look at. Conclusion Overall these are great SGI irons for higher handicap players. They feel great, they go far, have a cool black finish, and are quite forgiving. The arrow certainly helps the Indian in this case. > High trajectory > Forgiving > Moisture wicking > Long distance > Great feel Final Comments: > Overall, I hit the ball further and it helps. > I scored lower than my average > Great clubs but quite expensive for what they are. > The sound does need to change. Once you start listening for it, you can’t unhear it. > Great clubs for the 15-20 hdcp range Final Score (81 out of 100 points)
