    How'd you play?

Shot 51/49 for a surprising 100 today. I honestly didn't think I was that high, I was thinking low 90's late in the round but there ya go. It was 42 degrees when we teed off with some gusts that lasted throughout the round. I know I dropped a few shots here and there due to missing greens then needing to chip up due to the wind or not taking enough club in the cold, but thankfully I only took two penalties off the tee today with the Bertha Mini - one was to the right in the thick of some trees where I literally had no shot at all, and the other was a pull into a marsh where if I was a few feet to the right, I would have been fine. I did have 6 3-putts, so yeah... now the 100 is making more sense. Still though - I played golf here in MA and it's practically December, AND I found more balls than I lost. And living where I do, they're pretty much all ProV1s. So wins all around LOL

  4. Ok I am somewhat in ---- I played 2 nine hole rounds one Monday and one yesterday all vintage with my 62 FCs and an assortment of woods. And BTW John I did not cheat and use Rusty either I used another one of my Ironmaster putters. I am trying to get my feel back again. Used a combination of the Old Maxfli Elite wound 90 and some NOS PGA brand balata. And I am sticking to my 5 handicap I had before injury no concessions. I played from the green super senior tees. Glad I got 2 rounds in with heavy steel shafts and persimmons with minimum stiffness and pain so here goes. BTW played the back side first on Monday 43 40--- Rating 66.7 Slope 109 Yardage 5120 Par 72---- You brains can figure this if you will--- As long as my back and weather holds up I am planning at least 3 vintage rounds a week. I am done with the Scrambles for now got me swinging too hard and fast. But so far so good. As I get more strength and form I plan on going back to my regular senior tees

    How'd you play?

Shot a 79 today... miracles do happen. I committed to playing a fade off the tee all day, I had some crap drives into the wind that only traveled 230~ yards, and some down wind shots in the 270+ range. One hole i hit a 3 wood to compare to the driver. 263 3 wood, and like 266 driver. I really need to figure out what the heck is happening there. I only had one double cross drive, it was pretty bad, but I ended up saving par somehow from a long ways back. short game let me down all day, the grass is funky right now and it’s pretty mushy out there, so I’ll blame some of it on that. Great day out there though, and I even picked up a new winter hat, last one on the counter in the pro shop... was a bit chilly out there.

  13. The thing that drives me nutz worse than the 'safe club snapper' is hitting the safe yardage club to keep from going into a hazard and I flush it & the Hand of God comes down and carries the ball 25 yards farther than I normally hit it or it bounces forever....right into the water.

This is not uncommon for me. Not all the time but there are holes or times that due to the landing angle my 3w will go almost as far as my driver. My driver is almost all carry but 3w has the added benefit of roll. Not sure if that's the case with you but I wouldn't focus a lot on it.

  20. Send a few shafts to MyGolfSpy HQ to let their testers see how your claims match up with reality. Send a 1X shaft to TXG and let Matty rip on it while Ian gives us his thoughts on the tech specs. If it performs according to those guys, people here (and beyond) will be more willing to trust the results and give the product a go. You can always contact the mods of this forum and set up member testing as well. Read through some of the recent shaft tests done here, I think you’ll find the dedication to detail quite impressive. Those are the things the MGS community relies on, as opposed to data that comes from “golf laboratories” and doesn’t cite any form of EI profile to help us understand bend characteristics or anything about how the shaft really performs.

  21. I'm thankful for this range, despite the quality of balls. Nice Fiberbuilt mats, and the heat is good enough to be outside swinging as long as it's above 10-15 degrees. And his price for a large bucket is less than almost everywhere else even with heat ($12). I understand why the balls are bad, since they sit under the snow for a long time. My only other option for a heated range would cost something like $60 for the same amount of balls.

Day 2 into renovating my kid’s playroom and converting the loft area into a home office/tv room. Sometimes being the son of a contractor comes in handy being able to do all the work myself. So far all the carpentry in the office area is done, put new lights in my attic and almost done with paint. Unfortunately I still have to lay a new floor in the playroom on Friday. 25. So as promised yesterday, here is my first impressions full write up. Let's start with the unboxing first impressions. Man, oh man am I a sucker for a good headcover or what and Ben Hogan did not disappoint on this one. The classic white and blue primary colors with red accents. The Ben Hogan logo just pops on top to finish it off. Having the headweight sticker still on the plastic wrap was also a nice touch. The grip is going for a similar look to Golf Pride's MCC but is all one material and feels like it's made of cheap material, but more on the grip later. Now on to the first range session. After going through my typical warm up I dove into a full testing session of the hybrid. I started with 10 balls just to get a feel of the club (which came with a couple shanks) then went into a head to head test in comparison to my Taylormade M6 21 degree hybrid. 5 balls with each to start with my 85-90% swing focusing on finding the center of the face. Instantly, I noticed how much more penetrating of a ball flight the Hogan had. Obviously this is partly due to the stronger lofted VKRT+, but even when I tried to keep my hybrid lower the ball flight was probably launching 5-10 degrees higher than the VKTR+. Besides the more penetrating ball flight, I noticed I was getting about 15-20 yards further carry with the VKTR+. Carry average at 215 compared to 195 with my M6. Things that I love about the VKTR+: The look at address is great. Minimal offset and high face looks inviting and comfortable to hit The head shape feels like a true hybrid between and iron and wood unlike the Taylormade M6 rescue which feels like wood condensed down Ball flight is awesome to watch and is easily repeatable A few quick hitters on room for improvement on the Hybrid at first opening The Ben Hogan branded grip while a good look is obviously made of cheaper material and needs replacement immediately upon getting the club. Whether you're a cord fan or a MCC fan or even a Wynn Grip fan (gross), they're all much better options than the standard grip. The paint on the bottom of the VKTR+ seems to be wearing off rather quickly compared to my M6 which has 20+ rounds on it I was able to play my first round yesterday and while I only used the VKTR+ once, it was a 228 yard missile down the middle. Looking forward to a round on Friday to test further.

Yeah, I hit a 3 iron off the tee today further than a driver... I’ve never liked drivers, actually never liked a 3 wood either, but this thing is my go to. 3 wood was going further than the driver before I messed around with the weights, I didn’t even use the dang thing at the beginning of the season. No point. Been hooking my 2 Hybrid off the planet, so it is in time out. And getting a letting more right to left out of the t100s than I’d like to see on a stock shot. I’ve tried a few little things to reduce it, but I don’t think I can hold the face off any longer without hoseling them...

If it is always that way then yes I would question it, if it is rare then you should be ok. I play a public course most Sunday's. 10th hole is a 400ish yard par 4 with a landing area that is slightly downhill (maybe 5 feet total downhill). There is a bunker at 295. Driver goes in it, so I drop to 3w, which ends up rolling to about 5 yards of it, and I have hit it in it, so I drop back to driving iron and it still gets within 10 yards of it. Haven't hit the driving iron in it yet, but on paper there is 60 yards or more between DI and driver but in reality there are instances where that gap shrinks immensely.

We've had a pretty bad week rain wise so the course has struggled to get us on 18 holes. Last couple of rounds we play 11 holes then restart and play another 7. They have also requested us to walk and carry if possible to protect the course. So it is 4 layers of clothes on top, snood, beanie hat, golf mitts, waterproof trousers and golf boots with stinger cleats but I'm still out playing. Chipping is particularly difficult at the moment you just can't predict how the ball will react on the 1st bounce, sometimes it rolls out others it just digs in and rolls 6 inches. Saturday only lasted 14 holes, 15mph wind and a squall came in and just soaked us. Still managed a decent score in trying conditions of 6 over Today 5 over for 18 without really making a putt, had my Mavrik Driver back with the lengthen shaft and this seems to be doing the trick, striking the ball really well. 17th is a 275 yd par 4, down wind I can just about make it, putting for eagle twice on it today (missed them both). Going to try and play the next 3 days forecast is cold but dry so hopefully get a decent score or 2.

We had to have our 15 year old lab put down about 8 years ago and we finally decided it was time for a new pet. My wife was leaning towards a cat. We went to a rescue shelter last night and found this boy.... He's about 1.5 years old and lost his front paws when he was staying warm in an engine compartment and someone started the engine. He's a snuggly sweetheart and purrs so loud it sounds like a pigeon. His name is Bennett. I decided his full name needed to be Bennett Stumpington.

  33. Will be headed to the simulator for an hour on lunch today. Going to take my oldest son with me so just using it as a range and some fun with him. I would just got to an outdoor range but if I play one more hour at the sim facility I'll get a free "membership" for the winter so I'll save $10 an hour all winter. The place is the least expensive around to begin with so the plan is to go 2 or 3 times a month over the winter. It will be good today anyway to just hit some balls since I'll be playing on Black Friday and it's been a little while since I've played.

  34. As gbtrsc said, based on the club length the frequency for an R ought to be more like 275. However, I should add that this was tested with the grip ON. I haven't tested with this grip model before, so it's quite possible that there's a lot of damping going on. I don't want to pull the grip until after I've used the club a bit, but I will go back and test with the grip off sometime soon. I should have realized that before my original post, but it's been a while since I used the frequency analyzer. My brain is rusty. To finish on a positive note, my COVID test came back NEGATIVE. Yay! Plus, since I never had a fever I do not need to further isolate (per Ohio guidelines). It took 33 hours from when they took my sample to when the email arrived. I'm a retired analytical chemist, so I understand testing protocols and schedules. I'm really impressed by that speed! I'll test the club soon, maybe at the range tomorrow. Today is out, as the rain is hammering down right now in Cincinnati.

Fishing hit a note with me.... We didn’t have much money growing-up, six kids, two teacher salaries, and one of them didn’t start working until I went to school (I’m the baby), oldest is 12 years older than me... So, when I was the last at home for my final two years of HS, my Dad bought a little two-man Coleman boat, with oars. He loved to fish just for the peace-and-quiet. He didn’t care if he caught anything.... He’d always ask me if I wanted to go with him, and find a small lake to paddle around. 99% of the time, I said no... I was always very uncomfortable in that boat, and we never caught anything, which was the reason I would fish.... All of these years later, this is the one thing I would change if I could. I’d have gone fishing with my Dad 50% of the time, at least. I didn’t know then it was just to be around each other, and to enjoy some peace.... Ugh.

  37. Had my second FaceTime lesson with Tyler McGhie yesterday and it went very well. As always with swing changes, this will take time, but I can’t say enough about how much better I like the virtual lesson via FaceTime than sending video and waiting for a reply. I was able to ask questions live, clarify, hit multiple clubs, even joke about how his Coastal Carolina fb team beat my Mountaineers Saturday! I need more range time, which has been tough since our move a couple years back, but hopefully I can find some time to go more often!

  42. Hit up the launch monitor today with the UiHi and a hybrid of mine that I call my "driving hybrid". It's not a club that I currently bag, but was the first hybrid that I got along with. Very anti-left, and great off the tee. The Apex has been shortened one inch from standard down to 39 inches, playing 3/4 of an inch shorter than the UiHi. I've added a +4 grip to neutralize the right hand some. Both of these modifications reduce the swing weight, so I have substituted a 12 gram weight in the head versus the standard 6 gram. Low launch, low spin, 85 gram evenflow black is a touch heavier than standard as well. Ultimately, we get low launch, great control and a flatter lie angle to keep it from hooking. Of course sacrificing some speed, height, and carry to do so. I figured this would be my most similar club to the UiHi in terms of ball flight and potential use on the course. I needed little warmup for the hybrid. I know that club well and turned the monitor on after 2 hits. I captured my next 10 shots without removals. Then I switched to the UiHi, and really struggled for a handful of balls. Not sure if it is the weight, or length, but something throws me off. More than just the obvious difficulty of loft. Eventually, I switched back to the choked down grip that worked better for me on the range yesterday, and then I started to find the clubface again. I then turned the monitor on and captured 10 shots with one removal on a nasty pull hook. All shots with both clubs were from the deck. Clubhead speed and ball speed are pretty similar. Kudos to the UiHi for having the better smash factor. That's pretty impressive for an iron. Especially with the Apex being shorter and my impression that I found the sweet spot better with the hybrid. I also kept the UiHi more on line and with less side spin, although the Apex did its job of being anti left. Ultimately, I am not launching the ball high enough to maximize distance. From a fitting perspective, more loft would help. Bending 2 degrees weak might help. A 4 UiHi might be a better option. Lighter, higher launching graphite shaft could help. But on the flip side, continuing to work with the 3 UiHi and improving my delivery would likely translate to better shots throughout the bag. I am obviously committed to testing the UiHi and am curious to see what else I can get out of it.

With my work I get asked more frequently to golf and I am finding slipping off to hit a quick 9 to be a great way to manage stress etc. Live outside Frederick, MD and get to play courses throughout the Mid Atlantic. My favorites thus far are Little Bennett and Monterery Country Club. Worthington Manor is the closest course to me and I enjoy practicing there. I have a 2 yo going on 3 who likes coming to the practice green and bunkers with me and sometimes I drag my wife out there with me. I’ve got a thing for these clubs from the 1980’s- early 1990’s. Back then, I was hitting mismatched retail store quality irons like Wilson Blue Ridge’s that were piled in my Grandfather’s barn. I could only dream of having some of these sets I have now. And the great thing is, it’s a lot cheaper reliving your youth through vintage golf clubs than vintage cars. 50. I just recently had a client bring in an R-Flex SteadFast driver shaft. He is a 6 handicaper with a nice moderate swing tempo. He didn't like the very high launch angle the shaft was rendering with his Maverik 10.5* Driver, but thought the nice high launch would work well on his Mavrik 4W. I measured the shaft by putting one of my Epic driver heads on it, and set the weight in the head to 200g (club length was close to 45", 44.875"). The freq measured in at 205 CPM, WAY too flexible for this guy. He did confirm that it took a little adjustment on his part to hit it, but he said he hit it pretty straight, just way too high (now we know why, VERY tip flexible). So the plan was to put this on his 4W (the 4W weighed in at 215g a pretty std 4W head weight), but after removing the grip, tape, and shaft adapter the raw shaft weight was about 47g. I was concerned about the light weight and flexibility for a FW metal, and also concerned after reading that they don't recommend tip trimming the shaft. I then measured the tip diameter to see how much of a parallel tip I was dealing with, and got kind of a shocker. The tip diameter for the 1st 3.5" of the tip section measured in a .310" - .314". A far cry from .335". The tip didn't reach .335" until about 5.75" into the shaft. Now we know why the shaft adapters are falling off. The reason is not bad epoxy it's the small tip diameter. I also discovered that this shaft is in no way shape or form "spineless" (360* pure). It wobbled all over the place with the driver head on it, until I rotated the shaft to a pure point, where I marked it for later. So then I reached out to the manufacturer, and their response was very quick. They reaffirmed that they didn't recommend tip trimming and putting it on the 4W, but they never answered my question as to why, or if doing so would be detrimental to the shaft. The initial response was to simply trade it in for the heavier 3W or 5W shaft, and that the FW shaft would render a lower launch angle. Um, but the higher launch angle was the reason my customer wanted it on the 4W in the first place right? In any case I was then directed to the owner, and asked him very specific questions about if we could tip trim the driver shaft to make it work on the 4W, and would doing so be detrimental to the shaft. I also asked about the bend profile of the 3W shaft, and what the relative launch angle difference might be between the 3W and driver shaft. The owner simply responded with a short reply about how tip trimming the driver shaft would change the balance and feel, and the response to the launch angle difference was, "well it is hard to know for sure, because golfers with different abilities have different swings". So much for their marketing paragraph about thousands of hours of launch data testing, and that there is no difference between a robot and golfers of any ability. Anyway, I realize that they really don't know me from Adam, and that they are probably flooded with questions from allot of people, but it would have been nice to get a more specific and technical answer. So my customer (who is also quite technical), decided to simply try the tip trim, and to put it in the 4W. After trimming it 1.25" and having a finished club length of 42.75", we ended up with a freq of 220 CPM and a swing weight of D1. I will say this however, carbon fiber does have some advantages, because it is incredibly strong! So strong in fact that my 14" chop saw had trouble cutting the tip, and the butt. It almost stopped, and I had to cut it gingerly in small steps. We will see how the 4W experiment goes, but after hitting a few shots in the cage it seemed to launch quite nicely for him. My conclusion is, while initially not being that impressed with the quality of the shaft, or the answers from the company, the carbon fiber idea does have allot of potential. SteadFast is in the early stages of proving out the concept in a golf shaft. They are making some strides forward, but are still in a discovery stage. They have a few things to iron out, but I think they are on a good track to offer something unique and innovative. The shaft is incredibly strong, and will probably never ever break (you might break a chop saw before breaking a shaft). I think that once they iron out some of the shaft tolerances, flexibility, and graphic issues, that they will have a pretty good product. For now though, you're going to have to use allot of glass beads in your epoxy to keep it on a club, but I would keep an eye on them.
