    How'd you play?

Day 1 of our Saturday Blitz Two Day semiannual tourney. Weather was Sunny and 70* at Shotgun start. We had 31 players ready to go. I shot a 43/39:82 with 2 Birdies. That put in tied for 5th with +2 on my quota of 25 points. Played all 18 holes with one ball, Wilson Staff Professional. The Leader was +7, so I have a chance of a good finish this year. First Birdie of the day, Hole #7, set up with my new Cleveland Zipcore 58* from 45 yards, after a 225 yd drive! How'd you play?

On Friday I drove by the course on the way to get my hairs cut and saw the crew rolling the green on #15. OK, I thought the greens were about up to our normal pre-aerating speed, so I wondered why they were speeding them up. Found out today as my wife and I got to the course for our 8:18 tee time; Men's Club Championship (I don't play in it, never have.) After warming up on the range I looked over at the putting green... flags!!! We haven't had flags on the putting or pitching greens since March. No holes; just flags with bumpers stuck in the green. I like those anyway. DANG!! The greens are FAST. They were in perfect shape after the aerating healed, but now they're snot fast. So how did I do?? One birdie and one bogey for an even PAR 37 on the front nine!! I like these greens!! Still can't get off the tee, but I was a chipping and putting fool today... well, for half a day anyway. At the turn I said to myself, "Self, all you have to do is hit some decent drives on the easier back nine and today will be the day you shoot your age." Note to Self: Don't ever say s**t like that. Back nine scores: Double, bogey, bogey, par, Double, par, par, par, Double for an 8 over 43. "I am such an idiot."

  6. MGS, in my opinion, does a great job of choosing their testers. When testers are announced, my usual comment is about looking forward to their reviews because the names listed are ones I recognize because of their great posts. They provide thoughtful comments and threads about golf in general, so I know they'll do the same with their review. Like others noted, a review opportunity isn't a contest win; it's a chance to provide solid, helpful feedback to the MGS readers, as well as the OEM. If you head back through the testing area of the forum, unfortunately you'll see some threads where some posts are just "Stage 2 Placeholder" or "Stage 3 Placeholder" because the person chosen grabbed the gear and split. That's never a good look. Thankfully I don't think that's happened in the past few years, but it reinforces the mods points about making sure testing feedback will be received. A final note - I've been very lucky enough to have been picked in two testing opportunities here. I only toss my name into the hat for products that I have an active interest in AND will work for me. I'll never request to test a hybrid or a set of blades, because what good would my feedback do? I'm not the golfer that those clubs are geared for. Nor will I be applying from now until at least March due to my location. If a spy is genuinely interested in doing a product review or test, my own personal feeling on it is that you should make a point to only apply for what you would actually be able to provide solid feedback on. Big thanks to MGS and the mods here for so many very cool opportunities for us readers. EDIT: One other thing that I personally feel may be important to being chosen for a test - showing that you'll provide honest feedback. I've read reviews on other forums where every tester thought that the club(s) was the most amazing thing they've ever hit. Like... every single tester said the same thing. In a real-world situation, that's not going to happen. Here, there have been plenty of testers that had no problem pointing out their concerns about looks, performance, feel, etc. THAT is what OEMs and readers want to see, not fawning over the club or the company. Like I said - just my own thoughts on that.

On the hair thing my old man hated long hair with a passion. I always had a crew cut growing up cut every 2 weeks . Now for a couple of years I ended up in a private Baptist school and man were they strict on hair. I shaved mine half the time to keep from hearing the static. I got out of there I had gotten older and let it grow some then wham I went in the NAVY. After I got out I let it grow for 10 years. Cut it back some. When I came here I had a pony tail I did cut it back some when I was in the towing business because of dealing with 3 Police Agencies. The company I was driving a truck for was not strict but you would get little comments. Since I have been home hurt I have grown it back out again. I do not think I am going back to work ( my choice) so I am letting it grow out really long again. My last stand on people telling me what to do

I know I'm not good enough to give advice on how to fix a swing or play any part of this game, so I'm very hesitant to add to this conversation. But . . . when I'm so frustrated with my play that I want to cry, I go to the range, and after lining up to hit each ball, I close my eyes. It helps calm me to swing only by feel. I've never hit the ground and have only whiffed one with closed eyes. I regularly hit a blind shot during a round and have hit some awesome drives with my eyes closed, but need to be with cooperative playing partners willing to watch where my ball goes. It's always surprising how straight my blind shot are.

..., I feel your pain/joy. I have played well over 1,000 rounds at the local muni a few miles from my home. A really nice muni but on any given day the greens can be covered in ball marks and they are almost always a medium speed and occasionally on the slow side but never fast. There is plenty of slope and some tiering but mid speed means they are not too difficult to putt unless they get too creative with pin placements. But like you, I played the afternoon after the morning Mens Championship and the greens were sooooooo fast. I have never played there with the greens rolling as fast as they were for the Championship. Caused me several problems because although the pins were fair, some were right on the border of unfair as fast as they were rolling. And after 1,000 round it was just difficult to re-wire my brain to accommodate the speed. But we are in the same boat as I would LOVE to get used to that speed because they have never rolled truer.

  13. Went out this morning to get a round in before my flight tomorrow. Playing in a charity outing on Tuesday in Kansas City. Then another round with customers on Wednesday and a few hours booked Thursday at Top Golf with customers. (I know tough job I have) Today's round was interesting to say the least. I hit all fairways but one. Really did hit it but it was sloped so it just rolled into the right rough. Iron shots had me laugh a few times. I had three layers of clothes on so I guess I was just not bending over enough. I thinned 4 iron shots. Killed a few worms on the way to the green. That's what made me laugh. Even when I thinned it it still found the green. So my greens in regulation was ok, but it wasn't pretty achieving it. 13 of 18 I only had one bad hole with a double. I landed in a green side bunker and it was like concrete. The club bounced off the sand and I skulled the shot out and over the green. Then chunked a chip, but still rolled on then a two putt. Overall not a bad day, 38 on the front and 36 on the back. Two birdies. Clubs are cleaned and packed. Ready to roll....

  15. I think the the toe being up is a flaw in my setup. I have a tendency to really allow my hands to drop low and to bring the club on a strong arc inside. Setting up with the DF flat really gets my hands in a better spot and my stroke gets a lot more SBST. Matt from L.A.B. mentioned he sees the hands drop a lot in the in person fittings. Because the fitting putter has the moveable lie angle, he said people just get their hands really low when there is no resistance to doing so. I was very impressed on the putting green today, and it kills me that I will likely be waiting months before I can really give it a proper test on course.

  16. I'm with you on this. It has to be something I am interested in and truly want to test. After testing the Sub-70 699 Pro irons you realize how much work you have to put into the test. But I will say it really gets you motivated and focused. I really enjoyed it and hope to test again someday. If by chance I test again and the item just didn't work for me I would offer it back into the community for someone else to try out.

My old man was left handed . Said the old folks always stated a left handed person "owed the devil a days work" never figured that one out. My old man played golf right handed though because when he started ( born in 1913) there was hardly any left handed stuff. And I guess you know the difference between a left and right handed automatic and pump shotgun. My old man was an avid bird hunter and after he got past the double barrel stage did get a right hand eject and taught himself to shoot it. Later on after he made some money he did buy him a left hand eject. He was equally good with either one. He also was one hell of a pool player and could play equally well from either side of the ball there. He never tried to swing lefty in golf though said he had no desire too.

  21. When I was selected to test out the new Wilson D7's last year, I was in the 100's range for posts, had only been a member for maybe 8months, and had never tested anything of real substance until then. Since then I only enter my name for something I truly want to test, am passionate about, and know I will be committed to writing a full review of. Sure I'm as bummed as the next guy when I don't get selected, but I'm not in it for free clubs (but seriously, it is a nice perk!). I'm in it to evaluate a tool and convey my unique experience to the community and answer questions. Don't lose heart, don't feel like you shouldn't post because no one will read it, don't take the tact of only posting "when you have something to say" because your advice or unique angle on ANY subject may be just what someone needs to hear at that time. Also, take it upon yourself to test something out and let the rest of the community know about it! There are only a few "official testing" opportunities and way too many gear options out there, so let us know your experience!

Today the weather was beautiful at 64° at 730 am and got to 74° by 930 when we finished. Sunny and calm out here in Southern California, I played a local executive 9 hole, par 29 course. I haven't been practicing near as much as I was due to lack of funds. I hit one or two buckets in the last 30 days and, this was only the second round in the last 45 days. I wasn't sure what was going to happen as I got up to the tee and didn't warm up or even take a practice swing. I was gaming my 'old dudes' Sunday bag of vintage gear - Ping Eye2 Driver-3W-7W, TM Firesole 6i & 9i, Tour Action III SW, Doug Sanders Chipper, and a Bull's-eye Putter, 8 clubs in all. I grabbed my 9i for the first hole playing about 95 yds, launched it over the back by at least 10 yds, chipped in the green with my SW and into the hole for BIRDIE - to my surprise. 2nd hole playing about 155 - 6i just short, putt chip, and 2 putts more for bogey. 3rd hole playing about 310 yards - Ping Eye 2 Driver with a steel shaft crushed, SW from 70 yards, 2 putt par. 4th playing about 120 - 9i off the right, SW, 2 Putts for Bogey 5th playing any 315 yards - Driver to the right side of fairway, 9i opened a bit 3/4 swing for a butter cut from 105 to pin high, 2 putt par. 6th playing about 175ish - Ping Eye 2 7w - first OB, hitting 3 from the tee to 20 yards short, opened SW slightly to float it on the green, 2 putt double bogey. 7th playing 130ish tried to be cute and draw around a tree but pull hooked it left, SW on the green, 2 putt bogey 8th - Doug Sanders Radar Chipper from the tee playing about 140yds downhill just off the back of the green, SW on, 2 putt bogey 9th playing about 126 - 9i plugged in the green about 7 ft from the hole, 1 putt BIRDIE. Overall, at a 14.7 HDCP my course handicap was 5 and I played right on it with a 34. I was very happy to be out playing. I rarely get birdies so, two in one round was fantastic. Also, with lack of practice, it was amazing to be able to pull off any shot with reliable distance. Two shots with this old copper Ping EYE2 clone sand wedge was really cool - the hole out for BIRDIE on 1 & the chip on 6. The two drives were also really fun with the old Ping Eye2 driver - the first one was about 240 yards right down the middle. Lastly, the two TM Firesole irons with Bubble shafts are also +1" which was really fun to play with compared to my normal gamers which are steel shafted Ping G2 irons. Picture shows the woods, SW, and chipper I used. The putter and TM irons are not pictured

  25. Not a good week for me with the putter. Got a good stroke going when out on Monday course was busy so only played 12 holes. I noticed I was gripping down to the end of the grip so I shorten it from 35.5 to 34.5 for Tuesday's round and it didn't work the round was a disaster, 3 putting can't hole a putt outside 2 feet. With the end of season so close with a target still to be met decided to go back to my gamer until our last medal on the 24th. Had a bounce game on Thursday with my gamer and my setup was out and again 37 putts. Worked on my setup Friday and before I went out today and back on track for the medal, although 35 putts I had a lot of long good 2 putts.

  26. Welcome to the 2020 Classic Bag Challenge! Do you have an old set of clubs in storage you've wanted to take out play? Here's your chance. You'll be competing for the top prize of a dozen personalized Bridgestone Tour B RX Golf balls and the title of Classic Bag Champion. It was suggested by @HardcoreLooper we do a trial run for this challenge and I'll be doing another in the spring that will include our friends who live in cooler climates and can't participate this year. The rules: Your classic bag must consist of wooden or laminate wood, no metal allowed. Your irons must be blades manufactured before 1995. Set wedges and specialty wedges are allowed, but follow the same guidelines as the irons. Let's see some of those bump and run shots! Putters were the tough ones to figure out and I didn't want to exclude anyone that doesn't have a classic so there will be a half stroke penalty overall of you use a newer putter. I'll be using the same scoring system that @JohnSmalls used in the Hard Rock Challenge which takes into account course rating, slope, and handicap. Gross score - ((slope/113)x(handicap/2))+(72-course rating) The Classic Bag Challenge starts November 1 and will run until December 20. So dust off those old clubs and play as many nine hole rounds as you would like. If you play 18, just split the score up and submit your best one along with your handicap, course rating, and slope. Also, we'd love to see photos of the clubs you're playing! Leaderboard (11/9/20) @ @NRJyzr 34.0 @deejaid 37.32301 @HardcoreLooper 43.62 @sirchunksalot 56.384

  29. I just pulled off an 88 . It was 47* and windy. I played well... until I was on the green. Bogey and double most of the round, with a few pars thrown in. The greens were faster than I've ever played on my home course in 25 years. I just couldn't get the feel for them. A missed putt would go 10-15 feet passed the hole. It was a great day other than the score!

Well, my wife and I headed to the course this morning to play with one of our lady friends, same time as yesterday. Nice out; 58º cloudy, not much wind. The three of us headed to the tee; a breeze started blowing. They both asked if I was going to play the Forward tees with them... never played there before. Why not! Work on my short game. The breeze quickly became a howling, gusty wind 20-30 mph; remember the lightning fast greens I mentioned that I liked yesterday?? Putting was a lot different today; the ball actually moved on a couple of greens. Shot 85 with 3 doubles. Played from spots on the course I have never seen, and was in bunkers that I could never reach unless I duffed my previous shot! Not a good score for sure, but I could tell that playing from there was definitely easier. I took too many shots with driver that I didn't need to take. Without the wind and playing for position I feel like I could go pretty low if my short game is on. However, I'm not ready to even move up to the senior tees. Not fair playing with my wife.

Didn't play the best today, was raining pretty hard and was wet out. Didn't keep score on all holes, wasn't planning to submit scores for handicap anyway. Found my driver swing again, but too bad it was at the range after my round lol. But what I rediscovered was a setup change, so luckily that isn't something too hard to reimplement. I think my driver swing is in decent shape for Titleist Thursday in a few days.

I got to play Indian Valley CC yesterday with a friend whose son is getting married there & part of the wedding package is some tee times. It is a very nice course, played long for me as the young punks shamed me to the back tees at 6900 yards. I hit the ball pretty well, lost more than a few shots being unfamiliar with the layout and ended up at 85. I also lost a couple balls that had us frustrated because they were just off the fairway in leaves. I used the Snell MTB-X again and really like the way it plays. Got up & down out of two bunkers, which actually had nice sand in them, lipping out on one of them. All in all a great day of fun golf with good friends.

  39. High noon showdown today. It could get interesting, hopefully I worked out the steep transition. Golf is such a fickle game, 3 weeks ago I was playing lights out, last week I wanted to give up the game again. This always brings my confidence level down a little, which leads me to play bad again. Trying something new today with the warm up, going to add in a reminder aid on the range to cure the steep shots (if they are still there) It feels like my left knee is moving further off the ball than usual. Something I struggled with using the normal golf swing. 70 or 100 it will be a good day.

Everything that's been going on the past few weeks with my daughter and being up in Boston at Childrens and seeing some of the kids and their families has really put things in perspective for me. I watch my daughter trying to get around the house and do things on her own (even though my wife and I need to do a lot for her while she recovers, she's a very strong and independent minded 19yo), and I think about some of the kids we've seen and what they're trying to work their way through, and it's really just made me take a step back and reassess a lot of things that we've taken for granted. It's been a very humbling time.

  43. The Fetch was turned loose yesterday for another round while I was at Indian Valley CC. Once again I was very happy with getting the ball on the line I had chosen. The two other variables, reading the green and getting the speed correct took about 6 holes to get dialed in. I was missing on the high side as they were faster than the practice green and I was reading too much break. From the 6th hole on I had five 1 putts, three were 4' or under from two bunker shots & a good chip and two were about 15' . Only 1 three putt but that was a 70'er and I was on the upper tier putting downhill to a pin position on the front & rolled that guy off the false front of the green! I used it a few times off the fringe to see how the hole played. I thought it may catch some grass blades on the edge of the hole but it didn't have any effect on the stroke. All in all the Fetch is keeping its Gamer status!

  44. Basic club repair type things and since I am guessing you are considering them as a "classic" set of clubs to have fun with. I would cut down the wedge, extend the 5i, and then put on some inexpensive new grips. You can try sandpaper, but it they are dry rotted that probably won't make a lot of difference. Hireko has grips in the $2.00 range.
