There are many many reasons to not go down that road. MGS blog has done so much for this forum including it's creation that even with this hiccup we will find ways to better the forum with the support from HQ. They continue to do a lot for the forum. All of us as members would love to see some more activity from the staff there here and we have requested that. There are significant costs to running the forum and all the other things surrounding it. It may not be perfect, but the community we have here is stellar and together we can continue to strive to make the forum a better place if not just on community reputation alone.

Mods don't get enough credit IMO. TBH, this thread has opened my eyes to a lot of things I rarely considered on the forum. While it may or may not have taken the direction they intended, it was necessary to have this discussion.

... You guys are a little more active here and I love that because I have experienced mods that post little but have enormous ego's or a Hall Monitor mentality. Kinda like Umps that when they do their job well are mostly unnoticed and some even interact, talking with coaches during the game like we are all a part of the same thing. Too many act like dictators and never attempt a relationship with anyone on the field. I was coaching my sons team in the first round of the playoffs and we had an actual minor league ump on the bases helping out because of the heavy playoff schedule of games. Play at third and a quick throw to second got the trail runner by a good 2 feet but the ump called him safe and the stands went ballistic. I called time and when I went out to talk to him he held up his hand and said "Before you start, I may have missed that call coach. My vision was a little blocked and I could not see the tag but had to make a call and from where I was standing behind 3rd it looked like he may have made it back to the bag but it was a 50-50 call and I may have made the wrong one." I never heard that kind of honesty from an ump and was very appreciative. I told him thanks for the honesty and I was going to put up a little fight for the parents in the stands but understood he could not change the call. He smiled and said "well, have at me then". So I did a little acting and then went back to the dugout. He would have made a good Mod.

Agreed big time. A standalone forum without a "front end" blog and no relationships with OEMs and other golf companies is basically just r/golf on reddit.

Please don’t take this as pontificating, but I’m actually able to comment from a personal perspective about turning down Saudi money. About 25 years ago I was offered huge money to work in Saudi Arabia. About 50% more than I was earning at the time, but tax free, accommodation covered, return flights to Australia and multiple flights to Europe. They even were going to find a solid job for my wife. I turned it down, as I personally didn’t want to put my wife in a position where she was basically going to be locked up in the expat compound unless she went outside with me or another male, along with other issues around the treatment of women. Would my life be easier financially now if I’d taken the job? Maybe, but I made an informed decision. I wonder how many of those who have signed with LIV have actually had a look at the big picture or thought only of them selves (obviously it’s they’re right to do that) I just wish that they’d drop the “growing the game” bullsh1t, be honest, it’s about the cash. Steph Curry is doing more to grow the game of golf than most of these guys.

See this happen so often in corporate america. Somebody new comes in and they want to change things to put their mark on things. No voice of customer was done. No surveys done prior to the changes to see what people actually wanted. It was a selfish "look at me" change that nobody wanted or asked for

It was a hot one today in AR, somewhere in the mid 90s. I drank a lot of water and 2 gatorades to stay hydrated. Shot a 39 on the front with one birdie, then made the turn. Things were going okay, but I was already 3 over through 4 holes on the back. Then I chili dip a wedge shot and double 15. 16 is a 145 yard par 3 and I stuck it about 10 feet to the left and burned the edge for a tap in par, then went birdie, birdie (both with 8 foot putts (give or take)) on the final 2 holes for another 39 and an overall 78 for the day. Ladies Member-Guest starts tomorrow, so I won't be playing until Saturday when I play a nearby muni. Supposed to be over 100 Saturday, but our tee time is 7:24, so we should be through before the highs for the day are reached. Summer is definitely here!!!!

Thanks for the post and comments. I see from your join date of July last year, you probably aren't aware of this. Just about every test we do, we get a wide mix of handicaps from scratch to 20+ (unless the OEM specifically puts something out there that is designed for the better player--like with the PING Blueprint that @Shankster tested a few years ago, PING specifically wanted a low single digit player. It wouldn't have served anyone's purpose to have those in the hand of a 20 handicap. I do like the ideas of different gadgets to see if they improve, and we have done that as well, looked for testers that had never used a GPS system before and had them test one to see how it changed affected their games. Shoes, we did that with SQAIRZ last year and put their claims of improved clubhead speed to test. Check out those reviews, Tom did a particually fantastic job backing up his findings with data. We have also discussed the hope/need to get soem training aids in that can be used year round. Again, did that with ExPutt two years ago that was a huge hit. Hopefully our testing opportunties will improve and get back to what they once were, if not this year then perhaps next year.

I don't know who you play with, but all of my partners and the many strangers I have been paired up simply pull their rangefinder, shoot the distance to the pin and are done in 10 seconds or less. If we are on the tee it only takes one rangefinder. Playing unfamiliar courses I need to know how far to the water or bunker IF I think they are in play. When playing a familiar course and the pin is tucked over a bunker, I need that information but shoot them both at the same time. ... It takes much longer to step off yardage. One of the big problems I find with yardage markers is if the pin is middle left and I am 10yds left of the marker that is a much smaller number than if I am 10yds right of the marker and it is easy to be a half club off or more when a rangefinder gives me exact yardage.

I realize that the thread contains “No Politics” in the title but the sole reason for LIV Golf is politics. I think we must remain cognizant of the fact this tour exists not because the Saudis love the game or wish to advance the game inasmuch as the game helps improve their image on the world stage. The league is not financially viable other than the fact that those who run it have access to an incredible amount of wealth to back it and sponsorships and broadcasting deals are not required to fund the appearance fees and prize pools. The golfers certainly have the right to play where they wish but the PGA Tour also has the right to to place rules around it’s membership. I do wish the players though were more honest about why they are joining LIV, just say they are paying me a ton of money to work less hours under less pressure to perform. It’s insulting when they say, it’s growing the game and “I’ve seen women eating in restaurants so the things are improving in Saudi Arabia”. I won’t conflate doing business with Saudi Arabia due to national security interests with doing business with Saudi Arabia to play a game.

... The way I look at it is rangefinders and GPS units finally allowed Am's to play like the Pro's. They have yardage books for every course they play and the caddie walks off yardage, not the player. ... I played a blue collar muni course where my playing pard was the GM so I played there quite a bit. One hole in particular always gave me trouble. Walking off yardages I constantly came up short, although other holes were also a problem. When I got my first rangefinder I found the yardages from the 150 markers were off and that one hole was off by 15 yds. ... But once you go down the road of "aspect of skill has been lost" almost every advance in golf would be the same. Play a round of golf with a persimmon driver, Wilson MB's with heavy steel shafts and a balata ball and I think using a rangefinder/gps pales in comparison.

Irons on fire today. 5 birdies, but unfortunately 5 bogies. 3 kick ins. so I found and played one of those TM green stripe balls for a few holes- have to admit, the color is stupid. Maybe use a color that contrasts the grass..I spent way too much time looking for the ball in the middle of the fairway. Then in the rough? Jeepers…Makes no sense…

Playing Last Sat. on a course I've played a few times before so I knew the course, but not enough to know my distances to specific places, lay-up areas, hazards, ect.. Midway through the round my range finder ( Bushnell yardage Pro, about 15 yrs old.) dies. I hope it's just the battery, but not sure yet.. I felt lost. I had to "eyeball" the distances (NO distances on sprinkler heads or other markers on the course), which got me thinking are we too reliant on our technology, Electronics (no i do not want to go back to wound balls and hickory sticks No offense @BIG STU)? We go to the course with a rangefinder, GPS, and our PHONES.. As hectic as it was trying to choose clubs and shots.. I kinda enjoyed going through the process of analyzing the shot, figuring out the yardage, what shot to hit ect... Have we as golfers lost some of the gamesmanship that is golf due to technology and the drive to get lower scores while losing the skill to beat the course as the game was designed?? I hope this all makes sense, in my head it does but then again it might sound like the ramblings of a 5 yr old to everyone else.. Thanks..

... Marketing is no more BS than any other product under Capitalism. The purpose of Marketing/Advertising is to get your attention. It is then up to you, the prospective buyer to do their own research whether that is demoing products or looking online for reviews. I believe this is true for all levels. The Cobra LTDx Max may produce longer and more accurate drives for a high index player that tends to slice more than fade and the LTDx LS may produce less spin and faster ball speeds for the low index player. Then again, they may not. I just don't read or see any adds I find misleading or BS. Hyped up? Absolutely. That said, whether or not it will improve your game or if it does, by how much is certainly open for skepticism. Say the new, better, most awesome, best yet driver increases forgiveness by 4%. Is that even noticeable for the majority of people that play golf? Same for distance and accuracy, how much is improvement enough over your club to actually buy the product? ... Fwiw lets break down this marketing from Cobra: "The LTDx driver is the ultimate distance machine. Using PWR-COR Technology we were able to achieve zero CG and 5200 MOI for the first time to create a driver unlike any other. One that combines low spin, fast ball speed, and extreme forgiveness to deliver the Longest Total Distance." The LTDx driver is the ultimate distance machine. A bunch of nothing that sounds good. "Ultimate distance" doesn't even claim longest. Using PWR-COR Technology we were able to achieve zero CG and 5200 MOI for the first time to create a driver unlike any other. Zero CG/5200 MOI are technically true so no fault with this as it doesn't even say how it will effect you let alone if it will improve your driving. And of course it is a driver "unlike any other" but so is every driver every oem sells. One that combines low spin, fast ball speed, and extreme forgiveness to deliver the Longest Total Distance. Statistically it does produce low spin, fast ball speed and extreme forgiveness. Now Longest Total Distance is really pushing the envelope imo as compared to what? Their own previous drivers? Other Oem drivers? But since most every driver sold makes a similar claim you can't call out Cobra on this one point. ... I get many think tricking consumers with BS is the bailiwick of the evil golf companies but I have talked to many engineers for most every OEM and they are very serious about producing an improved product that helps golfers of all levels. Sales of course are a different animal and to say they care more about money than golfers would not get an argument from me. But most OEMs have demo days at clubs, ranges and golf stores to try their clubs and compare to what you are playing and if anyone chooses not take advantage of these or most golf stores that have launch monitors and buy a club based on Marketing, they deserve whatever they get.

We have spent a lot of time discussing LIV and everything that goes along with it. However does anybody think the Tour is handling this correctly?? From what I have seen they continue to fall all over themselves. They announced new purses great, how long would this have taken if not for LIV? They have increased fees for every Monday qualifier, if you want to grow the game help these guys don't hurt them. They have adjusted the schedule, which they needed to do, but have done so while increasing the pressure and difficulty to everyone ranked 71 and lower. Not to mention the fact that the KFT guys probably have a harder road to the tour than ever before (I could be wrong on this one but it is my interpretation). Yes they have helped their stars but now the road is harder to become a star and that would seem be a detriment to the long term health.

There's a few things the club can do to make sure there's a successful caddy program. I'll just bullet point things to keep it simple. And there's no particular order to these as I'm just writing them as they pop into my head. Also the course I caddied at had a long standing caddy program. My dad actually caddied at the same course in the 50s & 60s. -Have a proper caddy shack for guys to hang out in. Sat & Sun morning we all congregated at the first tee because everyone got a loop on weekend mornings. But on slower weekday's there needs to be somewhere out of sight of the members. Our shack was in the woods off the 15h hole which was just down the hill from the clubhouse. We also had our own separate parking lot there. -Make sure there's a place for guys to get a snack/drink and use the bathroom. Obviously not allowed in the clubhouse, but we could use the patio/halfway house bathroom and at least get a hot dog and nuts/chips/cookies from the patio grill. The course only charged us $1 per item cash. -The pros need to support the program as much as the members. Caddies take away from their cart revenue, but if the pro is seen using a caddy, members will follow suit. With that being said, encourage all the membership to use caddies. Outside of the invitational & club champ, I very rarely caddied for the women. But when I did I actually liked it. They didn't hit the ball far enough to lose it, I didn't have to hustle to forecaddy on most holes, and they took the game less seriously so they would joke more with me. -Have defined roles between the caddies and the other club staff. Our veteran caddies would get a little testy if bag boys or valets would try to come down to the yard on their off days. There is politics in the caddy yard, you gotta prove yourself to the other guys. Not just on the course working with them, but also being a decent guy to hang out with while waiting for a loop. You can get a bit of an education in the yard if you have good people. -Carry over days. The caddy master didn't institute this till my last few years, but it was a great help during the week. So on weekends, our master made sure the top guys got out first. But during the week, it was first come, first out. We knew most loops wouldn't be till after lunch starting around 1, but guys would start showing up at 10ish to get their name on the top of the list. But let's say you got there a little late on a Wednesday and missed the loop. Your name would go to the top of the list for Thursday. It was nice to know that you could take a little more time, or sleep in, or go golf yourself, show up around noon, and be guaranteed a loop that day. It really balanced everything and kept loops equal. -Don't do caddy grades. Our club tried this and got rid of it after one season. A bunch of guys got graded lower than they thought because "we can't have everyone be AA caddies". So now their stuck making less per bag than other guys and it's kind of arbitrary or unfair. That and members don't really pay attention to it. -Make sure members know how to use caddies and work with them. If I had one guy in the fairway and another in the woods, it would drive me crazy when the fairway guy would hit his second shot but not let me hand him his wedge or putter and then went and stood next to the green with his hands on his hips waiting for me while I search for balls and/or help the other player take 3 more shots to get out of jail and up to the green. And if there's a longer walk on a forecaddy hole, let the kid get out there before you tee off. Don't complain about lost balls when you don't give the caddy a chance to see your tee shots. -A pet peeve of mine was when I was the only caddy in the foursome, the other two guys on a cart. And they expected me to rake their traps, clean their balls, get their yardages etc. And if I didn't do that all the time they would complain to the caddy master or not tip me. #1 I'm not carrying your bag you're not my responsibility. #2 I'm still tending the flag, watching your drives, giving you yardages on par 3s or when I can. And yea, I would take care of your trap if I had a chance. Don't refuse a caddy then expect me to have time to take care of you as well. Cart chasing a 4some was different, then you were expected to take care of everyone. But that wasn't as hard because I wasn't carrying bags. You just had to stay in front of the group.

So on Twitter, I congratulated Sir Nick Faldo on his retirement from announcing and wished him well on what the future holds for him and his wife. He gave it a “Like”. So yeah, I’m kind of a big deal on golf Twitter now.

I just had my first loop with a caddy. It had some Pros and Cons. I was given a caddy that had senior stitched on his bib which I assume meant he passed what ever tests he had to take or had enough rounds under his belt. Our foresome was riding carts and the caddy gave us tips on where to place shots, gave us yardage, lay up spots, ran ahead and tracked balls, and found them in the rough for you. The hard part was watching someone else rake the traps for you and fix your divots. This was all great but! I was better at reading putts. I listened twice and it cost me two strokes. At that point I checked the confirmation ask off my list. The next issue was layup yardage. Once he gave me a distance to trouble and said hit your 150 club. I did and it went into the pond. Should have played 140. The second time he said hit 200 yards off the tee. I hit my 5 wood 200 yards. So I hit it and it wound up in deep stuff at the end of the fairway just before the creek. So from then on I deducted 10 yards from all his suggestions and was fine. He was a great kid but I think someone more seasoned would have been better considering it was my first time with a caddy. I think one caddy for four people might not be good for some caddies. You can't really learn your player not to mention 4 players at the same time. Maybe some might be better than others but who knows your game better than you do. For a high end course I never played it was good to have a caddy. Course knowledge is great to have at your disposal. Got to hear some stories about the course and what the tour players did from certain locations which was nice.

I thought it was the cobra. He tricked me. But damn, I couldn’t pass it up. Fell off the bumper while I was videoing my swing. Shattered… imagine that.

Alright, so today was about as much fun as I’ve had at a driving range setting in my life. Brandon at Knighthawk Golf Center is a stand up dude. Irons tested: Titleist CB, T100, and T100s. Mizuno 223 (I couldn’t stand the JPX at address) Taylormade CB Hybrids tested: PING G425 2 Titleist TSi3 Drivers: Titleist TSi4 Callaway Rogue ST Triple D After some serious conversation about my preferences and whatnot, this is what he recommended that I try. Warmed up with my clubs for a few minutes while he did a quick regrip. When he walked up he said “swing speed”… So after we got the warm ups out of the way he handed me the Mizuno 223, just like the JPX it made me cross eyed. I hit it well but it felt dead and the top line looked like a SGI. Yuck. Moved into the Titleist CB, and I would have Stopped right here. I was hitting it so good that I didn’t want to try anything else. Average with the 7 iron was around 170 I believe with nearly 8k on the backspin with several different shafts. Around 120’ apex.. 50°+ land angle Tried the T100 next, nearly identical numbers to the CB. Tried the T100s next. I compared them side to side with my T100s’, and they look to have figured out a way to hide the offset, it’s just a better looking club. 181 average 7 iron with around 5500-5800 spin, 110’ apex and 49° land angle average. He said that this can’t be beat for distance and stopping power. The shaft we ended up going to with these 3 models was the Project X LZ 6.5. Which is weird because it was the lowest launching and most controlled out of the lot. I had these in the Blueprints and absolutely hated them, but in 6.0. Moved into the Taylormade CB, beautiful club. Top line like a hybrid though… bye bye. Iron specs ended up being, T100s Standard length, 2 degrees flat, PX LZ 6.5 shafts. 2 flat really calmed down my lefts. So beautiful in flight… Hybrids: first rip with the G425 set 1° flat in 17° of loft was 255 carry, 278 total… absolute bomb. This is where the dropping the 3 wood conversation began. While he was inside getting the drivers ready, I hit my 3 wood just to see what trackman had to say… 266 carry 291 overall. The TSi3 hybrid was pretty good, but the PING G425 won this battle handily. Specs: 1° flat, Tensi Orange X Driver: well, you already know the outcome, but I was not expecting it. My PXG could not muster over 262 carry today. I was hitting it as best I could too. Around 3800+ spin. Next up was the TSi4… what an odd duck. Weird shaped. 270 carry was the best this saw, and around 2500 spin, really high too. The Rouge ST was an absolute monster. I could not believe it. It sounds perfect. Looks great and it instantly gained 20 yards of carry. Only an idiot would hold my grudge any longer. So rather than average 270-280 with roll out, I’ll be landing there… crazy…. By this time I was super tired, it was 88° and humid. So I hit my two wedges, and a full swipe with the 48° produced around 13,000 backspin, and the 54° was right behind it at 12,500 at 113 yards. He was good with the gapping between the PW, 48, and 54 but said I could add another if I wanted to. So that’s where my 52, 56 came in. Since I’m dropping the 3 wood. Brandon recommend that I go with the same shaft in the wedges, and make them all the same length as my PW. We talked about and even tried to lower my ball flight with equipment, but he said he would kill to have the stopping power that I do. Everything is around 100-120’ in the air. So… when I get to Oregon I will be ordering the rest of the clubs. Bag will look like: Driver: Callaway Rogue ST Triple D Tensi White X 75g (STD) setting 9° Hy: PING G425 2 hybrid Tensi Orange X 85g & maybe the 3… Irons: T100s Standard length 2° flat, Project X LZ 6.5 3-PW Wedges: SM9 48°, 52°, 56° 2° Project X LZ 6.5 (F, F, M grinds) all at PW length. Cannot recommended a proper fitting enough. I’ve been to DSG and used their launch monitor… it is a waste of time. Everything had a 50 yard slice.

Had a decent round Monday with an 87 at Tierra Verde in Arlington, TX. It's a pretty tight track (off the tee) and after racking up a number of penalty strokes the previous week, I decided to formulate a gameplan and put it on paper to take to the course. I cut the penalty strokes in half and only one of those was a result of strategy - the rest were simply execution errors (either target selection or just a bad swing). I went from 29% fairways last week to 57% fairways this week - only missed one fairway on the back nine. GIR was down slightly from 39% to 33% which was disappointing, but I wasn't off by much most of the time. My buddies and I got paired with a high school kid who was there to practice for a two-day tournament which started yesterday (currently T2 at -1). If this kid isn't on tour one day I'll be surprised. His game was perhaps the best I've seen in any playing partner and I have a few friends who have spent time on developmental tours. It was a fun day watching him absolutely stripe it and share some strategy with him since he had never played the course before. We were hitting very different clubs, but it was further validation that doing my homework was the right move. A nice bonus was that simply watching how he held the club and moved it through the turf seemed to rub off on me. I found myself staying down through the shot better and hitting flight windows I'm not used to seeing. Final highlight of the round was achieving a 4.50 scoring average on the par fives - birdied two, parred two. I never seem to get as much out of a par five as I know I should and this ties my previous best from earlier in the season when I had three birdies and a bogey at a different course.

Trust me in most of my travels I have seen a lot of guys like that. I knew a guy who played the Vegas shootouts that had a old Northwestern putter like you would have found in beginner sets at K-Mart in the 60s. Had the original half rotted grip taped on with electrical tape. Famous Poker Player/ golf hustler Doyle Brunson remarked that the guy had won enough money with that putter that he could have bought the Northwestern Golf Company CASH from the Ronasco Brothers. Yep never judge a book by it's cover

I thought your numbers indicated that the top of the bag was pretty good. Anything can be a good idea as long as their is a purpose and benefit to your game.

After some time to digest. I can’t believe I thought the Taylormade P7CB was chunky. I really wanted to like this iron. And… I’m going to call Brandon and ask what his thoughts about going with the 620CB over the T100S are. Max height was similar, but with the more traditional lofts, I wouldn’t have to mess around with the Vokey 48° wedge, and it would open the top of the bag to the hotter faced irons (T100)s. Studpid idea?

Could be exactly what the LIV tour wants. I have always thought that the long term success of the LIV will fall to the up and comers. As the PGA tour potentially pushes them aside with these big money top 50 events the LIV tour can potentially poach the future of the PGA tour with smaller guaranteed salaries.

I agree Sluggo... I like the ball, but I have never spent so much time looking for my ball IN THE FAIRWAY!

Back in the 60's I'd hear the old guys in the locker room talk about the "new technology" of sprinkler head yardages being unfair and taking the talent of seeing the shot and feeling the proper yardage and listening to your caddie out of the game. All these choppers slowing down the round by walking off steps from a sprinkler head only to top a shot and have it roll into the burn! And the stinkin' golf carts that were taking over and eliminating the caddie and walking the course would surely be the ruination of the game. Just Kidding!

Looked back at an online lesson video and went to the range to do the drills. Minimalist approach hitting just the PW and 7 iron and it went great!!! Set-up my swing station to work on the club exiting on a similar plane as on the downswing, put balls in sets of five, and then proceeded to hit the first 3 in the station, the 4th outside of the station but still a practice shot, then the 5th was hit by emulating a shot on-course. Ahhh. So good!

After getting too frustrated with my 14 divider Cobra bag which was too tight for my new GP Plus 4 midsize grips, got this 4 divider Titleist stand bag in grey.. Looked at a lot of bags, but liked the style of his one. The straps seemed comfortable too. it’s lighter than my old bag and the club chatter is actually not too bad. I loved the extra touch of the interior pockets lined with a relief contour map of a golf course. Nice touch. I have a question for you Titleist stand bag owners… What do you put into the magnetic easy access pocket which sits close to the bottom half of the bag? Couldn’t find any good answers online, it’s an unzippered pocket and it’s close to the bottom of the bag with magnetic close, so it’s confusing to me…. Range finder? Putter head cover?

No offense taken----- If the technical digital stuff helps your game and enhances your fun so be it---- I guess when I was playing comp etc I had my version of it especially mapping out a course except I scribbled in a notebook------ And LOL I do not play Hickory all that much but I do play 40 and 50 year old equipment----- Everyones goals and fun factors are different----- Me since I am retired I do not take golf seriously anymore--- That does not go to say I do not have a competive streak and will try hard to beat someone especially in the weekly Shootout. With my physical injuries and having to revamp my swing 180* I have had my challenges. I have went from a bomb and go find it hit it again guy to a more methodical plotting guy--- But heck it is all fun to me and I feel blessed to still be able to attempt to play this game even if I am a shadow of my former self golf wise. Yes I am blessed that I am not in a wheelchair. I have always marched to the beaat of my own drum in golf and life. I do my own thing and have absolutely no problem with someone else doing theirs
