  1. So my plans to play three rounds in Myrtle Beach last week didn't work out very well. Went to play with Bid Stu on Monday. Got to the course and the rain came down for 20 minutes. Once it stopped the sun came out but the owners decided to close the course. So Big Stu and I chatted for a while but never got to play. Tuesday my resort got me a tee time at Beachwood at a discounted rate. The course wasn't up to MB standards in my opinion. Bare spots on tee boxes, crab grass in fairways, compacted sand traps. I played back a set of tees to play with the group I was paired with. Had a tough time with the thicker humidity and being at sea level and was short a lot on approaches. No matterhowmany timesitold myself to club up one, i didn't listen to myself. Wound up with an 80. But met a bunch of nice guys and had a good time. Thursday was going to go back down and play with Big Stu but teen drama struck. I had to stick around and keep the girls in check. They met some boys and one of our chaperones left Thursday morning. Headed back to TN Friday morning. Got to play my home course today. Three bogies and four birdies for a 70. Back on track. Hit 100 percent of the fairways.

Took my step-father-in-law out for a round to celebrate his birthday yesterday. 32°, in England!!! Shot my best score yet, gross 84. Including a birdie on the SI 1 - 14th. 260y hybrid, easy 165y uphill 7i, 18" tap in. I've never scored less than 5 Hit 3 of 4 par 3's too. A few, silly, dropped shots and an OB on 18 - starting to feel like I can play this game

    How'd you play?

Played a course yesterday that I had never played before in Norman, Ok. Short (6200 from the tips), fun and green, Westwood Park is a great place to play if you're in the area as it requires you to think pretty hard throughout each hole. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hit the ball great. Even though I only shot 83 I managed my way around the course well and didn't have a single penalty! One of my goals for this next year is to play in the Washita Valley Invitational next July. In order to do that my game and headspace needs some serious work. I usually average at least 2 penalties even in my best round and yesterday, I didn't have ANY! Plus I made a 30 ft bomb on 18 the play the last 4 at -1. I will be coming back to that course!

    How'd you play?

Started out OK today with a 39 on the front nine (+2); 3 bogeys and a birdie. The birdie was a chip-in on the par 3 #8 playing 203 yards. Miffed that the bogeys all came on the 3 par 5's. However, I did manage a par on the par 4 #7. Green is 40 yards deep... pin in the back and I was on the front... 100 foot putt to a foot from the hole. Wheels fell off on the back nine; triple bogey on the par 3 #12... plugged lie in bunker under the lip; followed by a double on the par 4 #16 from just poor ball striking. I managed to birdie the par 3 #17 and par my nemesis hole #18... so a 41 on the back nine and a round of 80. It got hot towards the end of the round; 97º and the humidity was unusually high at 60%.

Monday morning Exec 9 at course next to our house. Friday saw the crew too dressing the greens and hoped it wouldn’t be too bad….wrong, greens were horrible. I was hitting the ball pretty good but putting was ridiculous. Figured I would work on Tempo so all was not lost.

I recently had been struggling with my driver, so I added lead tape and it really helped me square up the face. I am still adjusting to playing a fade, but this weekend it started feeling more natural and my ball striking really improved from the confidence. I just had 4 blow up holes, where I just can not commit to a target, and the penalties really added up. It gets discouraging seeing the handicap rise, but I am confident that I am really close to breaking through. Anyways, the round had a lot of positives, and really good learning moments. This week on the practice areas I am really going to work on picking a target, committing to it, and then executing the shot. Score 87 GIR 33% FIR 64% Putts 31

There is nothing in golf that is more true... And speaking of that, I will now recount my tale of disgust from the weekend... I played my usual Friday afternoon round with mi amigos. Doubled one hole with a three putt, bogeyed the last after missing a reasonably straightforward putt, for a 77. This is par 71, but it's rated 69.0/122, so it's essentially playing to my 7.x index. Afterwards, I commented how this was getting to be a recurring theme. Seven of my best eight scores in GHIN are 77 or 78. Of course, my buddies give me considerable crap for this, as buddies do, LOL. Felt like I was maybe turning a corner, if I could eliminate the whiskey tango foxtrots in my rounds, maybe I could nudge that a bit better. The golf gods were listening. Saturday and Sunday was the Member-Member two man event in the Men's Club. Saturday, I shot a scintillating 84, including a 30 degrees to the right blocked tee shot into OB Land. Sunday, I shot a crowd pleasing 89, that was adjusted to 87 for posting purposes. Yes, the golf gods hath spoken. I must now lay a burnt offering of old tees and cart path scuffed golf balls at the altar of the golf gods to seek their forgiveness... \

Overall pretty happy with todays round. Ball striking was solid; putting could have been a little better. Feel like I am making good progress with my full and short game swings. Not sure what is going on with the putting, thinking it is mental lapses regarding how to swing the putter which causes me to hit horrible putts. 39/40:79 13/14 FW 11 GIR with 3 more that were just off the green. 36 putt (4 three putts)

  12. ... I have been struggling lately and went out yesterday for a practice round at 5pm and had the course to myself. @#@#$%%^(%*& back has been a problem all year and most days I just seem to be too tight to swing with the freedom I need to play my best. I would hit a really good day and shoot a 69 but then the next day felt stiff from the get go and back to mid or even upper 70's. I talked to one of my friends I taught with years ago in Chicago and he told me he always marveled at how relaxed I was swinging the golf club and reminded me of something I told him "Your address position should be like a free throw. Active and ready ... but relaxed". (To be fair I always marveled at his swing which was shorter, compact and explosive and seemed like little could go wrong). One thing I used to tell my students that tried to muscle the ball was Nicklaus said he wanted his arms to feel like "overcooked spaghetti." So my main focus yesterday was being completely relaxed regardless of how poorly I hit the ball. ... Hit a couple of bad tee shots off the first tee and played several balls from the best with 205 to a back flag. I hit three 4 irons inside of 10 feet. It felt effortless as far as tension but I was swinging as fast as I possible could while staying relaxed. It just goes to show what I tell others all the time, when it doesn't count you can swing much freer. Obviously if I hit balls far into the desert it didn't matter because I could just drop another ball and hit again. So it was great reminder to swing like I don't care where the ball ends up. ... Rest of the practice round went very well hitting the ball both farther and straighter than I have in quite some time. By the time I got to #16 after hitting so many shots my back started to tighten up again. Hit some really bad shots on #16 and #17 so I took a little break in the shade since it as 104*, then stretched some, took some free wheeling swings and had the relaxed feel again and played #18 well. ... I am not recommending you go out and swing in a relaxed state (although it might be a good experiment) but that is a swing thought that works for me. It is like having a picture of myself in my head of Freddie and not Tiger/Rory/Thomas. When playing my best I always channeled smooth swingers like Freddie, Larry Mize and Tom Purtzer. I am looking forward to my next round to see if I can retain the relaxed feel.

    How'd you play?

Went back to NY middle of last week to play some golf at my club on Long Island. Figured since I am paying for it I may as well get a few more rounds in (up to 6 for the year). Played 9 on Thursday since the course was packed and I am impatient but was 3 under on the 9 that I played. Went out on Saturday and had it to two under through 17 and promptly doubled 18 for even par. Had a massive brain fart with a PW on 18 and blocked it high right into the pond that should never be in play then hit a terrible pitch shot to go along with a craptastic first putt. Yesterday was the annual pro member where three members play with the pro for a best two of four net round. I have to say I may have watched our pro play one of the best rounds of golf I have ever seen in person. Made 10 birds, two bogies and six pars for a round of 64. He made his two bogies on 1 and 2 then played the rest of the round in -10. I made five birds and an eagle to shoot apparently a ho hum 68. Taking a few days off this week then back to playing later in the week at my new club in VA. Oh and for fun two of the birds I made were on par 3's that I was actually giving a shot back so I made a 2 for a net 3. Our pro was allowed to play off of scratch and well he is a hell of a lot better than I am.

  14. I worked on straightening out the Radspeed driver and 3W over the weekend...this was all indoors so I'll need to test these out on the course before deeming it worthy... Driver My biggest concern about opening up the driver face to -1.5* is my launch will get too low and I'll start losing carry distance. I have the 16g weight up front and a 8g weight in the back. This is 10g more weight than the stock weights and I do feel the head better during the swing. The added weight provided a more consistent strike, however, I still saw the hard draw on almost every swing. I added 4g of lead tape to the toe and immediately started to see results. My only issue is that the tape wouldn't stick to the matte paint and would fly off at impact. The hard draws straightened out to a more playable draw but I noticed some wild swings with driver spin. Keep in mind I'm using the Left Dash Pro V1x in all of my tests. I do throw in a Bridgestone Tour BX occasionally if I think the driver head is too low spin and I need something with a little more spin to keep the ball in the air. I'll say I've never seen such wild swings in launch and spin than with this driver. It's a little frustrating and I feel like this is a complex Rubik's cube and I've only got one side complete. Open the face, launch gets too low but spin is perfect. Square the face, launch is perfect but spin is counter-productive and ball moves right. Move weight forward, spin is reduced but I'm seeing ball fly further right. Move weight back, straighter ball flight but with excess spin. I love tinkering with clubs but I'm about out of ideas. Big Tour 3W I added 4g of lead tape to the toe of the BT and it was an instant success. I averaged 23 yards right of target without the tape, and only 6 yards right of target with it in place. The Left Dash paired with the BT is giving me driver-esk launch numbers (161mph ball speed, 12* launch @ 2400rpms - 278y carry). The left dash is a little bit more active (left-right movement) off the tee than the Bridgestone but both balls performed well. Regardless, my confidence in the 3 wood greatly increased and with the carry distance I'm seeing, I see it as a great sub in case the driver isn't behaving.

I just aced the fourth hole on my course today, first one ever. I don't care if anyone says boo about it but I am pretty proud of myself. 18. ... No doubt that always helps. The crazy part is how much the body wants to protect itself. After 2 back surgeries it seems to be of the opinion golf is something I should not be doing LOL. There certainly are days it is painful, and quite a few days where it hurts a little but after pre round stretching more often that not it feels pretty decent to start out and there is no reason to be tight. Walking always helps to keep loose and relaxed but the last several months have been riding in carts because of the heat as it would be reckless to walk in 105*+ temps. The breeze in the cart and riding quickly to some shade are musts.

  19. I found by moving the weight back in my driver and lowering the loft to open the face I’ve been able to mitigate many of the over draws without sacrificing launch and spin.

    Sweetens Cove

A couples buddies and I had the opportunity to play Sweetens Cove yesterday. To echo some of the things @vandyland said, it was such an awesome experience. We played from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM. Brought some PB&Js, snickers, crackers, waters, and gatorades hit the course. We ended up playing about 54 holes with a cart. Our group played 18 holes (9 at the blue flag, then 9 at the white flag) from the tips (6600 yds) to get a feel for the course. Then we started to incorporate a lot of fun games like shamble, alternate shot, scramble, 1 club challenge, etc. in 3 hole increments. The price if you don’t know, $115 to walk, $165 with cart for all day experience. The course is so pure with 2 legit par 5s that cannot be reached from the tips in 2 unless you bomb a 300+ yard drive and then 260-270 yard approach. The 2 par 3s aren’t challenging in terms of distance, but trying to land the ball on the right tier is where it gets you. We loved the mix of or 4s. You had 2 driveable par 4s, 2 longer par 4s, and then 1 driver/wedge combo. Like @vandyland said, that was the toughest greens I’ve ever played on. Loved the challenge. Super tough to even try and chip up on if you missed the green. It was a great day, great weather, great time. Here’s some pics below. IMG_1849.MOV

  22. I've gotten out for a handful of rounds now with the Max LS/AF 505X combo at D4 and am enjoying the results. I decided to embrace the left-to-right ball flight and have started to have the confidence to aim down the left side of the fairway and let the ball fall back to the right. I know I'm giving up some distance potential by playing the fade, but my dispersion has improved a lot. More importantly I'm not double-crossing myself like I was earlier in the season when I was trying to hit draws with the Mavrik. I have the Max LS set to -1/D and the sliding weight in full draw position. As the Arccos data shows, my driver has been behaving relatively well recently in comparison to my 5 HCP baseline. Distance-wise, I am content. I still seem to have a shot or two a round that just rocket further than expected, but I know a decent strike with a comfortable swing can net me 260-270 total now. On the course I play most often that is more than enough to go driver-wedge into almost every hole.

Glad to help. I figure with a post like this, folks can pick and choose from certain people what works and doesn't. I like what @Nolan220 mentioned above about starting with older clubs to get the skills down. I'll clamp it in the vice and tape the hosel with painters tape. Then I'll take a 200 grit paper and carefully rub the paper just so the ferrule is barely proud of the hosel. Then I finish it with some acetone on a towel.

Two nine-hole rounds this weekend due to outings. Saturday - 39 (+3) - 3/8 FIR - 5/9 GIR (1 birdie) - 17 Putts (2 3-putts, 4 2-putts, 3 1-putts) Solid round overall. Driver was not spectacular though and closed out the round with three-straight bogeys. Sunday - 36 (E) - 3/8 FIR - 6/9 GIR (1 birdie) - 15 Putts (6 2-putts, 3 1-putts) Much better driving round this morning. Putter and short game were both excellent as well, which allowed me to save a couple pars. Feeling pretty good about my swing at the moment!

    Club Build & Repair

My recent bad experience with a custom club build, along with a long interest in doing so, has me thinking about setting up a club build and repair bench. The ZX5's I just received from Fairway Jockey were top shelf build quality - seriously, I mean not a blemish. My wife and I were just talking about this whole recent escapade (my pleasant way of saying it) and she asked "why I don't build my own clubs"... hmmm . For many years, I built custom fly rods for myself and others. At one point, I was going at it like a part time job. I really enjoy doing detailed work and especially crafts that involve some technical prowess. I'm not thinking about doing this for profit, but rather just to test out various clubs via buying used and re-shafting, changing specs, grips, etc. If I were to get good enough at it, perhaps offer to others at cost? Anyway, I know there are some spies that do this to varying degrees and was hoping to get some insights from you. What primary pieces of equipment are needed, which make/models are worth having (I don't want junk stuff), and about how much money should one expect to spend setting up a quality build/repair bench? I haven't started doing searches for this information and undoubtedly there is plenty out there... but when we want to good dope on a subject (not only golf related in many cases), start at MGS!

Bay Harbor round from yesterday. My dad and I did a scramble to make the round not last 6 years. The front 9, we used all of my shots… +5, parkland course The back 9, we used all but 3 of my shots, -2, faux links. Lots of 3 iron off the tee. The one time I used my 3 wood, I hit it too far, and it went into Lake Michigan… the other two were my last name… wedges again, 85° sideways, no idea what that crap was all about. Luckily those just happened to be my dads best shots of the day.

    Sub70 golf

I'm still very skeptical. I'll even say extremely skeptical. I just don't know that there is enough metal to move around in a standard wedge to make much difference on spin or forgiveness. That said, I'm willing to admit that it seems mizuno and ping do have some tech that makes a real difference in the wet so there is that. After my wedge experience this spring I'll definitely agree that bounce /grind makes a huge difference. Read below. I don't know if it is the black finish, or the bounce /sole style on the Sub70 wedges, but I don't hit them fat. And that is why I like them so much. I had some Mac daddy's 2 years ago that I hit fat all the time, got a prior Gen sub 70 wedge last spring and hit it great right from the start. After a year or use and abuse the Sub70 needed replacement. I threw the Mac daddy's back in the back for 3 rounds, and instantly started chunking all wedge shots inside 100y. I tried the Kirkland wedges because that price can't be beat, chunked them for 3 rounds and returned them. Got this set of sub 70s since I had done well with previous one. These arrived and I was able to hit the ball again. I still think if I had any wedge brand with the same bounce and sole as these I would hit them just as well... But maybe not. For whatever reason these have proven to be the best wedges for my swing I've used. I can't say why, but they are. I really like the 2 different wedges, the JB definitely opens up easier for touch shots around the green. The 286 is good for full swings and anything less. Tl:DR - best wedges ever, don't buy anything else

  32. So, only one practice round under my belt so far, and I have to say I was really really impressed with my "new" irons. As far as the Steelfiber i95s are concerned, I've picked up a solid 5 yards across the bag, and I'm really excited that during the round I felt no jarring or pain re the golfer's elbow I've been fighting, which was the reason I looked into these in the first place. I'll still need to ice and rehab the elbow, but I'm confident I can continue to play and do so comfortably without making it worse. What I'm not sure the shafts can take credit for is the much tighter dispersion I'm seeing. Long story short, I got fit for my 919 Forged irons via GolfTec 2 years ago, and the fitting put me at 1 degree up and 1/4 inch short. I went to a local and very reputable fitter this time around, and he basically said I need to go back to standard lie angles. I don't think I got a bad fitting from GolfTec, but I do work very hard via PlaneMate and dry swing drills and I think it's entirely possible I've just improved to the point that I early extend and high handle it less and no longer needed that 1 up lie angle. Point being, I've already noticed MUCH greater face control...maybe a few slight blocks (which I would expect when adjusting to a flatter lie) but no overcooked draws that had been plaguing me this year. On a side note, calling it a practice round because I was 2 over through 6, but had to skip 7 due to an idiot doing idiot things in front of us, then played the remaining 11 holes 4 over after I calmed down. Long odd story.

I'll admit I jumped in without a lot of practice and have built my last two sets of irons. I actually just finished a third set of irons, a Frankenstein'ed set of Hogan Edge CFTs with Ping AWT shafts for my brother-in-law last week. I don't have a lot of "real" equipment, but consider these to be the essentials that I do own: Golfworks Swingweight Scale (the cheapest one they have) Golfworks Vise-mounted Shaft Puller Utility Knife with Hook Blade 6" Metal Cutoff Saw (Harbor Freight) Butane Pencil Torch (Harbor Freight) DIY Club Length Ruler About $300 or so in investment. You can spend a lot more, and I've accumulated other things over the years. But you can do a lot with just the list above.

From your back ground, you'll be a good candidate as a golf equipment hobbyist. It does not take a large investment at the beginning, but, it could snow ball into something quite expensive. I believe the cost of somewhere in the neighborhood of half a dozen green fees should get you started, There are tons of DIY online, but, keep in mind, as of all the online DIY video, some are excellent and some are just not a good example. Golf forums are a great place to ask questions That's how I got started 20 years ago.

I learned with a workbench, a vice and a shaft clamp so I could do my own grips. A deep hook blade for a carpet knife prevents scratching the shaft when removing grips and a little bit of patience goes a LONG way. After I gained my confidence, I began to watch my grandfather and the club builders at the shop where I worked. I would do most of my club work at the shop where I worked and recently, inherited my grandfather's workbench. From there, building and re-shafting meant buying some additional tools. Pipe cutter (cutting steel shafts to length, propane torch, a mallet and while some use the head of a club to install a ferrule, I found a jig that gets me my preferred depth. Once you have that, be sure you have a dedicated amount of space to work...preferably immune to temperature and humidity spikes. I've built and repaired plenty in 20 years. My current work is limited to new grips for me and friends / family and re-shafting wedges from a retail shop and installing a longer wedge shaft for length. I love reading posts like this and wish you the best! It's truly worth it.

  42. Full transparency? Nothing. The main contact that set this all up is out on maternity leave and the guys backing her up haven’t been responding to the mods inquiries. We haven’t gotten any updates on the remaining clubs we’ve yet to receive, nor the bags. I get these are unprecedented times, but I’m really surprised how little Cobra seems to care about the challenge this year. The stock issues are one thing. I get that. The lack of communication is something I don’t get. And my own 2 cents, if I am an OEM putting together some sort of testing Opportunity for a website or influencer, I’d want to make sure the people reviewing my stuff received equipment that fit them (from the no up charge options available to consumers). I’d rather postpone testing altogether rather then send people ill-fitting equipment

  46. I just found this old thread from 2010. I've not heard of Mitchell equipment but it sounds like they are considered top shelf. Sounds like they occasionally have used/certified loft/lie machines available. The "True Blue" mentioned is a company called MR 3.

    Club Build & Repair

I started with some older clubs that need need a shaft repair my dad was like 100% as can do it you need epoxy to mix.. so I had him as a guide which help .. after that it was off to the races and I have reshafted multiple irons and Bc of this forum started Doug doing grips with the air gun. Also this forum helped me with questions I had with ferrules and other minor stuff. I want to get into bending lofts but that’s something that can wait would need more learning / tools for that

  49. After purchasing Monte Scheinblum's NTC video, I decided to go to the range again today and work on some of the concepts. I've been practicing around the house with a club, but there's nothing like the real thing. I can't say it was the best day I've had ball striking, but a significant swing change is going to be hard. I accepted this fact before going leaving the house and you'd be surprised at how less discouraging a plethora of topped shots can be. Here's a couple of my better shots from today, I need to work on starting my downswing with my hips and work on the flying right elbow, although I believe it's less pronounced than before. Untitled - Sequence 01 16.mp4 Untitled - Sequence 01 15.mp4 Going forward, I plan on working on shoulder and hip flexibility. Shoulders especially, since my job tends to beat them to death. It's a work in progress, but I feel it'll pay off in the long run.
