  1. Traded some DMs with Ian. Nothing is changing and TXG will continue to use Foresight and Quintic

  2. Thanks APH. I absolutely love doing reviews and my favorite part of them is the interaction with other members during the review process I cancelled my TXG YouTube membership after Matt’s announcement. TXG now has the backing of a multi million dollar company and doesn’t need my few bucks a month to help create content.

  3. We all still really appreciate your review that was done on the clubs. Tier 1 class! However yes, the news of Matt leaving stings...a lot. I pulled my subscription a few months back as I felt something had changed within their videos and not that I didn't like their content, but I certainly wasn't as eager to watch it as I had in years past. Wishing all the best for Matt and his career moving forward as well as his overall well being. He will certainly be missed and did an amazing job bringing TXG to the heights it achieved.

  4. Yeah, this is some pretty disappointing news given that TXG for me epitomized the ideal combination of professionalism but yet maintaining a good bit of community feel. All that being said, with Toronto likely staring down continued restrictions I don't know what more the channel could have produced this year that would have been different or new. I really like the content, but so many new releases show such minor improvements over the old that it unfortunately just became a lot of the same results in every video. Found myself really just skipping the majority of the product reviews lately. The bread and butter of the channel (for me) would be more fittings, but obviously with the restrictions that hasn't been able to happen. The production value of the course vlogs were also great, but again, not really the original intent of the channel. Obviously sparse on the details at the moment but I'm sure neither Ian nor Matt made their decisions lightly.

  7. My first close encounter of 2022 . #16 at Las Barrancas playing the quartz tee and 177 yards. It's an elevated tee (~50 ft.) and it appeared to have hit the stick. The ball mark was about 7 feet short and right. Not my closest ever but still worthy of a post and perhaps set the KTP mark in this early part of the season.

  8. Ian has stated numerous times that trackman shouldn’t be used for indoor fittings. Club Champion exclusively uses trackman for indoor fittings. not sure how this is going to play out Edit: confirmed that TXG will continue to use Foresight and Quintic

  9. Read on another forum that tomorrow there will be an announcement that TXG is being bought by Club Champion. Club champion Instagram story seems to hint at this as well. No info on impacts but it is definitely interesting especially with the reputation of the two companies.

  10. After seeing the news today, I can honestly say that I felt like I was gut punched with the reaction I had. Hopefully this will be a good transaction for both parties and it won't be as bad as my initial reaction earlier today. It's sad that the channel is losing Matt, he's just a robot hitting the ball and his interaction with Ian was always superb. Hopefully, between Ryan Barath and Mike Martyseiwicz they'll still have some good videos. I really enjoy listening to them on the Build Shop podcast. @jlukes, with all that went on This year as far as CCC5, you all did a wonderful job dealing with all the hurdles of the supply chain issues. I think the crew we had this year was able to expertly navigate all the problems and I don't think anyone could have done better.

  12. As long as it doesn't negatively impact TXG I'm all for it. Even better if TXG rubs off on CC as I'd love a TXG fitting at some point, but the additional costs of travel will keep it out of my budget for some time. However, there's a CC within 30 minutes of me currently.

  13. Wow..Very interesting. Well It is two year old conversation, but when I was there in 2019, Ian told me he was very much looking at expanding into the US and had a couple markets in mind where he already had discussions going on. One of those markets already has two CC locations in the suburbs. But I think RickyBobby's comment about possibly taking the buyout and going home, or onto a nother venture, isn't impossible.

  14. Wonder if this is more about club champion expanding into Canada or within Canada and not having to find space and/or construction as much as it would be about txg trying to expand via CC. TXG and CC have different fitting approach with CC using shaft then find the head and TXG doing like almost every fitter starting with head and fine tuning with the shaft, so that dynamic will be interesting if Ian stays. Maybe it’s an offer Ian couldn’t refuse and will take the money and go back home.

  17. Pressure does change everything. Testing a putter on a green versus inside changes nothing as you can still stand in the same spot. What you are advocating is playing and evaluating the club. I do agree that is something that needs to be done. But is that a club issue or a mental issue? I personally agree that the testing isn’t ideal, but as I know you have mentioned and as have I, the testing isnt intended for players like us; it is intended for the player that buys off the rack. My biggest subjective feedback on putters is related to the grip.

  18. Whoa. That's.... wow. EDIT: Just read his Instagram statement. Very telling.

  19. ... I feel the opposite. Controlled indoor putting is just that. Putting on the course when it matters is a completely different animal. I make the same argument for getting fit for a driver when you stand in the same spot and dial in your shots when they don't even count as opposed to one time only on the tee and the results count. Pressure changes everything. I don't want what tests best, I want what performs best under the pressure of actually playing. I bought the original Spyder putter after rolling it fantastic on the hard, fast and flat surfaces of the PGA SS. It was abysmal for me on the course. It still performed well on straight flat putts but anything of distance with break was a disaster. I sold it after one round. I have found Scotty's to have excellent balance and feel. I have played several but none stayed in my bag for long. My last putting purchase for putting on Bermuda after a lifetime of putting a blade putter on bent greens, I was determined to get the best mallet putter for my stroke regardless of cost. I expected to buy a Scotty or Bettinardi or other "premium" putter. I took several days of testing to make sure my results were consistent and ended up with a $129 Cleveland mallet. It was a real surprise for me but I have been very happy with the performance. ... I LOVE MGS testing but putters especially I take with a grain of salt. Putting is so personal and I would argue more mental than physical for anyone with even close to a repeatable stroke. I use a traditional putter grip, Sinkfit Skinny and testing with a fatter grip will not give me a true idea of how it would perform on the course. Anything other than a 33.5" length the I have putted with for 36 years would also be less than ideal. So I could use all the testing putters and give a general opinion but not sure that would hold up on the course once I had it cut and weighted to my perfect length and grip.

  22. Manufacturers are requested to send in 34" stock putters that can be purchased OTR. Some manufacturers may send multiple configurations of a model and based on our stroke style we may putt with only one of the models (for this years test, there is one manufacturer that has sent in multiple lie angles). Protocol is that we get groups of about 6 putters and hit 8 putts at 5, 10, and 20 feet (the order is not the same for all putters). We don't have to putt any putt within 12" of the hole, but anything else has to be putted; we then document how many 1 putts and 3 putts we have. MGS then calculates strokes gained for each putter and provides results. WE also provide subjective feedback on each putter but that isn't used in determining most wanted. It is interesting rolling all those putts; I can tell you that last years testing told me I shouldn't really game a mallet putter. I didn't three putt any, but my performance was far worse than with a blade putter. Why don't SC putters do better? Who knows, but IMO they really aren't all that. They are nice and high quality putters and I went through my own SC phase but if you think about it why should a SC Newport should be better than any other Anser style putter? What I do notice rolling all these putters is that they do perform differently. With some I have much better distance control and with some I have much better directional control. Maybe it is the grip that is included with the putter since we test them as OTR, we don't get to put grips we like on the putters.

Saturday was my last round before shoulder surgery. I shot a 49/42:91 and had several tries at birdie. I did par the last hole, #18 which is one of the hard3st holes on the course(#3 handicap). Looking ahead, I am positive that my shoulder will be so much better and I can rehab with a strong Spring ahead of me.

  24. ***Note, this is a putter from my personal collection, not from my business*** Up for sale is an older model Scotty Cameron Squareback with a custom gold color refinish done by BOS and a OG Stability Shaft. It has an extension in it, so it can play up to about 35", but I can also cut it down. It doesn't currently have a grip on it, but I have a few grips that I could install on it. It is a used putter, so it does have scratches on the bottom, so please don't expect this to be a mint condition putter. Asking price is $200 shipped conus

    How'd you play?

I played Las Barrancas yesterday and shot a 44/41 and 42/49 playing a two ball format from the quartz tees which is 6300 yards. I normally play the copper tee (5578 yards) with the group as all but one simply do not have the length. My scores definitely reflected the 700 yard difference. GIR's on a handful of holes were just unobtanium even with well struck shots. Also, it made three of the par 3's 170+ and even #16 playing 177 as they had it in the far back portion. That said, a couple of holes actually took typical hazards out of play but, ultimately, lengths over 6000 just seem too much for me. I've oft felt the copper tee is a bit on the short side and believe my optimum length, depending on slope/rating, to be 5900. It was fun playing these tees as most of the holes provided an entirely different perspective but, unless wind conditions are near clam, will go back to the copper. I started off with a Callaway ERC vs. Hex Chrome contest but lost the triple track on #4 It's replacement was a e12 but that one was lost on #6. So I pulled a yellow Q-star and a Maxfli Tour which both survived the rest of the round. The Srixon nearly got me kicked out of the "Still Aceless" thread. Here are some more views of the course. #14 556 yard into the wind. Driver + 3w + 5w = 10 yards short. Hole #4 Hole #15

  28. This is easily the biggest reason people purchase Scotty's OTR if you ask me. Scotty's are constructed using materials and methods which produce a premium looking and feeling product - it's like buying a nice watch from that perspective. You can also expect great performance if you take the time do a fitting or at least give a few models a proper test. I've said it before, but I demoed the SC model I wanted for a month on the course before I pulled the trigger and it did perform well for me.

47/44 for a 91 on Saturday. Went from hitting gentle fades 4 days earlier to pull hooks in the first 7 holes. Couldn't get comfortable with my wedges all round but am chalking that up to the persistent rain we were up against. Most importantly, one birdie and zero 3 putts!

  30. Same. I’ve seen many try from the reps and get denied. Some shops will do it for certain customers and only for the less popular head like the tsi4 They choose the shafts that produce the best results for the larger golfing public. Remember the word stock doesn’t necessarily mean the same as it used to. Most brands have a couple shafts that most would consider stock. These are the shafts you will see in the retail shafts on the clubs. Then there are the no upcharge shafts. These are geared more towards the golfers who won’t see as good results from the stock offerings but still doesn’t raise the price of the club at retail

  31. I voted no on that poll and I’ll put it here slack and MGS for everyone to see why. I personally don’t like the choosing of a replacement mid tourney. The player should be stated before the tourney starts. No sure how we go about it to make it easy but that’s my thought.

  33. Having had zero experience with Club Champion I would love to hear how you all think it would effect TXG? My first thought is that TXG is willing to sell and hopefully keep their brand, but hopefully with a large company backing them they can further look to expand into more areas and more stores? Keeping on that I wonder how much the restrictions in Ontario have effected them? It is a hot spot in Canada and maybe this will help them on a strictly business end of things? Regardless interesting development and I hope that it is they are only being bought more in name and will continue with their TXG brand and more or less just be a sister company so to speak without being asked or forced into a direction that they want to be in. That being said I don't see Ian being the type of owner to do that and maybe again this will open up further opportunities for them!

Definitely true. I am hitting lots of drivers as part of most wanted testing and have been watching ball speed especially with the TM claims. Depending on driver I am seeing ball speeds from 149-158. Why does it vary? My guess is due to inconsistent strikes and how I react to the club itself. Also, the different drivers can have wildly different loft and shaft configurations to get toward optimal conditions. Also different drivers seem to be better setup for specific misses; meaning one could be better high toe and another low heel.

  35. Had my 1st driving lesson with the pro on Friday. Have been struggling with with a bit of a slice so wanting to get rid of that.. Mostly good - set up, ball position, hands, alignment etc just need to widen my takeaway. Gave me a couple of pointers and was much better by the end of the lesson. Good to get some feedback on my GC2 numbers too. Average 158mph ball speed, 280y carry, 2200 rpm spin after dropping the head to 7.5°.

    Built a beast.

@PMookieNo. I’m saying that originally I went to the G425MAX because I had swing issues(physical issues) and could not find the center of the face. The Ping was much more forgiving than my older M5. Then as time moved on and my physical issues allowed me to make better swings, my Ping, while still finding the fairway, fell out of favor. I didn’t feel like I was getting the distance for the effort. I had Ping G425Max Driver, 7&9 woods and 6 Hybrid, G410 3&5 woods, i500 6-P irons. I never loved the driver the way I did the 7&9 and 6H. I went to a TM fitting at my club and got excellent performance out of the SIM2 Max. It was the TM Reps comment of it was how much faster the ball speed was coming off the TM vs the Ping and attributing it to “Hotter Face”. I thought that was BS, and I attributed it to the lighter shaft and head weight and overall “fit” vs just the superior face. I set out to see if I could improve the performance and get similar distance out of the Ping by changing shafts and weights in the back. I played the TM and Ping side by side for a couple of months. The TM was a 9 set to standard and the Ping was a 10.5 set to 9. These were vastly different heads and I always felt the Ping spun too much for me. The TM was better in looks, sound, and feel and had more of a fade bias while the Ping was more of a draw bias and more forgiving and so easy to hit off the deck, but I didn’t prefer the sound or looks at address. BUT in terms of hit fairways and distance to the pin there was no real difference. Both performed well when set up similarly. The big difference came when I turned the SIM2 down 2 degrees and hit up more on it. I couldn’t do that with the Ping, but if I would have bought a 10.5 SIM2 I couldn’t have done that either. Also, I didn’t have launch monitor numbers. I just went by hitting them side by side on the few days I could slip out to the course during the week. (and had to make good swings with both.) I’m pretty sure if I would have done this like I just did my putter and sought professional supervision, I could have come up with the best driver for me in less time (and perhaps cheaper.) But where is the fun in that. However, I sold the Ping and used the proceeds to buy an Evnroll ER5B (after being properly fitted). I will correct something I stated in the last post. I said I have not drastically increased my swing speed. Truthfully, I have no idea. I probably have increased my speed, it is just that I have reduced the effort in my swing which probably increased my swing speed where it counts.

  37. I actually did it twice at demo days. Talked the fitter into selling it to me at the end of the day as used. Cash talks. I put a blue sharpie mark on the head and shaft in a discrete location so I knew I got back the correct combination that worked for me. He had others in the van anyway. Its not like it was their only head.

  38. I'll give that a try! I feel like is going to be a work in progress to get happy with how the bag is set up. I've played so long with a certain organization that's optimal (to me) for riding. I like the way everything there in your bag is easier to find.

    PW to GW gap question

Depends on how you intend to use them and how that flows with the rest of your set. Is 25 yards the actual measured difference or is that a guess? I only ask because simply going by loft doesn't always work out the way you might expect based on varying club designs. You should also consider how adjusting the lofts will affect bounce and offset (more loft = more bounce/less offset, less loft = less bounce/more offset). The differences will be relatively miniscule, but something to consider. You also have the option of bending each club just 1 degree to achieve the desired result. It really doesn't matter much IMO which club you make the adjustment to; just know you'll likely be introducing another issue elsewhere. However, if you only use the next wedge down (SW for example) for partial shots, you might be safer bending the GW only.

  40. Could be swing, shaft, head, or a combination of all those things. Some things that would influence: head weight, shaft weight, shaft profile, driver settings, grip weight, grip size, head properties, and how you respond to all of it. Ideally need to see data from a launch monitor.

  41. Most pros using them aren’t actually fit by scotty and definitely don’t have custom fit ones. There are some like JT, Scott, Faxon and Rickie off the top of my head. Scotty has a tour rep and he has a bunch of putters and works with any of the pros early in the week. Scotty goes to some tour stops. As to the OP I’ve wondered this too. Purely speculation but I think there’s some bias against them which we all know bias good or bad will influence peoples play and decision. With that said I think some of it has to do with the inserts he used and even many scotty lovers didn’t care for them. Many prefer the older models but that has changed in the last couple years as he’s gotten away from the inserts.

  43. Just put a league poll up for vote. Vote Yes or No by midnight, January 17: WD Replacement Option Background: When a player WDs from a tournament (injury, COVID, or other), all of their stats are zeroed out. Even if they were leading the tournament...see Rahm @ the Memorial last year. This isn't something that can be controlled by league settings because the official PGA Tour stats are affected. A WD, to the PGA, counts the same as never having entered the event at all. We've dealt with this issue in past years as "Sorry, it happens" but COVID randomness and a change to start/sit format has us reconsidering this stance. Proposed ByLaw: If a started player WDs from an event, the affected owner(s) may select an alternate player from their bench to take their place IF they make the selection publicly (forum, Fantrax, or Slack) BEFORE the start of the next round of play.

  44. just going to merge this into the 2022 Releases Thread. There will be lots more coming! Can't wait for the new Cobra lineup, PXG 0311 hit the USGA conforming list. Titleist will have their new wedges. I'm sure we will see some new things from Ping and likely Cleveland? I don't think much will come out new from Mizuno that already hasn't been discussed or released, but maybe another new driver or two?

  45. So you are swing out to in which is what we have seen in all of your videos. The differences could be how the shaft feels to you. The blue being heavier kind of goes against your thoughts about how lighter shafts make you lose your swing. It seems like the counterbalance of the blue isn’t as good if a fit as the green. where you are making contact on the face is going to produce lower spin numbers but will give higher launch. The peak height of 140’+ is high and that’s probably coming from the across the ball swing and your release. without seeing the shot by shot chart it’s hard to say what is what, but between a sim that’s not real accurate compared to a launch monitor and your swing those are the main issues. Like cnosil says if you are going the self fitting route look at the end result especially on course.

    It's a trifecta

Thanks for the birthday wishes, guys! But it was one of the worst birthdays ever... I got my booster jab a couple of days before my birthday and for some reason I caught the flu at the same time, so flu symptoms + vaccine symptoms packed together... knocked me out for 3-4 days. So not only didn't I get to celebrate, I spent 4 days isolated in my room to avoid infecting the kids. My wife has been sleeping on the couch since

  47. I think scotty does some stuff that is exceptional. The process controls they follow in construction, fit and finish probably make them the leader in spec matching putters. If they are selling a putter that is listed at 68* lie with 2* loft, I'd bet a lot that any version of that putter you grab off the shelf is exactly those specs. If I could go get fit for a scotty at the Titleist facility, I'm sure it would be the best possible putter for me. That said, I'd also never buy one at a store. Why spend the money on an Armani suit that isn't your size? Off the rack is what MGS tests for most wanted and what most people buy. Overall it looks like how a Scotty comes from the factory, is more geared to a small subset of the player pool.
    2 points
  48. I think part of it is that there are so many more models of Scotty than other brands. Yes, his putters win a ton on tour, but if you look at the staff players, they all have their own model (I expect someone on MGS to prove me wrong) and many have "PROTO" somewhere in the title. Compare that to TM where all their tour wins are Spiders.
