  1. As nearly all of you know we have had some changes to the forum this year and it has had its ups and downs, however I am happy with the progress we have made so far... key being so far. First I want to start of by saying I know the changes haven't been accepted by all, but I continue to get PM's and the like about the site and how we can adapt and improve it these messages are important and always taken into consideration. Before going any further I expect conversation in this thread to be productive. I am more then willing to listen to suggestions as well provide feedback as to why things are what they are, however if this just turns into constant complaining then well.... lets just hope it doesn't come to that. We all want to see the site grow and do well so lets keep comments in a productive manner. Also we know about ads... there have been a lot of discussion on it already and we have sent messages out to the powers to be and hopefully at somepoint we will have a permanent fix for that. Headed into the off season we will continue to take a look at everything and how to improve on what has been implemented and what is dated and should be improved on. Keep in mind the Forum is always evolving, we have had several features come and go and the site continues to grow. A few more things to keep in mind before you comment - You can always PM me privately to discuss a specific topic. Trust me you would not be the first nor the last and again I am happy to discuss a situation or topic that may be on your mind. - The testing section will continue to be worked on. We recognize it isn't perfect and want to continue to improve with it. That being said I know it is signifcantly better then when first launched and based on traffic reviews are getting a lot more attention. - Added to the testing section we will be revising and adapting some of the procedural processes to steam line the reviews on the frontend and backend. This includes some work on the templates for reviews and more. Part of this will be to keep things a bit more consistent across all reviews. Including the new star rating system which is there. - We have had a big change over this year with the mods (myself being new included) and there was a pretty steep learning curve to start off. Added in this with a near record number of tests so far and Covid delays/issues it has been a trying season to say the least. We are very appreciative of all the testers and feel for all those who have had to wait or are still waiting for their equipment to come to test. Okay I think that is all for the moment. I will be trying to respond to as much of these as quickly as possible and watching/reading all the comments, but feel free to tag me in it so I get to notification if its overly important that you feel it needs to be read. Last last point, please please fill out the poll as it helps us get an idea for use within the forum and we may send out a survey later on via email for everyone to fill out, but this is the start for now.

    Got Problems?

My Mum's husband looks to have had a small stroke and is in hospital. Mum's beside herself because Sydney is still on lock down until Monday, so she can't go anywhere, even the hospital and it's her birthday.

  3. @GolfSpy_APH, good update/thread. A few recommendations: Provide next steps after you and the other mods have had a chance to digest the feedback. As to site improvements, I would recommend that polls have a close date and disappear after that date. The current poll; scotty vs ping gold vault has been up for several weeks and maybe even months. This makes the site look a bit stale. Lastly the push emails 'Forum Digest' provide little to no value to me, not sure about anyone else. Thanks again for the ongoing communication!

  4. PLAYOFFS This was mentioned in the early season discussions but I wanted to put this out there as definitive since I finally got around to putting together the bracket. Top 16 in each division will play in the playoffs..top 4 in each receive a first round bye. We'll be following this manual (outside of Fantrax) bracket: And to the money aspect, here's what the final payouts will look like: Total Money Collected: $580 Less Fantrax Fee: $580 Fantrax waived fee for this season only. We kept the $10 entry because 1)we had already collected from a number of players 2)bigger payouts this year without the fee eating it up and 3)we'll have to pay next year anyway so may as well get used to it. Miss Playoffs or get eliminated in the first round: $0 As voted on by the league Make it to Round 2, Semifinals: Refund $10 entry fee First round byes automatically qualify for this as a minimum Finish 4th in the Super Bowl: $100 Finish 3rd in the Super Bowl: $150 Finish 2nd in the Super Bowl: $200 Win Super Bowl: $10 entry + MGS Golden Ticket + FF Champ Badge Golden Ticket is a free selection into any of the Official MGS Tests for 2022 Champ can defer prize to 2nd place (or further) in lieu of $$ payout IF the recipient accepts the trade Worth playing for? Good Luck!

  5. Titleist irons were a little different because Titleist needed everything asap to get the irons to the testers for launch. So that was a bit of abnormal circumstances. This is how it works in general: Test is Announced published (usually a Thursday/Friday) and left open for roughly 1 week. Test closes and we have our "short list" made for selection within a day or so of Sign Up Closure. Mods provide feedback on short list over the next few days and after agreement we announce. - Depending on the test short lists are easier or harder to do and certain requirements have to be met from the OEM. So from Signup Closure to Announce is usually 4-6 days or about 2 weeks from when the test is first posted. As you all know we have jobs and real life outside of MGS so sometimes schedules can be a bit harder to coordinate as we need at least 3 of us to agree on all the selected testers to ensure we are not playing any bias or missing out on any good candidates that would be good for selection. Following that a PM is sent to all the testers asking them to accept the test and get any info we need to send off for them to get the product... if fittings are involved this takes a bit more time.

  6. Thanks for the hard work @GolfSpy_APH and mods! Some growing pains, sure... but I think you guys have us headed in a good direction. And I agree with @bens197 it does seem like we've got a good amount of new members going the party, which is great news! As long as they aren't Bills fans like he is.

  7. I understand and appreciate what you guys are trying to do. My biggest complaint is that the testing forum was not tested/debugged nearly enough before going live and there wasn't near enough education for the members. I don't have the stats you guys have, but I would suggest there was a huge decrease in engagement. I was part of the Callaway Epic test - there are three pages of comments. The most recent analogous test under the old system would be the TSi drivers last year with 44 (!!!!) pages of comments. If the new method was intended to drive engagement, it failed miserably (nevermind the wonky behavior that continues). I'll leave the ads and the brutal effect on user experience alone, as you guys are at least trying to address it. My preference is to view from the main page, but have been forced to use recent content on my phone because of the terrible user experience. I shouldn't have to change my preferred method.

    Got Problems?

Definitely not good. One of our Friday Bacon Boyz players was diagnosed with “white matter disease” yesterday. This isn’t good he really only 80 and takes care of himself. I was in his 4some Monday and I told the group that something was really wrong with him. We had a talk with him and he went to the ER.

  9. It's always easier to have too much data than not enough. As others have said, it's just a matter of how you want to apply it to your game. For lessons, I love having Trackman data available to me especially when I'm indoors. When I try something new, I see if numbers move on the screen. Immensely better feedback than someone saying, "That's better!" Obviously, outdoors ball flight helps a bit. On the range, I enjoy having my Mevo+ out about once every five sessions to make sure what I'm doing in the gym is resulting in progress. Club/ball speed mostly. On course, it's fun having Arccos to measure shots. No more guessing based on stakes or yardage markers. Also, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, it's much easier to score Internet points with a screenshot of a 300-yard bomb than a story about one. . Realistically, I like being able to look back at rounds and reminisce about good shots and what could/should have been. The strokes gained feature is nice, but not something I look at a lot. To each their own, of course.

  10. had a lesson tonight tonight. spent most of the time working on my 80-100 yard wedge shot. my coach suggested i play that shot with a higher lofted club and use a full swing instead of a partial wedge. he also thinks my wedges are too uptight and recommended bending them 2* flat we worked on keeping the weight a little forward, and a low, outside takeaway with the hands. it wasn’t perfect, but by the end, everything felt pretty good and the chunks were gone. finished up with some drivers. we played with tee height, stance, and ball position to try and bring my ball flight down. i definitely ended on a high note

  11. Went to the course after work to work on my shortgame. Hit a couple of hundred chips and pitches of various distances and it went really well. Only had a few shots that weren't center face and solid contact. I am hoping they are wrong about this weekends weather as I am eager to get out to the course since I haven't played in 3 weeks.

  12. Has the game of golf become too data driven? When does a good thing begin to become a bad thing - at least at the amateur level? This comment was made by someone writing into the most recent MGS Podcast mailbag and it got me to thinking more about it. I love some of the analytics about the game but at the same time, starting to grow weary of the seemingly never ending analytics about the game. I spent a long career in aerospace engineering and management and love me a good data set and analytics as much as the next guy or gal... but, at least for me, it's beginning to overshadow the pure enjoyment of the game. Since joining MGS in 2018 and immersing myself back into the game, I've done the fitting thing (thrice now), seen all my data, and acquired what should be optimal equipment. I've poured over the Ball Lab test reports and tried (unsuccessfully) to find any that really stand out. I no longer use my Shotscope V2 RFID tags. I did for a period of time and the data was interesting... but not that interesting. Frankly, I just don't want to sit and look at graphs, SGI's, and scatter charts about my game. Yes, I do want to improve but, like so many things, one needs to find balance. Recently, I've decided to let the pure joy of playing once again become my focus. Play more instinctual and less mechanized. If the decision costs me a couple of index points, so be it. So where are you in this new modern, analytic saturated world of golf?

  13. ... I was reading about the Top 50 LPGA Pro's and what shafts are in their irons since their swings are more comparable to ours than PGA Pro's. Most are using Steelfiber shafts and more i80's than any other. Nelly Korda #1 in the world plays i80's in her irons and i95's in her wedges. Lots of Nippon 950GH shafts as well. No Fuji, Recoil or any other graphite iron shaft I saw. Jess Korda was the only Dynamic Gold player and Lexi plays Project X but several other big hitters are playing Steelfibers. Interesting stuff.

  14. Hey guys, I’m working on my review and hoping to at least getting some content out there to y’all soon! The weather hasn’t cooperated very well lately as you’ll see below. I have unfortunately still not received my 3 and 5 wood. Hopefully they come in before the cold weather hits here and makes it tough to get more rounds in. Alabama has been hit with a couple crazy rain storms this year and this last week might have been the worst for my area. My home course got hit pretty bad with flooding issues. See pictures below. It’s going to be closed for at least 3 weeks. I’ll still get some rounds in from other courses around the area.

    MGS Forum Content Poll

This past year and correct me if I am wrong but there seems to have been an influx but also a retention of new members. That was nice to see...clearly this community is doing something right. I don't have any constructive feedback, it's a pleasure to browse and participate with all of you.

  16. I think it depends on how the player responds to the data and if they find the data beneficial. When I was taking lessons launch and ball conditions were used as checks and to show what was happening. I've tried the course data analytics and I think what you track is dependent on player ability. During my rounds I make so many swing mistakes I am not looking at strokes gained numbers because the bad shots are obviously where my issues lie. I don't need something like arccos. In my mind the biggest benefit to all this data is the strategy and expectation management aspects.

  17. Well, we don't know what we don't know, so technically everything has always been there and, it would stand to reason, more is heading our way . It just seems to me the analytics aspect of the game has really become so dominant in recent years. You're absolutely correct that one can choose to partake or not. For me a little goes a long way. To some extent, I'm wondering whether I've focused too much on the data and at the expense of letting the game come to me? I'm just curious what others feel and think about it.

  18. With my season nearing its end, I've updated the main post with my final thoughts on the AutoFlex and also have posted them below. Final Review: Dumina AutoFlex SF505X Driver Shaft - Oct. 8, 2021 I've had the pleasure of playing the AutoFlex 505X for the majority of the season. Currently, I have about 25 rounds on its final configuration (more on that later). I still would not classify driver as the most reliable part of my game, but there is something special about this pink and black shaft. Looks - 4/5 Stars The pink/black combo isn't going to be mistaken for any other shaft. I assume most love it or hate it. If I'm being nit picky the font selection is not my favorite. The serif lettering of SF505 screams "Times New Roman." If I wanted to drop some (more) cash, a custom blacked out or pink/black driver head would look nice with the shaft. Feel - 5/5 Stars As advertised, the AutoFlex feels very whippy everywhere but on the downswing. After months of swinging it, going back to any other driver shaft is an odd feeling. I let my brother-in-law try it a few weeks ago at the range. He handed it back to me after one swing. Despite the feel, I've had no issue determining where the ball is striking the club face. Keeping with the whip analogy, there seems to be a very linear release of energy through the ball with no defined bend point. Basic Characteristics - 5/5 Stars I've mentioned the most obvious characteristic of the AutoFlex already - it's very light and whippy feeling at address. So much so that the shaft almost feels brittle. I've had no issues with durability so far. Trajectory - The AutoFlex produces a towering trajectory on my best swings. Good shots are a slight draw or fade depending on the day. I am playing my Callaway Epic Max LS head at 8 degrees and have no issues launching the ball. Accuracy - Arccos shows I have retained about the same accuracy throughout the season with and without the AutoFlex. On good swings the AutoFlex is extremely accurate. On less than ideal swings it seems to help limit damage. Worries about the flexibility of the shaft and its effects on accuracy are unfounded. Distance - The AutoFlex is an absolute bomber when paired up with the correct head. My Arccos Smart Distance has increased to 288 yards recently. I also hit a career best 320-yard drive this season with a little wind help with the 505X in the bag. Getting the correct fit is important. I started my adventure by pairing the AutoFlex with a standard Callaway Mavrik head. I did not have great success, and I was considering selling the AutoFlex midway through the season. Only after purchasing a Callaway Max LS head, and subsequently removing five grams of weight from the head, did I start to reap the benefits of the AutoFlex. This combination produces high, tight baby push draws when I'm swinging my best. On-Course Performance - 5/5 Stars Rather than repeat myself, the short summary of the AutoFlex's on-course performance is that I maintained roughly the same level of control, added 20-plus yards to my Arccos Smart Distance and hit more 300-plus yard drives in the past two months than I had in the previous two seasons of playing. My home course is generously listed at about 6,200 yards from the back tees. I usually hit driver on 10 holes. Since switching to the AutoFlex, I have partial wedges into most of the par 4s, and I reached the shortest par 5 this season going driver/8-iron. When I'm playing well I scare par. That is a huge improvement from last season when my best days sniffed 80. Miscellaneous - 1/5 Stars "Cody, how could you rate everything else so well and this category so poorly?" Don't be dumb like me. Please don't buy this shaft without swinging it first or getting a proper fitting. If that's not a possibility (which is probably the case), please prepare to tinker with different weights and heads. This turns an already expensive experiment into something even more expensive. In my case, I tried two different weights in the Mavrik head before giving up. A used Epic Max LS set me back another $400 mid-season. I still needed to drop the weight some more to get everything working for my swing. I have over $1,000 invested in this shaft/head combination. Writing the last sentence makes me a little sick to my stomach. Play it or Trade it? - 5/5 Stars I found the holy grail combo for my swing and don't plan on tinkering with this particular setup anytime soon. At this point, continued practice will do me more good than trying to chase down another driver combination. Conclusion The mystical AutoFlex seemed to make a big difference in my game this season. Is it worth $800? I still don't know. But what I do know is that it's working for me right now, and I have no plans to make any changes in driver for quite some time. Final Score - 4/5 Stars

  20. So here's where I'm at because I'm liking going away from my PING Irons soon and with it, going away from Arccos as a service. I do think that Arccos has helped me identify things that have improved my game. Without Arccos I never would have realized my putting had got to the state it had and allowed me to go spend on a putter built specifically for me and now, showing me that I need an iron change to re-engage me mentally over shots. I was never using it to chase goals or anything else, I was using it to give me some feedback that I couldn't quantify. But the problem is when you chase things in that space it can come at a holistic change to your game. I honestly believe just going ahead to a rangefinder to get yardages is going to help me more than getting the full suite of information. That's more my speed right now I think because I can get paralyzed by data.

  21. driver is still at 6* we changed a few things to get me delivering the club better. stance is open to get my hips out of the way and promote a fade, which is my preferred ball flight ball is teed lower - top of the ball just about even with the crown of the driver because i don’t need any help getting the ball in the air ball is a touch further forward in my stance to make sure my AoA is positive to prevent gear effect. i’m still not making perfect contact, but at the beginning of the session i was seeing balls spin at 4300+ and balloon out to 240/250

  22. It depends on where you're at in your game and what you're trying to accomplish. In my case, data is important because it helps me with both improvement strategies, such as swing speed as well as club selection. In the case of the former, if I see my driver distance is beginning to trail off - well that leads to a swing speed improvement plan. As the the latter, after logging 30 rounds on my SS V3, and looking at the Performance Average data, I found that I'm hitting my 22^ hybrid as long (if not longer) than my 5 wood. An immediate fix was to take the 5 wood out of the bag. A longer fix is either lessons or picking a better 5 wood. So at least for now, I'll be using my SS V3 to better tell me where I need improvement. However, as a disclaimer I don't use the SG nor am I interested in the 'compete' functionality as neither one provide any benefit for me. . i

  23. Golf's ultimate selfie? Yes, those have become increasingly popular... except you don't see many from us old, slow guys . Totally agree on the real time LM data feedback when trying new clubs, shafts, etc., and for range sessions. I was speaking more to the data from rounds and the mountains of data from pro level play.

  26. I love a saying I read a few years ago that's always stuck with me... "In its haphazard nature, science often produces progress in advance of understanding." Meaning...the data we have is helpful but it's only helpful when people understand what it means. Golf technology is awesome and has the best of intentions...finding the proper audience will be the most difficult challenge.

  27. Great topic. I hope it doesn’t get to a point like baseball where the data drives everything. It leans that way with Bryson but there are examples of countless others that are complete opposite of him. Unlike baseball where every team is data driven at this point. For me I love arccos, less for the day to day data (helps with reviews for sure) but I prefer it strictly for the hole to hole and shot to shot. I am super visual and the arccos aerial helps me so much. I don’t think golf as a whole will become overkill on data. It’s easy enough watching the sport on tv to ignore those, and for me personally as a golfer I personally do not need it to enjoy playing.

  28. I really like the Fuji pro iron shafts. Harry and Phillip at MGS headquarters have them in their irons so,I have had an opportunity to give them a go. Tried a bunch of the graphite shafted irons they got in for testing and the Fuji was one of the best.

  29. Yesterday, I doubled down on my Fuji Pro iron shaft testing by ordering a 95i Tour Spec in stiff. I'll plug it in to one of the other heads in the set I'm using for testing; another clubhead has a 115i Tour Spec stiff. We'll have a shaft weightathon. Also scored another three GripMaster Roo grips, and a light blue leather putter grip for my lovely spouse (so I can reclaim the lime green leather on the putter she's been using). My wife is a fan of blue and teal in nearly everything.

  30. I won't disagree there were several bugs within the new system and as we fixed one more were found out. Included in the previous forum testing update thread I discussed a LOT of those things there. Whether it was timing of it rolling out or whatever I hope we don't ever run into any of those situations again. For what it is worth there was a test site created, however none of the bugs were present there. Added to that it was the forum testing update thread that lead to a lot of the changes which have now been implemented and were suggested by the community. These being the tab format - Members didn't want to see the pick me pick me comments hence why we added the Comments and Pre Testing comments. @greggarner the "Leave Feedback" is only available for testers. Anyone commenting on the thread will have to do so under the regular comments as they do not have access to the review tab. This is exactly like the old placeholder posts just in a newish area... rather then being at the top/beginning of the thread its under its own tab. I thought I had mentioned this a few times before in previous threads, but I'll have to try and make it more clear for the future. We also manually change all the titles for the testing threads as to show when they have signup available, closed, testers announced, in progress and upon completion we send out an announcement to get more eyes on it. Part of the issue with fewer pages on the first few reviews on the system was they were not in recent content and unless they were followed it was less then ideal for users to find. Again this was something we worked on and moved as well as renamed as per the memberships request to make it more user friendly. Since then we have been able to get more eyes on them and had a better system for getting the tests more views and gain more traction within the forum. As we work on some newer changes/optimization we will continue to update the thread (in posts much like these and the previous one I did) to educated and inform the members of whats going on and be there to answer questions that may arise.

  31. I’m all for the constant attempts to improve, and as long as we’re all open to feedback (and everyone clearly is here) then keep it coming. I am curious, and forgive me if this is the wrong thread to ask, but what are the drivers that impact the lead time before closing a testing opportunity for sign-ups and actually selecting and announcing testers? I’m sure the number of applicants impacts things, but I also noticed the Titleist iron testers were announced in a day (I think) while other opportunities seem to take longer than others. This is NOT a complaint by any stretch, I’m just genuinely curious as to what the drivers or factors are that impact that lead time, and I’m wondering if you wouldn’t mind giving a little peak behind the curtain regarding that. Thanks!

  34. I'm not data weary, but I believe people of my skill level need to be careful. We are so inconsistent, we can't look at what happens in a single round or a few rounds - we have to focus on the longer-term trends. I know I need to reduce penalties off the tee and I know I need to hit more greens. To me, the best part is having good data on actual distances without having to spend a ton of time on a simulator I don't have easy access to. When I got Arccos a couple years ago, I gave my ShotScope V2 to a friend. He only used it a couple months and stopped because he became too focused on the data. He now has new irons with Arccos grips and hasn't even taken the stickers off.

  35. Not getting data weary, but getting weary of having to constantly make corrections in Arrcos after a round to get the data. Seeing data is good, having to work too hard to see the data makes it tedious.

  39. The joy of this game is that you can play it any way you want. If you want the data it is there for you to use. If you don't want to look at it, you simply don't have to. One thing that gets missed in the "modern game", "data revolution" thing is that the info was always there, we just didn't have the knowledge to apply numbers to it. I am sure Hogan would have loved all the data. Snead maybe not. But it has always been there.

    How'd you play?

Played in the annual “Play for Pink” tournament that supports DCH Hospital’s Brest cancer foundation at Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa today. Really fun scrabble tournament for a great cause at a really fun course. They are a customer of mine so work payed for my team. Shot -16 under on the day, highlighted by a wedge from about 60 yards that was 3 inches from going in and a 25 foot putt for birdie on the fringe that I sank first up to putt. We all contributed about evenly shots wise so that is always fun.

  44. I’ll dig in a little deeper here; what you listed here are the “old school” metrics or data that golfers collected. You say you need to hit more fairways. While we want to hit all fairways, what is a reasonable expectation? Why do you need to hit more fairways? Does just counting fairways hit really tell you if you have a problem off the tee? Maybe you need to look at GIR to correlate fairways and greens hit. But do you keep metics that indicate if you were in the fairway when you hit it miss or if you had to punch out because you hit a really bad tee shot. What is a good number of GIR? Do you account for different green sizes? You may have better hole proximity on smaller missed greens than larger hit greens. What clubs or distances do you hit and miss greens? why are you missing greens in the first place. Are you good at hitting greens from 100-129 but terrible everywhere else? Moving on to putting, what is a good putting number? If you average 50’ from the hole is 2 putting bad? Can you expect to make more 50’ foot putts? Carrying this thought further, how do you measure improvement over time? How do you know which has the biggest impact to score? Not trying to say you measurements are wrong but tryin* to understand how you assess that limited set of data to get better.

  45. What's the purpose of the All/None choice in the poll? All selects all options; None doesn't select anything. Can't submit the poll with None selected... a choice must be made. If more than one selection is appropriate, then the option should be "Select all that apply"

  46. fill a 5 gallon bucket with rice and sit it next to your favorite tv watching seat start from the top and work your hand to the bottom by twisting it around, then work it back to the top by opening and closing your hand. i used to do that when i was playing ball. it makes your hands, wrists, and forearms extremely strong.

Learning a hard lesson about when DIY should be left to professionals. It isn't difficult, but it is time consuming, dirty, and taking place in a very unfriendly environment (I'm not a huge fan of tight spaces). The pluses are that I don't think I'm going to have near the issue with some phobias anymore, I'm having fun, and I always think its great to know what tradesman have to go through to build houses I design. That being said, I also could have have learned this by hanging out at a job site and watching professionals do this -- and it still would have been fun.
