  1. My in-person lesson with Monte yesterday was profound. When I got to No Bogeys, I was hitting some warm up shots on another bay while Monte finished his lesson with another client. Monte had observed a few of my swings. When our lesson started, after a few minutes of conversation, he said he knew exactly what I needed to focus on based on the warm up swings in the other bay. Please bear with my explanations, they might not be explained 100 percent technically correct, because these are my wordings of what the issues are. Basically, the main issue is I get on the right side by the top of the backswing, and then during the downswing have a big hip shift/slide/thrust (its some combo of all of those) towards the target (the slide is towards the target, the thrust is diagonal (i.e. early extension). Monte said that based on the above, I likely miss big right and then some sort of hook in compensation, which is exactly right. The main thing he had me work on is get into my right side early on in the swing, and then at left arm parallel start to get back to my left side (i.e. recentering). I am aware of this move and have seen it a lot from Monte, AMG, and others, but wasn't something I have focused much in the past because it wasn't something I was prescribed to work on in the past. I was able to get the feel of the move pretty much right away and went through a series of shots where I was executing well. When executed well, everything was mostly dead online. Shots were like 1 foot left, 1 foot right of the target line (yes, 1 foot, not even 1 yard). I started to lose the feel a bit at some points, and reverted somewhat to a mix of old and new move, but the results were still decent (i had some worse regressions during the playing lesson portion, which i will talk about on the next post, but Monte said that was to be expected on course). Here is a Trackman view of the dispersion. (note, the shorter shots weren't mishits, they were warm-ups and early on shots getting the feel of the new move. these are with a 9 iron)

  2. ... I have never played TM wedges before the MG3. I just didn't like the feel. This won't help you but I love these 2 MG3 wedges I am playing now. Since the 50* replaced another 50* the distance was very similar with the TM being a couple yards longer. Bump and runs are the same but it just looks so much better to my eye at address and I was instantly confident with it. For whatever reason the 58* is the most consistent LW I have played for full and partial shots. I have not been this happy with my wedges since the original Cleveland 588 Tour Action wedges. That said, I don't wanna be responsible for another bad relationship so YMMV.

  5. ... After playing a dead straight leading edge on my wedges, I never warmed up to my Cobra 50*. Performance was excellent but the look still bothered me after playing it almost a year so I ordered a MG3 on Dec 13th scheduled to arrive the last week of January. I was surprised when it arrived yesterday! I had some trade ins and TM points so it only cost me $18 but with a Steelfiber shaft the MG3 wedge was $249. Prices are just out of control.

  7. Thanks. Definitely not going to deviate from this, especially after seeing the immediate impact that the correct movement can have. Normally my dispersion is right, right, right, left. Monte had said that everyone in his clinics has too much hip rotation/movement in their putting stroke, but mine was extreme.

  8. The second part of the lesson was a 9 hole playing lesson. I knew i needed a playing lesson because my short game is trash. The variability/consistency of my short game is extremely high some days its sufficient, some days its atrocious. One the first hole, had about a 50 yard shot into the green. Took my lob wedge and hit what I felt was a partial shot. Monte saw it and said that I will immediately drop 3 strokes if I fix my technique. He said I was taking a full swing from 50 yards but decelerating to get it to the right distance. Then he saw me putt and said I have a weight shift to the backfoot and then a hip rotation on the forward stroke. Later on, on the next hole, Monte saw me execute a shorter chip shot and he said I am firing my hips on a 15 yard chip shot. So the large variability in my short game is caused by improper technique, which in my mind is a really good thing. If I had been using proper technique and having this much variability, that means that I was really poor at execution. With improper technique, there are specific changes that I can work on that will improve my short game. Monte was saying that with improvements, that I should quickly see a 3 to 10 shot drop in my scores, but that I have to put in the work. Here are the main specific changes, drills, feels, etc. that will help me: With putting, put an alignment stick through my belt loops when practicing to monitor the hip movement Monte said due to the hip rotation in my putting, I naturally pull the ball, so I am to the right to compensate. During the lesson, when I was able to improve on limiting hip rotation, I started to miss everything right With chipping, pitching, and shorter approach shots (less than 100 yards), my lower body needs to stay more quiet, and I should feel like I am on my left side immediately, almost like a reverse pivot. The key here is feel. Monte is not saying to go out and make a big reverse pivot move on these shots. But what feels like that to me, is actually results in keeping the lower body quiet He also said not to rely on the bump and run shot that I have been using, and that the bump and run should only be used in a few limited circumstances. I had been relying on it so much because of my high variability with any other short game chip/pitch shot. He said to stop choking down on my short chip/pitch shots. I tend to choke down quite a bit, most likely as a compensation for worrying about blading the ball too far I was able to execute some of these changes pretty decently on the course during the playing lesson, and they had instantaneous positive impacts.

  9. I've been really focusing on my setup this offseason and am realizing the root cause of some of my longstanding issues. A constant fight for me has been to stop my right shoulder from "coming under" on the downswing. I tend to raise my left shoulder and the right shoulder comes down at the start of the backswing, which leads to a lot of side bend and throws my club path way out right. If my timing is good I hit big draws, but if I'm a little off I end up either shanking it or hitting blocks. The realization that hit me the other day is that my initial backswing move with my lower body was not doing me any favors. My initial takeaway ended up with me having a slight sway and putting almost all of my pressure onto my trail toes at the top of the backswing. This not only limited my hip and shoulder turn, it caused me to push off my toes at the start of the downswing. That would make me early extend, drop the shoulder, expose the hosel, etc. in order to not come over the top. A few weeks ago I found I was hitting the ball much better with the feeling of the right heel staying on the ground through impact. And, after cutting a tennis ball in half to emulate the Force Pedals, I found putting them under right trail heel and front toes improved my impact even more. Both the trail heel thought and the DIY Force Pedal had me rotating a little better so that I would get my pressure more evenly spread out on my right foot and not just in the toes. The biggest difference is felt in hitting chips and pitches. When I'm doing it right on these types of shots, it's a crazy difference. Feeling really good today. Can't tell you how many practice swings I've taken with a plastic coat hanger on my breaks just to try to cement this feel in.

    How'd you play?

Just an unbelievable lightning in a bottle round which (OF COURSE) was only 9 holes since I have young children. But truly a wild ride and, apologies in advance, I am pretty amped about it. I should be clear that I made everything I looked at but overall most everything was clicking. Also, I started using "myRound Pro" app from Taylormade and once I got used to inputting everything I found it to be quite useful. Will do an unofficial review. Anyway, excuse my gloating -- I will be sure to come back and post a s**t round when I have one to balance all this optimism out. I am pretty sure the strokes gained are calculated for 18 holes so I think I cut all these in 1/2. But still, the putting tells the story. I have been gaming my old Seemore for the last few weeks and things have been getting better and better. Also, I roll putts with my Blast golf sensor 4-5 nights a week for about 100 putts each time so it is all clicking. Anyway, look at this rollercoaster score card: I caught fire on #3 which is the hardest hole on the golf course (445 yd par 4). And, honestly, I wasn't really aware of where I was scorewise until I birdied 7 and I was like "well...I think I am getting uncomfortable now..." To birdie 8 and then steer it home on 9 knowing I was cruising under par was a great feeling. All my birdie putts made were between 6-15 feet. The bogey I made on #6 was a great save as well. I hit a drive that was right on the rough line for a really squirrely lie. Hit what I thought was a perfect shot that flew on me and plugged in the back of a bunker. Had to gouge it out to 50 ft and 2 putt from there. Once I did that I felt like the rest of the round was easy. It won't always be this good (or ever again?) so I want to really enjoy this feeling. I have been practicing my short game furiously and this was the culmination of that preparation and practice. Thanks for indulging me!

  13. What is funny I have always been a 588 fan ever since they came out. Now recently I had to add a 52* gap wedge for the current set up. I had a Mack Daddy 2 Cally I rescued off the junk pile a while back Raw and rusty. I had messed with it some and came to like it as I can hit some amazing shots with it. I also have the 56 that goes with it. Tried it Saturday in all of its Rusty Glory and liked it better than the modified PM 56*. So it has been raining and cold the last 2 days and so both of them have been in the Vinegar and Coke Soak. Man they turned out good grooves sharp and all. No wear whatsoever can not figure why someone literally threw them out. Someone at the course the other day chided me as in thought you were a Cleveland man? Yep but By God these were after all designed by Roger Cleveland and it says so right on the back. And yes I am playing pain free still with the TMs with the Steel Fiber Shafts-- Have gotten to hitting those pretty good but still have to learn them on distance control shaping etc. Kinda having control issues for me Saturday as in I can not cut them as much and when I really nut them they go. I was kinda grumbling but one of my buds stressed that I had hit blade Macs for 45 years so I can not get used to those TMs in a month and a half. But eventually I will figgure that out But basically my golf stuff is set for me unless I find like some antique at the thrifts or something--- But thanks again old buddy for your encouragement and imput on those shafts. You basically helped save the game for me--- Merry Christmas

  17. The issue with the full swing / decelerating for less than 100 yard shots is extremely common. Ask somebody who struggles with this to take a 1/2 swing and then watch their hands get to their shoulder level... Show them the video and they can't believe it! My big $$ idea of the day is to fabricate a right angle training aid stick to push in the ground that will act as a horizontal stop between the waist and shoulder to stop the hands at the desired height.

  18. The Spieth chicken wing went away during the lesson with the proper pressure shift and recentering that Monte had me work on. While that was the focus of the lesson, that change in movement made a lot of other bad things go away. Monte said that pretty much all of the bad things that happen in my swing are related to this in one way or another.

  19. The above post really contain all the answers that you need - I would not go hacking off shaft length on a club that I paid $250 plus for without trying it first and that's easily accomplished by griping down - you could even measure from the butt and put tape down 1/2" and another 1" inch. It could be that you need more loft on those clubs though rather than a shorter shaft. Fitting is the best way to go but if you wish to do it yourself experiment in ways that aren't permanent - This is coming from the voice of experience - I've ruined many a club and purchased others chasing the latest fad only to discover the fad didn't suit my game.

  21. IMO, the longer the club the hard they are to hit. Shortening the 3 woods is why 4 woods are more popular. I would say that the larger headed hybrids are the replacement for longer shafted fairway woods. As we start moving to clubs beyond the driver max distance becomes less of a focus and we seek specific distances. Tweaking lofts and clubs lengths are ways to hit distance targets, gaining more control of the clubs, and improve ball striking. I think we talk driver length the most because it is the longest club in the bag and we hear about how shaft length has been increased. The same thing has happened throughout the set as people chase more distance.

  26. @vandylandboy can I relate to your situation. Thanks for posting your story and the data of your practice sessions. This year has been terrible on the greens. 4 handicap giving up 4-5 strokes on average on the greens a round. Great year for ball striking though...I think I tried 12 different putters this year. I have a nice collection of Scotty's but most are blades with lots of toe hang. For most of my golf life I have been above average putter and putting was a strength. Got the yips this spring and was routinely missing 3 footers. Got so bad, I would rather have a 10 footer than a 3 footer. So I did what any crazy golfer would do, buy more equipment. On top of that, tried about every technique known to man. Here is the list: 50 inch broom style, SIK 45 inch arm lock, Scotty T22 Newport II 37 inch, Scotty Phantom X 5.5 (JT), Scotty GoLo 5, Several old vintage Scotty's, Scotty Futura X7 38 inch, Taylor Made Spider EX, SIK Pro 37 inch. Multiple grips changes, grips, set ups. Heads up, left hand low, pencil, saw, traditional....even tried putting left handed. Finally snowed here so practicing on a perfect practice mat. Trying to stick with something, so most consistent visually (where the putter face and track is and how the ball is rolling and of course going in the hole) is the Futura X7 which is the only face balanced putter I own with min toe hang. Super stroke 2.0 XL grip, using the pencil grip. I seem to be able to keep the face on my line the most consistent with this set up. No yips. I have used it before on the course and see improvement 10 feet and I, but historically have struggled with longer putts with mallets. I did order a Odyssey Two Ball Ten 38 inch/2 upright which it total face balance and no toe hang, which will be here in a few weeks. I hate giving up the feel I have with a blade putter, especially the trillium putters, but I need performance over feel at this point. Will continue to practice until the snow melts or until the wife and I get to Palm Springs in February. Come spring, practice, practice, practice on all lengths until I get comfortable with the set up. I know I need to stick with something though. Golf buddies are always cracking jokes about what putter and technique I will be using today. What kind of launch monitor are you using to track your putting?

  27. Just ordered two Ben Hogan Equalizer II wedges (50* and 54*) in black with KBS tour shafts. I didn't pull the trigger on a 58* because the equalizer II demo I had (56*) didn't feel like it was super comfortable in an open position. So I still need to find a replacement for my low bounce 57* cleveland reg 588. I think I want a mid bounce replacement as the low bounce option is great when I am playing really well but not as good when I am struggling a bit. I will be auditioning a host of 58* wedges over the winter. With this purchase these are the first new wedges I have bought in 4 years. Very exciting.

    How'd you play?

Finally got to play yesterday for the first time in a month. Quit after 14 holes because pace of play had slowed and back was a bit sore - plus I wanted to watch the Packers game with my daughter. I was very rusty - don’t know what I shot because we weren’t keeping score - my goal was to hit the ball solidly as I was really struggling with squirrely shots. Complete success in that regard - thinned my first iron a bit - other than that was in the ball park of the club face the rest of the day and was very consistent with my shot shape and ball flight - alignment and short game not so much but that’s easier to fix than chunks, skulls and heels. Looking forward to getting out a few times next week.

Know I started this as a dog day thread but feel like it can be a centralized dog thread…. really lost, last week found out the youngest pup had a liver disease. Brought him in thinking he may have had a bad tooth or something and the vet anticipated him to have less than a month….we struggled all week to get food in him or for him to take his medication….we had to help him along yesterday morning as he was not going to eat and just was not himself at all. my wife was going through pictures today and had over 1000. He was a photogenic, lover of his people and crazy soul. We called him little gronkowski because he was just all over the place. He was the only one to survive his littler and that’s why we named him gunner, a survivor. We had to let him go way to soon and it really sucks. “If heaven doesn’t have dogs, I want to go where they went”

  38. My goal over the winter is to work on putting. I have always been a pretty good putter but I noticed this past season I didn't have as many 1 putts as I normally do. I got lazy to put it frankly. If I was on the green in regulation my mind was easy par instead of possible birdie and didn't focus. On my Christmas list is a putting mat. Well I saw a UPS delivery that I probably wasn't supposed to see. So for sure I will be focusing on putting. Even though I said I wasn't going to chase numbers next season, if I can play as well next season as I did this year and make one more putt per round that should be the ticket to scratch. Wishful thinking but you always need a goal to shoot for. Thanks for the link to the strokes gained calculator. I'm sure that will come in handy. Since I have no clue where I stand versus where I think I stand. Tools are good.

Right now it is almost impossible for him to walk the 4 rounds, he did also say he was not asking for an exception and a card, but the accident was 10 months ago, and he was out of total bed rest only 7 months ago. I think that Tiger is happy to be alive and still have his leg, so maybe competing a few times per year for the majors is enough for him. Regardless I know there will be a couple teams with him on their rooster.

  49. Just did a full fitting at their HQ in Scottsdale last week. Had some interesting (to me, at least) results... 1. Driver: nice club, loved the sound, feel and looks of it. But as any good GolfSpy knows those three items matter neither a jot nor a tittle when it comes to performance. While the Gen4 driver performed well, it did not outperform the driver I brought with me - the as yet unreleased XXIO X. They were pretty similar, so it made no sense to get one. FYI - that XXIO X is going to be a good driver for the target golfer. Based on the numbers, we didn't even bother with the 0211 driver. 2. FW: I ditched my 3 wood a while ago and decided to go with the Cleveland 18 degree Hy-Wood. It was a good decision, as 3 woods and I are definitely no longer on speaking terms. I have been gaming a Callaway 2-Deep 2-wood - never use it off the deck (low bullets) but it can be a useful weapon off the tee. The fitter made up a Gen 4 2 wood for me - WOW!. The head shape and leading edge means it might - might - be useful off the deck, but off the tee it's a monster. It's going in the bag. 3. Hybrid: I'm on again/off-again with hybrids, and the Cleveland Hy-Wood seems to be the right mix of hybrid ease and fairway wood distance for me. Kevin the fitter set me up with an 18 degree Gen 4 hybrid - another WOW moment. Really liked it. Not sure if it will kick the Cleveland out of the bag, but it will be a fun battle. Distance was spot on and ease of launch was welcome. 3. Irons: Tried both the 0211 and the Gen 4 0311P. Kevin tried like hell to get me into the Gen4 irons, but the difference between them and the 0211s was minor, with the edge actually going to the 0211 irons. We tried different shafts, and I was very surprised the "stock" Elevate 95s performed best for me. I would have liked to have tried the KBS $ Taper LIte, but according to Kevin, no one has those right now. Thanks Supply Chain! Tried the XF version of the Gen4 - those didn't do squat for me. At $77 per club, the 0211 may be the very best buy in golf. 4. Wedges: The next best buy might be the $129 forged wedges. Really liked those as well - I do like the RTZ ZipCore wedges better, but these are a strong second. Liked them much better than the more expensive milled version. And for $129? It's another no-brainer. 5. Putters: Didn't like the 0211 models at all, even though I wanted to. The Battle Ready putters, however, were a different story. We didn't do a full fledged putter fitting, but I immediately took to the Blackbird, the Gunboat and the Closer. The Gunboat was the largest head, and was stupid-stable. The Closer is a "full-bodied" blade and might have been the best feeling, but I was sinking putts like crazy with the Blackbird. I have too many freaking putters as it is, so I don't think another one is in the cards. But if it was, it would probably be the Blackbird. Or the Gunboat. Or maybe the Closer. Or maybe I have a problem. Bottom line, will be pulling the trigger on the irons, FW and hybrid. Not sure on the wedges yet, I have a crap-ton of inventory to get rid of. Anyone want some old irons? No reasonable offer refused

I have the free month of DECADE already and that was very good by itself. If I would just execute the "Tiger 5" consistently I'd probably drop three shots off my handicap. Oh, and almost forgot. I also bought a 3D printed leveling stand for the Mevo+.
