  1. Took a half day to play a local muni and beat the rain that is supposed to last until mid-day Saturday. Shot a penalty free 37/40 for 77 on a wet course. I had a birdie on the almost drivable #17, I was basically chipping. And the shot of the day was an eagle on the short par-5 5th. After almost hitting my drive into the woods, I hit a 4-iron to inches. Worst stretch was 4 bogeys to open the back 9, including 2 3-putts. Putter is trash to start the year, but everything else is going good. I figured out the my new PXG driver a little more yesterday, tweaked my setup. I'm still spraying the ball a bit, but nothing unplayable with it, and my only mishit was a tee shot I wasn't committed on.

  2. This is going to be a new bi-weekly golf column focusing on all the major news and stories around professional golf, golf equipment, and the general golf world. Please send your submissions to me as you think of them throughout the weeks and maybe your submission will be featured in the next column! Stock Up: Great Names on Tour After sluggish Double Bogey, Bogey start, the dart ripping (pun-intended) Thai fan favorite, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, drained his Ace. Shortly followed by Scott Gutschewski, one hopping in his Ace. In this case, do you split the bar tab or does it mean everyone gets doubles? Stock Down: The Shark swimming in the North Sea this July Despite not competing in the last 13 years, Greg Norman made some bold statements claiming that he deserves a special exemption by saying "I am past Champion. I love St. Andrews." The R&A swiftly dunked on him by saying “The entry terms and conditions for The Open stipulate that a champion must be aged 60 or under or have won the championship in the previous 10 years to be exempt from qualifying,. That remains the case for the 150th Open and we have no plans for any additional exemptions.” Looks like the Shark will have to keep swimming. Stock Up: GET TO THE CHOPPA Tiger stans were notified early Thursday that his private plane had departed Jupiter in route to Tulsa to play a practice round at Southern Hills to test his leg. While media was strictly prohibited on site, an Oklahoma news channel got very creative and flew their traffic helicopter over the practice green to watch Tiger and his beautiful Newport putter. Stock Down: Phil's Coffee for Wellness The golf news was dominated by Tiger, but there was a Phil sighting for the first time in a few months at Rancho Santa Fe, and by the looks of it he's been taking a break from his diet and his coffee for wellness program. Boy, oh boy, Phil is looking THICC nowadays, but he's still ripping HELLACIOUS SEEDS. Stock Up: Counting score like a 30 Handicapper After taking an unplayable and having to punch out, Rickie Fowler flushed a wedge from 134 yards to sink his bogey 5. Wait till the end of the video below for a classic Rickie moment. Stock Down: Reading The PGL (Professional Golf League) sent out a lengthy memo to all PGA Tour Members this week. In case you forgot, the PGL was actually the initial contender to the PGA Tour prior to the Saudi backed LIV Golf backed the Brinks truck up and took all the attention. If you want the TLDR on the memo below, the PGL claims that it can build a league worth $2 Billion and is offering the players a 50% share in the league.

  3. Just bought a MacBook Pro. I know it probably doesn’t belong on a golf forum, but I’m excited to get this bad boy going. Besides, I’m going to fill it up with DECADE yardage books and MGS review material anyway, so it’s kinda golf-related!

    How'd you play?

Better than usual! Started off a little shaky, though - sloppy double, messy bogey, blow up triple .. but followed that with two pars, two ok bogeys and .. two really nice pars to finish 9 holes with a +8/44!! Trouble for me today was off the tee - driver is in the shop getting re-shafted and maybe I was just trying too hard with the 3W and had a lotta misses both right and left .. or topped... Did get one really solid one off on the second to last hole (a Par 5). That score includes one 2-chip (very disappointing; was not in that bad of a spot) and two 3-putts (being way too cautious on the downhill first putts) .. otherwise short game was decent and .. pulled off two up & downs - one from a shallow bunker off the front-right corner of the green! Made a few 50 - 100 yd shots on green count, too, so overall starting to feel good about the work I've been putting in and happy with starting to see some progress. Addendum: may be related, or may be entirely coincidental, but .. played a yellow ball today

  5. Just had an excellent range session. Only hit wedges again but made great contact through the whole bucket. Watched a Butch Harmon video last night and decided to put an object (used my deflated SmartBall) next to the ball to encourage a more in to out path, since I noticed I’m getting steeper, and it was a near-instant fix. Hit some tight groups with all the wedges. Frustrated yesterday, encouraged today. Funny game.

BIG NEWS! My wife and I are getting paperwork in place to both buy our new home and sell our current home! We were able to stay in town which is great news because I really didn't want to change my username Still a long way to go before closing... but I know it will go fast! Here's to hoping the rest goes well. I'll have room to swing... indoors!

Played the last two days, moving back a set of tees. Still no roll to speak of but the greens are stupid quick for this time of year. 92 on Wednesday and 95 on Thursday. Couldn't buy a putt either day. Started hooking the ball the last couple of holes on Thursday, so there's a weird development. No golf now until next Friday but I'm doing a fitting with Mizuno on Tuesday in preparation to my trip to TPC Sawgrass in September.

    How'd you play?

Played in a scramble at my course today with @MDGolfHacker We shot a decent 66, that was straight up, not mulligan aided or string or any of those things. I hit the ball horribly off the tee, definitely my worst day with the stealth, but honestly it was just the swing never felt right today. But it was nice weather and I wasn't in the office and we helped a good cause. Funds went to the USO!

  10. Time is really flying; hard to believe we are into May. Most recent focus has been full swing since I have been hitting irons during most wanted testing and it was the last thing I was doing when I had an instructor. I mentioned this in another thread but having a GC Quad available has been instrumental in helping me improve my swing. Full Swing: I have been working on minimizing my in-to-out path and tie strikes. Prior to my swing changes, I was 5-7* in to out. By feeling like I am making a 3/4 swing, my path has become more neutral and is in the 1-3* in to out which is where I want to be. This change along with a couple of other feels has also reduced the toe strikes. Those tweaks are better alignment, feeling like I am staying on my trail foot a little longer to start the downswing with my hands and not my shoulders. The best thing is that I am seeing much better iron shots on the course. Ball flight is much straighter and my big miss the pull hook is still playable when I hit that shot. There are some drawbacks…. I’m have reduced the pull with the Driver but it is now more of a push to push fade. Shots are still playable and solid but something I need to look at a little more. The bigger problem is the hybrid; what was a strength is now a disaster and I am unable to get any height with this club….ball flight is straight but only a few feet off the ground. Short Game/distance wedges: The iron improvements seem to have helped the distance wedges. I am getting solid ball contact, good flight, and good distance control. Short Game/finesse wedges: this has and continues to be a big weakness in my game. I usually get to the course early and work on this aspect of my game. On the range I can be effective and hit good shots but can’t reliably move it to the course. I have rounds where I can hit the ball really well and I have days like yesterday where I miss hit most of them. Prior to yesterdays round I went to the short game area and just dropped balls and was able to hit them to targets. As I type this and think back to the shots I hit poorly, they were the shots that were in the under 20 yard distance. When I get the shaft back to a position that is parallel I seem to be more effective with these shots. I ultimately need to get to the short game area and work on this more but between testing and golf league finding the time is difficult. Short Game/Putting: This might be a situation where you shouldn’t make changes. Decided to give the LAB DF 2.1 a try and I feel like my putting has taken a step backwards. Maybe my expectations were high based on reading peoples reviews but I am struggling with distance control and missing putts that I expect to make or should be making. Again this seems like an I can’t take it to the course type scenario. My indoor and course practice indicate that it performs equal to or better than prior gamers but it doesn’t translate to the course. One of the things I do notice is that during practice I can get the ball rolling end over end but I get a little wobble on the course. Not sure what to do here but will probably stick it out for a little while longer. Technique or mental breakdown? I’m leaning toward mental breakdown since my ongoing problems are mostly in the finesse area and when I am standing over the ball I seem to be thinking and not just doing. Basically trying to be too precise and thinking about getting the ball close.

I'm always happy to report that by the end I was back to the ballpark of my peaks, even if its not pretty getting there. Going to try for the range tomorrow and an actual round sooner than later!

  14. ... unsolicited advice on the range from the local teaching pro trying to drum up business? Case in point, I was on the range working through my normal routine, 7 to 10 shots with each iron starting with my PW and working up through my 4 hybrid before moving on to the big guns. If I am hitting well with a club 7 shots then move on, 10 shots for clubs not hitting well but no more than that. It is my routine and it works for me. First time at this particular range and was stretching and taking a couple of warm up swings when the range "pro" who was trying to drum up business came over and asked if I knew the distances to the markers, told him it was my first time there and I didn't. He then gave me the yardage and even pointed out that with the head wind there were playing about 10 to 15 yards longer. I said thanks and she said if I needed anything just let him know. Cool, thanks. As I started back to warming up he then cam back and gave me his card and offered a discount for lessons if I wanted. Thanks again, I will consider. Now, I continued to get ready and he walked off. I started hitting and was doing pretty well by my standards and sure enough the wind was costing about 10 yards from normal shot. After 8 shots with my PW, I wiped down my club and put it away and got my 9 iron out for my next set. Then I heard, "Your tempo is really good." Thanks, yet again. "BUT.... I noticed that you are not lifting your right foot enough on your follow though. If you lift it further like the pros do, you would be able to gain more consistency and few more yards on your shots. WE could work on that if you want." NOW THAT WAS IN MY HEAD. My 9 iron shots were not very good as I kept trying to lift my right foot. Meanwhile, he then proceeded to stand about 15 yards away from me swishing an alignment rod back and forth talking about tempo to the woman two spots up from me trying to sell her lessons. I had to stop on the range and move over to the putting and chi[ping area to regroup before I finished on the range. Unsolicited advice from strangers is the worse. Trying to sell me a lesson is one thing but giving me a freebie that I did not ask for is not what I want.

Friday wit da Boyz!! Mid 70’s, little humid but overall nice morning. Greens were nice but leaving them a bit long. Driver was so-so, putting OK but irons were happy this morning. Had a @sirchunksalot moment on 8th hole. 9th hole 165-170 3 par into the sun. Hit Tee shot felt a bit off the toe and asked the guys where it went then heard the whap from the palm trees on left side of hole. Found my “Yellow Ball” 30 yards from hole and then promptly “chunked” that sucker about 20’! 1st think I thought was was “chunkster”. Double Bogey the hole! Finished +5.

  16. Good pros here are too busy to drum up new business. We have a teaching pro at my course who I have known for years. He is not an employee of our muni; he has his own business and an agreement with our club. He has a stable of quality junior golfers. Occasionally, he will stop by while I'm worming up with pitch shots to the pitching green and chat. The last time he pointed out several people on our range taking practice swings... "He's going to hit a weak slice"... "He's going to chunk the ball". He's always right. But he never goes up to them and solicits lessons, and he never says anything about my pitch shots... even though he probably could! He posts flyers in the restrooms when he's giving "clinics". Reminds me of a story. Each summer he usually has a month-long clinic for couples... like every Thursday evening for 1-2 hours. He gets good participation. One year he had a clinic on "How to teach your spouse without getting into a fight". My wife and I were playing 9 holes and were coming off #9; the putting green is just on the other side of the cart path from the #9 green. He was giving putting lessons. My wife said to me in a loud voice... "I want a divorce!!!" Everyone looked at us; The pro was laughing!!

  17. I am moving the One Length Forged Tech irons to near the top of my “to try list”… I’ve been waiting for cobra to make the MIM in single length, but I doubt they will… unless you are Bryson. The concept makes a ton of sense to me, and now that they offer the wedges in more than 56 and 60…

Well it's hardly Beethoven's 9th but May marks the 10th anniversary of my time as a member of the MGS forum community. Many of the folks who were here when I started are gone but some remain, looking at you Foz and a few others. I spent a little time as the number one all time poster but also could see that I would be passed up by others and have been. Still nearly 15K posts are a lot. I can't recall all of the tests that I've been a part of but those have been fun though perhaps not for the moderators who have had to deal with my technical ineptness. Lots of people here who are my virtual friends, lots of nice conversations both private and public, I've made some real friends here as well as we have a nice group of MGSer's in the Tampa Bay area. I think my favorite thread that I started was the one about what club you would grab out of your bag to stop a home intruder - it was well before there was any sort of thread hall of fames but it had lots of traction and was tons of fun. Thanks Adam, T (who was very active in the forum when I first started) and BarbaJo for providing a nice place to hang out with other golfers. On a personal note this May is going to be a huge month for me. My Administrative Assistant left a couple of weeks ago, breaking my heart, she will always be a friend but I understand that she wanted to live out in the country and work from home - that doesn't fit in a Church/School setting that is in an urban area. So we are actually getting a professional church worker to fill that role, whose name is, wait of it..... May. But May doesn't come until June which we are having tons of fun with throughout the Day School and Congregational communities. Also work has begun on the house remodel. Taking a Florida home built in 1970 and making it handicap accessible with an eye towards the future is a trip. So my life is in turmoil to such an extent that I couldn't find a single pair of golf shoes (I own 5) last Sunday until I said I will need to buy another one when I get to the course and my Sketchers magically appeared. Fairways and greens forever!

  26. Just got back from 7 days in Myrtle Beach and although I had a lot of bad shots, I had one great shot and several very good ones. On Tuesday, May 3, we played the Legends Heathland course (we played all of the Legends properties, including the Heritage Club and Oyster Bay), and at Heathland I was absolutely on fire, particularly on our first nine, which was actually the back nine. I shot 38 on this nine on my way to a disappointing 84, but it was the 17th hole, a par-3 that plays as long as 217 yards, but was 181 yards from the tees that we played (I think that it was playing quite a bit shorter than that because it's a slightly uphill hole and I played a 7-iron to a back and slightly right pin position. I nuked that 7-iron directly at the pin, and it looked awfully good to all four of us in my foursome (we couldn't see the surface of the green or the lower half of the flagstick from the tee box). When we got to the green, my ball was sitting just 4" right of the cup, and my pitch mark was only about 18" short of the hole. I won both a CTP and a skin on the hole on my way to a total of $175 in winnings that day (a big chunk of the $240 to $260 that I won over the course of five competition rounds). I have never had a hole-in-one, but I now have been inside of 18" four times, three of which were inside of a foot. At 73 years old, I'm hoping that there's still at least one ace in my golfing future, since I have had everything else including an albatross in 1993, and more than three dozen eagles on par 5s and more than a few eagles on par-4 holes. If I can hole-out from the fairway and even from the rough from as far away as 165 yards, there's no reason that I shouldn't have at least one ace by now -- and I almost forgot, I have also hit the flagstick twice on short (less than 300 yard) par 4 holes, both of which resulted in eagles.

  31. ... I came down with a sinus infection Tuesday night and almost walked off the course yesterday. These are much harder to defeat using homeopathic remedies but destroying my gut health with antibiotics is just not an option for me. So of course as soon as the infection dug in, my Forged Tec irons arrived. Sneak preview before I get to play them and post a review. Note: I may not be able to combo as the FTx 4 iron has quite a bit more visual offset than the FT 5 iron but will play them before rushing to any judgements.

  33. That F425 Max 5 wood has a loft of 17.5 plus adjustability. Personally, I prefer using a 4 wood of 16.5 loft, so I'd be looking really hard at the 5 wood. It will be easier to hit off tighter lies than a 3 wood and it's doubtful that you'll lose any significant distance by going with the 5 wood.

  36. With the help of a LOT of luck on #6 today, he's only 3 shots off the lead. The question becomes will he have that blow-up hole that he seems to always have or can he string 4 good rounds together? Looks like he's growing his hair out in a mullet like Cam Smith. I guess he needs to change something up. I wish him more luck like he had today; maybe a few good bounces will give him his confidence back.
