    How'd you play?

... Well I said I would have no problem with days of rain because we haven't had any in Phoenix for over 6 months and I got my wish. Rained the last 3 days and I wanted to complain on day 3 but I really couldn't even though it did cause flooding in many areas. But the good news was I got to play this afternoon and at 87* ... I got to walk!!! With temps in the 105-118* and 18-38* of humidity it was impossible to walk unless I wanted heat stroke. Feels so good to be tired after the round.

    How'd you play?

Played in a charity scramble yesterday, the first of three scrambles in 10 days. I played pretty well, but on an unfamiliar course with lots of wind, lost quite a few balls with club choices that I'd probably not choose in a normal round. We didn't come anywhere close to the top of the leaderboard, but had a bunch of fun and hit some really great shots, including a drive that ended up somewhere near 300 yards dead center fairway and drove a green over water on a short par 4. Got out for nine this morning, shooting a 42 with a triple and double. Still working on some new swing thoughts/feels, it's getting better but still hurting myself off the tee too much. But I'm hitting some very good shots, just need to string together a round without blow up holes.

    How'd you play?

I was able to get out and play 9 this past week. Was pretty happy with most elements of my game and got to try out the new to me putter (Taylormade Spider Black Tour) out after using it in a rental set and liking it. The feeling continued with the putter but you would not know it from the total putts. Had a couple lips outs and all putts were starting on intended line. Two 3 putts, but one was a 60 footer where I just missed the 7 foot comeback putt. The other was on top of a ridge about 14 feet away and even though i only breathed on it, the putt went 10 feet by the hole (still can't believe my approach stopped there). 36 (+1) 2 birdies and 3 bogeys 3/7 fairways 7/9 greens 17 putts

    How'd you play?

Shot a miserable 85... 44/41 with 2 doubles and a triple and no birdies. Just couldn't make good contact with the ball. Driver was OK, putter was fine, short game wasn't too bad, but I only had 3 putts for birdie and they were too long. I had 12 opportunities to save par from off the green and made 8 of them... one sandy par. Same time tomorrow!

  7. ... It really is one of the big fallacies concerning equipment. Told this before but when I was on staff with a Top 3 OEM my irons came in with my 8 iron 2 degrees strong and my 7 iron 1 degree weak. 1* difference between the two irons and probably would not have known if my playing partner wasn't a Mgr at Golfsmith, so he checked the loft and lies for me. That is when I decided to buy my own LL machine. It would have been pretty bad for a Staff member with a PGA Bag having trouble with gaps and thinking it was the irons, not faulty lofts then not really recommending them to students. I have never and I mean never had a set of irons come in on spec and that includes Mizuno, Titleist, Taylor Made, Cobra and Bridgestone. Mizuno had me go through a fitting with their top Midwest Rep to do a review for WRX and their website and the irons arrived off spec. Some sets have been closer than others but all of them are off spec. That is just how it is and with irons costing $1200 and up, I would definitely have any new irons checked and adjusted before playing them.

  8. Unexpected 98 today. 46/52. Working on my swing so had zero expectations of breaking 100 today. Driver was a mess although no shanks today. Lost 5 balls from driver alone. Short game and putting saved me. Bye bye SIK. Two three putts and two one putts with the TA. Irons got better once I adjusted my grip as I was leaving the face open.

I'm actually thankful that my mom smacked me whenever I misbehaved. But I don't believe it's limited to the boomers. I've taught my kids to greet wherever they go. Last week we were at the golf club and crossed paths with an older couple. My kids greeted them with a simple "good morning" and were ignored. You try explaining to a 7 and 4 y.o. why even after being polite, they didn't even get a hello back. It's a f****** crazy world we live in. I enrolled my 7 y.o. daughter in judo and jiujitsu lessons. I won't always be around when a creep shows up. My son is only 4, but he already knows to respect a girl, no touching, etc... Back to the topic, those involved should be banned for good.

... Time to repeat a story I have told before. I believe it was Bob Murphy (but could have been another Old-timer). Said he was really struggling with his swing so he took a week off and didn't touch his clubs until the Thursday of the next Tournament. He won that week. He decided to repeat the no practice before a tournament and won again two weeks in a row. He decided he would never practice again, just show up for practice rounds and play golf. ... The very next week and 10 over the cutline on Friday he said he had no idea how to even start his backswing. Everything felt off. On his way home Friday night he said he realized "the golf swing isn't something you own, you just borrow it for short periods of time". If a Pro at the top of his game can win 2 weeks in a row and have no idea how to even start his swing the next week, I think we can give our selves a break and enjoy the good days but accept the struggle on our bad days.

I was debating wether to post this or not, but golf is golf and I guess we all go through tough times. I played the absolute worst I have ever played in my life yesterday. I stopped counting and debated on throwing my clubs in the water that my ball liked so much. I was extremely frustrated and just couldnt get out of my funk. What a horrible day, lessons learned though and I will keep at it and keep trying to get better.

So after just making this drive 10 days ago, the wife and I are back on 1-80 for 15 hours heading back to Erie, PA. Her step-brother has been battling cancer for a year and he’s lost the battle…in hospice care now and hours/days left. Racing back to hopefully say goodbye before we can’t.

43/45 for 88 today 7/13 fairways 6/18 greens 35 putts driver was pretty good today playing a fade. double crossed myself once for a huge OB and had one that stayed straight down the left side of the fairway, but other than that i had the ball moving left to right pretty reliably. irons were meh. for as many chances as i had with a wedge in my hand, i should’ve been on the green a lot more. putted well, would’ve been around 31/32 putts but i burned a few edges.

Another Sunday on Cart electrical work. I received and installed the new switch - and now have power to the lights. But figured since I was going to be tearing up the dash why not go one step further and upgrade the headlights to LEDs. The current ones were so discolored you could hardly see anything at night. The LEDs are a huge upgrade from the old ones. Here's a before and after. Note tail/brake lights yet to be done. Before After

I carve wood in the off season … no pun intended. I am in my mid-60s, and the youngest in the carving club. We carve in the library of a National wood working store, so people are always walking by. It never ceases to amaze me, how guys in their 70s, 80s and 90s, will jump to attention (pun def intended) when a young woman walks in. They immediately slip into full speed flirt mode. Now this in no way compares to the lewd behavior mentioned above, but it does illustrate that no matter how old men get, they always yearn to reclaim the lost romance of their youth. And some are just ass holes.

The new spectacles came in much sooner than expected so I picked them up today. On the good side, the frames are so much lighter than my old ones, and the red racing stripe on the earpieces hopefully distracts from the thinning hairline On the bad side, only my left eye changed so everything looks lopsided to me right now. I almost fell down getting out of my chair at dinner... I'm sure by tomorrow things will be fine and my brain will have adjusted.

Ok it's a medium sized box so not endless but stick with me here. First we have..... Nice start thought about buying one of these. And next .... Oooo ahhh the platinum MSG putt out trainer. My putting practice just went to a whole new level of fancy. I mean the metal frame and rubber is really nice and let's just say heavy. Everything is looking good Thanks so much MSG this was a great prize. I would also like to thank my team, Jordan, Louis, Robert, John (yes first name basis when they win you something like this).

    New Set New State

So I moved from Detroit to South Carolina for year round golf, and no harsh winters. It’s been great. One of the first things I did when we got here in January was go get fit for new clubs. I immediately fell in love with the P790 irons! Added distance and control, and man they are cool looking. It took nearly 8 weeks to get them, but it was worth the wait! I ended up getting an Odessey O Works Marxman putter and some TaylorMade MG Wedges. I kept my TM Burner because new drivers weren’t outperforming my trusty Burner. It was quite amazing. I’ve gone every month or so to fit for driver, hoping something would change. I wanted that new driver experience!! Well it finally happened in June. The Callaway Epic Max was giving me 20-30 more yards! I decided to get it, and then something really cool happened. At checkout they tell me to pick a Callaway player to win the US Open, and if they win, I get my driver paid for. It was a simple choice there, Jon Rahm has been playing lights out. I picked Jon, and he won obviously! I just got my $586 gift card to Dicks Sporting Goods in the mail the other day. Not sure what to spend it on just yet, but I did buy a new putter cover and some Pro V1X balls! Things have been going great, and my game has never looked so good! I am playing much more, so my scores are better too. This is kind of a brag post, but my wife and I used to always say if we didn’t have bad luck, we would have no luck at all. Things have really turned around for us down here. My diagnosis of MS two years ago is finally getting treated property down here, more golf in 6 months than I had in 6 years in Detroit, and for the first time in my life, I won something! Well Jon Rahm won, I just got the benefit! If anyone is considering new irons, check out the P790-P770 sets from Taylor Made. They are fantastic! Especially the all black P790s that came out weeks after I bought mine!

  30. Thanks to @dlow206/Bort Golf I have a new 7 gram weight to try out in the Max LS/AutoFlex combo. Using this weight brings the swingweight of the driver down to D2 from D4+. I will be curious to see how this effects my ball flight and ball striking.

  34. Really nice job...You hit something SO important that I think should get some more attention... You mentioned how you didn't really think you'd like the carbon top line at address. I can't tell you (after working retail) how many golfers will choose to disregard a certain club without swinging it. There is of course, a requisite need to feel confident and like the look, but discounting a club simply without hitting it is unfortunate. I'm glad you like the first impression and with you the best of luck in the process!

Thanks for the birthday wishes guys. Got to play two rounds - one at The Oaks in Somersworth, NH that went sideways after an opening par save. The other was today at Butter Brook in Westford, MA, which is quickly becoming one of my favorites in the area. Spotty front 9 (43) and was cruising along at 1 over par on the back until finishing 17 and 18 with a DB and a bogey. So much for birthday karma!

  37. It is easily remedied... but you'd hope that if you're having a set custom built to your specs for maximum performance that they'd come in the way you ordered them. Definitely not as bad as the shaft situation with jlukes, but still... if you order it a certain way, you'd hope they'd come in that way.

No... Women should not have to dress a certain way to accommodate men. If Uncle Roger can't coexist with a young or older female wearing yoga pants and a cute top, then Uncle Roger should stay home.

  39. I think me and the 5-iron are gonna get along great off the tee! The irons overall will take a bit of getting used to, but initial impressions are promising. The real star of the day though was the Snakebite wedges. I only used the 58* once (had a 70 yard shot that needed to get way up over a tree), but I used the 52* 12 times in this morning’s round, and every single time it put the ball on the green, with an average distance to the pin of 24 feet (including an up-and-down from 85 yards to save par) I had a lot of shots that I’d like to have back, but managed to card just 1 double-bogey on my way to an 83!

Sorry that your children have to learn the experience of not trusting anyone by their appearance nor by their position..... However, a great time for opportunity education. What others do have little bearing on what we should do. A little cheering and positive attitude could be contagious. I'm glade that you have put your children through disciplinary training through martial arts, it's benefit is to teach the children discipline through exercise. Not the fighting scene from the movies. I had also put my children through the discipline , not to "buy" the color of the belts but the regular training for their body and spirits. Of course, by looking back to human history ( by the way, history is more fascinating than any other publishing if you can find a period which you want to learn more), we are certainly not lack of the kind who are not conforming to keep the harmony in society. The age of a person has nothing to do with behavior, some of us won't/refused to learn through time and experience. We are more pronged by conditioning from our time period, if we put a white shirt in a bucket of re dye , it'll come out red. Look around us, what we promote now will shape our children and eventually, our society. The media has the major roll of influencing how we think and behave.

    How'd you play?

Poorly... I played poorly lol. Played a new course yesterday and thought I'd have a great time based on my warmup at the driving range and an easy par on the first hole. Unfortunately, things went sideways rather quickly and I somehow managed to accumulate 18 strokes in PENALTIES for a grand total of 99 for the round. It seems every time I think the driver is under control (or close to it) I experience a round like I did yesterday. The three rounds played immediately prior went 85, 86, 86. The most sickening part of it is that I know exactly what's happening and just can't seem to get it straight on the course. On the bright side, I had my best putting performance since parting ways with my Scotty Cameron last fall - 29 putts total w/ two 3-putts on the card. Looks like I'll be spending some more time on the range really trying to dial in my swing changes so I don't have to think about it so much on the course. Hopefully then, I'll be able to keep the ball in play.

  49. I have been a relatively low ball flight player for a number of years, so I know what you are going through. However, I would suggest that you determine why your ball flight is low. It may be your club specs or your swing. If it's your swing, changing shafts may not help much. Low bend point shafts add more spin to the ball which is why the will launch a little higher. What you want is a club that launches higher with moderate to low spin... unless your swing speed doesn't keep the ball in the air. I had always teed the ball up fairly high because I was told to swing up for more distance. I had an AoA of +5-6º. However, I wasn't hitting the center of the club face... I was catching the ball on the bottom half. That was one reason for low flight. Another reason was my weight shift during my swing; I slid side to side and didn't rotate well. All of this combined with my low club speed means short carry distance; not bad on our firm fairways but not optimal elsewhere. I made a swing change and I am driving the ball higher; certainly not as high as high speed players, but I do get more distance. Before chasing down the shaft rabbit hole, you might want to have your local pro evaluate your swing first.

My son Grant played in his first junior golf event yesterday. I was a little disappointed in that they didn't keep score or treat it like a real tournament even though it was advertised as such. (I can't complain too much...I wasn't charged anything to enter him.) That said, Grant struck the ball really solidly...I was impressed with the distance he got on several drives. His putting needs some work, very wristy, but there will be time to get technical later. His interests are all over the place and has spent much more time playing baseball this year than golf, but at this age (7) I'm going to let him do everything and anything...be an athlete, specialize later. All the baseball definitely has helped him build up some speed and rotational power for sure.
