    A special thanks

A special thanks to Forum members I noticed this morning that it was four years today that I joined MGS. I didn’t keep my old stats, but I’ll bet I was struggling to break 100 at the time and only had a cursory knowledge of equipment and the game. Thanks to the advice of many of you, and the knowledge I picked up from your posts, I routinely break 90 and have a target of breaking 80 (hopefully this year). Not too bad for a guy that took up golf in retirement. Being on the MGS Forum and Blog is like an advanced degree in golf knowledge. I know more about equipment, rules and course management, then I could have learned anywhere else, not to mention meeting some great people. However, still a lot more to learn and birdies to make. Thanks Guys and Gals.

  2. After my recent trial of the new 2021 drivers, and the trial of the “sledgehammer” that is now in my bag, it was plainly evident that I didn’t get “faster” with a lighter shaft. Robert Head, owner of Xphlexxx shafts, has been making this point with Long Drive competitors for years. Well, this morning, as I scrolled through Facebook, I see a post by TPI: “Less than 10% of 1200 golfers tested fastest with the lightest shaft.” Liam Mucklow from The Golf Lab So, when you go an do your fittings this year, don’t just assume you’ll pick-up speed because you switch from a 70g shaft to a 50g one. As TPI states in the post, robots may show faster, but humans aren’t robots!!!

  3. Another thought in many coaching circles is that a heavier shaft forces your body to engage the larger muscles, which means that there is potential for greater speed if those muscles are engaged properly (and proper sequencing isn’t sacrificed)
    8 points
  4. I have found this to be true even in doing SuperSpeed work. While my light stick is most often slightly faster than my medium stick, I definitely lose the feel of the lighter club and struggle to sequence things properly for max speed.
    8 points
  5. Yup. It’s all about finding the weight, profile and stiffness that allows your body to sequence properly. An out of sequence swing is a slow swing

    2021 Fantasy Golf

It's just the normal FAAB waivers process you'd have in any fantasy league. If you do nothing, no one will be added to your team. If you place bids on 10 guys, you'll get the first 2 that you win. If you try to claim 2 but only win 1, you'll get the 1 guy you won and still need to add another. PS. FAAB means you bid some your budget towards the claim. Highest bid wins. You only get $100 for the whole year so bid smartly. Since there's 5 copies of each player, bids of $10, $2, and $0 could each still get the player if there's still 3 copies available to be added....the $10 guy just overpaid. You can tell how many copies are owned in the "own" stats column.

  10. Had the shop build me up this from the Callaway demo cart while I was at the range today - Numbers looked pretty good with range balls, and I really liked the MMT, though I think I'd go up to the 105 if I could for a bit more weight: This was more of an experiment to try out the MMT than anything else, but, man, did this thing feel pretty nice.

In all fairness I am guessing that anyone who added players much like yourself didn't do it to cheat the system and just had all well meaning when adding players. With a big league like ours there is always bound to be a few bugs and things for us to sort out and fix. Was great that the draft went as smoothly as it did and was so quick. Hindsight wish I had traded back and picked up a extra 6th round pick or two.

  20. I recall this trend in the 90s. Make everything lighter. People were hitting the ball all over with no control. Then playing a 7 degree driver because the shafts had so much whip and high torque the ball launched far too high. I just remember caddying for these 35 year old guys with R flex 55 gram shafts and just hitting drop kicked hooks and fades all over. Take Dead Aim

Thanks everyone - it turns out that it’s her gall bladder. My son had his removed at 20, niece at 17. Obviously this is a genetic thing. However what’s simple for most isn’t so for her. She’s in ICU for close observation while they treat the infection. Once that’s below a dull roar they will remove the Gall Bladder. Good progress last night - fever is gone and heart rate improving Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  22. Very true. So much depends on how you feel the club loading and coming through the impact zone. For plenty of players feeling is lost with lighter setups and you’ll swing slower because you’re not as confident in it. Side note: I’ll be following along to see how that beast treats you this season! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  23. OK yes, can confirm the ghostly added players problem is fixed. The only one who has a full roster now is @sirchunksalot because he fleeced...I mean traded for extra picks Also, I have an important announcement re: schedule As the perpetual beta testers, we maxed out Fantrax's system. The all play schedule (everyone plays everyone every week) just couldn't handle the amount of teams we have. 60 worked fine last year but that appears to be the limit. Some of you observant folks may have noticed this already but we're moving to 10 matchups each week. 9 against other owners and 1 against the league median. This seemed like a nice round number and takes some of the randomness of a schedule out of play. Sucks to lose the tournament feel of taking a big boost by winning the week, but what can ya do?? Playoffs will still keep the same format.

  26. Just bought 3 Cleveland Zipcore wedges. Tour satin finish, 50/54/58 all in mid bounce. Custom shafts, Project X LZ 5.5 to match my irons. Hopefully they don’t try to add an up charge for the shafts. managed to sell a few benched clubs, still a few more to sell so I probably won’t get in too much trouble for buying them.

    How'd you play?

Tried to play today, but slow play, cold weather, and drizzling rain ended our round early. After playing 4 holes (3-some), we encountered a slow group and decided to go around them, skipping a hole...turns out we skipped 5,6, and 7 to avoid the 2 slower groups. By the time we got to 13, we came across another group. We knew they played quicker, so we weren't worried, but after playing 13, we saw 2 more groups in front of them, both 4-somes and both walking, so after playing 14, we cut across the street taking us to the inside 9 of our 27 hole course and teed off on #4. By now, the temperature had dropped significantly and the mist was rolling in. After 5, it started drizzling and we quit after playing 6. No idea, what I shot or would have shot, but I did not win our game of nines. Bought a lottery ticket and I might be a billionaire by this weekend.....or I might not. Snow is in the forecast for next week. If you followed this rambling post this far, you really need to find something better to do with your time. LOL. Peace out, my friends!

My Prius somehow has some very small amount of water leaking into the interior cabin, some sort of weatherproof sealing somewhere is leaking. My bright idea is that i want to trade it in and get a pickup truck instead.

    How'd you play?

12 Bacon Boyz this morning! 5 of them off the Covid-19 virus, glad to see they’re doing pretty good. I haven’t played much expectations were low. Shot 5 over for the 9 so felt really good. Only one bad Tee Shot, putting was poor but have an excuse, greens lightly sanded and poor shape. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  32. Hopefully it'll work out and leave me a full budget of my FAAB money as the season progresses. @blackngold_blood gave me an offer I couldn't refuse, trading away my 15th overall pick for 59th and some extras in the later rounds. Will it work out? We'll see, I did lose out on some of the top players (DJ, Rahm, Rory, DeChambeau, etc...) and it'll be a wait and see game whether or not I end up underneath a falling anvil.

  35. I have learned this (lighter shafts don't always equate to increase performance) through trial/error over many years. Spent a small fortune it seems on lighter exotic shafts, club heads only to learn that I have a certain total weight driver and/or shaft weight range which I swing efficiently with consistent swing speed and center contact.

    Is the 3 Wood dead?

I hit my driver on every hole that's not a par 3, and I hit it on one par 3 if the wind is in my face. I don't hit any FW straighter than I hit driver. As a slower swinger I do need a FW for 2nd shots on par 5's and longer par 4's to get as close to the green as possible. I can hit a 3W but not consistently well enough to routinely play it. For a couple of years I played a 2H as my longest non-driver club, but I need more distance so I went with a 4W. I'm still learning how to hit it and depending on the lie, I still use my 2H.

  37. I used to be that guy who always pounded driver on every hole, even when it wasn't really warranted. The past couple seasons however I've shifted to more of my 3 wood off the tee, in addition to the plays on long par 5's. My scores have dropped dramatically as well as has my consistency in % of FIR. I think a lot of people do tend to not play their 3 wood as much as they should, but you could see some real advantages of not carrying one and going with a 4 or 5 wood instead. I suppose the biggest question you have to ask is how do you play the game and what do you want to do with your set ups. If the strength of your game is short game, it definitely would make sense if you're not hitting the 3 much to take it out and put another specialty wedge in for chipping or short shots into the green. Great thing about golf equipment, there is no right or wrong way to do it! You can individualize your set up however you feel comfortable.

    Is the 3 Wood dead?

Hit that hybrid! If it means more fairways and greens then it doesn't make much of a difference. The idea that a bag should have certain clubs is tired logic, there's no reason to carry tools you can't use properly.

Yes....its called the associative property and when it comes to justifying pick up's there is a generous relationship allowance! I've had a truck since the 80's and a trailer since the early 2000's and I tend to attract friends whenever they have a move coming up.

  45. I was initiating the takeaway thinking about my trail wrist if that makes sense. Look at a face-on view of Bobby Jones with a driver. With soft wrists I start the backswing with my arms/wrists actually bowing the trail wrist a little. The club lags behind then catches up. This prevents the club from being pulled to the inside (old, old habit that comes back periodically). When I get to transition, I get more rotation and the club comes more from the inside on the downswing. Much better strike; more distance and straighter shots. Now the truth will be known tomorrow when I take it to the course.

    Is the 3 Wood dead?

Most high handicappers/slower swingers should be gaming 4woods or 5Woods instead. They simply don’t have the club head speed to elevate a 3w, especially off the deck. Give that player a 4 wood or 5 wood and watch them carry it further than any 3 wood they’ve tried to hit.

I tried the left dash balls and the two together felt AWESOME. The pic is the sim I’ll go to Sunday, where I usually go, that seems more accurate. So get this.... I normally have my drive in play and this was the case for the day. I hit a drive straight down the middle of the fairway on hole # 7. This not a course I normally play. Then I see a small beagle dog run out and pick up my ball and run back into the woods. I tee up another and the same dam thing happens. So I proceed to go out to where my ball would have been. I see the dog and a little further behind him is this man in chest waders carrying a sack of balls. I proceed to tell him that his dog picked up my ball from the fairway and he shows me the sack and sure enough there are my two balls near the top with probably three dozen other balls. He said he was sorry and he trained his dog to fetch golf balls for him but he was still working on training him to only get balls from the woods. Fist thoughts were that was freaking genius. So I said to him, what if my ball went just off the fairway into the woods and I went to look for it and now your dog took it. He said if it goes in the woods it is fair game. Finders keepers. So now I went from impressed to pissed in 10 seconds. So I didn't want to get into an altercation on a what if scenario with this older gentlemen. I did get my balls back and since it was an outside agency acting on my ball I didn't incur a penalty. So I just walked away knowing the Pro shop was two holes away. At the turn I went into the Pro shop and told them what was going on during the course's open hours of play time. The reply was "oh that's just old Harry. He's harmless and collects lost balls and sells them in his yard on the 15th hole. Then I said he dog was taking them from the fairway while in play. Then the reply was well I guess that was just bad timing. Obviously I was not going to get anywhere with this guy. Must have been an old Harry fan! So my back nine was not pretty. Not focused and pissed. Wanting to hit his house on 15 so I can tell him he shouldn't have built a house on a golf course. Not to mention looking out of the corner of my eye for that dam dog. (I am a dog guy, nothing against the dog) How many golfers were getting penalized for a lost ball that potentially wasn't. You just never know what you can run into on a Golf Course! No I didn't send a ball his way on 15.
