    How'd you play?

Two weekends ago my wife and I were out on the East End of Long Island visiting friends on the North Fork (aka Wine Country - lots of small and some not-so-small wine growers and vintners out there); near where our friends are is this really fun little 9-hole Par 3 that's almost like somebody's back yard .. you're actually in a quiet residential neighborhood off the main roads. Been several years since the last time we were there, and the course has a new owner and is in really great shape! Here's the sign that greets you as you walk around the clubhouse towards the course... And here's the view looking "down" #9 as you come around the corner .. the tee box is in the background past all the sand... We didn't keep score - except for putting, as we have an on-going putting competition - but didn't hit the ball too badly .. most of the time Missed a few greens, made a few up and downs, missed a few up and downs, ... you know the story! Here's a view of an approx 105 yard downhill shot .. if you zoom in you can see my ball a little left of the flag, and yes did make the birdie putt that time! It was hot hot hot and almost no wind, but very few other people out so we were able to do 9 pretty quickly and took a replay. Lisa made a birdie here on the second loop Definitely worth it .. lotta fun; called "The Cedars" in Cutchogue if anyone happens to be in that area.

  5. My most sincere apologies to @Yellow Ball. While I was trying to be considerate in not assigning a specific gender identification to our esteemed forum member I understand where my words may have caused undue harm and pain. I strive to be better, and will do better in this instance. I will work on adding in some logic to everyone's handle such that you can provide your preferred pronoun for all forum members to see Options will be (but not limited to) He/Him/She/Her/It/They/Them/Shank/Slice/Hook/Bombs McGee/Three Putt/Ace/Shooter etc. In regards to your exclusion from winning. The reason was that with your application you DID NOT quote the initial post with all your details, which we all know is required to be considered to win. It had nothing to do with your status as an err ummm... please see above.

  6. I don't know when I have ever been so offended. Calling me an "it". Have I not brought charm and personality to the forum? Have I not brought humor, sarcasm? Have I not made people laugh and tremble with fear? Just because I have no arms and legs does not make me an "it". Therefore there should be some leeway to the instructions for the handicapped! Maybe I can't put a stroke on me with the putter but It would make a great trophy on my wall.

  9. The fact that explanation may be needed disheartens me... and I am only 30 years old myself That said, @Kenny B's comparison is wholly undeserved but I appreciate you letting us know that Don Rickles is the only comedian you know of

  10. p.s. you'll have to explain who that is to the youngum's on this thread

  11. This is what a competent commissioner looks like. Jay could have avoided the large majority of this LIV drama by just taking a phone call from Andy and PGL guys. They wanted to actually work with the tour and it would've been infinitely more interesting than the fractured PGA/ LIV drama that we now have. I seriously think Monahan should lose his job over how badly he's botched all of this. Imagine if we could've had a real PGA tour version of F1/ Premier league with relegation and calling up players to teams when they're on a heater. Instead we get a hit and giggle with some washed up guys and a few stars. And an even less interesting PGA tour. At least until we see the real changes they roll out and that is going to take time.

    How'd you play?

Had a decent front nine, felt like I was striking the ball well but was getting lots of bad bounces and kicks. Still managed a 41. But my round fell off the rails on the back nine, started missing my lines and was still getting bad bounces and went on a run of bogeys and doubles. Somehow though on the last few holes my driver started straightening out a bit from my usual cut, so I decided to take a very aggressive line on the last hole. Started directly over the houses on the left of the hole, with a baby fade to cut the corner. Normally I play this hole safe with an iron into the fairway, since a short drive is in the first pond, and too much fade finds the second pond, but I hit a near-perfect drive and managed to birdie the hole for the first time ever. Ended up with an 85, which is right on my course handicap. If I had managed to avoid my 6-hole blowup on the back nine (I was +9 on holes 11-16) I feel like breaking 80 was in the cards. Alas, it will have to wait until another day!

  21. Agree, it is nice to provide access to the guys at headquarters to get some of their perspectives. Even though I am there all the time as a tester, I always learn something new on how/why they do things the way they do. and for those who didn’t join (or did join) and still have tester related questions, I’m happy to give my perspective on the testing, the clubs, and what goes into being a tester.

  23. Jumping on the wagon of updates: -I would say we are maybe 1/2 through the season. We have had great golf into November and I am at 12 total rounds (18 holes). That is also with missing most of June with my selling of the house. I am confident as long as we have good weather and a decent length in season I will hit 30 rounds. -Have not played with any spies yet outside of Bryan and even that we were in different groups. Alot of rounds with my Dad which is awesome. -Handicap is hovering. I am currently 5.8, I had a couple rounds that really could have been low and helped me here but...Tis' golf. -And lastly probably one of the biggest factors of my game, approach...I have seen a consistent improvement. I have lowered my SG to 10.6, also improving my GIR to 40% compared to 31.7% this time last year. Also last year was 43% short compared to 33% this year. I attribute that to clubbing up and a smoother swing. -Also of note my short game last year was 18.7 SG with an average yardage to the pin of 13 yds compared to this year a SG of 8.8 and 8 yds to the pin

  24. Might as well re-visit these as I'm 3/4 of the way through my season at this point: Season started rough in this area, but has come around since my last lesson. Still losing about 1.3 strokes to penalties from the tee in 2022, which is not a huge improvement over 2021. Handicap has dropped into the high 5s thanks to a nice stretch of scores. Made some improvements in short game and putting this year that have helped a lot, but overall I'm seeing progress throughout the bag (well, except maybe with my driver). Mentally, this year has been tough. I've had a few things get in the way of playing/practicing as much as I'd like to. I'm still really competitive with myself and it's been frustrating at times not seeing the results I feel like I should be seeing. That "sliding scale" of expectations is tough to deal with at times. Pretty sure this sets a new long drive record for me. This one was not wind-aided but I did manage to catch a downslope that probably added the last 20 yards or so:

  26. Took the 1-iron to my practice session today. Well, I can hit it... not very high up in the air and not very far... oh yeah, and it hurt!! Must have missed the sweet spot. The shaft is waaaay too stiff for me. It's in such beautiful shape that I don't want to fiddle with it, so I guess it becomes decoration in my new hitting bay when it's finished.

    Cooking

Trimmed, salted, and ready for the 12 hr dry brine. Will be seasoned with a smoked coffee rub prior to going in the Pit Boss. Tri-tip! This and Picanha are the 2 red meat staples in the Marler crew. My local WinCo sells both and they are always $6 or less/lb which is a steal! And the quality is terrific. More pics to come

  30. Thinking about it. I do have something coming up with Vokey thanks to the East Coast Meetup where I'm looking to get into the nitty gritty since I like manipulating face angles for certain shots, but at this point I'm open to just about anything. It is weird right now because I love how the other two wedges get through the turf and work so well on full shots, 3/4 shots, half shots, etc... but for chips and pitches around the green I'm not sure if I have technique yips or club yips, but I just don't feel comfortable over any shot around a green right now.

  32. I'm looking at maybe a new 58* wedge, just have lost all confidence standing over short chips and pitches with the hi toe, which super bums me out. I might even consider going the chipper route as well

  33. Mid-Season Update: 1. already played more rounds of 18 than all of last year thanks to joining a local cc 2. can count on one hand how many times I've hit the range. I've opted for playing anytime I have the free time 3. handicap is starting to trend in the right direction, took a while to get used to the tougher course 4. broke par for the first time on July 9th! 71 (-1) with a back 9 31 (-5) 5. been pretty close a couple times this year, but still aceless Goal I added since joining the CC - birdie or eagle every hole on the course. So far I have 11 holes checked off - 10 birdies, 1 eagle

  34. Just FYI - I'll be there late day/maybe dinnertime Friday. Rob - you can slot me in the later tee times, if others prefer earlier ... I could use extra time in the mornings to stretch and roll out the old back; and Sunday am in no hurry to get stuck back in NY area traffic! Thx!

  39. watching c. smith play since he came on the tour , he looks to have the complete game ( could hit the driver a little straighter ) i think he could become the next rory m. if smith 120 mil - masuyama 150 mil - fowler 80 mil and 5-6 other big names --50 mil each go liv it would be a big blow to the pga , so far the pga has not taken a big hit ( dj was close as was brooks k. ) ( phil was a fan favorite ) , the rest no big deal i will add a player i like to watch is hovland , he is a great asset to the pga , always smiling , never beats his clubs into the grown , you can tell he is very happy where he is at and loves what he is doing . just my thoughts .

  40. When a business entity feels they are "to big to fail", they're typically big enough. It's the old evolve and innovate or become obsolete axiom. Greg Norman and his hired think-tank are leveraging every aspect/weakness they see in the PGA model. Nothing new here in the world of business and new entrants efforts to grab a share of a market. They also are benefitting from Jay's decision to pull the nuclear lever. Here's looking forward to the first PGA event in Montana . Surprised to hear Smith's only hearing $100M; would expect more. Could Hedeki become the new bench mark deal, rumored to be $250-300M? This will no doubt rankle Phil's feathers. Who might even eclipse that mark? What would a Tiger deal be worth - $1B? If Greg allows use of carts, that might just get it done . Just having some fun on a topic that nothing anyone says on this thread will have any affect on how this ultimately plays out... some have their suspenders cinched awfully tight .

  41. My favorite trip on the east coast is the Greenbrier in WV. My son and I can shoot skeet and sporting clays in the AM, have lunch and be on the fist tee of Old White by 1pm. I was trying to talk my wife into buying a place there just for the gun club, the golf was just a bonus.

    Maxfli Tour

... Well, I will say this. If you bought 1 dozen Tour and 1 dozen Tour X for $60 I can't imagine you wouldn't think it was well worth the $. Of course neither may become your favorite ball but there is a very good chance you will at a minimum enjoy their performance and not feel like you wasted $60.

    How'd you play?

Ever run into a course that's rating and slope doesn't match how it actually plays? I Played Santa Anita for the first time from the tips and was happy to walk away with a 46/46 92. Not too bad for having to hit every shot aside from the tee with the ball well above or well below my feet. It's only 6400 yards from the tips, but what I did not realize even with the description of 'links like undulations' was exactly how big, steep, and everywhere those undulations are. There's hardly a flat lie on the course. On top of that almost every green was raised, protected by bunkers, postage stamp small, and heavily sloped. Unfortunately they were also painfully slow which didn't help the day for me. There wasn't a single hole that wowed me but taken as a whole it's a great course. If the conditioning were closer to CC than muni it would probably be a top course in the LA area.

  44. From the other day, while I did almost dunk one, this was the best shot of the day: While it was a double (atrocious putting and greenside work on my part) the 2nd shot after a poor tee shot was a highlight for me because I did exactly what I wanted to do. Had to hit a low right to left ball because I was under a tree and was completely blocked from a straight low stinger. Nailed the shot, 200 yard draw that just barely hopped off the green. What a hole it would have been if I made the chip/down.

  45. Being a most wanted tester can be bad; lots of equipment to test and ponder. I spent a little more time with the Ping ChipR yesterday and I am now intrigued. People say just use X iron, but it seems like the weighting and upright lie angle just make this club better for chipping and finesse wedge shots than a normal iron. It simply isn’t as limited as I originally made a chipper out to be and it may ultimately be better for me than having a high lofted wedge in the bag. I’ll tie this to my Shot Scope review; with limited data, I am losing a lot of strokes in the <50 yard range so maybe shotscope is telling me I need this club. I’m guessing this will be a club that is turned over quite a bit so I may wait for some to show up on the used market
