    Your best 3-wood tips!

I don’t know what hitting fairways regularly means but don’t expect to hit any more than with any other club. Most people don’t hit anymore fairways with 3 wood than they do with driver. simple answer is practice. Experiment with what works and doesn’t work.

    How'd you play?

Well, I went out and played in the wind today. I wasn't going to play, but my wife wanted one more round before her surgery. She played really well yesterday on the front nine and tanked on the back nine, so she wanted to try again one more time. We tied on the front nine 43 (+6). I played from the Blue tees because we had a walking single with us and he was playing there. I started bogey then 3 pars, and then I hit the bogey train for 5 in a row!! I got up and down for pars on #10 and #11, then nearly aced the par 3 #12... a 4i into the wind stopped an inch short! Arrrgh!! The rest of the back nine was 4 pars and 2 bogeys for a 36(+1). I'll take a 79; I just played like I was in Scotland!. The wind wasn't bad until halfway through the back nine when the forecasted 25+ mph wind with 45 gusts came up all of a sudden. My 77 yesterday was from the White tees, and this 79 from the Blue tees somehow seemed easier. Go figure! My wife was disappointed; she finished with a 45 that included 3 doubles for a round of 88. She is so close to putting a good round together to break 80. It will happen. She should be back playing again in a few weeks.

Monday morning Exec with 46* and 9 mph wind, for Florida not very good. We did 5 holes then one of the older guys (81) wasn’t feeling good so we bailed. He is fresh off a procedure so we didn’t want to chance it. For the 5 holes I was even Par with a Birdie & Bogie. Everything felt good, well actually I couldn’t feel anything in my hands! Same weather predicted for tomorrow morning…swell.

    How'd you play?

Went out last Friday in the rain to play Three Rivers in Kelso with my visiting brother. We pretty much had the course to ourselves. Light to heavy rain non-stop until somewhere around the 15th. Temperature was around 60 degrees, so it was "only" wet, as opposed to cold and wet. Shot 98. I suppose the conditions maybe played a role, but I'm not comfortable blaming the rampant slicing into trouble off the tee and a few thin and fat iron shots on the weather. On the bright side, my newly bagged Axis1 Umbra, along with a switch to a claw-style grip, felt really nice this first time out. Good direction control. Pretty good distance control, too, but frankly, slow/wet greens aren't a good test for that. Even so, though, my only 3-putt on the day was from ~40 feet on #17. First course impressions for this putter were good. We'll see how it holds up when I go out again this coming Saturday (should be dry). All things considered, despite the slicing and near constant rain, we had a great time. We knew it would be wet, so it just sorta became part of the experience.

  8. The All-Fit adapter system is real. Consists of two components: Shaft Adapter goes on the shaft OEM specific collar (need one per head that you have or at least one per brand). Notice the teeth on both sides Collar goes on like this (its not epoxied or stuck on in anyway, its the teeth that hold it in place when you combine it with the last step) Interlock the other side of the adapter with the teeth with the teeth on the head and the screw in like any other adapter to the head

So uhh it's taken me two months to look into and read thru this thread .. but this forum is one of the very few places I would read about this subject online .. the posts above are, of course, all considerate and worth reading. I very well remember exactly where I was that morning, and the next, and also still remember very clearly many images from that day and the next ..... I remember some sad stories and some strange, disturbing stories that came out over the next few days and weeks but i also remember many let's call them relatively "happy" stories of people who might have been in one of the towers but arrived downtown after 9am ..... Like others mentioned it's also hard for me to wrap my head around TWENTY years .. and also wonder about everyone that age and younger and what is/will be their connection to that event as, well, history ..... (..but otoh and musing aloud I guess it's relative as I think about my knowledge regarding the history of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.) Anyway I was way waaaay over enlistment age at that time but it did make me re-think a decision I'd made about 20 years prior to that day ..... So on this day each year I have my own little way of commemorating and remembering .. and hope to continue it for as long as I am able ..... Ok enough sharing .. thank you to all everywhere who have chosen to protect, save and defend!!!

  11. I've been wanting a set of the Apex 21 irons all season. Recently saw a demo set at PGA Tour Superstore here in town. I watched them for awhile, then decided to see what I could do. First I checked trade values at Golf Galaxy and Callaway Pre-owned. CPO had the best offer. I met a friend who works at the PGATS and asked if they'd match Callaways priced - PGA's online prices were terrible. He said sure. I had them set the clubs aside because I wanted to pay cash (what the wife don't know, won't hurt me.)When I got there, they were offering a 50% bonus on top of 2nd Swing's prices. I though I was going to get $382.50 for my items. I ended up getting $533.00! Plus the price they were asking for the Apex 21s was only $899.99 for 5 - PW, AW, in excellent condition. I couldn't get that at CPO. These guys really stepped up. If you need money for equipment give them a look. I also picked up a Callaway Epic Flash 3W with Tensei Blue shaft from CPO. They rated it as average; it was more like VG to Excellent. So, I'm ready for next season, because this one is OVER.

  12. How are you not hitting it well? Pulling, slicing, topping, or ??? Do you want it primarily for tee shots? As we have heard through many threads, 3 woods can be a challenge for many players. Having moved from a Callaway WB to my current G400 was a game changer. I am way more consistent with the G400 and find it reliable off the tee and turf. I believe most of that has to due with the lower face profile and larger, flatter sole. PING's fairway woods are kind of like a "super hybrid"... if that makes sense? I stumbled into the G series after watching a Canadian playing partner a few years back hit a G30 with perfection. He had me try it and it was a perfect match. I opted for the G400 just to get newer tech and chose the SFT for slice protection. It is a nominal 16 degree which, while not the longest 3w out there, strikes a good balance of ball height to carry. If you want the 3w primarily for tee shots, I'd look at some of the super 3's having a deeper face and larger volume head - the Callaway Mavrik among a handful of them. Ultimately, you will be best served to go try some out at a DSG's, Golf Galaxy, etc. Good luck.

  13. Loft up the F9, and practice with it. Too many people go bash drivers at the range but never work on their fairways. Get comfortable with it, figure out ball position, etc.
    3 points
  14. Get rid of the 3w and get a 4 or 5w. More loft is easier to hit, generally produces better launch conditions and the same or better distance along with consistency than a 3w. second option is to be like Stenson and keep the 3w that works best for you on the bag for as long as possible

I'm picking up my GLE Coupe Hybrid next week... so excited! And while installing the wallbox in my garage, the guy told me it was just a few bucks more for a wallbox with 2 chargers, so why not? So what do I do after having 2 chargers? That's right, I'm selling my Mazda CX-5 and getting an Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback. This one will be used mainly to go to work, so just charging every couple of weeks at home will suffice. Look at this beauty! Throw the kids in the GLE and this will be my "bachelor" ride lol

  17. Yeah, in theory i could go to the range with the two different flex Autoflex shafts, my Epic Max LS, and my TSI2, and then try all the combos. Once everything is setup, its just unscrewing the head and screwing in the other shaft, just like if they were all the same brand heads and adapters.

  19. Not only is it a what did I practice today, but it's a what did I build today... We got our first snow of the season last night and so that meant today was spent getting the indoor net setup for the FlightScope Mevo+. I ended up building three 2"x3"x8ft lumber "clamps" that went around the rafters in our garage to hang the cage netting. I had to make some small adjustments to how I envisioned it along the way, but all in all it turned out perfectly. It tucks away a bit so that I can still pull my car in the garage. I broke it in with about 50 7 irons and some wedges. It took all the balls without issue. So excited to have an indoor space to hit that doesn't require a 40 minute drive. Still struggling with my swing, and thankfully have a lesson scheduled for Thursday. Lots of blocks and fades. I did get at least a couple nice looking wedges in today, though:

  21. As #1 was quite successful and came out better than expected I thought I'd have a go at doing another one. After a chat with the pro he recommended that a more traditional blade would be a good one to try and sell so that's what I'm doing. I'm going to do a set of 4 this time, 2 x RH & 2 x LH in both 304SS and carbon steel, so that we can put a couple into the shop for demo. It's all programmed on the mill, I just need a window in the work-load to get them machined. I did have time to do a sample of the face machining to see how it looks as I'm trying to keep the engraving/logo's to a minimum to try and give them a clean look. I'll, hopefully, get them done in time for when we can start playing at the end of March I'll update as I get more done but, as usual, all thoughts & input gratefully received. Steve

It’s hard to believe that is has been 20 years already. I was in 7th grade then and now I’m working for a career fire department. I think a lot of people my age saw what everyone did that day and it had some influence on them to want to be a fireman, police officer, or for many join the military.

  23. To me, the 3w has a very specific role in my bag, and when I use it for those specific things, it works really well. Every time I try to do something else with it, it's a mess. For me, it comes down to three specific shots: A tee shot that absolutely MUST move right to left. My driver tends to have a slight fade, so if the hole presents a shot with trouble right, and no bail-out by aiming down the left, I use the 3w to hit a consistent draw. It's probably 10-20 yards shorter than the driver, but I know it won't miss right. A tee shot where driver puts trouble in play, length-wise A shot from a perfect fairway lie that is intended to RUN onto a green that's open in front, and where a "miss" with the 3w is no worse than a lay-up shot to a wedge approach distance. Essentially, a green-light par 5 approach in 2 where a terrible 3w is no worse than the mid-iron layup. I use the first shot a LOT. We have 2 holes on my home course that demand such a shot, so generally I'll hit it at least twice a round. I use the second shot periodically when I play other courses, and almost never the third. That's very situational; maybe once every 20-30 rounds. As for tips, I'd suggest range time figuring out exactly how your 3w behaves, and what shots it covers for you -- then use it only for those. It also works well as a place to hang your towel ....

But if I had gone with the Highlander 3 years ago I definitely wouldn't be in this situation now! Looks like 2022 will be the year of one set of irons for me....EEEEH GADS!! Is that even possible?

    How'd you play?

Had extended my 5 wood to driver length and went out to game it. Single length woods Lol actually worked out well. Every shot was a fade including my irons. For some reason I just could not draw the ball as well my wedge were off too. I had to forward press for some reason for my timing. Something I normally don’t do Notice I wasn’t shifting my weight properly this day I think the forward press keep my weight on the front foot went to range afterward. To correct it I have to setup the club shaft pointed just slightly ahead then set the grip rather when I address the ball with grip already set

    Your best 3-wood tips!

One of my favorite clubs was a 3w when I gamed a taylormade Burner years ago .. then all of sudden couldn't hit it, so I when with a F9 cobra 5w and I was hitting that off the Tee and the fairway pretty well a lot easier to hit then the 3w. The problem which wasnt a bad one it was mostly an ego problem I couldn't get on in two on par 5s while hitting my second shot with the 5w so I bough the F9 3w and while I would hit that okay from the fairway for a little bit it wasn't as good as a hit as the 5w. But I hit the 3w fairly well off the tee so I keep it in the bag, also its adjustable so I can increase the loft. So to answer your question which I am not really doing but off the fairway 5w would be a better option then a 3w unless you are hitting it off the tee is my good too ..

  31. I will be testing some ProV1 RCT's alongside @edingc when the balls arrive. For what it is worth, this is a fun toy for me that let's me play golf anytime. Yes it does not beat going out to the course but when time (and now weather since I have moved from SoCal to Texas) don't permit you to play as much as you would like, this is a great sim. Better than an optishot and not as much as a skytrak. Better than just bashing balls into a net with no feedback! Also, I noticed that hitting range balls at the range vs hitting a real one (yes I sacrificed a new Maxfli in the name of science!) shows a huge difference in measurements. Has that been verified by any other testing?

Played a Tournament on Saturday, a shotgun start on hole number 16th. Well, nothing like starting your round with an a snowman. Cut Drive into the trees, drop straight down, top 3 wood moving it 70yds, hit 3 wood into the water.. great start. Got out the sand well today was in there a lot in the back 9. Make the turn to the front 9 and it was a Par fest. Made everything that was missed for birds and made every putt required to save par. Make the turn again to the back 9 and couldn't make a saving par, made the same strokes as the front 9 but didn't make a single thing. Yet I didn't have any doubles but 1 Triple. Moral of the story, golf sucks. LMAO!

It is very difficult to remember this terrible tragedy every year. These emotions every year, tears in my eyes. I think a lot about such an issue as Cultural diversity and how it influences the thoughts and, most importantly, actions of people in modern conditions. At its core, the 9/11 tragedy is a massive cultural disaster. On the writngbros website, I read several articles on this memorable day about cultural diversity, identity and reminded myself once again that you need to be kinder to your neighbors.

I was managing a hotel 2 miles from the Pentagon, just across the River in DC. We had a hotel full of DOD staff attending a meeting. Their phones were going off like alarm bells. It was an unbelievably crazy and scary day to be in DC. There were so many (fortunately)what turned out to be incorrect reports of The Capitol and State Departments having been hit as well. The following day were really crazy as well as no one could really get in or out of the city in any public transportation. So much of our guests were “stuck” in the hotel.

I was working as a printing press operator and I remember my supervisor at the time coming into the break area and telling us that his wife had called saying a plane had hit the WTC. We were all saddened initially as we thought it was an accident, then soon after the second plane hit. They let us off work to go be with our families and I distinctly remember the feeling of shock and uncertainty as to what was happening. It's strange to think there are young adults now that don't have the vivid memories of that day. I applaud all those who either joined the military, the fire department, or police force after the attack. You all are real heroes.

I was on my way to another town to fix a water main leak as a young 21 year old punk. I never thought anything like that was possible. I didn’t enlist because of it but I did join my small towns volunteer fire department. It was also a slap in the face realization of the evil in this world and created a greater appreciation for those that have served and continue to serve to protect our freedoms as well as those that at a drop of a hat , will stop what they are doing to help others even at great person risk to themselves.
