    Happy thread

My son finished up golf camp yesterday. He didn’t feel great after breakfast and had to pick him up early but he had a great week and actually received “the sportsmanship award”. When they gave it to him when I picked him up I thought it was just a standard thing for all the kids but it wasn’t. very proud of him because that’s the name of the game in my eyes. No matter how things go sportsmanship trumps all They went through some great things and came away from the week with some great knowledge and things to work on

    How'd you play?

Owen and I played the front nine at River Heights yesterday; the complete dissolution of my game continues. After setting a personal best 88 here last week, I have followed up with three rounds of nonsense and a +19 55 yesterday. Suddenly everything is hooking left except my wedges which are extremely toe-y. Its all in my head, I know. We were supposed to play again today but got rained out which is almost a relief. Ah well...better times ahead, no?

Ball striking was very good today (except for the 6 iron lateral hosel rocket on #15 from a side hill lie that screamed OB). Sadly, my putting wasn't there to support it. Shot an 81.

    How'd you play?

I had a very unique round today. Went as a single & got hooked up with 3 beginners. After I birdied the par 5 #1 hole they said "you go ahead, we are just learning". So I took off. There was a 4 some in front of me. I just played 3-4 balls on every hole. Was a blast! That round was equal to 54+ holes. Got to hit & learn spots on that course that will really improve my HDCP. Perfect practice round!

Happens to my wife and I quite often. I think they view us as intimidating and play worse than normal. I know I was when I played with strangers when I was learning the game. I am always happy to oblige! Practice rounds like that are important for game improvement. It's important to our body learning a correct movement to hit the shot you envision. If you don't, try again... one of the key points in Daniel Coyle's, The Talent Code. We never get to do that during a normal round.

    How'd you play?

Today's MGA game was individual stroke play with an aside to "beat the pros". The deal was Best Ball gross from the 2 pros vs individuals net score. Bet whatever you want from $10-$100. If you win you get 125% credit. If you lose, your wager goes straight to your credit account, so you don't really lose (other than the retail loss of cash vs store credit). In any case, I didn't beat the pros. Shoot, I didn't even beat my self! Shotgun start and I started on the par 3 #16. Missed a 3 foot birdie putt!!!! Then on #17, I miss a 5 foot birdie putt!!!! Oy vey. 18, my third shot goes long over the green, poor pitch on the green that rolls down 2 tiers and I 3 putt for a double. It only gets worse from there. Overall, I have 5 doubles (all due to poor chip/pitch) and limp in with an 88 (net 81)...the pros were even par. It's discouraging when you shoot your handicap and you haven't even made the turn yet!!! LOL. I love this game! Better day tomorrow one would hope!

  15. Made a purchase I put off since last year when I got fitted for it. Bought Callaway Epic LS driver with a MMT 60 shaft in it. It’s not the shaft I was fitted for but it is very close so I pulled the trigger on it because of a sale. I’m interested in seeing how it works out since I haven’t carried a driver in 3 years. Also grabbed some Maxfli tours since everyone here has been having good luck with them.

  16. Was doing speed training today and noticed my swing getting out of sort when reviewing the video. I start to throw my hands forward instead of keeping them back and close. I think ill have to step away from speed training for at least 6 months until my swing work has become really solid. I don't want to stall my progress by having to make corrections after speed sessions

I can only imagine the emotions of leaving your home of the last eight years, where you've grown as a family and made a lot of memories. Here's hoping that your new home will provide lots of new ones. After seeing all the photos and hearing the stories about your family, I bet you'll all make amazing ones.

Another game of Wolf today with the same two guys as Tuesday. If I have my best game, I can hang with them, but they are more consistent than I am (and they know this course and greens better than I do). Not so good today; shot 81 with no birdies, but no doubles either. The biggest difference today was poor putting. Had my chances but couldn't convert. The other guys tied with rounds of 78. The bad news is that I gave back 9 of the 12 quarters I won on Tuesday!! Seems like every time I had a decent hole as the Wolf, one of them had a better hole!

  22. I actually don't play an armlock anymore, bag in my sig is way out of date. also, i changed the spec on my Ping Chipr order. they said to order the length and lie angle like your putter, so i ordered it at 32" (my putter is actually 31.5").

  23. Most of the time around our course I use a 5 iron Raymond Floyd style up on the toe. If I have to go over something it is usually the Mac 11 iron at 50*. I have a somewhat reputation around our place for 5 ironing someone to death. I must be an oddity because I have taught several how to do that around my club.

I found the Tour to be longer off the tee than the Tour X as well when compared head-to-head. Personally felt like the Tour X / ProV1x / MTB-X are all similar for me, at least similar enough that I don't notice a huge difference. I could not get the regular Tour to react reliably going into greens. This year I played several rounds with some older Z-Stars and didn't have that problem, but I also added more loft on my irons and fixed some swing things that were making my dynamic loft at impact way too low. If the Tour X came in yellow I'd buy a couple dozen over the Snells which are now not as great of a deal as in year's past.

  28. I lived for 22 years on the west side of Oregon. I left in 1970 for the dry side of the Cascades. At my age I like fairways that add lots of roll; it's why I learned to hit the ball straight.

  33. I know that -3" sounds really short, but for me to have this sort of setup/look below, a club needs to be about 31.5 or 32". Its because i am 5'5" but short legs and average length arms, so my wrist to floor is 31". Also, i can only choke down a certain amount because at some point the butt of the handle will hit some part of my body.
    2 points
  34. For those that are considering the Ping Chipr, i spoke to Ping about fitting for length for it. Should you treat it like an iron for length or truly like a putter for length. They said putter. For me, that is important because I play my irons -0.5" but my putter is 31.5". I updated my order to be 32". So its going to be very different for me, instead of chipping with a 9 iron, i will be chipping with a club that has a 9 iron loft but is 3.5" shorter than the 9 iron i play.

... Dicks and GG are basically the same store, just different locations. If you had the desire, you could certainly tell the Dicks mgr that GG doesn't have the yellow cubes (they don't) and see if he would sell you 4 dozen yellow MT's for the cube price. Since they only sell golf equipment/supplies I have found the mgr's at GG bend over backwards for any reasonable request while Dicks, that sells everything sporting is more dependent on the mgr.

  36. Late to posting, but some used TS2 hybrids that were on sale for ~$60 each arrived and will be replacing my beat-to-death TaylorMade rescue. I’ve already since replaced the stock grips with Lamkin Sonar+ Midsize grips and they are going to battle my CP2 Pros for my new go-to grips going forward.

    Unique WITB setups

Love it @scooterhd2! I love old cleveland woods (check out the Cleveland Classic below) as they have really deep faces which I prefer! As for weird setups, I am still in my 30s and I carry two drivers (a 9* and 12*, both Cobra Speedzones with the same shaft in them). I am much straighter with the 12* but I the 9* is perfect launch conditions for me and carries the ball 30 yards farther and rolls more. From there I go 5W, 4hyb, 5hyb, 6-PW, AW, LW, Putter. And I still have room for a 14th club (sometimes it is a SW if I need it).

  39. I don’t know. If a young player starts out on the LIV tour and never qualifies/plays on the PGA tour, will he have a chance to become a bonafide golf great? We can’t know until we find out what OWGR, sponsors, majors and others do with LIV players…stay tuned.

  40. Earlier this year I replaced the JumboMax grip on my driver with a Golf Pride CPX grip. It was an improvement over the JumboMax but after several weeks of golf with it, I felt it was just too soft. Today I replaced the CPX grip with an MCC +4 grip. I’ve long been a fan of the MCC+4 grips. Several weeks back I tried the grip selector on the Golf Pride website and it recommended the MCC +4. I guess they do know something about grips.

  42. I wouldn't buy one today but I think if we truly subscribe to the ethos of this forum, it's finding the best gear for you regardless of brand. That should also include design. A chipper never passed the cool test. Time to toss the cool test to the bin...I'd rather go low than look cool.

  43. ... Tiger did not play older kids as a jr because he (and Earl) wanted to learn how to not just win, but crush his opponents, something he could not do with older kids. Beat them, sure but not completely dominate them. Liv does not have the best talent in the world so it would hold no value for him. And Major wins was always his ultimate goal, not money.

  47. Got fitted for a Edel Putter today and it went very well. I went to the GolfTec in Clearwater, Florida and was fitted by Nick Ramsey. The fitting took about one hour and thirty minutes and it really rips your putter to pieces if you're gaming the wrong stick... The fitting starts off with an interview of your putter tendencies. How do you miss? Are you long or short, pushing right or pulling left. (Me: I was long and to the left) Then you're thrown onto an aim board which will show you how you are aiming at address for about a 1 foot putt. (Me: I had my face open to the right). After the aim board they take a laser and lay it down directly at a ball and then place a mirror on your putter and have you come to address for a 5 foot putt and they remove the ball so you can see where you are actually aiming at address. (Me: I was aiming about 6" right with the face open and about 8" up increasing the lie angle). This was eye opening because at address I thought my putter looked perfect and obviously the further out you go the worse it gets... After that, the fun part begins... Building the correct putter. The fitter walked me through a bunch of options including the head styles, alignment plates, grips, different lie angles, and counter weights in both the head and the shaft of the club. Once the club is built they run you through the aim board and laser test again and again until you feel like you have the perfect club in your hand... For Me the perfect club was Edel EAS 4.0 at 33" with the standard round grip, 68* lie angle, and a 25 gram counter weight in the head. The alignment plate was One on top and two on the bottom... Then it's off to the putting green to put it to work and imo it did. It took me a little bit to get used to but, I definitely saw the improvement almost immediately. Solid strikes rolling end over end with livable misses. At 5 feet and in the putter was deadly and sank almost every putt I hit. At 10 feet the putter felt great and the ones that didn't go in, were tap in's. So even if you don't want to go with an Edel Putter, getting fit definitely shows you what you "need" before you actually buy a putter. For me it was a no brainer and the Edel EAS 4.0 will be going in my bag as soon as it arrives.
