    Happy thread

I just got the word...I've been selected for promotion to Colonel! This was a career goal when I started out in the Air Force 20+ years ago; pretty emotional moment for me. That said, not sure what it says about me that my almost immediate reaction was "I wonder what golf-related thing I should I get as a promotion gift to self..." Thoughts drift to Stack System...

  2. My work isn't running production this week in my shift, so I took off Thursday and Friday. Well, I found out yesterday that we're going to get rain until Sunday and I decided to leave early today so I could get a round in. I'm not going to say I shot well, because I didn't. At least it was a beautiful day on the course. It was 54 degrees at 11:30 when I teed off and warmed up nicely as the day went on. The worst part of that was I think everybody and their brother decided it was also a good day to play, so it was slow. Shot 54/59 for a 113 with 34 putts. My driver was meh along with most of my irons and wedges over 50 yards. I started out the day with a horrible case of the shanks that got in my head. The star of the day was my fairway woods. I hit several shots that were some of the best I've seen in a long time. I did have a couple of stinkers sprinkled in, but for the most part they were solid. My ball striking wasn't the best and I had a few mistakes that cost me a LOT of strokes. I had a lost ball and a 7 on a par 3, two wayward drives on a par 4 for a 10, and just fell apart on another par 4 for a 9. It wasn't all bad, I'm starting to see some flashes of what my swing change is going to do for me. I've just got to work on it more and really get the feel for all the changes. I'm also going to say the Odyssey White Hot OG 2 Ball Putter in testing is a real treat. I'm averaging 1.7 putts a hole over the 27 holes I've played with it so far. I went into better detail over in the testing thread.

    How'd you play?

Shot ok, buttttt, 33 puts wit 2, yes I said 2!, … 3 putts!! gahhhhhh…. But,one was on the first hole to a tough pin, after a decent storm yesterday, and the other was like a 50 footer, and I lipped out, but 2! Omg. It was like hearing Adele fart for the first time…

We had a tee time late in the morning, but noticed some more rain moving in shortly afterwards. I checked and there were some cancelations and we got out at 9:20. A little breezy and we didn't get wet until hole #16. Second round in a row for the Mizunos and I'm starting to love them. They send the ball right where I want... most of the time! Still working on getting the correct distance, and the wind didn't help! My driver was working much better today than on Sunday. Shot 42 (+5) on the front nine with a stoopid double on the par 3 #8 hole. My 4i sent the ball off the back of the green; combination of poor chip and poor green reading and... "put me down for a 5." I had a couple of bogeys starting the back nine, but my shot of the day was driving the green on the par 4 #14 hole. A little tailwind helped, clearing the bunker and rolling to 7 feet... drained it! Parred the rest of the holes, including a 18-footer that barely fell in on #18 in the rain. Shot 35 (Even) for a round of 77.

    How'd you play?

Got the son to come out with me this morning and play the back nine at River Heights. It was cold but sunny so it wasn't too bad. I started out strongish and fell apart on the last few holes. Couldn't putt to save my life; missed everything outside of two feet. We had differing rounds but both finished with a 53. I had 22 putts. Playing in the cold, with really wet grass, meant that balls weren't traveling very far which we didn't adapt to very well. I also learned (the hard way) that my shoes are not water-proof. I didn't think about that when I bought them earlier this year but its definitely something I'll keep in mind when I buy my next pair!

  6. It is my understanding that you would need MYSLOPE and a launch monitor. You get your data from your launch monitor and enter your data. The MYSLOPE app then gathers all the known weather information about the shot your face on the course and computes what club you should hit based on your launch parameters and launch parameters capture from other people’s sessions on trackman. I don’t see anyhthing about the R1 capturing the data about your performance. I think what it does is very educational as it helps a player understand how to make appropriate club adjustments based weather conditions.

To Fit or Not to Fit

I know the feeling about playing off non-flat surfaces. My course was flat until it was rebuilt 25 years ago. The architect built lots of mounds, and I swear there isn't a flat spot on the fairways!! I struggled with that (still do), but remember the swing is the same... your setup is different (club selection may be different too!!). If you can stripe 'em on the range, you should have no problem at a fitting. Fitters see all kinds of swings and know to expect some bad results. Your good swings and bad swings are produced from the same swing; they don't need every swing to be perfect... just a few, so don't wear yourself out hitting more balls than necessary. I agree with @GolfSpy_APH... do separate fitting for irons and woods. It's quite tiring IMHO.

Finally was able to play the Rawls Course at Texas Tech. Lets just say its a great course and by far the WINDY AF course I have ever played. That back 9 the wind was steady at 20mph, making those 14-18 very long. Greens were very undulating and if you was on the wrong side of the slope, good luck making it in 2 putts. But you can make birdies, if you are in the correct side, greens are faster than they appear, struggle with them in the front 9 but figured them out by the back 9

  11. In recent news, the parent company of Bushnell bought Foresight. The co-branded launch monitor (GC3/Launch Pro) is obviously the first fruit of this partnership. But it's not hard to see further opportunity there. The most recent Precision Pro rangefinder allows you to input your LM parameters for each club, so that the rangefinder can suggest a club. I have to think that some future Bushnell product would do this automatically, given the relationship between the companies. So that got me thinking: what other golf companies, if they worked together, could produce a dream product? Here's mine: I want one of the major stat tracker products (Arccos, Shot Scope) to partner with one of the consumer-grade LMs (SkyTrak, Mevo/Mevo+, Rapsodo). Imagine this: you collect stats for several rounds, and then your LM creates a custom practice plan for you based on your actual strokes gained weaknesses on the course. To be sure, this wouldn't be the same as having a swing coach to fix the problem, but it would have you focus on the correct places for your swing practice. What collaborations do you think would produce some really effective golf products?

I find that having a single pair of shoes is difficult for keeping feet dry. If your shoes aren't waterproof, your feet will get wet on rainy days. If your shoes are waterproof, your feet will get wet (from sweat) on hot and sunny days.

  14. @MaxEntropy Yes, of course. So the difference between between the two is basically price. GC3 msrp is $7000, Bushnell is $3000, but $800/yr to unlock it. So after 5 years the GC3 ends up costing less. I plan on keeping this until holographic virtual 3D golf takes over so that made this the better option on price. But, there is also the availability issue. Both sold out in 6 hours at launch. But my wife found a Foresight rep on Facebook(literally the first time I haven't thought of Facebook as the downfall of humanity). I reached out to him and yeah, it seems the brass at foresight didn't expect people to want to buy the GC3 as a standalone unit, they thought they would mostly sell them as SIM-IN-A-BOX packages. As such, most of their units were bundled in these packages. If you go to Foresight 's website right now, a banner will pop up telling you that you can still order the GC3, but only through that package (which is like 15k!) He also relayed that the next shipment could be a ways out (global shipping etc). But hopefully arriving been late Nov and mid February... As I wanted something to use this winter when the snow started falling this sounded bad. But there was a secret menu item I could order and likely get it shipped within a week. Foresight had pre bundled some GC3 units with a premium course pack: Carnoustie Pebble Beach Golf Links Pitch N Putt Real Club Valderrama Spyglass Hill Golf Course St. Andrews Castle Golf Course St. Andrews Jubilee St. Andrews New St. Andrews Old The Links at Spanish Bay This option wasn't listed on the website, it cost $1000 more, but if I wanted it, it would ship within a few days. So that's what I did, and sure enough 4 business days later it shipped. So, if you want one of these premium course edition ones, pm me and I'll relay his info (don't feel posting it is right). The premium courses normally cost $750/ea if you buy and download individually, so the bundle was a no brainer. Tl:Dr long term cost to own /Availability = GC3

  15. Well, here's the first dip into the pool. Reshafting a wedge to match the rest of my irons. Trimmed, dry fit, spine marked, and swing weighted with lead tape so I know what tip weight I need to beg from Roger Dunn tomorrow. Ready for epoxy after I get the tip weight. It's even the proper length. Also the spine finding was wildly easy with the McGolf bearing tool. I didn't expect it to be that apparent so quickly.

  16. OK, I'll bite. You're dumb and cheap! Seriously though, I'm pretty sure you play your driver and 3W very well, or you wouldn't still have 23-year old clubs. But a lot of tech has come and gone in 23 years. Have you tried any new clubs recently? Compared them to your 975's? If not, you might be surprised. Have you taken any lessons since you have been back playing or had a swing evaluation from a pro? If you have been playing most of this year and playing 36 holes a day, your swing probably isn't going to change much until you either get lessons or put a lot of time in getting your swing to be more efficient. It could be that properly fit clubs would help make it easier. An FYI... most everyone here has had "bad swing days" and it's very common to have "a tale of two nines" type of day; myself included!! You can read about many of them in the How'd you play? thread. What I'm getting at is that if we all waited to get fit until we are hitting the ball better, many of us would never get fit. Life is too short to think "Well maybe next year." I'm 74 and and got a new knee at age 67... should have done it sooner. It only took a few months to play better than i did before surgery, because I wasn't playing well for several years with the sore knee. I've been taking lessons and trying to improve my game through better technique and gain some of the distance I lost. It's an uphill battle, but that's why I love golf; there is always something to improve. I say... get fit! If you make significant improvements in the future, then you have earned another fitting, and we can read all about it in the What have you bought lately thread?

    How'd you play?

We finally got some rain this weekend!! Rained hard Saturday night and was still raining 2 hours before our tee time. I looked at my wife and said: "Do you really want to play in this?" It's a desert; it doesn't rain for long!! She said: "It's not raining THAT hard"... so we went!?! Got to the course, put the cover on the cart, headed to the range, although no one was there, and we could have just headed to the tee. Rain stopped. Sun came out a little, and I took off 2 of my 4 layers of clothes at the turn. I have been hitting my Mizuno MP20 HMB irons pretty well at home, so thought I would take them out for a spin on the course. It's really tough when you don't really know how far each iron goes, but based on the lofts I used two more clubs than my usual Bridgestones. Not a bad guess. I birdied hole #1; first time all year!! Managed a 39 (+2) on the front nine and 41 (+6) on the back nine, which I started bogey, double on #10-11. I was happy with an 80 though. Every shot I hit with the HMBs was solid, except for one on #18. I was hitting a 6i to a layup position and I just didn't commit to the swing; slight block to the right, but I was still in the fairway. I loved the ball flight!! I think I will stick with them for awhile. My issue all day was my long game. Driver was just OK, shorter than usual; and my woods were very inconsistent and also shorter than usual. I think my sore right shoulder is affecting those shot more than the short clubs. May need to take a break for awhile.

  21. Have had two practice sessions over the last two days and wanted to show off a nice feature of the Blast Motion Sensor, the graphs over the entire practice session. Still working on consistency but at least I have a two way miss with the putter now, haha. The first graphs show the face angle at impact (above the line represents open face and below the line is closed face): And tempo (ideal tempo is 2:1):

  24. Same here, I have not been able to play as much as I wanted, but the two rounds I played since September have been good putting ones, in the previous one the putting was great, this last one on Sunday when we played a two man scramble, we also were playing on aerated greens and for the first few holes I was having a hard time leaving it short, mostly because of drag from the sand, but after 4 holes and my feel for speeds had been adjusted I rolled the ball well. I am still playing with it, until the putts stop falling. This were my putts from last solo round I had, the 152 and 102 first putts were from me choosing to putt from the collar across the green rather than try and chip it. With the putter on the bag for the past few rounds Last year that 3 putt percentage was above 30% and the 1 putts were below 5%.

  25. Only have a couple nine hole rounds since September but still liking this. So much so I’m trying to sell my mallet and make this a primary. Still may test a LAB at some point but otherwise for the money, this putter is money. Been doing lots of carpet rolling at home and 8 ft in I’m doing well. Some right pushes from time to time but that’s on me, not the putter. Seriously, my puttout pressure trainer is wearing out.

  26. Your swing isn’t changing. Your compensations for it do. If you aren’t going to get lessons then your swing is your swing. Like @Kenny Bsaid it’s not going to change otherwise so whatever your swing is now get fit. A good fitter is going to be able to look at your your swing, your ball flight (some will use a launch monitor and some may only refer to it to confirm what their eyes show them). They will also get your input on what your miss is, what your typical shot and ball flight is. They will get your input on how the clubs they are giving you to try in the fitting feel…be honest with all feedback. They will use all of this to get you in club that will work with your swing on your good shots and will reduce the affect of your bad ones.

To Fit or Not to Fit

Looks like I didn’t change my club profile I bought standard woods in May, because I knew modern tech would help me. I’m playing TSi3 1-3-5w & 2-3h. And yes I hit the driver 40yds further than my 27yr old driver. I kno fitting will help. I like y’all’s answers … yes I am cheap, but my wife would disagree. She gives me hell over each new golf purchase. Maybe I’m not cheap, but just afraid of my wife. I like the idea of fitting in steps. So I realize that I asked the question wrong … the issue for me is, why get fit while my swing is changing. I’m a certified instructor with mental swing issues. I am a range player right now. I kno it’s a flat surface … my course is hilly, but I can stripe them on the range, pitch perfectly, putt well, until I get on the course and then I fall apart. So if I can get out of my head, I will get better. Duh. Just had a revelation … … if I’m good at the range, I should be good at a fitting. Dummy. Thanks for your time y’all. You have helped me.

  38. I'm hip deep into realizing that I've opened another obsession. The more I learn about the technical side of clubs the more interested I become. Also the further I get into it the more I realize dipping my toes is not my way and I want to do it properly. I think I'm in trouble. Here's an account of what has gone on since I posted the question last Thursday: -- Fortunately, I have many of the tools on the list short of a torch and I'm using a heat gun for now instead. -- Matching wedge shaft to my irons ordered. -- GolfWorks value SW scale ordered -- Shaft counterweight added to bring the SW of my 3W out of crazy territory (D9 -- I put a cut down driver shaft on it) -- Various building supplies ordered (Epoxy, hosel brush, ferrules, shafting beads) -- DIY club length scale built with scrap plywood and a bench ruler I already had. Verified an calibrated using my recently rebuilt irons that I have all the specs on. -- DIY spining tool (your method) parts ordered. -- DIY plywood loft lie gauge build in progress -- Oh, and in the meantime I spent a a large amount of the weekend "cleaning up the garage" -- Pulling heads off old clubs I had in the closet, weighing the components, and just seeing where various combos would land swing weight wise using online component calculators. My wife has been rolling her eyes at me about just dipping my toes in all week. I am holding off bending tools... for now. Also, thanks for having such a great Youtube channel. You have basically been my primary teacher.

  39. Part two : ball data Yep, it gives it. What do any of you want to see here? I think we are all probably familiar with foresight software, so I don't want to rehash that. I haven't found a way yet to change which of the data points it shows on just the lcd screen. Having it hooked up to my computer I don't look at the screen that often. But I did hit a few shots before getting it hooked up and just looking at the lcd. Spin Axis was a hard data point for me to put into useful terms. I got that left axis meant the ball would move left, but how far left? Maybe more time with a PLM and I'll know how much curve axis equates to, but for just our of the box.... Eh. It's crazy fast, data is displayed before I even look back down to it, so compared to skytrak, well, about 3 seconds faster. The unit isnt small, but it is definitely compact and very movable. Its hitting area is pretty decent sized and it is easy enough to get a ball into position, I didn't have any issues there. It would be nice if I could show you the gaping feature and how it highlighted the gaps in my bag that should be addressed. But I haven't tried that yet. Seriously, this thing came with Pebble Beach, you think I was going to spend the first hour on the range working on my distances?! I can say that Pebble on a Sim is still fun. And that the GC3 hasn't missed any of my shots yet. Also, it hasn't shown me a ball flight that I have been suspect of. Plenty of ball flights I didn't like, but you know, golf. Next up is club head data. And whatever anyone here asks to see Any feature or option anyone wants me to try?

    CG2 WITB-Final Setup

I’ve been meaning to do a WITB this year, but by the time I got around to taking pics, some new boxes showed up..and well you know But after a lot of trial and and actually not much error I have arrived at the setup that will take me through the rest of the year. Driver: Titleist TSi1 9.0 Aldila Ascent 40g R FW: Titleist TSi2 16.5 GD IZ6 60 G Hybrid Titleist TSi1 20 & 23 Aldila 80G Iron 2021 Titleist T300 5-P MCA Red 65g R Wedge: Vokey SM8 50.10F 54.12D 58.12D Putter: Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport 2 35” Yep, I know what they say about having an all 1 OEM bag. That you are hurting yourself somewhere if you do. Well that may ultimately be true. But I also feel If you are confident and like what’s in your bag, that is just as Important and possibly more so than any technical difference. So this is what I’m rolling with. One substitution that could be made. I have a U505 coming that could replace the 16.5 Fairway wood.

To Fit or Not to Fit

Just got back from a PT screening. I knew I had leg strength & balance issues from a TPI screening, just didn’t kno how bad it was. As you age most people develop balance issues. And on hilly surfaces, balance it a big factor. I went to PT because I’m feeling C-spine weakness developing and wanted to nip it in the bud … but then they found major range of motion issues in feet & legs. I’m visiting my son in GA next week, and the local repair shop does driver fittings for $75. I’m gonna do it at least see what shaft differences there are. Can’t afford a new driver with the other clubs I want, but I might be able to afford a new shaft.

  43. I agree with the above comments - except for the PGA athleticism. I've never been to a PGA tournament and seen them up close so can't comment. We regularly go to LPGA tournaments like the Marathon Classic and this year were fortunate to get to the Solheim Cup. I'm amazed how well they hit the ball for their physical shape - which speaks to their skills - Nelly is a prime example. Also they seem to be a bit more thoughtful in club selection off the tee compared to what I see on TV for PGA events where the guys always seem to pull out a driver to bomb it. We were on the first tee at the Solheim and saw some ladies using a driver, others using woods, hybrids or irons. When it comes to the Networks like GC, they do seem to get second fiddle. As @2puttbogey said I'd much rather watch them then KF or Champions events. p.s. The BMW Championship is on this weekend.
