Took an early AM flight down to Disney with my wife this morning. It’s our 9 year anniversary tomorrow and we decided to take a vacation without the kids! Shout out to Nana and Papa, it’s our first extended stay away. Headed to Disney Springs to grab some drinks!

Tuesday Exec another beautiful morning 65*, 46 mph winds and sunny. 1st hole missed birdie order putt on lip so kick in par. Kinda got weird after that. Good shots followed by really bad shots (mostly skull). Got a lucky Bird on short par 4, 5 bogies weren’t pretty. mended up +4.

Decided only to take the 5 iron (err... weight) out today. It's a players design, medium/fast tip, with a Portuguese Cork grip. Not too many birdies, but plenty of fishies.

Got out for nine this morning. Putting continues to be my strength at this point. No 3 putts. One 1 putt and the rest were 2 putts half of which were tap ins. I switched back to the stock Ping Alta CB shaft in my driver. I’m seem to be getting more carry with this shaft over the HZRDUS Black Smoke I had in my driver. My iron game is an absolute train wreck at the moment. So I have a clear understanding of what to work on. I did have a couple of really good full wedges into greens with my gap wedge and my sand wedge.

Just because I'm so damn proud of them, here's the WGI Finals run from our kids that won them the bronze medal this past weekend out in Dayton, OH. My son is the Bass 4 drummer, just look for the one kid in the bass line with the terrible beard For reference - you get 11 minutes TOTAL to set up on the floor, perform, then get all the instruments and props back off the floor. If you take too long, you get penalized. So imagine getting all of that out there, set up, then off again as a parent. It's a lot of fun, lemme tell ya...

Freeze warnings overnight and it was awfully chilly this morning, so I got out a little after noon instead. By myself again and walked. Upper 40s and a little breezy but the sun was shining. I didn't exactly keep score this time although Shot Scope says I shot 96. Things unraveled a bit on the back nine and I dropped a second ball several times feeling I could do better. Just getting frustrated as the round went on. Doing better about not swaying but I found myself on my back foot in my follow through pretty often. Something to continue working on. When I transferred correctly the results were encouraging. Shot of the day was my second shot on the par 5 third hole. After a topped drive I hit my 3 wood off line to the left (poor alignment) but 270 yards. Have yet to hit my driver that long, lol.

Didn’t keep a score today, just was playing with the new irons. Details in the p770/p790 thread. Not a ton of excitement, it’ll be a fairly brief post.

Hope to get out for 9 this weekend. Using this to say though golf will be different this year for me. Wife and I agreed on only doing 9 hole rounds. This allows me to get a few hours in the morning for myself and her the same in the evenings. Sounds like i can go out every weekend, so ill take that.

  11. Working on cleaning up some fundamental setup items that makes it hard for me to play consistent golf, regardless of swing changes. The positive is that i am gaining better awareness of these issues. Biggest one right now that i have gained better awareness is of ball position. I have been told by Monte for example, that my ball position with an 8/9 iron is too far back. In the past, when I perceive I have moved the ball forward, I have actually just moved my trail foot wider, so from a feet perspective the ball visually looks more forward to me, but in relation to my sternum is not really more forward or minimally more forward. I've learned for me that I need to think about it in relation to my sternum. I tried this at the range with an 8 iron and instead of most balls starting right, my ball flight straightened out. I took a picture of the ball position and sent it to Monte, and he said it was correct. It was shocking how far forward the ball position looks to me visually looking down, but its really not that far forward in relation to sternum. also, trying to determine how working with Monte will work going forward. he sent out an announcement saying that he is going to start focusing more on his own golf game and trying to make it on the Champion's Tour. he said he will be continuing coaching, but i need to see how that works out in terms of his availability in the future.

  13. Amen, Sam! At age 73, and following cancer surgery and a subsequent pair of infections from that surgery, I have lost significant distance with all of my clubs over the past couple years. I was already on a serious distance slide prior to the cancer diagnosis close to 5 years ago, and it continues to worsen. I still play to a handicap index in the 11 to 14 range, and am extremely competitive with players of all ages and handicaps — AS LONG AS I PLAY FROM THE CORRECT TEES FOR MY GAME. Since my average drive goes about 225-230 yards (a really good one might go 245-255, with a bit of wind assistance and firm fairways, but a poor drive could just as easily run-out to 210 yards), I select whatever tees will give a total 18-hole distance of 5,500-5,900 yards. I hit a 7-iron about 142 yards (carry only), and once I have more than 170-175 yards, I have to hit a hybrid. It’s not fun to have to hit a perfect 4-wood (I don’t carry a 3-wood) to reach a par-4 … and that is after hitting a very good drive, so I would rather be playing lots of 330 to 385 yard par-4s, with the occasional 300-yarder and the very rare 400-yarder. Your comments about being realistic regarding a golfer’s AVERAGE distances with each club (not that career-best shot that you hit with that club 2 years ago), and also playing for the occasional long miss — and getting the ball to pin-high with virtually every approach shot — are also spot-on. I almost always take the longer club if I am in-between clubs and I make sure that I easily clear any hazards that are short of the hole, not just barely clear them or force myself to hit an absolutely pure shot to get there. What I consider my “130 yard club” is not the one that I have to flush to hit that distance, but the one that might go 135 (or even 137) on a perfect hit. If I hit it a little fat, I am still going to get 120+ yards out of it, and that’s not likely to leave me with anything worse than a 30-35 foot putt.

  14. Dean Snell of Snell Golf worked for both Titleist and TaylorMade Golf for many years and his name is on the patents for several TaylorMade ball models (TP Red, TP Black, Penta and Lethal), as well as the Titleist ProV1 balls. Snell MTB and MTB-X golf balls are three and four-piece premium balls was cast thermoset Urethane covers and have been very highly rated in a variety of golf ball tests over the last several years. Just do a search and you will find plenty of reviews, test data and articles about Snell golf balls.

Owen didn't want to get up early today so I walked River Heights by myself. Upper 40s and windy. Only saw two others on the course. 48/45 for a 93! My friends, I was killin' it today!! Only two 3 putts and just one triple bogey. Pars on 9 10 and 12 and a few decent birdie looks. Putting was great; even dropped one from 35 feet. Still pulling my irons left but I'm making better contact. Concentrating on not swaying and even the few I chunked still traveled a good way.

  17. You will see many instructors talk about driver off the lead ear or armpit. Irons off the plaquard of the shirt as center and for irons between there and and the logo. Other than referencing driver off the lead heel I don’t recall the last instructor I’ve seen reference ball position in relation to the feet. Glad you are getting this straightened out with Monte. Setting alignment sticks up in a T will help keeping ball position consistent during practice. Most pros do this all the time. Iirc meandmygolf did a video for how to setup for driver, irons and wedges several years back

Thanks @ejgaudette! All very good points. If you get fit locally we can certainly build something using those specs. We should have or be able to get whatever you need from a grip, shaft and specs (loft/lie, swing weight, etc) standpoint. We would just use a head that is a similar model to whatever you hit best. We have 10 iron models at the moment, two hybrids (soon to be three), two wedges (soon to be four), 10 putters, two drivers, etc...so there is likely an option in the Sub 70 lineup similar to any popular option out there at this point. We can always discuss over the phone, by email or through our website chat system as well. We'll do everything we can to get you exactly what you need. If you ever have any questions just let us know. Thank you!

  19. I agree with this - it makes sense logically to me as well. I just wonder about the number of swings that SS calls for both dominant and non-dominant. It doesn’t make sense to me that a 65 year old male would find the greatest benefit from the same program as a 25 year old professional athlete.

  20. ... Just opinions of course but to be fair most Pro's have always played a game that isn't our game, although the divide between us and them is getting much wider so I understand and agree with your point. What concerns me is it seems to be routine these days for Pro's to use driver, fairway wood and wedges almost exclusively on all holes but par 3's. The allure of seeing the best players in the world use every club in their bag is almost gone. Watching Tiger hit a low cut or towering draw with a 6 iron from the middle of the fairway has been replaced with a bombed drive and one of 4 wedges that are in a Pro's bag. This is one of the reasons I enjoy watching the LPGA where they still use every club in their bag.

    Sub70 golf

First off welcome to the forums and even as a 100 shooter the right equipment can definitely help or many will say try some lessons, but then again we have a whole thread with all the new stuff being bought so we get the pull of new shiny stuff. I know the Sub70 team is very responsive and will do a virtual fit over the phone, and if you are able to get on a launch monitor and get some spec that can help. Of course it is not the same as a true fitting experience. There are other options but such as if you get to a store with a Mizuno fitting cart they might have a tool called the shaft optimizer that you take a few swing and it will recommend the best 3 shafts for you. Again you could take that to the Sub70 call. Good luck in your search and be sure share what you find back here.

We missed 2nd place by 2 tenths of a point, and we opened up after prelims almost a full 2 points behind the leaders. So we made up a lot of ground, but the other groups worked hard too. Amazing shows all around.

  30. Been slowly getting back into golf shape following the minor car accident that sidelined me. Have really been working on dialing my stock shot shape back in while still being able to play the fade when I need to. Had a nice 2-under round going before the wheels came off but it was great to be back out there. Fatigue set in and I couldn't hit the shots I wanted to but man, the putter is still on fire. Also got out to the range Sunday morning to try out my new Cobra Big Tour 3 Wood and that thing is a rocket launcher. I found it surprisingly easy to launch off the deck and it goes higher than I expected but still carries out almost to driver distances. Hoping to get on a launch monitor Thursday to get some numbers with it and figure out where it fits in my bag.

  31. Yesterday, I just installed my Superstroke putting grip on my putter. It’s just a homemade setup, so you know … I set up my putter and leveled the putter head with a torpedo level and then installed the grip. Then I checked it the grip with the torpedo level. The thing is, the flat side of the Superstroke grip isn’t exactly flat. At best, it’s marginally flat. I used a digital level to check the head and the grip. As you can see, because the head isn’t well supported, I’m somewhere in the ballpark of being level within one degree. So, is my grip square to the head? I wanna say … yes? But I know if I move the digital level within a fraction of millimeter, it’ll be off by a full degree. You can see that even the end cap has a slight curve to it, which it I take it to mean that there’s a little bit of leeway in getting it right. Really, I can drive myself a little crazy trying to get it spot on. But then I’d remember whenever I’d get lost in trying to achieve perfection a guy I knew used to say to me, “It’s good enough for government work,” which in spirit I take to mean, am I doing anything right now that’ll make an improvement with tangible results? I honestly say, no, not really. After buying one for my shop, I’ve become not-so-big-a-fan of digital levels. I feel like there’s no direct relation between a 0.1 degree reading and whatever it’s sitting on or up against. An analog level offers context. I’m all for machinist squares, calipers and 1-2-3 blocks. Just keep the decimal points out of it for me, please. Besides, I think the regripping turned out fine, and I’m still making six-footers on my putt-out.

My round yesterday was much better than the previous week. This was the first week in Central Virginia I did not have to wear several layers. In fact, toward the end I was too warm! I made some changes to my Driver. I installed a mid-size grip and adjusted the loft. I think it helped. I will keep tabs on it over the next few rounds.

Played 2 tournaments 2 weekend in a row, and came in second both times. The kicker is last week, I played the best I have all year, Driver, Irons, Wedges, Putting all was working. Even with the foot injury. This weekend, was the the worse I have played all year, out of no where I got a case of the left. Everything was a a draw or draw pull. I couldn't get out of it, it was so frustrating. Even my putting was horrible, but somehow I was able to squeak out a decent score. The Eagle on #10 was nice surprise. Stupid golf!

  35. One of the worst starts I could ask for this weekend. Got behind a member driven outing that was not given enough tee times. Waited 15 minutes to tee off and 5 minutes on every tee box. Played a touch over 5 hours for 16 holes. Driver was decent but not many fairways hot. Wedges and chipping were good and putting was fantastic. Irons are bad very bad. Two way kiss between a snap hook and a block fade. Sunday wasn’t much better. We moved quicker. Still didn’t hit many fairways with the driver even though I hit it well. Irons were even worse. I hit 2 greens in the the whole day. Wedges and chipping were ok. I set myself up for a good bit to hit greens and couldn’t capitalize at all. Really wore myself out at the end of the day with how poorly I played. Had I not had a few pars on the back I was thinking about taking a few weeks of to regroup. Thinking my feet and setup had a lot to do with my issues which has been the problem before
