    How'd you play?

Got out early yesterday at Windmill and shot an 82 with 29 putts. Played in 2 hours 35 minutes, walking. Back out there again the next 3 days. I hit 2 shots on 16 to test two 3 hybrids. The Sub70 393X 3 is on the right and the Maltby KE4 HDI is on the left. You could throw a towel over them.

  2. Had 2 disaster holes today in my round of 9 holes. The first and the ninth. Everything in between was good for me. The highlight was no 3 putts. My Ping G30 hybrid must have been tipped off that I was looking at other hybrids. It performed wonderfully giving me nice high fades. The driver continues to give me fits after being a strength less than a month ago. Oh well, I suppose that’s golf.

    How'd you play?

I've had a weird pinched nerve thing in my neck going on for the last month that I've been nursing. (I think the final push to take as many swings with the Modus 115s before the final review did me in) Golf swing doesn't seem to hurt it, but the better half has told me to keep it mellow for the last few weeks. Finally got back out to the range last week and in anticipation of my first 18 in three weeks tomorrow I hopped out for a twilight 9. Zero pressure, lots of fun, confident, and only 2 over par (38). Very boring GIR two putt golf with no good birdie looks on all the pars and very reasonable up and down chances that turned into two putts on the bogies. If this is what boring golf scores look like I would like to be boring every time. Wish me luck in the morning.

    How'd you play?

It was golf league night and I got to watch some good golf….not necessarily by me but I didn’t play too badly. My course handicap was 3 which was my score; my playing partner was 1 over with a 4 handicap. Our opponents were -3 with a -1 handicap and -2 with a 2 handicap. There were 11 birdies in our group over the 9 holes; unfortunately I only had one of them. one bad tee shot that required a punch out; pitched to about 8 feet but left the par putt short. Bogeys came after an approach shot that was terribly short, and missing a couple of mid range putts. 6 fairways, only 3 greens but 3 more were just in the fringe, and 15 putts. The information from my lesson appear to be taking hold as most of my shots were pretty good. A few could have been better but I am happy with the progress.

    How'd you play?

We played the front nine at River Heights yesterday with our friend Mark and then the two of us played the back nine this morning. I'd gotten a couple sleeves of OnCore Avants that I wanted to try out so I took a sleeve yesterday and promptly lost all three balls on hole 2 . Between that hole and getting stuck in the trap on seven, I felt like I had a poor round but I wound up with a +12 48 which is pretty much how I've been playing recently. I was consistently hitting on the heel with my driver which sapped some power but overall I played okay and had two pars. Today pulled out a second sleeve and this time never lost a ball. This time I was more center of the driver face but I was skying the ball, again sapping some power. Had several putts that were online but just short including a double breaker on 11 from over 50 feet away that stopped half a revolution away from dropping. No pars but only two doubles for a +11 47. Young lad Owen carded a 39; he was really feeling it. He's going to break 80 soon!

  7. Really got after it over the weekend. 12 fairways and 11 GIR with 36 putts. The bad 5 3 putts. Mostly all due to the fact of poor positioning from the pin. 41/41 for 82 on the day. I had a chance to get a birdie in 18 but I over though my approach shot and caught it to soft landing it in the creek. Only ball lost on the day.. overall things are trending to the point where I’m making mistakes but still playing really good

  8. Update on my chipping. While I am still a long ways from being a pro, I am making progress with having more successful chips than not. This because of the many helpful tips and links to vedios that were posted on this forum. I need to continue practicing and learn how to swing with different clubs from different lies but I am starting to get some confidence as to how to attempt different situations.

  9. Saw an interesting comment from Pat Perez this AM on one of my feeds. He stated his reason for joining the LIV was not because of the money but was to make a living and spend time with his family. He talked about missing the birth of his son because of the playoffs last year. Now I somewhat know PP and he was always the party guy but got married and settled down. At his age I could see where the birth of his first child was very important to him as it should be. At his age he is in the twilight of his career and I can see where he would want the money for his family. I think he did win a few PGA events but with getting older and all the hot shot young guys coming up I can see where he is coming from money wise. He is brutally honest and sometimes it rubs people wrong but that is his decision. I can see with the up front money and maybe playing a year or 2 his family's future should be good. IMHO he will probably make more money in the next year or so than he did his whole PGA Tour career

  10. The Motocaddy testing continues. My concern was the Motocaddy would not do well on the hills on my course. That concern has been put to rest. My next concern is that I make it up the hills. First round I made it 7 holes. But it was 94 degrees. The second round scheduled it rained. Then I was traveling for work a bit. This coming weekend should be a good test. I have 4 days off. Johnny is charged and ready. The belt clip is fixed and I'm ready. I've been hitting up the elliptical to build up stamina. Now back on topic. This forum has been great for me. It was never about the testing but more the camaraderie and the interest we all have in common which is golf. It doesn’t matter if you use current equipment or vintage equipment like Stu. The game is the same. Testing is a bonus and should be treated as such. Be grateful for any opportunity that pops up, but don't always expect there to be one. This site had guided me in several purchases. If it wasn't for the honest and detailed reviews by both MGS and Forum testers I would still be buying off the rack stuff that was not right for me. Just because I did not know better. OEM's have a long list of people wanting to test and write reviews on equipment. You basically have to get a request in early and get on a waiting list. Then they only have a certain budget or allotment of equipment to give out. Then they look at exposure. Where will they get most readers. Who is taking their advertisement money and reviewing. Guess who gets priority! It is whatit is. It's business.

    How'd you play?

Played another course in the village that I had not previously played. I struggled somewhat today. Just wasn't hitting the ball as well as I normally play. The course was in decent shape and a nice track with really great finishing holes, although the greens were rather slow and I heard the traps were awful (I didn't find myself in any bunkers, so I'll have to take their word for it). Shot an 85, but it felt like I played worse.

  14. Probably way off topic, but It helps in understanding a persons perspective. How much money does someone need to have to secure a family’s livelihood? I can look at general household wealth and income statistics all day but it doesn’t tell me how much I need to support my family and live out my life. Granted someone that has made $26 million should appear to be secure but we don’t know that persons lifestyle or how they spend that money. If we look at trends withlottery winners, they are often broke after a few years because if how they spent their money. We can also find people that have a net worth of less than $100k and they believe they have enough to secure their families lifestyle. like you, I can provide an opinion and I personally believe that $26 million in career earnings should be enough, but we have no knowledge of his actual financial standing.

  16. Late one afternoon, the Air Force folks out at Area 51 were very surprised to see a Cessna landing at their “secret” base. They immediately impounded the aircraft and hauled the pilot into an interrogation room. The pilot’s story was that he took off from Vegas, got lost, and spotted the Base just as he was about to run out of fuel. The Air Force started a full FBI background check on the pilot and held him overnight during the investigation. By the next day, they were finally convinced that the pilot really was lost and wasn’t a spy. They gassed up his airplane, gave him a terrifying “you-did-not-see-a-base” briefing, complete with threats of spending the rest of his life in prison, told him Vegas was that-a-way on such-and-such a heading, and sent him on his way. The day after that though, to the total disbelief of the Air Force, the same Cessna showed up again. Once again, the MP’s surrounded the plane… only this time there were two people in the plane. The same pilot jumped out and said, “Do anything you want to me, but my wife is in the plane and you have to tell her where I was last night!”

  17. IMO, he would be very successful, but not at the level that he was. Tiger learned how to play the new style of golf at a very young age. Today most golfers play the calculated mathematical emotionless style of golf that Tiger employed successfully. This is why we see so many young players winning and being successful. What Tiger did possess that many players fail at was that he could maintain the mental focus and follow the plan for 72 holes ignoring what the other players were doing.

  19. And something else that has not been brought up. I will step here lightly as not to violate forum rules. Before all of this LIV thing the PGA Tour did cancel a awards party or something like that at a course owned by a certain party. Then they canceled their event at a certain course in Florida owned by a certain fellow who used to reside in DC but now resides in Florida. Far as I am concerned that is all together a political move and a knee jerk reaction. And now that certain owner has 2 LIV events scheduled at 2 of his courses. WHEEEW hope I tiptoed through the Tulips ok on that one if not I guess you guys will hear from me in a month or so

  20. No your not listening to the players complaints about the business model, they want changes but can't get them so some have gone elsewhere. Now the PGA is changing the business model, is it soon enough not to lose too many players which leaves the PGA with no tour and therefore no business model....

  21. I do not know if we will ever see a generational player like Jack or Tiger again. I have learned from watching the Jr golfers around my course it is a totally different ball game now from when I came up and even 20 years ago ( Tiger Era) These kids in High School and even younger have so many different stipulated comps now besides school golf teams. I can remember growing up we had one Junior golf event in the county and that was the County Junior event in the summer. We had the City Am too and you had to be at least 14 to attempt to qualify for it. I was the youngest at the time to do it even though I never won any of the Junior events. Now days they have all kinds of Jr Tours with kids as young as 11 or 12. Time they come out of college they are well accoustmed to the pressures of competetion. And now days we know so much more on the dynamics of the golf swing and the training reflects that. The fields are so deep now with so many talented players that I doubt we will ever see another Jack or Tiger just come out and kick butt for years. Still it takes work and talent and now days we have that in droves.

  22. ... Again this is like saying "Other than that Mrs Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?" If you take away ... Not considering ... Other than this ... are all sentence starters that many won't get past. If this had been Canada for instance we would be having a different discussion but no rational organizers without another agenda would throw this kind of obscene money at players. And the thing is it is pretty clear so either this is a non starter for someone or it isn't. Not really any middle ground. I have been around too long not to know people draw their own moral lines in the sand, and expecting or trying to convince them to move it is almost always a futile attempt.

  24. I could be wrong here but am betting/guessing that you will check off the first Big Bird before leaving the "Still Aceless Thread". You (and Kiren) absolutely smoke golf balls. At those hitting distances, you'll have many attempts. When your putt on #18 at Appletree left the putter, I thought you had it. Just getting to that green in two shots from the blue tees was pretty impressive. For our readers, #18 has a seriously legit elevated green... I should know... I walked up that mountain .

  33. They do but not to tours that are trying to steal their players or take over their business. So yes it’s an all or nothing. The PGA tour is protecting these best interests. While the John Deere doesn’t have your interest, the host city, businesses, the community benefit from the added attention and personnel staying, eating, possibly shopping there for the week and there is also ticket sales.
    3 points
  34. No. That’s a serious logic leap there. They already grant players exemptions to go play in other tournaments. They could have done the same thing with these. It shouldn’t need to be an all or nothing deal, at least I don’t think so. I know that some tournaments draw stronger fields than others but looking at the John Deere this weekend does not get my interest. While the LIV field has not had a lot of recent wins, they are routinely in the featured/marquee groups week in and week out. Now they are gone forever. As a business owner, there are times where the saying “don’t cut off your nose to spite your face” is applicable. I FEEL like this is what the PGA has done. Instead of saying “This sucks but nothing we do will keep them from defecting. Let’s just make the best of a bad situation and move on.” To be clear, I’m not addressing the sports washing issue. I’m just saying that a lot of big names that people love to watch (myself included) aren’t welcome on the tour anymore and that sucks for the tour and the fans. Just because you aren’t challenging for wins doesn’t mean people aren’t interested in watching them play. My opinion is the PGA overreacted. Feel free to disagree, that’s okay with me.

  35. After many years of living happily ever after, Cinderella is now old. The prince has passed, the servants have left, and she sits alone with only her cat for company. Suddenly there was a flash, and a woman appeared. Cinderella immediately recognized that it was her fiary godmother! "My dear, I've some to check up on you! How did it all work out with the prince?" Cinderella told her, "Oh, it was a wonderful life! The prince was a fabulous and loving husband, and life was awesome." The fairy godmother replied, "But you seem sad now." "Well, the prince is gone, and while he was a great spouse, he was a lousy financial planner, and now I'm old and quite poor. I live alone with only my cat, and I can't even feed him properly." The fairy godmother answered, Ah, but you were kind and generous to others, so I have the power to give you three new wishes. What would you like?" Cinderella was gobsmacked! "Well, could you make me rich again?" With a flash, the room was filled floor to ceiling with gold. "Oh my goodness, such a treasure! But I'm an old lady, I can't spend this. Could you also make me young again?" With another flash, Cinderella was transformed back into her young prime, slim and gorgeous. Now that she was young again, she realized she was feeling things she hadn't felt in a while, and said she'd like the prince back. "Oh no, my dear, I can't raise the dead! You have to wish for something else." Cinderella thought about it, and looked down at her cat, and said, "Ginger has always been my loving companion. Can you turn my cat into a man?" With another flash the cat was transformed into an extremely handsome fine specimen of a man. At that the fairy godmother said, "Enjoy your new life, I an off!", and disapearred as quickly as she had come. Cinderella blinked the bright flashes out of her eyes, and gazed at her new beau. He leaned over with wide eyes, and whispered in her ear, "Now I bet you wish you hadn't cut my nuts off!"

    Chipping from 50 yrds in

I'm with @blackngold_blood on using one club for most all short shots around the green, except I use my 60º high bounce wedge... even from tight lies. As you read these replies, you notice there are many ways to play these approach shots. I used to be terrible from any distance. My first instructor wanted me to use the method several have stated above; multiple clubs depending on amount of fly vs roll. While that certainly works for a lot of people, it didn't work for me. My instructor defined a chip as any shot where the hands lead the club head through the strike and the lead wrist did not break though the shot... typical of a bump and run shot. He was a good pro (missed a spot in US Open qualifying during a playoff) and he could use that shot from 50 yards out. He defined a pitch shot as a miniature full swing where there is a full release of the club. My issue was that I couldn't do both; no matter how much I practiced, I always let the club head pass my hands. I can do a chip if I'm very close to the green and don't have to put much energy into the strike. The lie of the ball, the speed of the greens, and type of grass also dictate what type of shot to use and the club I choose. I play the ball forward in my stance and use the bounce of my wedge to keep from the leading edge from digging. With practice I can judge the amount of backswing and followthrough with my 60º needed to fly the ball to a spot on the green that I know will allow the ball to roll out a predictable distance. I can fly the ball high, medium and low to hit whatever spot on the green I choose. I find practicing those different shots quite fun. On our greens that technique with any club longer than gap wedge will likely be off the back of the green. I will sometimes use my 54º wedge from the rough and use a bunker-like shot. Experiment with the many techniques for these shots and find which works best for you. Don't fight a technique because that's what someone says you should do. There are many ways to get the ball on the green and close to the hole.

  37. Good commentary - this is why it feels like Pat's comments simply lacked perspective. He framed it that he only has 2 options: Join LIV or continue to play 30+ events a year. When we all know there are a number of other options for him to live the lifestyle he wants (needs?).

  40. With the PNW meet-up happenings and travel, I haven't really been paying too much attention to pro golf news. I did see all the FTx chat bubbles race across my laptop with the news on who had WD from the JDC, and who has WD from the PGA Tour completely... nutzballs! As I said in another thread, all this churn could be a real boost to some of the mid-pack players; who are by default moving up in the PGA Tour field rankings. I wonder if television/streaming viewership drops off with the LIV event going on in Portland. I'll be watching both to start and, depending on JDC coverage on the weekend, likely just watching the Pumpkin Ridge event. Having done these PGA Tour threads for the past couple of years, I will say that I never realized how much BIG $$$ gets pumped into a plethora of charities all across the nation as a result of their events.

  41. The solution to this issue is to have the PGA reverse course and not ban the players from playing in LIV. Put your pride aside and move on.
    2 points
  42. This is a great point but I think golf might be unique where to be a top PGA tour player, you have to be really good for a LONG time. Every once in awhile you get generational talent but for the most part it takes mastering the mental game to be good. In my opinion, this is why Monday Qs, KFT, and mini tours do an excellent job at putting the best people on tour. With all of its flaws, the PGA tour is the best in pro sports at rewarding players simple on top performance. Which is one of the better arguments against LIV.

    How'd you play?

Played my weekly round yesterday due to a family function commitment today. Got paired up with a father and son, son about 20 years old outfitted in full University of Michigan colors. I let them tee off first all day, kept same order off all tees. (Mistake number 1). I played well, only missed 2 fairways off the tee, I left and the other a push right. Temperature was 90 with high humidity, and course was backed up and playing very slow. Only greens missed were all long?????????? I don't know if it was because they would hit green and bounce off, ground was pretty firm or if I didn't factor in wind conditions. (Mistake number 2). Unfortunately, 2 putted every green, more due to green speed being a tad bit slower than normal for this course. (Mistake number 3). As I mentioned a while ago, been demoing a couple driver heads and shafts, played this round with the Titleist TSi2 9 degree head and Ventus TR 5S shaft. Still not convinced that the added height the TR shaft gives over the Ventus Black is correct for me. High flight window, but not much roll out. Best shots with this shaft compared to the Black are similar distance wise, maybe 5 yards difference total, but much different flight to get there. Shot 40 / 42 and the round took just under 6 hours to complete.
