    How'd you play?

... With Over Seeding started in Phoenix I played a new course today. One of the "inferior" muni's open til Oct 10th. I normally don't keep score playing a course for the first time unless it is a quality track. I think I had 3 birdies and 2 bogies and 1 "other". ... I often wonder how players have doubles and triples without an OB off the tee or hitting in the water and I was reminded how to do it today. I was having my best driving day in quite awhile and hit a big drive through a fairway not knowing it takes a sharp turn near the hole. I was faced with a 70yd shot over a towering tree sitting on the edge of a big pond. The play was a 60yd shot back over the pond and away from the hole, leaving about a 90-100 yd wedge. Since I wasn't keeping score and knew a perfect slightly open LW would probably get me over the tree and I thought WTF, lets see what happens? I just caught the top of the tree and it dropped straight down in the rough and I would have had to stand in the water just to chip it out. I took a drop in deep rough and gouged it out on the green 40 feet from the hole with a severely breaking putt at the bottom of a tier. Got it to 4 feet and missed the putt for a triple. Ahhhhh that's how it's done. ... Knowing the hole I would not hit driver the next time and would take the lake and tree out of play ... but that said had I played away from the hole and back into the fairway I would have had a decent chance at par because I would never have flown over the tier. Worst case scenario was a bogie and I can live with that after a mistake off the tee. I go back to the Annika rule and if I am not absolutely sure I can hit the shot 80% of the time, I am not going to attempt it.

  3. Putting. I was absolutely expecting my Phantom X 11.5 to join the hall of fame of failed putter experiments...plot twist, it didn't. The fail has always been a struggle with distance control and speed. For some strange reason, this one hits all the marks for me...it still hits all the marks. I've had it in the bag all summer and I still love it the same as I did the first round we played. Whether it's the simple aesthetic, the grip or the bend frankly, I could care less because it works. Today was a trip to the course to just work on a variety of distances. It's prime fall weather up here and it's also my favorite time of the year to play. Putting was always my least favorite to practice and as I get older, I enjoy it more and more. Hopefully it translates to the course.

  4. Wedge fitting today went well. I'll be keeping my Vokey's, but reshafting them with i110 Aerotech Steelfibers. I'm gaming i95s in my irons all the way through my set gap wedge, but while my distance gaps were good my set gap was actually spinning slightly more than my 54 Wokey. Once I tried out the i110, problem solved. From there, I mentioned concerns over my 3 wood to hybrid gapping, and one thing led to another, and a Callaway Apex Pro 3 hybrid is on it's way. I like my TaylorMade DHYs, but I'm hitting my 3 wood 250-255 and my DHY 3 hybrid (19 degree) 225...too big a gap. The Apex Pro 3, despite being a 20 degree, was consistently 235 for me. Now the question will be if I keep the DHY 4 in the bag, or eventually opt for a 22 degree Apex Pro. I'd like to stand pat, but ho's gonna be ho's. Oh, and this was ready for me... @PMookiehelped me get some Honma adapter sleeves, and my TR20 driver has officially been upgraded. Saw a consistent 8-12 yard distance pickup, and much better dispersion. Can't wait to get it on the course...

That was me when I started... self taught and late in life... at age 45. I struggled for several years shooting around 100. Then I wised up; had some lessons, went to a golf clinic, and got to a 14 handicap. I probably wasted my best years of a golf swing, when I should have started with the lessons rather than thinking I could pick up the game easy enough. Those are the years I wish I had back. When you consider the cost of lessons compared to golf equipment prices, lessons are the best investment an aspiring golfer can make. Lessons shave strokes quickly and reduce aggravation. I finally got my swing in order to keep the ball in play, so then I practiced short game... a lot! Lessons here also helped immensely!! That and a fitted putter got me down to an 8 handicap about the time I joined MGS 9 years ago. Now my handicap is trending up, mostly due to age. Age has slowed my swing speed, but it also has taken its toll on my ability to spend 4-5 days a week chipping, pitching and putting.

*Every* day is National Dog Day around here! I probably spend more time on these two happy, loving beasts than I do on golf .. but I would not have it any other way. Scout (Black Lab) on the left and Jax (Flat-Coated Retriever) on the right. This pic is the screensaver on my phone...

  8. There are many factors that could an be issue besides just the shaft. For any of us to recommend a shaft based on your post would be the equivalent to closing our eyes and throwing a dart at a wall and see where it lands. And yes, I would look to the shaft as a possible contributor to poor performance, but I would also make sure to check lie angles, length and swing weights. There are many KBS shaft models, but I'll pick the KBS Tour as it's probably the most likely to be in a club and if it was a specific model other than that I would assume you'd list it. That shaft in S flex is a 120g shaft and you say they worked well for you. Then you went to a 105g shaft and are struggling. The fix you propose is to go even lighter to a 95g shaft? That logic doesn't make sense to me. I would highly, HIGHLY recommend going in for a fitting with your new irons. Since they are still a current model most places should still have fitting carts. At a minimum this should allow you to hit several different shafts with the heads and see actual data to find if a shaft change will help them work better for you. Best of luck with your irons, but please don't randomly spend money on new shafts plus the work to install them and just hope they will be better. Spend that money on a fitting and get it sorted once and for all and then enjoy your new sticks!

  9. As the season winds down for many in colder areas and we start to get jealous of all those who are able to golf year round I wanted to ask and hear some stories about what everyones highlights were for the season? This of course can range from watching the tour, playing or your own game highlights, MGS highlights from testing to simply joining the site and anything else for this golfing season! For me the breakdown of highlights is pretty easy... my golf season this year on a playing side was low which was expected, but I made up for it by watching more golf then I have ever in my life before. I had a great run at the MGS Fantasy Golf League with a 2nd place regular season finish and a top 10 finish after the playoffs. This for me was a huge highlight as it gave me the chance get to know some of you through trade talks and the weekly highlights posts. Of course the other big MGS highlight was becoming a mod, which has been a great privilege and again another great way to get to know a lot of you more and to contribute to the site which has already given me so much. So in short MGS has definitely been my golfing highlight and all that surrounds MGS. I have got a new net for training and practice and my folks brought my backup set form Canada so all my clubs are now here in Switzerland. It has been a unusual golf season for me, but still one I really enjoyed and looking forward to welcoming a new member to the family in February who will hopefully take a liking to golf like I have.

  10. You've gotten some really good advice already, but this is also something I struggle with. For me, what feels like 50/50 isn't 50/50 and more like 40/60 to my backside. It could be the angle, but it almost looks like you have something similar going on at address: Echoing what @RickyBobby_PR mentioned, I find too much weight back causes "false turn" and then I get stuck back there with no option but to chunk it/scoop and early extend to get the club through. One thing that is helpful for me is to feel a little bit more of my front hip bumping toward the target at address. That sets my weight forward a bit more and really helps with the scooped wedges. Chris Ryan's 60/60/100 drill might also be a good feeling to practice with for a bit, even if only on partial wedge swings.

Very good approach! I posted something similar about "new par" challenge for high handicappers a few years ago, but I am also too lazy to look for it. It's out there if people want to search. I would add one thing. If you are trying to break 100 for the first time, play from the most forward tee... doesn't matter how far you hit the ball. Don't let your ego get in the way of learning the process of lower scores. When you break 100, then you can move back a tee and repeat. However, you will learn to score more quickly and have more fun if you stay at the forward tee until you break 90.

    Finally broke 70!

So, I have been playing on and off for 39 years. I have been capable of shooting in the 70s for probably 36 of them. I used to be a terrible putter, had a terrible temper, and really struggled to shoot below 75. About 15 years ago, I decided to get my short game better and get my temper under control. I finally broke par for the first time in 2009 (39-32-71). Now, at age 50, I regularly shoot under 75. My quest for the last year plus has been to finally break 70. I have had a 70, numerous 71s, 72s, and 73s. Everyone I played with was shocked I had never broken 70. I have had all the pieces physically, but for whatever reason, I just couldn't get over the hump (mentally). I just couldn't put it all together. Until....today. I finally did it. I easily could have shot 67, as I lipped out short putts on 9 and 10. Recently, I had several rounds where I was rolling along through 11 or 12 holes and then would fall apart. I bobbled today on 13 and 14, but kept going. I hit one fat out of a fairway bunker on 14, then knocked it 6 inches away for par from 50 yards. I think I knew then, it might be the day. I actually missed a 15 footer for birdie on 18 just right for 68. Best thing was, it was in a friendly money game and I finished T2 (paid top 2 spots), and won a skin. So stoked!

  16. That is a very good point with distance control. I had a lot of difficulty hitting half shots ect with any scoring clubs because come to think of it, I don’t hit too many touch shots with a 6 iron (how long the OL was compared to my current irons). I agree with the shorter clubs as you get to scoring clubs, might have to Frankenstein this set to try and accomplish this.

  21. I’ve been doing this for more than 12 years. Here is thread I began in 2012 on this site. That’s when I got the book that called it “Instinct Putting”. When I’m “feeling it” I sink an uncanny amount of putts. I really need to revisit this and haven’t looked at the podcast that started this thread. The bottom line is I started this because I was sick of 3 & 4 putting. I began to aim at the high side of the hole and focus solely on the speed. The goal was to have a tap in for a 2 putt. Suddenly, I began to sink putts from everywhere. I still look at the hole, tend to make a lot of long putts and rarely 3 putt. However, I still have bad days, like during the club championship last month where I had 2 chip-ins and 3 chips to within a foot, and still had 34 putts on the other 13 holes and probably the worst putting day in 15 years. I also have began this with chipping. Mainly I do this with a 9 iron, pace off the distance from the flag and pick a spot 1/3 the way there. Say 21 paces and pace back 7 to my landing spot, and read it like a putt. Then make a practice stoke with the 9 iron looking at the ground, step in and look at the spot I want to land on. I missed the green on 9 last Wednesday, and had 21 paces landed 7 Percy on my spot and sank it for a birdie. Hit it in the same place on Thursday but had 18 paces so landed at the 6 pace mark and made it again. But sadly no others on the weekend. But I look at the hole EVERY PUTT. The side benefit is I no longer even think about my stroke. Just focus on the target. I don’t think about the grip, the stroke, and have noticed that I may use interlocking grip, 10 fingers, overlapping, of even split hands grip. I just do what ever feels right and focus on the speed. Which is what I failed to do on the 34 putts in 13 holes. The next day I had 26 putts on 18 holes, which is more typical, but it didn’t matter for The Championship. I had already played my way out of that tournament.

    Sub70 golf

My first experience in fitting clubs with Sub 70 was the set of 699 Pro irons that I built for the captain of my travel team. He's a 5-handicap at our home course, and plays lots of competitive golf -- when I fit him for these irons in late 2020, he was playing to a USGA Index of 9.0, and lately he has shot a lot of rounds in the 70s, with an average differential of just under 5 (in my experience, it is extremely rare to see someone take 4 strokes off of their handicap in a little less than a year). I already had a good first impression of Sub 70 Golf from a couple of other stock Sub 70 purchases that I had made prior to that fitting experience late last year, but Jason and his staff went far "above and beyond" on this occasion. I had cancer surgery at the end of November, 2020 at just about the time that I was about to order the clubheads, etc. for those Sub 70 irons based on the fitting that I had done using four different 699 and 699 Pro iron head models. Unfortunately, I developed a really nasty infection following that surgery and ended up back in the hospital in December, and then again for almost the entire month of January. I contacted Jason Hiland in December from my hospital bed after my wife got the fitting results to me, and we shifted gears, having Sub 70 build the 699 Pro irons to the spec's that were derived from my fitting before going into the hospital. The irons were then shipped to my house and my customer/team captain, who is also a USGA Course Rater, was able to pick up the irons prior to leaving on a 5-day course rating trip to Puerto Rico and another trip to the San Diego area, where his "duties" (it was a USGA trip) included playing Torrey Pines. After I got out of the hospital, and back on my feet this Spring, I met-up with this customer/friend and did a "gapping review", plus checked all of the specs on his irons. The build that was done at Sub 70 was pretty much dead-on, and all that I had to do was to tweak the lofts a little bit to get the lofts exactly where they needed to be to achieve the exact yardage gaps that he wanted between each club. Sub 70 hadn't done anything wrong, we just wanted the long/mid iron gaps to be adjusted a bit. Kudos to Jason and his staff for working with me while I was in the hospital (and after) on this order. The result of this experience is that I have fit a couple other customers into full-custom Sub 70 clubs (that I built), and I have purchased three Sub 70 clubs for myself. If I didn't have a nearly-new set of 2021 model custom irons in my bag from an OEM manufacturer that I represent (I'm a Professional Clubfitter, and a Fitter/Dealer for a few golf equipment companies), I have no doubt that I would already be playing Sub 70 irons. I'm sure that there will be some more Sub 70 clubs (driver?, fairway(s), irons) in my bag before too long!

  26. Yup. The wedges are absolutely phenomenal. The star of the show in my eyes only because they can truly go toe to toe white any other wedge out there, and in some cases, have more bounce/grind options then the competitors outside of Vokey

  27. Not to be ignored, it offered a nice insight into those wedges, which are IMO grossly underrated. The entire line is frankly, one of the better top to bottom offerings in golf. Nice work everyone, I enjoyed following along.

  29. I went to the range today to work on the points from the lesson I got while playing at @Tom the Golf Nut's course. The main things are getting the shaft more upright at the top of the swing, Martin Chuck also talks about this in his Planemate videos, and feeling my left shoulder rotate on the downswing to promote better weight shift. That's how I think about it, the instructor tried to have me come off my right foot on the follow through but I'm not that coordinated. Another thing I realized in the car after finishing was I completely forgot to try to pull the club through impact instead of push. Tom told me the left side should be more sore than the right shirt l after playing and I always feel it in my right bicep after playing or practice. I wasn't hitting as good as during the lesson, but I'm seeing improvement. I was thinning and fatting a bit, but I don't expect miracles after one week of practice swings. My irons were better than normal, my fairway woods were a mix of tops and majestic bombs (for me), and the few drivers I hit were money. I'm also working on trying to stay within my limits on my backswing. One of the things Tom noticed was my hands separating on the downswing and after watching the video he sent me I noticed my right arm on the downswing was getting parallel to the ground. Old habits die hard, but this one's going down.

  30. ... I have tried to stay out of this thread but I feel Yellow Ball is misleading MGS members like Walter Mitty. Every night I put yellow balls on top of my lost/found stash and every morning when I check on them, I find them hiding on the bottom of the box. I am certainly open to an explanation but "I am afraid" we already know the answer.

  31. Mark me down as a full believer here. Larry D was kind enough to let me pair his SF 505 with my SIM 2 max head as a loaner for a couple of weeks. I’ve been good with that driver with the Ventus blue in it. Now it explodes off the face - higher launch, longer carry but very flat landing. The ball stays in the air forever and it’s very easy to hit. Normal flight is an explosive baby draw. I found a used one online that’s got a TMag adapter and the same length - Happy birthday to me is all I can say. It plays at 45” BTW. That seems to be my sweet spot. I can’t see myself changing out any other equipment so this is around what I would typically spend on stuff in a season anyway - $600? For ten yards and and additional fairway hit per round? My index is 6.0 today. Let’s see where I’m at 6 months from now.

  33. Ultimately it was a frustrating weekend of golf (albeit very fun and pretty). I make a lot of mistakes on the course, that cost me a lot of strokes. The complete lack of a short game this weekend was a bit of a shocker. My wedge game is usually one of my stronger areas of play. I'll hit the practice area and try to tighten that up. I've been trying to keep my hands outside a bit more on my backswing and I've fallen into a big lateral sway. Then I'm not getting back to square. On the weekend, I missed 7 tee shots left and 5 right. The approach shots were mostly pushes and generally missed right. It's clearly just time for a lesson. I need an objective eye on things. It's hard to play golf when you don't know where the ball is going.

    Vintage Putter Advice

If you like this style, another option is the Otey Crissman putters with the wood shafts. Very vintage looking - much older looking than 1970's - LOL! I bought a new one in the mid 70s and carried it for over 30 years. Mine has a head that looks very similar to the putter in your photo. I'm out of town so I can't send you a pic, but I see them for sale on ebay. Edit: Almost forgot. Adding to the vintage look of the Crissman is the original leather wrap grips if you can find one that is still in good shape.

    How'd you play?

So, played what might have been my last two rounds of the season on Saturday, both at the home course. First round was awful, an 88. I chipped like a baboon who was given a golf club and told to figure it out. Lost a total of 4.5 strokes to my short game against a 5 handicap and left me with doubts of even coming out for the second round where a friend from law school said he and two of his friends were coming to my course to play. I joined them as a fourth. Second round of the day, 80. Beat everyone, gained shots on short game, barely at .7. Golf is stupid and weird and that's why we love it. Couple of personal thoughts on the round. I think I went too large on putter grip with the Mid Slim SS since I was missing a lot of putts on the right side, not letting the toe rotate as needed, think I needed just a bigger pistol so that change is going to happen. Also went away from heads up putting after two three putts to start the morning round, just not working for me right now. Might focus more in the winter on it. Lastly, shot of the day, maybe the shot of my season was in the first round. 17th hole, 203 yard par 3, hit hybrid to 8 inches to a blind pin. An awesome feeling to get up there and see it that tight.

  41. Are you ready? It's time for the.... Unofficial Condensed Cobra Connect Fan Challenge This will be a 2-part combined net score challenge. I'll get to all the rules in a bit, but first of all, let's talk about what you're all really here for. The prizes! Similar to past Cobra Connect events, there is no guarantee that you'll win a prize, but the better you do in the challenge the better your odds. The main prize is a Just Bomb It driver cover from Crown Golf! Everyone who beats me has a chance at winning it. But since that's such a difficult thing to do, if you don't beat me but you're in the top 5 you still have a chance! If you don't manage either of those feats, you still have a chance at the random draw prize for all contestants - the matching ball marker. If you follow me on Instagram you get a free bonus entry. Plus there's one last chance to win a prize with the side challenge. In honor of my 190+ yard 7-iron during my demo (seriously, the Radspeed irons are ridiculous), the side challenge will be to see who can hit the longest 7-iron (either off the tee or on an approach) in a round during the challenge. In recognition of that extra scoop of ball speed, the prize will be the Two Screams ball marker. Since I can already hear the old guy who still plays his MacGregor blades from the 80s taking a break from yelling at the kids on his lawn and complaining about jacked lofts, here's the more specific rules about the 7-iron: There are none! I don't care if you take your 7-iron, bend it 10 degrees strong, stick a long-drive shaft on it, and tee the ball up 3 inches in the air. As long as it's a conforming club and it has a 7 stamped on the sole, it's a 7-iron for the purposes of this challenge. And if you do go the franken-club route, I want to see pictures! Now it's time for the main challenge details. I said that this would be a 2-part challenge, but fortunately for those of you with real jobs who can't just go play golf every day, each part of the challenge is only 9 holes. That means you could theoretically complete the entire challenge in a single round of golf, and then get back to filling out those TPS reports on time. The first 9-hole challenge is that old Bryson classic, the Bomb and Gouge. You can only use Driver, fairway woods, hybrids, and wedges. And yes, that includes the wedges that came with your iron set. Unless you play Honmas and instead have a 10 and 11 iron, in which case tough cookies. You should have known this would happen when you bought them. You can take as many attempts at this as you want, and just submit your best 9. Want to play a full 18 like this and see if the front or back 9 is better? Do it! Want to sneak onto the golf course at night after it's closed and play the back 9 on repeat until 3 am? Go for it! (For legal reasons that was a joke) However, this isn't Winged Foot - you won't win here just because you can drive the ball 380 yards (I'm looking at you, @Chip Strokes). You'll also need some of that 2016-Rickie-esque Iron Mojo. That's right, for the second 9 holes of this challenge, you can only use your irons. I'll even allow driving irons, because it would be too cruel to force @jlukes to play with just his irons. And your set wedges to boot, since they were a part of your iron orders. (Yes, I'm only making that rule because I have 2 set wedges. If you don't like the rules, send all your hatemail to @Thin2win) Again, you can have multiple attempts. I'm not going to be the one to point out that your relationship is suffering because you spend 53 hours a week at the golf course - it's up to you to decide if a $2700/month alimony payment is worth it for a new driver headcover (and of course the glory that comes with winning the challenge). Once you have your best 9 holes from each part of the challenge, post them up in this thread! Make sure that your post includes the following information: Your handicap Your Bomb and Gouge score Your Iron Mojo score The par, slope and course rating of the course where you achieved your scores (if your 9-hole scores came from 2 different courses, submit the average. If you can't figure out how to calculate an average, I don't think I can trust you to count high enough to submit an accurate score) Your longest 7-iron shot, with a picture of your shot-tracking GPS as evidence (the GolfShot app is free and has this capability if you don't have something you're already using) You have until midnight PST on October 18 to submit your scores. My fellow Cobra Connect competitors are welcome (some might say required) to submit scores, but they are ineligible to win prizes. You just got $2400 in free golf clubs, quit your whining! Oh, and one last thing. Since this isn't an official MGS competition, MGS staff and forum mods are welcome to participate as well! And if Adam Beach has a problem with that, he can take me out to dinner and thank me for all the nice publicity I'm generating for him. Good luck everyone!
