2022 PNW Spy Meet-up | Round 1 | Galena Ridge | Kellogg, ID Okay, technically the first 3 rounds of what will be 9 rounds in 10 day chronology isn't the official meet-up but, since attending these is a bit of a drive for me, I like adding some days/rounds to amortize the drive. Today was Galena Ridge. Chris @Thin2winhad planned to meet me here but life happened and he couldn't make it. This is a 9 hole course with championship layout. They have 4 tee boxes and I chose blue/white which plays at 6264 yards. As wet as the course was and with so many uphill landing zones (at my distance off the blue tee), I probably should have just played white on both nines, but what the heck. You'll note the two players walking in the linked video... false advertisement at its best! After hole #1 the electric cart must grunt its way up the side of the mountain, and after 6 (yup, count em, 6) switchbacks, you arrive at hole #2 tees, gaining a few hundred feet in elevation. In fact, after hole #2, it is yet another similar long set of uphill switchbacks to the #3 par 3. This course is a major goat-track with lots of slope. The area has had an exceptionally wet spring and many areas on the fairways and approach areas were soggy. Rollout was pretty much non existent. The course has fantastic views and was alive with wildflower blooms. A good many holes had steep uphill second shots that were blind. I hit a handful of second shots that left with a prayer in tow . The fescue grass is tall, wet and thick. I lost 2 balls in it and was pretty darn sure where they were. I'd have had to take an unplayable even if I found them. The course was pretty empty and I played two balls; 43/45 and 41/44. I had one birdie on the #12 par 3 which was also a "close encounter"... rolling to about 16 inches. I had that holes number, putting all 4 balls on the green and converting the others into pars. Here are images from around the course. Sorry, but except for the "close encounter" I cannot recall which hole each photo is. However, these are Boeing 737 fuselages along I-90 headed into Missoula, MT. These come from the Wichita, KS facility and head to Renton, WA... certainly this has to be a good omen... right? The very unassuming pro shop. Had I not seen the course flyover beforehand, I might have turned around and gone to the hotel . Hole #1 Hole #3 #3 Results Another elevated par 3 Close Encounter on #12,,, almost converted both birdies. Tomorrow I'll be at Palouse Ridge in Pullman, WA.

-1 35 on the back yesterday. 36/40 -> 76 / 75 ESC this morning for 18. Second time in the past week I've come to No. 16 one-under and just fall apart. Pulled my drive left and hit a fairway tree, didn't think anything of it as I heard it hit and wasn't near anything out of bounds. Couldn't find my ball. I let my frustration get to me and just butchered the rest of the hole for an 8. Par, bogey after pulling a wedge from 100 out on No. 18 to finish the round. Driver cost me at minimum four strokes today and I saw flashes of brilliance, including nearly driving the green with a 304-yard poke on No. 13. Someday I will get to under par! I believe this is the first time ever my trending unofficial handicap has dropped below seven. Progress, progress.

  3. Late to this so most of my thoughts have already been covered. I came to the site to read reviews, joined when I saw a testing opportunity, engaged in the forum and was chosen. At this stage I thought you returned the review item once you were finished with the review. I stayed for the community and the information. Being able to read reviews that were relevant to my game is what separates MGS Forum from most other reviews. Unfortunately the forum has definitely gone backwards over the last couple of years for me. I’m not sure if it’s personnel changes or structural changes or a combination of both. The interaction with the moderators seems to have dropped off significantly, it looks like it all falls on APH and semi retired Rob to do the heavy lifting. It seems like the sense of community has diminished since the appointment of a community manager. At least recently there has been a response to direct questions. Obviously lots going on in the background, but the foreground is where people interact. I really like @jlukes suggestion that equipment threads be renamed and reviews be located in the sub sections. For example it’s time to rename “Shiny metal” With the increase in black iron offerings it’s an even more patently ridiculous title. The totally inaccurate social media posts about “like and share to test xxx” are frustrating and don’t do anything to grow the forum, they probably just increase frustration for active members and those who follow the social media instructions and have no chance of being chosen. Perhaps the HQ staff could be shown this https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/49045-2022-how-to-become-a-mgs-forum-tester/page/8/#comment-845545 Hopefully the sense of community can be reinvigorated

After some really rough round with the irons I wanted to play at least the first 9 irons only, but the weather had other ideas, and the round that this produced was amazing. It was very windy and first hole plays right into the wind. I still was committed but hit 2 5 irons and was still just short of the green, which lead to the only bogey on the front nine. I hit 3 greens with a 7 iron including both par 3s, something I have not done all year. Hit 6 of 9 greens on the front even with longer shots in. I will also credit going through the free month of DECADE foundations got me into a much better routine, and I play by myself a lot so talking through the steps was easy. On the back there are more holes into the wind so I have to take some longer clubs to even be able to reach par 4s in two as the wind picked up even a bit more. I kept the momentum going. I holed a long birdie on 14 to get to 1 over on the back. Then traded bogey and birdie at 16 and 17. Came to final hole in the right rough 176 in downwind with water short. Wanted to go easier 7 to not come up short and well mission accomplished. Caught a filer that pitched about 3 feet from the back (about 187) and hopped off the back. Hit a lovely pitch that died right at the start of the down slope to the hole where it then rolled out to 4 ft. Holed the put for my best round ever to par at +2, total 73! Who needs the driver! (I joke of course I have a new shaft coming so next round will be full send all day) Thanks to everyone who has mentioned DECADE as the routine really helped me focus on all my shots have a clear target, visualize, and just pull the trigger. One of my best short, almost dunked this 7 iron on the par 5 8th.

While I usually don't post my rounds on this thread... as they are usually bad enough to live once while playing, let alone re-live them by recounting the mediocre or worse rounds.... but I have to share this one.... Never before have I shot par or better in my 40+ years of golf. May never do it again... but this was a day I will never forget. I had just finished a coaching session with my club pro (we have been working weekly for the past 10 weeks or so), and walked out to the course to play 18... I left my card on his desk after the round with a note of appreciation for helping me achieve something I never thought possible. Subsequent to this I shot rounds of 77, 80, and 79 over the weekend... so still have some work to do on the consistency side of things... but now I know it is possible

Managed to get out for 10 holes last night on a gorgeous summer evening here in the UK. Course was looking fantastic & playing so well, greens are the best they've been so far this year - running so true so putting is going good! Played really well and now starting to feel that I'm getting the feel for the Modus shafts I had the pleasure of testing. Striking my irons very nicely. I've also started thinking more about my approach play and, rather than hitting full wedges, I've been using my wedge matrix to play 1/2 or 3/4 swings and it's working really well. Much more accurate and less chance of a duff chip. 1: Par 2: Bogey 3: Par 4: Par 5: Par 6: Par 7: Bogey 8: Par 9: Bogey 10: Par

  7. 85 on Sunday. 8 pars and a birdie. The double bogeys were killer. I tried to play a hero shot with a 110 yard flop shot and it all went downhill with 4 straight doubles. Got it together on the back for a 40. Finished with 4 straight pars. The day started off promising. But the 4 whole stretch was a killer. I got caught up in a distance battle with a partner when I usually pull 3 wood 2 times this round and I got away from my typical game. It felt good to get back on track.

  9. I honestly don't remember why I came to MGS in the first place; probably equipment related, but back in 2012 there weren't a lot of equipment tests on the forum. I do know that I came to MGS after briefly visiting WRX. I was not into social media (still not except for contact with my swing coach Monte); that has no appeal to me. Like most people that show up on the forum, I read many posts on a number of subjects that I found interesting, and after a short time I got to "know" the members... I felt comfortable here. But it took quite awhile before people interacted with me on a regular basis. I asked questions, but I didn't feel like I had much to contribute to the "regulars". I think that has a lot to do with how newbies feel now. They need to be engaged and encouraged to participate no matter their skill or knowledge levels. We are all different, and sometimes people need a warm welcome to start communicating. The Introduction threads by regions is nice, but after people post there, the interaction generally stops unless members have a connections with the newbie based on what they write. Not sure how to keep their interest up so they don't drop out. People come and go on the forum; people move on to other interests. I made some good friends that haven't posted in years. It happens. Then others come and replace them. I guess it's the nature of a forum... IDK; never belong to one before. One of the first "tests" that I participated in was the SCOR wedge testing, and I wasn't selected!! I had read about SCOR and my golf club had a set of SCOR wedges as demos. I tried them out on the course and ordered a set. During the SCOR forum test, I asked if I could join in and post my thoughts about the clubs; I was happy that I was accepted. I learned a lot from that test, and it led to other forum tests for me. Now I have a bag of clubs that I like, and I don't have an interest in testing anything unless It's something I am considering or am interested in how it might perform for me. If do find something that interests me and I apply but don't get accepted, so be it... I'll probably buy it anyway!! I have to agree with the comments above about how the testing is handled and where the reviews are posted. I don't even look anymore, since the site is too difficult to navigate. I see the posting for testers to apply, but then it's gone and I forget about them. I think that also turns off newbies that might be looking for reviews; IMHO it was much easier when reviewer's posts were part of the Recent feed. Sorry for the ramble... but I hope whatever comes from this endeavor, the forum continues. It's a diversion for me; I like to keep up on y'alls trials and tribulations... golf or otherwise. It's like being in a great big family.

  10. Played 9 for the first time in 4 weeks; just played with my slimmed down practice set = 4H, very old 8i, old PW, old 54 and a new-ish putter. Started off ok first two holes just trying to utilize my new swing plan of "easy and effective" but .. of course .. that only lasted the first four holes before I started trying too hard off the tee and gave myself one OB penalty followed up by one water penalty... Playing this way ends up getting the wedges into play a lot - which is good as I've been spending more time practicing with them vs full swing and want to keep improving those skills - but (see: another "but" already ) after my first fluffed pitch that only went ½ the desired distance I ended up over-hitting everything else after that .. running the ball well past the hole, often to the far fringe of the greens... So even though I left myself a bunch of long tricky first putts my line and speed control were mostly good. Still 3 putted twice, tho, on not too long not too difficult second putts... But there is a very welcome bright spot - that very old 8i, with a very light shaft, seemed to be working just fine for me and I hit several pretty nice golf shots with it!! Fingers crossed that that good stuff can stick with me...

People badmouth it all the time on social and yes, it seems like a lot of common sense but it is so easy to get out of the process and make simple mistakes that just compound themselves. The real negative for me is that when I listen to golf broadcasts I realize how much BS the announcers say

  13. I'm here to win a 2018 odyssey putter, and I'm not leaving until I do. Really. Something about the running jokes, generally welcoming attitude and people seeking to discuss club minutia that might or might not actually matter has kept me coming back. These forums are the only SM I use. They have been a great community and this week will lead me to the 4th annual pnw spy Meet-up. I like the idea of the new testing format, but in practice it just hasn't engaged me. The lack of major OEM tests, is bad. Really bad. But for me, the biggest issue is that HQ has gone off the deep end and the content it produces is the worst golf content on the internet. Since the first ball test, it has gotten progressively worse. People find the forums from the main page, the main page is Charles Barkley double hitch bad.

I had to take a few days and think about my last league round as I am once again frustrated with the state of my game. Three weeks ago I shot a 37 for 9 holes so I'm thinking finally my game is peaking at the right time. Two weeks ago the wheels fell off the proverbial golf cart and I shot a 49. This past week, I'm back to my mediocre golfing shooting a 45. This game is maddening and frustrating! I covered the gamut this round 4 pars, 2 bogeys, 3 doubles. All the work I've put into the short game just didn't shine like it did three weeks ago These couple of weeks were supposed to be a tune up for a 54 hole tournament all played in one day this coming Thursday. Not feeling too confident about playing that tourney with the current state of the game. I don't want to start changing stuff right before the tourney but dang I need to find that magic juice to get my game at a somewhat decent level. <rant off> LOL MDGolfHacker

Felt like I had the course to myself. Shaky start to the round. Was in a greenside bunker in 3 on a par 5. 3 to get of the bunker. Found the greenside bunker on number 2. Got out in 1 . Thought I was in the greenside bunker on number 3 but it ran through. . Overall my driving only got me in real trouble on one hole with an ugly slice and that was on number 9. I had a couple of three putts. I did par one hole so I got that going for me, which is nice.

  16. As a quick recap from the responses here are 2 main takeaways of things I can look to address with the mod team. 1. Site Layout - including names or titles of categories/forums 2. Testing Section For what it is worth the Testing now does show up in Recent Content. We made a slight tweak this year in not as much other then the actual review is put in the review tab. This was to hopefully address what many are saying where they don't see it as much as edits to the review (adding in intros, unboxing, updates and such) don't prompt a bump in RC. Again I think it has come a long way, but I will admit that unless I'm involved in the review (moding and such) I haven't read much or any...

Played one of my favorite budget tracks. The Duke down in Maricopa. Shot a decent 77. It was a scramble fest though. Driver wasn't behaving.. I'm sure my driver would say "player wasn't behaving".. (unimportant details).. but GIR and up and downs saved my @$$! Irons, wedges, and putter were all on point and that's a great feeling. I just need a day where all clubs decide to show up and maybe I'll finally shoot par or better.

  26. Played a practice round on the short course with the range being closed. Played multiple balls but kept score with my first shot always. Shot a 35 i think. Had two birdies, almost chipped in for one and had another par. Irons were really good. Super hybrid off the tee was hit or miss again. Really tempted to take advantage of Callaway's trade in bonus and get a rouge ST LS 3HL (hit the normal 3w quite well at Dick's yesterday with a stiff AV Blue 65 shaft). One of my birdie putts was uphill about 25 ft. Not bad for not hitting the putting green at all.

I'm still having trouble scrubbing the grill afterwards... probably my mistake letting it cool down? I tried scrubbing with half an onion, with crunched up tin foil, metal brush, sprayed with oven cleaner... still open to any good tricks... Or am I just being too picky trying to get rid of the residue?

  32. What brought you to the forum? Honest reviews of equipment. I read reviews for a year or two before I joined the forum. What made you stay? Found some great people to talk about golf with. Still enjoy the equipment reviews (MGS, official testers and unofficial) If testing is more limited in the future (again hopefully not, but if) how would you suggest we grow the forum? The current testing opportunities draw to many (I want a freebie) people. This should be about golf, golfers, and their thoughts and opinions on different subjects. You should publish a standard that is more specific. You must be an active member ( define active ) and be involved for X amount of time ( define X ). After X you qualify to apply to test the smaller items ( balls, putt outs, and similar values ) Upon writing and submitting good reviews and another 6 months you qualify to apply for bigger items to test. I'm all for growing the forum but it needs to be with quality not quantity. Would growth on Social Media help? If yes, what accounts should we look at for the Forum? I'm not a social media fan. What do other forums have which we can use or bring over the MGS Forum which will help grow a productive membership? This could be features, contests, activities or anything. I have not been on others except to check it out and know that I belong here. What is the core identity of MGS Forum in your opinion. For golfers by golfers. Honest reviews and opinions. Golfers that truly care about one another.

  33. Now on Tour: New Titleist Drivers and Fairways CARLSBAD, CA. (June 20, 2022) – The new Titleist TSR drivers – the next generation of the most played drivers on the PGA TOUR – are making their worldwide debut this week at the Travelers Championship. Today’s introduction of the new TSR drivers, together with the new TSR fairway metals, marks the start of the tour seeding and validation process for the upcoming Titleist metalwoods line. Collaborating with the game’s best players throughout the R&D process, and then earning their final validation, is critical to the development of all high-performance Titleist golf equipment. Titleist Tour Representatives will be working with players over the next three days at TPC River Highlands, fitting them into the new TSR models and gathering their performance feedback. Thursday’s opening round will mark the first opportunity for players to game the new TSR metalwoods in competition. Stay tuned to Titleist.com and Titleist's social channels for updates as this process continues over the coming weeks across the worldwide professional tours. TITLEIST DRIVERS ON THE GAME’S BIGGEST STAGES Titleist is the most played driver on the PGA TOUR, as it has been since the 2018-19 season, with more players gaming TSi driver models than any other brand since their introduction on tour in September 2020. Titleist is the PGA TOUR’s winningest driver since the debut of TSi (25 victories). Two weeks ago, Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship using a TSi3 driver – the most popular driver model on the PGA TOUR - in addition to several professional tours around the world. Titleist drivers are the top choice at the game’s biggest amateur championships.Titleist was the most played driver at the recent NCAA Men’s Championship and St. Andrews Links Trophy (where both winners also played a TSi driver), as well as last year’s U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur championships. 40. Is there prestige in winning the Travelers this week? Or the JD, or Rocket Mortgage? I dont think the field at JD this year is going to be much more enticing, if at all, then the LIV event. I saw an interesting stat this morning that 9 of the last 21 major winners have gone to LIV, that's 40%. That's not a small number. I also think it's interesting seeing a lot of people bash the no cut approach yet the WGC's have typically been no cut events, haven't they? Breed said on the radio this morning that there is a players only meeting today and another meeting amongst players/administration?. I think Monahan is starting to feel the pressure and a calculated response is coming tomorrow.

But he was a great football star and the students held a rally and demanded the dean give him a diploma anyway. They were so insistent that the dean agreed if Bubba could answer one question correctly he would give him a diploma. The one question test was held in the auditorium and all the students packed the place. It was standing room only. The dean was on the stage and told him to come up. The dean had the diploma in his hand and said, "Sir, if you can answer this question correctly I'll give you your diploma." Bubba said he was ready and the dean asked him the question. "Sir," he said, "How much is three times seven?" Bubba looked up at the ceiling and the down at his shoes, just pondering the question. The Alabama students began chanting, "Graduate him anyway! Graduate him anyway!" Then Bubba held up his hand and the auditorium became silent. He said, "I think I know the answer. Three times seven is twenty-one." A hush fell over the auditorium and the Alabama students began another chant. "Give him another chance! Give him another chance!"

Aright Played Sat. with My Son, Grandson, and a family Friend.. Played Echo Falls outside of Seattle. It was wet, heavy drizzle for about 4 holes... Yes it is Western Washington and Yes it does rain.. LOL.. Course was super sloppy.. a few places either take relief from standing water, also several places the ground was so wet it still qualified as standing water but no place else to get relief from.. I shot a 92 46/46, not bad considering conditions, Son shot a 91 51/40.. Errr he beat me but had a amazing back 9... Grandson, drumroll...... Broke 100 for his first time.. shot a 98.. Kept his cool which is something he has had to really work on. he would get mad a at a bad shot and ruin his hole which in turn would blow his round.. he stayed calm and played great.. I had an amazing round with my boys.. got home and my Daughter had made me Chocolate Chip cookies.. Spent some great time with her.. Could not have had a better " Fathers Day"..

Golf is a funny…start thinking about new clubs and they start performing well; work to setup a lesson and you swing starts to work. I unfortunately had to find a new instructor; found one that I am going to give a try so my swing worked fairly well yesterday. Still needs some work; I had 2 doubles resulting from a couple of bad shots/funky swings but generally hitting the ball pretty well. Shot 39/40:79. My two main goals for the lessons will be more centered ball contact and better face control. My doubles came on a wide open club face that resulted in a shot pushed way right resulting in a lost ball and a pull hook off the tee that ended up n a spot that took a couple of shots to get out of the woods. I’m really happy with my short game and my confidence keeps building with each round. Contact has been good and now starting to dial in trajectory and getting a little more spin resulting in the ball getting closer to the hole. while the LAB putter has been an area of frustration the last few months I seem to be figuring it out. Spent a lot of time on my ExPutt dialing in distances and starting to figure how much longer my stroke needs to be; basically rebuilding feels. During yesterdays round my distance control was decent and I seemed to perform a little better on those 6-12 footers by getting them too the hole.

  47. As for organization - you can simply look at other forums to see what is working. I believer there should be a section for each main club type Driver Fairways/Hybrids Irons Wedges Putters Balls Accessories (bags, carts, rangefinders etc) I believe ALL discussions about the respective club type should happen within those sub forums - including official and non-official reviews. I want to browse the latest topics about drivers? I go to the Drivers sub forum. There I can find the ongoing reviews, information about the latest releases and basically what everyone else is talking about respective to drivers. There can still be an index/database of official tests that have links to the respective threads. Other sub-forums Fitting questions Lesson/swing tips Post Round Discussions Regional SubForums etc

  48. Rex Hoggard reporting developments from the player/commissioner meeting this morning. 3-event team series in Fall (Europe, Asia, Middle East), with top 50 from FedEx led by captains chosen from PIP. Other players from Playoffs go into Fall Series for card. No more reach-around...sorry, wraparound schedule beginning in 2023.
