    How'd you play?

Played a little extra this week as my in-laws wanted to go out twice and I had some vacation time to burn: 41/38 -> 79 40 37/37 -> 74 38/39 -> 77 I have started to hit my irons really, really well as the practice I put in with changes from my last lesson is starting to pay off. Got a very fortuitous bounce off a tree that kept a ball in bounds and led to a birdie during today's 77, but otherwise it was a very solid round. My touch was off on the greens and I had three three-putts for bogies that I wish I could remove, but no doubles at all. I came to No. 18 yesterday at even par and ended up doubling it trying too hard for a birdie or par. Oh well! Estimated handicap has dropped below six for the first time ever and my anti-cap is now down to 11.1. That's a huge improvement for me this year.

Congratulations @Golfspy_CG2 on the ace. As @DiscipleofPenicksaid above, we got out early at Windmill this morning. Teed off about 7am. Reality came calling to me today with a 47/41 88. What a kick in the goolies! I found my limit and should have only played 3 times not 4 because I was running out of puff.

  4. Played this morning at @MattF home course. Game's been off so I moved up to the whites today. Shot an 80, with 34 putts, 2 doubles, no birds. Started off par-par but holes 3-10 were a train wreck. I was only +2 for the rest of the round though so something started to click.

    How'd you play?

League night, a pretty pedestrian 43, 3 pars, 6 bogeys, hit some absolute bombs, but could make anything worth anything on the greens. Ah well, that's life. Learned I'm statistically the 2nd best player in this league on scoring average, so I now have a goal for the second half of the year. Also in a half season team best ball with handicap finished T8 at -2, but lost on the paid place for 8th on a card draw. Interesting to note... in that it's interesting, the two twosomes who played by themselves with not playing partners finished 1st and 2nd.

It was super dusty this afternoon when the Shanksfam departed our beach house. It is rough… when the roots finally start to take hold, it’s time for a transplant. As my kids are getting older, it makes it harder and harder for me to justify doing this anymore. Super dusty, and I don’t even like Maryland. This one stings a little. We will be on the road Saturday morning to see our parents for a week before we are off to Oregon… I might be radio silent for a few days.

  7. I took the Motocaddy M7 for a spin around the course today. You can read about that in the test thread. So today turned out to be old Tom day. No mysterious duck hooks, no fat or thin iron shots. I didn't spend much time at the beach. Just one time I had to put my sand game into action. Long fairway finding drives, hitting greens in regulation. So just boring golf. Two bogies and two birdies to come out even par for the day. I would have liked a few more one putts but I'm not going to complain about even par especially after the last three rounds that had the mysterious duck hooks on a few holes. I've had comments before from other golfers " It must be boring playing golf like that" if only it was like that all the time!

... It just amazes me how selfish some people are. You had a HIO 3 years ago and with soooooo many golfers suffering without one, you just grab a 2nd one like a thief in the night?!? I would add I think it is much harder to make 2 birdies on the same hole because you have to make the putt, something you were evidently afraid to attempt with your avalanche of HIO's.

Lol! I hear you. One of the guys in the group is a very good player 3-4 handicap and has been playing 35 years and has never had one. He gave me a hard time about the first one. i thought the fact he had to witness yesterdays would be like salt in the wound . But he said he thinks that means he’s that much closer to his, since he was in the group. I did tell him when I had mine 3 years ago. One of the guys in the same group got one the following week. So I’m saying there’s a chance! You’ll get yours I’m sure. Those Forged Tec irons are so good..you’re bound too!

    How'd you play?

So I'd like to say "Well" as in, "I played well" but it was more like "well ... wtf was that?!?!?!?" Could not hit a tee shot even if you'd held a gun to my head, and then let myself get demoralized about that so had trouble making solid second .. and third .. shots... Wasn't all horrible, though - had a nice up & down on the first hole (to save bogey), and then again on the next hole (another bogey). But after that things got even messier and even the wedges started arguing and fighting with me The one consistent good thing was putting, happily enough -- two 1 putts on those first two holes with the up & downs, then several good 2 putts with tap-in seconds, one more 1 putt on a Par 3 (another up & down for another bogey), and had one 3 putt where I just totally misread the first putt and the ball broke _away_ from the hole and kept running running running further away .. but hit a good second with good speed but ball tracked straight instead of breaking slightly right to left... So 16 putts for 9 holes .. happy with that .. and we won't talk about the total gross score!

Pretty Good Day despite the final score of 90 Had a Hole In One...My 2nd one, the first coming 3 years ago. I guess they are going to come to me late in life...ha Details are the brand new PXG Gen 5 0311 XP 9 iron from 129, it was a back pin so unfortunately I did see it drop, but I saw it take a bounce and land right near the flag stick. Funny thing, the two ohter guys in the group, both hit it to about 6 feet and would have had closest to the pins, if not for this. Both made birdie, so 3 of us played the hole in -4, pretty good! I had two bad holes ruin what would have been my lowest round of the year, and technically throw in a third one, If Ihad just made bogey on each of those I would have shot an 82 which would hae tied my best ever, which was also the round with my first Hole in One. Instead shot a somewhat disappointing 90 consideirn the way I hit it for 15 holes.

  20. I truly wish I had any further update on anything to come. Potentially a tech device in the coming weeks, but unconfirmed. Considering we had been trending in the 26+ opportunities per season for several years this is a massive drop off. We knew to expect a dip in opportunities with the change, but were still led to believe it would be around 20. I'll admit I'm a little at a loss. We may be having a member Q&A (live on zoom) with HQ members based around Most Wanted Testing, however I don't believe member testing is on the schedule for that.. As a mod team we have expressed concerns over and over and over. Unfortunately they haven't yielded any change. Hopefully the missed opportunity is seen and changes are made to next season or the later half of this season. For me all I can really say is I'm sorry...

  21. ... Having played both I prefer the Maxfli Tour balls so got that out of the way up front. If I were comparing $25 TP5 practice balls to $35 Maxfli balls and I played 3 or more times a week I would be tempted to play the TP5 Practice balls and save $10 a dozen. But considering the Maxfli balls are $30 when buying 2 dozen or $26 when buying 4 dozen the Maxfli balls become a real bargain. I would consider performance very similar and for me the TP5 spins a little more and is a hair shorter off the tee. On very windy days I play the TP5X which spins less than the Maxfli Tour.

    How'd you play?

I participated in one of those about 20 years aog, they had a qualifer in the parking lot of a big mall, but had a fairly small green set up a 150 yard target and if you made one of your 5 shots you got in the finals. I actually made 3 of the 5. The finals were held at a private club about two weeks later, they took us all out to the fairway of the 9th hole set at 165 yards and we all got one swing for 1 Million Dollars. I missed the green by about 20 yards, I stayed and watched. Al ltodl there were about 50 qualifiers. Nobody came close, insurance money was safe. I think we got a sleeve of balls a the qualifier for making it...ha

It surprised my fellow member because he knows my pedigree. LOL craziest one I ever saw was a qualifier for a Million Dollar one. A school had taken out the insurance policy and had one. One of the gym teachers had never hit a golf ball in his life. I think on the qualifier you could buy a small bucket for like $15 or so and you could hit all the buckets you purchased. The flag was at like 150 or so. About midway through his 2nd bucket he worm burned one up there with a Driver (smeesh) got him qualified. If I remember correctly you got 5 balls for the HIO for a Million. He topped 3 and hit the next two about 30 yards. I think he did get $500 for making the one in the qualifier. No one made the million. And no I could not participate because at the time I had been playing the minis and was assistant at that course

  24. And anyone who does not belive your last sentence should have seen Rory last week. Even though he is in top physical shape when he started melting down you could tell he was physically and mentally broke down. Trust me I know having played golf for a living several different times of my life I know the stress and toll on the mind and body. One of the reasons I do not sweat things too much now. LOL this just reminded me my last Mini Tour event was a co sanctioned event 12 years ago this weekend. I was semi retired from comp then and got talked into coming out of retirement. Ended up winning the Pro division in my age group. Went ahead and basically retired after that and concentrated on my trucking to put back enough money to retire on. Have not played any comps or big money matches since then. And the decision worked basically well for me except the accident part. I did retire pre accident at 62 and was working part time 2 days a week 16 hrs total when I got hurt on the job. Yeah I do not expect a lot from my golf these days because I practice and play when I want to and I am happy

  25. It’s huge for the player. It’s less wear ad tear on the body. On Sunday fly to a city somewhere in the country, check into a hotel, find transportation, pick a hard course and play 18 holes on Monday, then practice for a couple hours, play another 9-18 on Tuesday then practice some more, play 18 more on Wednesday in a pro am, then practice some more, play 18 holes thur through Sunday and practice after each round. Then do it again the next week and the week after that. One of those weeks you get a Monday where you have to do a corporate sponsor event and hold a clinic then play a hole with every person at the event. Rinse and repeat for some 5,6,7 weeks in a row or for those who are grinding it out barely making the cut it missing most cuts and they have to do it 3-4 months at a time. This will take its toll on you mentally and physically. As for the spectator they would get to see a smaller field filled with the biggest names in the sport. While most of these guys are past their prime and don’t have much chance of winning on the pga tour they still can play the game at a high level and that is fun to watch. For the game that is tbd but it’s still tournament golf at the professional level and it’s not bad thing, it’s different and time will tell if fans like 54 hole tournaments vs 72, not to mention there’s no cut so you get to see these guys play every round

  29. ... I often wonder how left brain and right brain tendencies play into this topic. I am not very analytical and much more right brain artistic. Golf is all about feel for me and while I respect analytical types that have methods for distances like a clock or body position system, etc I would be lost. I find so many variables from wind to pin placements to elevation that dictate how I hit a particular shot from inside 100 yds. How strong is the wind blowing when faced with a 20-70 yd shot into a 15? 20? 25 mph wind? Standing behind the shot I might choose a gw, pw, 9i or even an 8i depending on how strong the wind feels to me and whether it is uphill or downhill. This will also dictate how low I hit the ball and with how much energy. And every day is different so the shot I hit yesterday may be different today based on how I feel that particular round. I have no idea how far back I take my backswing but my guess is it is pretty consistent for a similar length in similar conditions. I have a very strong short game and I may mirror a clock method but purely by feel, not by positions.

  33. ... Just to add some experience. I prefer the MGI ZIP for one reason. Gyroscope. With my M7 I had to constantly re-direct the cart as it tends to wander back and forth although usually in one direction like curving to the right or left. There are adjustments you can make but they always seems to over correct and I never got it to track straight. This is really my only complaint as my M7 was durable and reliable for everything other than moving in a straight line. The ZIP never wanders or more appropriately if it hits a slope and moves a little one way or the other, it self corrects after a few yards and gets back on course. It is impossible to over state how much this matters and I would easily call it a night and day difference because set the speed and keep it about 6 feet in front of you and you never have to think about it til you get to your ball and hit stop. One other nice feature of the ZIP's remote is there are 2 buttons that turn the unit on and off. When you stop you press a red bottom and the other buttons no longer work. When ready to start again you press a green Botton and the rest of the buttons are functional again. This stops you from a "pocket" command like Tom mentioned. ... As far as the companies, I find MGI arrogant and not very helpful if you have any problem related to weather. Get caught in a rain storm and the electronics cease to work? Too bad and you are on your own for repairs. I had a problem with the battery on my M7 after getting caught in a sudden downpour and Mottocaddy replaced it after taking it to the repair center in Aurora IL. My ZIP got wet after crashing in a lake when some high school kids demoing it lost control. I have probably helped MGI sell 20-40 units with reviews and word of mouth. I contacted them and asked for a replacement at PUD pricing since I had done so much for the company. Should have been a no brainer but they sent me a thanks for being "a loyal customer and proud owner" but nothing they could do for me. After contacting several others in the company the response was "here is a link to some refurbished ZIPs and you can pay full price. Since I already paid full price and owned the MGI Quad and the ZIP that was crashed by others, I felt selling me one for their cost was an ideal solution. Their final response was basically "Not what you want to hear but we will do nothing for you and don't care how many units you have helped us sell through reviews and word of mouth". And it was as much how they responded than what they said as they were just very condescending. ... The above established, I bought a new ZIP when Costco had them on sale for $300 off because as much as I dislike MGI the company, if you keep your ZIP out of the rain or around any water it is the best remote cart on the market. I have had 6 different remote carts and most went out of business. If I were getting a non remote model, I would definitely go with Mottocaddy as I owned the S1 non remote and never had any issues with it.

  34. Another round in today. Summary: Hills. No problem what so ever climbing our mountainous course. The Motocaddy M7 has more torque than you could imagine. I survived the walk as well (88 degrees, sunny, and humid). Ease of set up and operation. Very easy. Tipping. I put this through some rough uneven terrain. And ran it through on speed level 5 and it did not tip over. I found the steepest side of one of our hills and it did not tip over backwards. The wheelie bar with the wheel did its job well. Things I have to get used to. The clip connection to the back of the remotes orientation is reverse of what I instinctively think it should be. So when mounted on your belt its upside down. I instinctively walk to the cart and bag after a shot instead of having it come to me or meet me somewhere. That's just a change that will take a while to become ingrained. Now for the Motocaddy bag. Let me start by saying that I am a 14 way divider bag fan. However the compartment layout of the 14 slots is not user friendly. They tried to reduce the footprint by staggering the club slots. This makes it tougher to get clubs in and out. Especially on an angle. It also has me looking more for the club I want. I like the rows type of design more. I have a Bag Boy Chiller. I'll still work with it for awhile and see if I get used to it. This is a waterproof bag so there is one zipper pull on the left side of each pocket. By design to keep water out. Normally other bags will have one on each side and I kept them at the top. Easy enough to get used to but worth mentioning.

  36. If it is so huge, would they play for 25% less money to avoid the 4th round? Do you really believe that not playing on Sunday, rather than the massive money payouts, is the reason they are joining LIV? You have no idea what I've played or competed or at what levels.

  37. You can see it in pros all the time when they have played 3-4 events in a row. They usually don’t have the same energy at the end of that last tournament. You can see it in their swing, their movement around the course, they face usually shows the stress and fatigue. Some even talk about it in post round interviews.

  38. One round a week is a huge relief on them. That’s 23 rounds of golf, that’s about 150 miles less stress on the body and extra time to recover. The fact you don’t understand how much stress is out on the body and mind from playing tournament golf isn’t surprising? You accept what other say. Its easy to see you have never played anything above recreational sports if that.

  40. The guys that have played courses multiple times don’t play as many holes, but they also just don’t play a straight 9 holes like malt amateurs. They are on the course playing multiple shots each hole, spending lots of time on the greens putting to different hole locations from different sides of the hole, hitting chips, pitches and bunker shots to those different hole locations. Then they spend hours practicing. Guys new in tour are going to spend more time on the course learning the course, taking notes, asking questions of the vets. Tour life is hard on the body and mind. i would suggest anyone who hasn’t gone to a tour event on the practice days do so and watch how they prepare. It’s an experience in of itself

  43. We all have our ways of doing things and I have always been outside the box of conventional thinking. Even though my old man was a teacher I am self taught because me and him did not get along. Early on I developed a rope hook and I attribute that to me swinging fast and hard plus the clubs did not have enough weight and shaft for me. My old man because he was a cheap SOB got me a set of Wilson Patty Berg Irons with aluminum shafts. He was on staff with Wilson at the time. I was about 13 then. By the time I was 14 I had gotten strong quick. With those light clubs I swung fast and hard. A Pro friend of my old man told him what was going on and he was hardheaded. I ended up buying with my own money a set of 66 Spalding Elite 333 custom irons with S-300 black labels. Also ordered from another source a set of Power Bilt Woods with C (stiff) shafts. I ordered them from another source with help from a friend where the old man could not change the order. When I got all of that he got mad and took the Wilsons which I said good riddence. I have always felt that those clubs caused my bad habits. Still even into my 20s I had a tendency to overswing and rope hook it. If I hit a cussed double cross hook it was darn near a left lateral. I taught myself an anti hook swing. If set up either observing or instruments present it will read that my clubface is open at impact. Yes it does read and appear that way but if you look at my clubface in reference to my target you will see it is neutral. Now I do play a trap cut as my natural shot. Back when I was younger I pulled most of my shots on the backswing way past parallel like John Daly amd lots of times laid the club off at the top. But as a natural move I sometimes if needed looped the club to back into my spot. Now I did not always lay off at the top and never knew if I looped it or not. With the driver I always followed theough so violently that the shaft hit me in the back of the head. Now I will admit when I turned 50 or so because of age and weight my backswing shortened some. Now since my accident now 2 1/2 years ago I had to make some changes. I did shorten my backswing think as in Jon Rahm or Tony Funeau. I also narrowed my stance which helps me balance wise and does not put any stress on my back. I rely on my upper body strength and do not have much lower body movement. I picked up a lot of upper body strength during therapy due to not being properly supervised and using my upper body instead of strengthing my core. It came out on my evaluation. In fact it is the basis for a seperate law suit against the therapy people by me and the insurance company. I had to do like 4 extra weeks of closely supervised therapy for back and core strength. Now I do my back exercises at home but I also do upper body exercises. No I do not pound weights but do stuff like hand grippers and 5 lb weights watching TV. I have always figured how to maximize strengths. Now with all of that being said I am not as long as I was even pre accident but pretty darn straight. All joking aside I do not hit a driver but 220 or so anymore every now and then I get sneaky long and get like 230 or so. On my irons I am about 2 clubs shorter I only hit my old blade 9 iron about 105 or so. But I have learned to play pain free and basically plot my way around the course.

80 on my home course today -- one double, no birdies (shot to my course handicap). Didn't feel like I was hitting my driver as well as I have been again today. Not sure what's up with that. Putter was a bit better today, although I did miss a couple of makable putts, burning edges or lipping out. Shot of the day was 155 yard uphill sand shot with my 6 iron to about 12 feet below the pin (missed the birdie putt, but did tap in for par). Played our MGA weekly game of 2 best net from the foursome. We shot -20 and had first place until a 3some got their blind draw and eeked us out with a -21. We also played team skins -- 4 skins were claimed and my team took 2 of them. Our 15 handicap player had 2 birdies on stroke holes and shot 38 on the front side. The B player (6 handicap from the forward tees) shot a 75. Our D player didn't play all that well, but did manage to help us out on a few holes with strokes.
