  1. Really good point. As I know you have heard Barbs say many times. “Some people are forum people, some aren’t. Not much you can do to chsnge that” Same thing when we had OEM want to offer a woman’s forum test. There just aren’t any active women members. I tried to recruit one and she seemed promising and she flaked out on a forum test. Same with a women’s college or mini tour player last year. She pretty much blew her testing responsibilities off. People are in or they aren’t.

  2. I feel like it's been the same question for the past 10 years on this forum, How do we make it better? From being on staff for a couple years and now back here as a member I honestly think the answer is nothing. We can add features and different sections all day long. Search for posts and content until you are blue in the face. But at the end of the day it's the members interacting with themselves organically that makes a good forum. I feel like we do a great job of that here and will continue to do so no matter what happens. So from a what can we do perspective there really isn't much. Make sure nobody is an A hole and if we get some some testing opportunties to bring in new members that's great. If not we will all still continue to be a great community and talk about golf. You guys are doing great so just keep it up and we will be just fine.

  3. Wasn't planning on playing today, but the wife just about forced me out this afternoon. There is a course 3 miles from the house that I have never played despite living here almost 3 years. Decided to check it out today and hit the range first. My swing didn't feel completely foreign today so I checked if I could get in and play 9. They got me in, but I was worried how the day was going to go behind a foursome with a new player and in front of a fivesome. The group in front let me play through at the 2nd so that was much appreciated. In terms of my play, some good and bad. Driving was mostly poor, only hit 2 fairways. Stuck myself behind a number of trees, forcing me to hit a number of punch outs. Irons were solid most of the day, but I was painfully reminded twice why I used to consistently lay up on longer par 5s to around 120 instead of getting closer to the green. Two straight holes I left myself in a spot deciding between trying to hit a full 50 wedge or a light PW. I wasn't hitting wedges too well on the range so tried to go with a light PW on both. Hit the distance, but pushed both right and had to deal with the consequences of that. A few highlights were hitting a partial 54 wedge to 2 feet for a par on the toughest hole and making a 30+ foot putt on another hole (let's ignore the fact that it was to save bogey). Considering that when I was playing regularly, my goal was typically to break 90, I'm pretty happy with the 45 for the 9. Back to back doubles early on from two straight 3 putts, then two pars to balance it out. If I had done a better job off the tee, it would have simplified my life a lot, but that's golf. It was enough to give me hope. For the pretty severe drought conditions in the area, course was not in terrible condition.

  5. Golf is a funny…start thinking about new clubs and they start performing well; work to setup a lesson and you swing starts to work. I unfortunately had to find a new instructor; found one that I am going to give a try so my swing worked fairly well yesterday. Still needs some work; I had 2 doubles resulting from a couple of bad shots/funky swings but generally hitting the ball pretty well. Shot 39/40:79. My two main goals for the lessons will be more centered ball contact and better face control. My doubles came on a wide open club face that resulted in a shot pushed way right resulting in a lost ball and a pull hook off the tee that ended up n a spot that took a couple of shots to get out of the woods. I’m really happy with my short game and my confidence keeps building with each round. Contact has been good and now starting to dial in trajectory and getting a little more spin resulting in the ball getting closer to the hole. while the LAB putter has been an area of frustration the last few months I seem to be figuring it out. Spent a lot of time on my ExPutt dialing in distances and starting to figure how much longer my stroke needs to be; basically rebuilding feels. During yesterdays round my distance control was decent and I seemed to perform a little better on those 6-12 footers by getting them too the hole.

  6. Got 9 holes in with a buddy this evening, which was a really encouraging outing after coming back from a week on vacation. Scrapped on the first hole for a bogey, but after that the ball striking was back to pre-vacation form. Had back to back great approaches - first was my approach on a par 4 from ~160 I stuffed to 11 feet and then the next full shot on the par 3 ~180 stuck to 7 feet. Made both putts for back to back birds. I ended up with a string of bogies & a double bogey to finish the round on my course handicap (41, +5), but I was striking it pure as heck and left a couple putts in the jaws and lipped out a few others. Short game left a little to be desired, but that's usually the first thing to go for me after a layoff. Beautiful night on top of it all, can't really ask for much more than that!

  9. I LOVE THIS POST! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences. The process you mentioneed of going from the main blog page to the Forum is exactly what I did when I found the site 7 years ago now, I think. And your comments about relying on the forum reviews more so than the blog piece is what we strive to provide here, and that's why the Fourm Testinng has been such a huge staple of the forum for years. Love hering that you like the smaller items like training and practice aids. I'm sure there will be more of those to come. Glad you're here and thanks for the post!

  11. This I believe is 1000% true. Unfortunately I feel like the new testing section makes it a pain to search for reviews and as others have said I don’t check the reviews often because it feels too out of place and having to change sections can be a pain as much as it is nice. I understand progress but something’s just don’t work and we went from people going to reviews and talking all the time but now not many go to these anymore

  13. Today I was expecting to play like yesterday when I had those four birdies. Nah! Not one birdie today!! But I did have two doubles! Still managed a +4/+4 for an 80. Driver is weak; irons are getting better; and I'm loving my Callaway Epic Max FWs... except for the head covers. All generic Epic head covers with a teeny, tiny number attached. On the par 3 #8 I thought it might be a good distance for my new 9W; for a front pin I hit the ball to the back of the green some 35 yards too long. Grabbed the head cover... it was my 3W!!! Time to look for distinctly different head covers.

  15. Played one of my favorite budget tracks. The Duke down in Maricopa. Shot a decent 77. It was a scramble fest though. Driver wasn't behaving.. I'm sure my driver would say "player wasn't behaving".. (unimportant details).. but GIR and up and downs saved my @$$! Irons, wedges, and putter were all on point and that's a great feeling. I just need a day where all clubs decide to show up and maybe I'll finally shoot par or better.

  16. There can be overlap between the various categories and in how the manufacturer classifies them. The simplest explanation is that from a looks perspective players distance fall between players and game improvement irons. The are designed to look similar to players irons. It provide some of the GI “advantages” Ike more forgiveness and more distance.

  17. Yesterday I played a course that I have not played for almost a month and felt pretty good about it even with a 46/49 95. Lost a couple of balls, had some bad shots, and got myself into some trouble here and there. Wedge play wasn’t great, actually blew right past a couple of greens. Tee shots were making me happy more often than not though. My tee shot on 18 was straight into the fairway and only 3 yards shy of my longest career drive. Had a big smile walking to that one from the tee box. I’ve been working pretty hard to straighten the tee shots out and I am definitely starting to see it pay off.

  21. I had to take a few days and think about my last league round as I am once again frustrated with the state of my game. Three weeks ago I shot a 37 for 9 holes so I'm thinking finally my game is peaking at the right time. Two weeks ago the wheels fell off the proverbial golf cart and I shot a 49. This past week, I'm back to my mediocre golfing shooting a 45. This game is maddening and frustrating! I covered the gamut this round 4 pars, 2 bogeys, 3 doubles. All the work I've put into the short game just didn't shine like it did three weeks ago These couple of weeks were supposed to be a tune up for a 54 hole tournament all played in one day this coming Thursday. Not feeling too confident about playing that tourney with the current state of the game. I don't want to start changing stuff right before the tourney but dang I need to find that magic juice to get my game at a somewhat decent level. <rant off> LOL MDGolfHacker

  22. Players distance irons usually are hollow bodied and have stronger lofts while still maintaining the aesthetics of a players irons (minimal offset, thinner top line, etc) Using Mizuno as an example Mizuno Pro 221 - blade Mizuno Pro 223 - players/players cavity back Mizuno Pro 225 - players distance

  23. Aright Played Sat. with My Son, Grandson, and a family Friend.. Played Echo Falls outside of Seattle. It was wet, heavy drizzle for about 4 holes... Yes it is Western Washington and Yes it does rain.. LOL.. Course was super sloppy.. a few places either take relief from standing water, also several places the ground was so wet it still qualified as standing water but no place else to get relief from.. I shot a 92 46/46, not bad considering conditions, Son shot a 91 51/40.. Errr he beat me but had a amazing back 9... Grandson, drumroll...... Broke 100 for his first time.. shot a 98.. Kept his cool which is something he has had to really work on. he would get mad a at a bad shot and ruin his hole which in turn would blow his round.. he stayed calm and played great.. I had an amazing round with my boys.. got home and my Daughter had made me Chocolate Chip cookies.. Spent some great time with her.. Could not have had a better " Fathers Day"..

  24. Fantastic post, but this part caught my eye and I needed to point something out. On every other golf blog with a forum, when there is a blog post, it almost always ends with a link to a respective forum thread about the club being discussed and it encourages readers to click to continue the discussion in the forum. This almost never happens on MGS HQ. It is like HQ acts as if the forum doesn't even exist.
    6 points
  25. I do the same. But thinking from more of a "non-MGS forum user" perspective, they are going to be more general and then click whatever links they find. In this case, its other blogs, MGS HQ, GolfWRX HQ, GolfWRX forum, THP HQ, THP forums. No MGS forums unless you are more specific in your search (by adding Mygolfspy or mygolfspy forums to your search string)

  26. Good luck, and looking forward to the review! Where are you getting fitted? Any preview based on the back and forth in the build a bag thread on what you're hoping to end up being fit to? I saw you mention both the one-length forged tech and the JPX Tours. I feel really silly for not having looked into Cobra more seriously before my fitting. I'm not to the point where I can handle the Forged Tech but I did end up fitting into the LTDx irons. I fully expected to end up with Taylormade, Callaway or JPX and the Cobra's were far and away my favorite. If I can be so bold, make sure you check out the Cobra LTDx and LTDx LS since you seem to be most open on the driver. I spent the weekend in a YouTube hole watching reviews of the LTDx line (as I await the arrival of my LTDx MAX) and the reviews of those with swing speeds in your neighborhood was overwhelmingly positive. Plus, as a righty you'd be able to pick from their limited edition alternate paint jobs if specific aesthetics are your thing. @chisag picked up the black edition over in the CHA thread and it looks clean.

  30. Well @blackngold_blood was ridiculous and gave me a price too good to pass up. I bought @Sub70 699 pro heads from him. Going to buy the same shafts I have in my current irons and build them and put them into service within the next two weeks and see how I like them. There goes the plan to get fit and then decide afterwards.

  31. The funny thing is Russ, I’m not even mad. It’s just amusing and it’s on me for not thinking that they’d be discussing next years launch around this time. What I will tell myself is newer doesn’t necessarily mean better. I couldn’t believe how much I disliked the G425 line compared to my 400. If anyone does happen to get their paws on this new one I’d love to hear their thoughts.

  32. All great responses to your question Jamie. From my perspective, I came for the testing info (can't even remember what product) and stayed for the friendships. In the 4+ yrs I've been here, I've learned more real life golf technical 'stuff' than any book. I'll continue to stay for not only the friendships but also for the 'real life' testing - both official and non-official. Sad to say I don't put as much emphasis on the HQ testing site because I don't feel it's as 'real life' , plus I can ask questions and get quick responses from the testers. As for what mods can do - keep doing the same. Key aspects of this site is the culture of the membership not criticizing posts along with keeping politics out if the threads. Most importantly - thanks for asking.

  33. Lots of really good points in this thread that I will try not to repeat. Here are some of my thoughts as a relative new-comer to the forum: The "Most Wanted" series is what introduced me to MGS (having realized that other publications were rating new equipment based on aesthetics and demand which seems asinine to me), and from there I found the forum. I was enticed by the testing opportunities but I mostly was looking for a community where I could write and converse with others who share my interests. One positive thing about the relationship between the main site and the forum is that it served as a trickle of water for me before trying to drink from the firehouse of knowledge that is the forum's expertise. A personal example: at the beginning of the year, I wanted to buy a new set of clubs. The main site introduced concepts like game improvement vs plays irons, forgiveness vs distance, and the like. If I were to have just based my purchasing decisions based on the main site and the most wanted posts, I would have blindly purchased a PING G425 MAX driver and Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal irons. However, because of the forum I decided to do a fitting before making a purchase. I tried to be as educated as possible even as a high handicapper because of the forum. I ended up trying both the Ping G425 MAX driver and Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal irons during the fitting and they were awful for me. If it wasn't for the forum, I might have bought a driver and iron set that was a bad fit for me and blamed the MGS Most Wanted series for the poor fit. As an extension of that, one potential minority opinion of mine is that the testing opportunities I'm most interested in aren't of the big OEMs but of the smaller gizmos and gadgets. I'm not as engaged with things like club reviews because they really seem so user specific that even controlling for club speed and handicap seems dubious. The official and unofficial reviews that have helped me make purchasing decisions have been for things like launch monitors, speed training, hitting nets, hitting mats, etc... While individual differences in hitting speed and handicap may yield different benefits, there isn't' a barrier to entry in those products like there are with clubs. Lastly, the biggest thing I think that the forum could improve upon is usability. Oh Mylanta, I would deeply love for this to come to fruition. It is so hard to find reviews even when you know what you're looking for, official or otherwise. More broadly, I think the forum would benefit from a reorganization much like @jlukes mentioned. While that may not be the topical structure I would recommend, I think this is a classic example of why User Experience designers are in such high demand right now. A more intuitive structure to find or browse information may not drive initial engagement, but it certainly would help maintain engagement (much in the same way social media breeds addictive ongoing use, for better or for worse). For driving initial engagement, SEO needs to be a priority if things like the current tests aren't showing up in search results. That's the proverbial "leaving money on the table" if you've got existing manufacturers sponsoring content and even people who are actively looking for that content can't find it.

  34. If I know I'm looking for a specific thread I'll use google and just add "mygolfspy xxxxxxxxxxxxx" for a search. They come up then but you have to add mygolfspy to whatever you are searching for. Google does a better job of finding threads this way and the search within the forum

  35. Google searches are a whole other can of worms. We don't show up on anything ever... It's awful. JS is working with the Dev on a SOE solution so that they do.
    5 points
  36. Yup. Yes they show up in the recent activity stream, but you have to remember that people finding the forum through google searches aren’t going to be signed up and have a custom activity stream; they are going to get to the forum through a web search and then click around and explore. The current forum setup is not conducive to letting potential new members find information easily and intuitively
    5 points
  37. Seconded. I know this has been discussed ad nauseum and there was an initiative from high above or whatever, but the reviews need to be easy to find and browse. Right now, they're not. And they're a huge part of the forum traffic.

  38. As for organization - you can simply look at other forums to see what is working. I believer there should be a section for each main club type Driver Fairways/Hybrids Irons Wedges Putters Balls Accessories (bags, carts, rangefinders etc) I believe ALL discussions about the respective club type should happen within those sub forums - including official and non-official reviews. I want to browse the latest topics about drivers? I go to the Drivers sub forum. There I can find the ongoing reviews, information about the latest releases and basically what everyone else is talking about respective to drivers. There can still be an index/database of official tests that have links to the respective threads. Other sub-forums Fitting questions Lesson/swing tips Post Round Discussions Regional SubForums etc

  39. 100% agreed that the new testing section is awful. in fact, most of the forum organization is bad. From the name of sub forums to a “hall of fame” sub forum that had a collection of random popular threads. It’s a literal chore to browse the forums and I’ve been here for 7 years. Imagine how confused a potential new member is
