  3. Hard to believe I was able to play a round on December 5th in RI, but we had a great day at Pawtucket Country Club; long and straight was the play today. Wind picked up and there were some *long* approaches into a number of par 4's. Was ecstatic to be able to play and the course was in great shape!

Thanks for the encouragement. I actually have a new addiction. I just hit 50 out in the dark, just the porch light on... the road lights give just enough so I can see the ball flight. Now I can practice 24/7.

  5. ... Here is a primer from someone that has lived through it. Just listen to the music of the 70's and it is easy to see there was always a divide in this country. Illustrated by 10 Years After's "Tax the rich, feed the poor, til there are, no rich no more. I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do." The 70's were all about making the world a better place, peace and love. Our hippie hearts were in the right place but we were also young and naive. The 80's came along and the pendulum swung from the 70's to the I'm Gonna Get Mine era. Deregulation spelled the beginning of the end and exploded the gap between the top 10% and the middle class that has slowly disappeared. We had a divide but for the most part it was a respectful divide. Yes there were radicals on both sides but they were the exception not the norm. ... What changed for your generation was the end of the news, replaced by For Profit organizations that exploited the divide. Before that, every news story needed 3 verifiable sources an all news was not slanted in any direction. Kinda like Dragnet "Just the facts Mam." All The Presidents Men is a great film capturing the last of the real news that took over 1 year to expose the Watergate scandal, something that would be broadcast in one day with todays lack of standards. Talk radio and a very slanted side emerged and facts went out the window. News outlets began running stories with one verified sourse and then no sources at all because they were now a For Profit venture. The news had always been a monetary loss leader backed by entertainment programming and once it looked to make a profit, standards had to go by the wayside. Being in broadcasting, many of my friends in the news business left because it was no longer news. It had become commentary and very biased commentary. ... Part of the problem was it took days to get information, so it could be vetted and verified. Today information is instantaneous and virtually impossible to be verified. This is what allowed foreign interference because it is just so easy to get a Facebook account and start creating turmoil in comments. I was amazed at how many attacked vehemently someone with an opposing opinion when all they had to do was go to their homepage and see they had no friends, no pictures, no likes but posting anywhere they could make people mad at each other. Sadly, I have no answer to the solution or even where to start. All I know is being kind, considerate and respecting others with differing opinions has been and always will be the key to a productive democracy.

  6. ... I grew up watching Andy of Mayberry and Leave It To Beaver kind of shows. Shows like The Office might be entertaining but as you said, being snarky and not polite or kind has become the norm. He!! Eddie Haskel was one of the most loathed characters on TV but he is pretty tame compared to todays TV world.

  7. ... It was my first forum of any kind. As someone with an open mind that also enjoys irony and satire, I though the forum was moderated too tightly and didn't allow individual expression. What I later learned was there are trolls, both intentional and unintentional that will bring everyone down around them. Once the original owner/moderator bowed out and let a more lax atmosphere become the standard, I realized the inmates were running the asylum. It is sad that people being kind to each other, regardless of opinions, is something that has to be kept tightly controlled because there are too many out there that did not see kindness and understanding as the norm. ... WRX is a perfect example. There was a thread about comfortable walking golf shoes ands I posted a picture of my Foot Joy Athletic shoes that were very comfortable. The amount of posters attacking those shoes and making fun of them was overwhelming. Once one jumped in with rude comments, the floodgates opened and the trolls tried to out do one another with nasty comments. Completely lost was shoe comfort, the OP's original question.

  8. Forums are privately owned and can, for the most part, do what they want. If a forum chooses to delete specific content, it's their right to do so, just as it's also their right to allow certain topics to continue. We don't have to like or agree with it, because frankly, posters have no say. All we can do is move on to other forums and be done with it, as many of us have with other golf-related forums on the web after seeing the actions the owners and mods took. Re: Usenet - man, was that place an absolute dumpster fire. I was heavily involved in Usenet in the late 90's/early 2000's and boy oh boy talk about insanity. Even in some groups with relatively tame topics (bands, drumming, etc) things would spiral out of control quickly.

  9. ... Just mind boggling to me and why social media has lost it's way. If you look at Covid as a medical issue, the facts are crystal clear. If you want to engage in Covid as a political issue, it is complete chaos.

  10. I am just about done over there period. Heavy handed moderating at it again. One of the Mods I guess did not have anything else to do went into the Club House Grille Section and done some Covid related deletes. Also issued a warning about covid related posts. I know for a fact nothing inflammatory was said. Censorship on there and on Facebook

  11. To me, for the most part internet forums, Social Media, etc. aren't real. What I mean by that is, most people will say things and espouse ideas or opinions that they simply wouldn't do in a face to face conversation. Why? No consequences, for the most part. Also, there's a large degree of anonymity involved as well. When people think no one knows who they are, and there's no real life consequences, they say and do dumb things. The internet has become the 21st century version of "kicking the dog". Instead of that person who smiles at work all day and opens doors for people then goes home and kicks their dog, now they go online and spew garbage instead. Hopefully their pets are safe! People who are public figures know that no matter what they say and do, their fans will eat it up and people who don't like them will continue to not like them. If anything it helps their popularity, even when people are hate-sharing their posts. It's kind of a worthless endeavor in my own opinion, but that's me. But for the 99.9% rest of us, forums like this are a great place to talk and sometimes, some of us feel the need to go to extremes for no other reason than simply feeling like we can, and get away with it. Some forums cater to that. Thankfully, MGS does not. That's why this is the only golf forum I've contributed to for nearly 3 years. Honestly, we're almost a bit of an outlier because golf is a social sport. So a bunch of us have met with other posters to play golf, swap clubs, etc. and when there's real life interactions, most people will be a lot closer to their true selves online because they know if it comes down to it, they want to have friendly interactions when in person. Someone who comes off like a jerk online probably isn't going to get a lot of invites to walk 18 with another poster, or get the opportunity to test new clubs. If someone goes too far, they'll get banned from a forum and what do they do? Create a new persona, or go start posting on another forum. It's the internet, there's countless places for just about every hobby or activity there is So again, no "real" consequences so they say and do whatever as a result. All in all, like I've said before, MGS is a great place to talk golf because we're all civil for the most part, and we treat others like we want to be treated. When that doesn't happen, mods step in immediately. Lots of other forums where that either doesn't happen at all, or in the other direction mods are overzealous with shutting things down, whether it's political, disinformation, or talking about a golf OEM that the site owners aren't getting kickbacks from. In the end, when there's a lot of options to take part in, I think that's a good thing. People who want to flame others because they feel like there are no consequences have other places to hang out, and they're not here. That's fine by me.

... I applaud you for taking the risk of moving to an iron the might reward you with more accuracy and control but also might be more than you can handle. You never know until you try. Unless you need max forgiveness, and some do, finding the sweet spot for your skill means moving out of your comfort zone. That can mean trying something more forgiving or trying something more demanding. Sounds like you are zeroing in on what will be the best irons for your swing/game.

  13. ... You and I watched another forum implode after allowing politics to filter into the forum. The problem with politics is those on the far edges that are so ignorant, have no idea they are waaaaaay on one side or the other and will rant, abuse and denigrate anyone that is not in lock step with their opinion. Sadly quite a few there were in lock step and it destroyed what was once a similar forum to MGS. As Silver and Black said, it is always good to hear others opinions especially those different than your own if presented respectfully, something almost impossible in todays divided country stoked by social media and for profit media outlets.

  16. ... I was telling my 93 yr old Mom about the coyote and she reminded me of a robin that fell out of it's nest and I nursed him back to health. I built a nest on the back porch but he preferred my head LOL. He would fly out of the nest into my head and dig in my hair and I would walk around the house with him on my head. After about 2 weeks he flew away. I had completely forgotten about him until my Mom sent me the picture:

  28. none of the above. i avoid short-term rentals like the plague for a bunch of reasons. 1. you’re gonna have to use a management company which will eat into your margins pretty heavily 2. people who rent short term vacation properties don’t give two craps about your property. they treat it like a flop house and clean up after themselves just well enough to get their security deposit back. for reference - i’m a landlord in my day job. i own commercial real estate in New York, and a few residential properties in Florida. i’ve tried short term a few times and i’ve regretted it each time. i’d stay really far away from short term rentals.

  33. From my perspective, I can't hold that against them. Some topics almost certainly generate topic degeneration, like politics, and unfortunately COVID. Even if the discussions are currently civil, they will inevitably draw the sorts of posts and people who turn it into a dumpster fire. It's unavoidable, sadly. It's killed a lot of forums and Usenet groups.

    How'd you play?

My wife and I played Summerfield Crossing in Riverview, Fl. today. A bit pricey for what it was ($89. including tax). Overall the course was ok, fairly narrow, lots of trees and LOTS of water. Didn't see any alligators - I've become very good at spotting them[emoji12]. Lost 4 balls on the front and 1 on the back. Fortunately my wife had just reloaded her bag so I could borrow some. Even though I lost 5 balls, I still ended up with an 89 and she carded a 97.

  46. .., I will be making the switch to a Mizuno T-20 58* from my Vokey SM8 58*. I love Vokeys but the sole on the T-20 performed better for me from the sand and tight lies, which I will be facing in Phoenix. Gotta say when the fitter handed me a Mizuno wedge I just was not interested but it was a fitting I paid for so I tried it and glad I did. No need to change my 52* since my Vokey was as good as any of the wedges I hit but the Mizuno 58* was a clear winner for me. It really is kinda amazing that the sole can make that much difference coming out of the sand, but it performed much better than any other wedge for me and I did not have to work as hard as I did with other wedges.

  47. There's a not insignificant troll population at WRX, and they are getting more active. Sad. If you were to post at WRX, asking for advice, it would be reasonable to expect a flurry of comments that range across disbelief, snarky comments, and outright accusations of lying. Happens every time someone with clubhead speed chimes in. Going on right now, or it did, in the last few days, in the "anyone not use a fairway wood thread." The expectation is what's reasonable. The responses themselves, not so much. It's not really just a WRX thing, I've seen it on just about every golf forum I've been on over the years. For some reason, guys just don't want to believe it, usually because they don't see it too often. And they like to tie "distance" with "scoring ability," though they're not actually directly related. It's interesting. Beyond that, there's a number of folks who seem to lack imagination, or the ability to extrapolate, and like to jump on anything that's even the slightest bit outside their range of experience. A lot of this is really just the Human Condition, at least in part. Makes me wonder sometimes how we've survived as a species. LOL

I had roughly 22 feet of baseboard to do for the room. I bought 4 1x4s and 3 1x5s from Home Depot. Add in some angle brackets to slide in on the back over the baseboard casing and I was out the for for $108. Essentially did the entire room for about the coast of one metal panel.
