  1. ... Here is the thing about what type of irons are appropriate for what type of golfer. This is my personal opinion from my years teaching as well as observing thousands of golfers through the years. Golf is extremely difficult to execute well on any given day. You want equipment that enhances your abilities not interferes with your abilities. I have never liked the theory of playing irons that are more challenging than your ability because it will help you become a better ball striker. I can't remember the author of this quote but I think it is quite accurate "Golf is 75% mental. The other 25% is mental." What makes every player a better ball striker is positive results from hitting better shots. Hitting a too difficult to control iron low and right forces your brain to make adjustments to hit the ball higher and straight when often those adjustments are not needed because again swinging full out and hitting the center of the club face while remaining on plane and swinging as fast as you can control without over swinging or swinging too methodically is always a challenge. It is for the 18 index as well as the guy on tour that came in the top 10 one week and missed the cut the next week. ... So over simplified, play clubs that help you hit your best shots most consistently. Do not play irons you will "grow into" but play irons that help you play your best right now. You can always change irons as your ability increases but for most, that ability to increase your ball striking is directly related to how well you hit the ball right now. Using a SGI iron the helps you attain an ideal trajectory and helps with your mishits is exactly what you should be playing. If you do not need help getting the ball in the air or you miss the center by a small margin you will probably play better with GI or Players Irons. Your golf clubs should always fit your swing so you should never try and make your swing fit your golf clubs. ... I cannot stress strongly enough all of my students improved when they started seeing better shots. Better shots resulted in more confidence and more confidence resulted in better shots. My students that really struggled with the golf swing and hit the ball poorly always made too many adjustments attempting to hit better shots or even worse, changed nothing and expected better results. So a fitting is always a great place to start but playing the most forgiving irons you can effectively play (which is different for every level of player) and hitting good shots right now is always your best chance to play well and improve.

  2. First thank you to @Popeye64 for hooking me up with a maltby 7i and a brand new wedge. please help me tag people who want to follow this that I am missing @Chip Strokes @dlow206 @Hotdocta @Popeye64 This has been a long time coming, but because of covid it took a long time to get a few single modus 125 wedge shaft and a few single modus 120TX 7i shaft so the playing field is as even as possible. I will be using fully built clubs and not club connex to give everything the fairest chance. this will be broken down into 2 categories. Wedge and Iron. And of course this is subjective to me only, but if it performs I will give me honest opinion. Wedge will be first followed by irons incase we need to expand past the 7i for a better view for the wedge the Maltby (56*) will be going up against my gamer the Mizuno T20 the new TW MG2 and what some would consider the holy grail the Mirua tour wedge. All will be built with a modus 125 wedge shaft lie angle bent to 62* and loft at 56*. Length will be 35.5”. Grip will be the NDMC black on black and swing weight will be made to D5. wedge scoring 1. Launch monitor performance including the wet wedge test. I will rent a trackman and hit enough balls to get a good data set. This is the most important factor for me since I play in Texas. (35%) 2. Bunker performance. I will film shots and post a video. Volvik was kind enough to donate 3 boxes of the new S4 balls in multiple colors so we can track and see the results clearly. Workability proximity to the hole durability etc will be how this is scored. (25%) 3. on course performance. I will head to a par 3 course that has a 105 yard hole. 3/4 56 with my gammer I can carry 115 with 13k in spin. Same deal as the bunker, but will also factor in s*** shipping ability. (25%) 4. Ease of assembly. This is important because many people who purchase maltby build themselves. I have taken everything apart to the component level. When I bend them I want to see how long everything stays in place. I will take before and after measurements. I figure it will have about 500 balls on it so should be a good test. (10%) 5. This will be the first scoring but the least weighted. It is shelf appeal. While this is not the purpose major OEM’s use this to get us to buy. Also wedges are speciality clubs IMO and I don’t care as much about the look of I did I would not have the T20 as my gammer since it’s ugly. (5%) Iron scoring This will be the same for the most part except the weighting will be a tad different. Specs will also be D3.5 playing at 37.25” lie angle of 61* loft will all be adjusted to 33* to standardize. Shaft will be the modus 120TX. Grip will be the either the Lamkin st-2 hybrid midsize or ts1 midsize since I will be out of the NDMC. Contestants will be the Maltby Ts1-forged vs my gamer the Mizuno mp20 MMC the honma tr20v srixon zx7 and maybe one more tbd. Stock carry at 34* loft is 186 yards. (My Mp20 mmc are -2 weak) 1. Launch monitor. (25%) I don’t really care much about this with irons I just want to know carry & spin and shot grouping. 2. bunker performance (anyone who knows my game knows I am a magnet for the fairway bunker). (Part of on course) 3. On course performance. This will be the highest weighted category. The same par 3 course has a hole with a 190 yard pin in the middle which I would use a 7i they also have a hole with a 175 yard front pin which I would play a cut into also with a 7i. Will also hit a course and test approach shots and situations. (40%) 4. Ease of assembly. (15%) 5. Curb appeal. (20%) this is higher because of the overall cost of investment. It will also be the first category scored once I get all the heads in. This is also more important to me because the look has a lot to do with how you feel it might interact with the turf among other factors. stay tuned first video comes this week!

My wife delivered dinner to me tonight and I have to say it's one of the most intriguing dishes she's put down in front of me. She told me it was French Onion Chicken, and it was delicious! Chicken, cheese, French Onion mix, French onion soup, and lots and lots of onions on top of Texas garlic toast. We paired it with salad for the health benefits because the main course wasn't what I'd call healthy. Did I mention lots of onions? My eyes were burning while she was prepping it and I couldn't figure out why.

  5. One other small cosmetic change today. I painted the bottom groove white on each of the heads as an alignment aid. (That small hole in the paint will be unnoticeable once I get some dirt in the grooves. Still bugs me, though.) This also showed up over my lunch hour and will be installed and curing this evening in the 4 iron, to be gripped tomorrow and demo'ed on Saturday. I'm hoping to have a more in depth post this weekend about my demo process for the shaft and what numbers I get out of it: Cool to see the metal mesh wrapped in the tip.

    Got Problems?

Losing a family member is hard; can’t imagine losing both parents that close together. Underlying conditions or not, whether the death rate is .01% or 10% COVID is a terrible illness since it seems to impact everyone differently. I lost my mother to COVID a couple of weeks ago and she had few traditional symptoms. All I can suggest is that you let you friend know that you are there to support her.

I got back at him though... He was in the back of the truck getting the box and I said I guess you got a present for me. But he didn't hear me he had his ear buds in and in the groove. He turned around and I was right there. He jumped so high he almost hit the roof of the truck. Braced himself and said I scared the living sh#t out of him. I told him I called out to him and then told him he should never arrive when my wife was leaving. He should have known better with a box shaped like that. We both laughed. But that didn't last long that's when I turned around to the wife standing there.

    How'd you play?

Played well through 10, then the winds picked up and temps dropped while I choked for 5 holes, and finished up par, par, par. 38/42 for an 80. On the 16th hole, the sun peeked out nicely. (I'm the clown on the left ).

That's funny, the same thing happened to me while waiting for the JB wedge from Sub-70. I watched the truck on the map go past the turn to my house three times. I was excited because it would have been at the house early enough before my wife left for work. He was in my area at 10:30. My wife was going into work at 1:00. The truck shows up at exactly 1:00. I tried going through the garage to quicken the exchange. But my wife went out the back door at the same time. BUSTED...… Any time before 12:45 or after 1:15 I would have been in the clear. All I heard was "don't even tell me it was on sale and too good to pass up" My reply was "have a nice day at work dear" as I skulk my way back to the house.

  12. I find the Vice Pro is very similar in performance to the Bridgestone Tour B XS which has been my gamer for the past year. The biggest reason why I haven't continued to use the Vice Pro and replaced it with the Bridgestone is because of the finish. I just hate the matte(ish) finish on the Vice balls. After looking at all the various tests and learning more about ball performance and design though, I'm thinking I may be making a permanent switch to Snell. I've played Snell before and loved the performance, but didn't like the feel. Well, I just ordered a test pack because I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of feel if it will give me the performance I need at the price I want.

If you’re after distance, pretty much any ball that is described as “soft” will NOT accomplish your goal. The marketing of “soft” balls using the words “increased distance” are not comparing the soft model to a Tour caliber ball. Sure, this new one may get more “distance” than a Supersoft, but what does that mean??? Supersofts are marshmallows and go nowhere. Any company that sells you on “distance” in marketing their soft ball lines is simply lying.

  16. Looks like they’re going to be following the style or analysis Arccos has implemented. The one thing Arccos gives that this might not (at first anyway) is how your shots gained compare to various handicap levels. It’s nice to see where you are gaining or losing strokes against your peer group which should be more meaningful for your improvement.

  17. Good point. More than ever, we seem to have leaped into the fast swing speed = goodness era. But, fast swing speed with poor sequence = no Bueno. 99% of pros have great to excellent sequencing and can put the fast swing speed to good use.... consistently (keyword here). I personally struggle with fast tempo and constantly have to remind myself to slow down. My turn is somewhat limited and for the longest time I felt I had to extend that to get distance... nope, not the case. Tony Finau is my hero The video provided is excellent and offers some simple tools to improving something a lot of us amateurs struggle with. Good thread/topic @Zeebedy.

If a guy shows up to the first tee with super shiny clubs that aren't obviously brand new .... I'm playing him for everything in my wallet! If a guy shows up to the first tee with well-used clubs that look like the finish is well worn .... I'm not playing that guy for money, or I'll get cider in my ear! Learn to embrace the well-worn look! Ever seen what the pros' bags look like? Generally well worn, and with dime-sized wear on the sweet spot!

  23. I had this same experience for the first two years of doing the sticks. Those numbers are eerily similar to mine across the board. Two years ago, the first year I had the sticks, I hit 141 once with green, but never really got the blue above 125 or the red above 116. The green most of the time would be upper 120s/low 130s. I would guess most of my on course swings that year were in the upper 90s/100. And on the range my SwingCaddie confirmed that. Still, before SuperSpeed I was about 94 MPH on the SwingCaddie, so it was a bit of progress. Last year I more consistently got the green stick to the mid 130s, blue didn't move much, and the red went up to 118-119. In addition to SuperSpeed, I went through 12 weeks of Fit For Golf's offseason program and also bought a power rack and started to lift weights consistently for the first time in my life. I switched to the FlightScope Mevo, which probably over reads club speeds a bit, but I was around 104-106 on the range with ball speeds (range balls) in the low-mid 150s. On course my average drive went up to the 250-260 mark from about 230. I started taking lessons in the middle of all of this, but with COVID hitting and lack of practice I had basically reverted to my pre-lesson self by April 2020. This winter I've gone away from doing the specific protocols and recently have just been focused on two things. One, getting the red and blue clubs faster and two, swinging my driver as fast as I can both with and without balls. I have continued to lift (following Wendler's 5/3/1 now), and after my lessons in August and September feel like some things really started to click in my swing. The last few times out at the range I've recorded average club head speeds at 110 MPH, and have topped 160 MPH ball speed a few times. There have been a few technique changes here and there, but mostly I just feel like I'm going to swing with intent to go fast and worry about the direction later. It doesn't seem like I've actually lost any accuracy, but I know once I get out on the course I'll tighten up a bit. It's inevitable. My hope is that I get my "cruising" speed higher so that I don't need to go all out to hit a 110+ MPH number. Lately, I've been doing (all dominant side): 3x Green 3x Blue 3x Red 3x Blue 3x Red 3x Green Both blue and red are slowly creeping up. Today's best speeds were 139/132/123. It has been slow progress, but it's still progress. This was a long post to say stick with it, and I recommend grabbing a lesson to see what kind of power leaks might be present in your swing. For me personally, I need to focus on a better turn and also feeling like my head stays in place on the downswing. Otherwise I get steep and flippy, which robs me both of clubhead speed and distance.

  24. In my opinion, Vice Pro/Pro Plus and Snell MTB-X and MTB-B are comparable to any ball on the market. It's just a matter of which ball fits your expectations better and gives the necessary performance where you want to see it most. For me, I want the most performance around the small greens of my home club. I'm willing to sacrifice a few yards of distance off the tee to get that additional spin and control. It's an added bonus to get the incredible feel of the Vice Pro. Getting a bulk rate of $26.99 for Vice or $29.99 for Snell makes these balls even more appealing. Especially considering you really aren't losing performance by not using a major OEM Tour ball.

  26. Here's my thoughts on it. I've been using a "Value" metric for the ball lab quick reference which is just the inverse of what Tony uses to show the difference between True Price and MSRP (MSRP/TP=Value vs. TP/MSRP=% Over Retail). If you look at that Value metric the same as you would a grading scale, then anything 80% and up is above average. Now, because the real world doesn't quite work that way and it is reasonable to expect more from manufacturing, I'd consider anything north of say 85% or 88% to be a decent quality ball. I mean at that point we're talking about 1-2 bad balls per dozen which IMO isn't bad, and in the real world, it doesn't actually work that way - you might get a perfect dozen this time, and the next have 3 bad balls, then 1 bad ball, then 0 bad balls, and so forth. You could even get multiple dozens of perfectly serviceable golf balls before you ever come across one bad ball. So based on that criteria, any of the following balls would be worth testing and putting into your bag: Bridgestone Tour B RX Bridgestone Tour B XS Callaway Chromesoft X Maxfli Tour Snell MTB-X Srixon Z-Star Taylormade TP5 Taylormade TP5X Titleist -ProV1x Titleist ProV1 Vice Pro And there are still 16 urethane balls to test not including new releases such as the new ProV1 & ProV1x and Srixon is getting ready to drop a new ball as well.

I think the marketing is giving you confirmation bias. 3% larger is less than 2mm in diameter. I highly doubt that your family members are hitting a ball better because it is 1.5mm bigger than another ball

    Got Problems?

I still can't. Both parents were sick with COVID, her mother collapsed and was hospitalized for a week before she passed. Within hours of her loss, her father's breathing became very difficult so he was rushed to the hospital and placed on a vent. He passed three days after his wife. I have to think that the sudden loss of his wife may have played a part in his rapid decline. We're all worried sick for our friend who understandably has not taken this well.

  30. From what I understand, it’s coming in phases. Right now it’s just enough for them to say they have strokes gained. If you’re familiar with Arccos or Golf Metrics platforms for strokes gained, this is nothing in comparison. It gives you strokes gained averages for the current season for driving, approach, short game, and putting vs a pro. The picture you see in their add is literally all you get right now. I use shot scope and have been begging them to add strokes gained. I’ve been using Golf Metrics for strokes gained but it’s incredibly annoying to have to go back and manually enter every shot for every round. I can’t wait until they get it fully up and running, which they say should be this summer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  32. Smart ass. LoL. Yes I play by myself allot and practice on the course like 4-6 times a week. If I hit a ball in woods I do not go looking for more then a cursory drive by. Thats why I buy used balls, they are cheap and decent quality, then I do not mind losing them. I will sometimes try the same shot 5 or 6 times in a row to see what I can and cannot do. I am trying to hit fades, draws, long approaches, stingers, knock downs lobs etc so yes I lose allot of balls. Especially off tee, I am rarely playing it safe, If i am hitting into dog leg left i try to hit perfect draw. All this practice on a course is really good for me. When I am keeping score I have gone from mid to high 90s to mid to mid 80s in 7 months. So for me, I could care less about cost of golf balls so I do not waste time looking for them. Besides, when I do look I find all those PROV1's an put them in my bag. Maybe I am crazy. For example today I played nine holes in some pretty cold and windy conditions, I had course to myself, I think I lost 6 to 8 balls. I was hitting over water and was trying to draw it and reach apron off tee. It was like 320 line of site, a little draw at 285 would get me in with lob wedge. I hit two in a row into drink right at edge of fairway. It was fun. On an island green par 3 160, I was hitting 7 iron into wind trying to work right to.left as green slopes away to right and whenever I hit fade it slides down right side. I hit two to left of green pin high in some nice fluffy grass. I bladed one straight into water, hit a fade that bounced off back apron into water. I love to play and I probable do lose more balls then most people while practicing. I hit so many awesome, truly amazing shots. Its all worth while to me. So far I am on my second bag of 120 balls. I probable have about 50-70 balls, supersofts and chromesoft x left.

  41. More great information from Tony. I've found an played a few Vice Pro and Pro Plus balls and they seem pretty good. Like Snell, they offer a much more price competitive option to the Titleist, Bridgestone, Srixon, etc. tour balls. To be honest, I'd have a hard time paying 30+% more for the the BIG name balls. The more I read about these tests, discussions in the forum, and the NPG staff, the more I'm questioning how much several of these measured attributes really matter to the vast majority of users? For instance, at what amount of off center core concentricity will we notice adverse performance? Don't get me wrong, I love that MGS is serving as an independent referee on "claimed vs. actual" ball quality, but can some of these differences between mfg.'s. and balls be summed up as "picking the fly dung out of the pepper"?

Looking forward to this year! I haven't gone for a professional fitting yet, just tried out different clubs over a period of time at Golf Galaxy in the rental hitting bays, then bought everything from Callaway Pre-Owned or eBay. After shooting in the mid 80s the 3 rounds of the season, seems like a good setup compared to last year when shooting in the low 90s.

  43. Went to the sim today to test out these bad boys head to head: I will be doing a little review at some point as I use the RDX but I don't think there is even a question at this point. I had 40 swings on both shafts (sets of 5) today and if the numbers didn't speak for themselves the feel did. This was my averages over the sets and today was not a very fast Swing Speed day whatsoever and the hulk felt like a 3 inch dowel while the RDX was extremely smooth, with substantially less spin. Will cover in a review down the road but I never get below 3k spin and I did a few times today. Also figured out what setting I should be on with the titleist adapter and that is A2. my club face was varying between 1 degree open to 1 degree closed on average which I was very happy with. Was also very happy with my path today which as usual was out to in but was much closer to a straight path consistently. I don't typically see close to a straight path consistently
