  1. I’ll start by saying yesterday was my first round with a chipper, and I had a brand new 4H and 56* in my bag also. It looks like I batted 1.000 with all of them. The Smart Sole C was phenomenal. I’d gotten very tippy around the greens, but this not only worked great on the practice green Friday, it was terrific yesterday. By the end of the round I was looking for any chance I could to use it, and there wasn’t a shot I didn’t pull off! I honestly think it’s a matter of when, not if I start holing out a few from off the green. The 4H was like all my other Halo series clubs. Not the longest I’ve ever played, mishit’s tend to come up short but stay online. I get away with murder with these clubs. I took my 54&58 out of the bag and replaced them with a 56 because I needed a spot for the chipper. I only used it twice, once after driving into a pot bunker in the middle of a fairway, and one green side bunker. No issues, but I’d like to have had a few full shots with it, but the opportunity never came up. We played a quota game, and I had to make 25 points from the 5800 yd Senior tees. I had a very good round, shot 78 and was +3 which won my flight by 3 points! The only “blemish” was a double on the par 5 18, I hit a very good drive, but it had started raining pretty hard two holes earlier, and I lost my grip on my next two swings. Both were topped about 30yds. I took of my glove for the next shot, but I had a little red a** by then and hit it over the green. Chip, 2 putts, added up to a wet, sloppy 7. To sum it up, I could not be happier with the round. My sciatica is finally gone, I played pain free, scored well, and love the changes I made to my bag.

    Got Problems?

Long time listener, first time caller. Felt like my allergies were kicking up this morning. I don't normally have issues with them, but occasionally they bother me. Congestion, scratchy throat, and a little bit of a runny nose. My wife suggested I test and now it looks like I'll be out of work the next 5 days.

    How'd you play?

Shot a 71 a few days ago .. for 14 holes (haha lol). Wife and I were out with another couple ... it was getting late and we were all hot and sweaty and starting to tire and hungry and thirsty and the last four holes were getting a little jammed up (and... and...) so we just finished at a short Par 3 that parallels the parking lot and bailed and all went to dinner. Did manage a few ok tee shots and few ok short approach shots; short game was a little 50-50, tho. Oh, and nailed the shot on that last par 3! - Played 9 yesterday and somehow managed to scrape together a 45 that included two Triples (ouch), one Double (yuck) and three 3-putts (whaaaat??!!??) but still had only 18 putts total .. which was more a function of chipping/pitching it close a few times for a few 1-putts. Here's the best one ... (1) Solid tee with the 3W but landed in the right rough so no bounce and roll - to the left of where it landed is a downslope to a flat area in front of those bunkers before the green. (2) Dunno what kinda mental lapse/brain fart/??? thing I did but had 100 to the center of the green, a clear shot and the ball decided to go its own way waaaay waaaaaay off to the right into the adjacent fairway. (3) LW through a gap between two trees and onto the unseen green surface sloping away from me. My wife was on the other side of the green and said the ball almost ran into the flagstick and dropped in! (4) 2 foot putt for a memorable up and down Did hit driver twice decently - not far, but solid and into the fairway; and hit the 3W twice decently also .. and again not that far but solidly and into the fairway. The other tee shots... Had some trouble with too many second shots but did nail one 8i and one 9i approach!! In fact... if you zoom into this pic onto the flagstick you'll see my ball in decent proximity to the hole... ..the main path to the green goes around to the right; by the time I got there, grabbed my putter thinking ... "possible birdie going here... Cinderella story..." ... and walked onto the green my ball wasn't there! .. It had been sitting just past the edge of a slope going back down towards the front of the green, and I guess the wind had acted on it just enough to push it to where gravity took over.... (well it *is* the Law after all ) And then I 3-putted for bogey.

48/39 -> 87/84 adjusted Eh. Decided I needed to finally commit to swing changes on course. Last lesson my coach gave me both long-term changes and short-term band-aids to use. The band-aids worked well for a while, but after being out with COVID for two weeks I lost all of my feels so figured I might as well start changing things for good. Really didn't play too poorly, but it unfortunately took about six holes to get into a groove this morning. Had a bad first nine (started on 10) going double, bogey, par, +5 (two lost tee balls), bogey (lost ball saved by excellent wedge), double, birdie, par, double. Second nine was much better and just one or two little things here or there away from being near even par. Going to keep grinding and remembering the good shots that I hit this morning. The goal of the changes is to straighten my ball flight out a bit and on ones I hit well it's obviously a much improved flight (including more distance), especially with my driver. Finished the round pounding one 288 uphill, leaving me a pitching wedge into the par 5. By far the shortest club I've ever had into that green (three putted for par from 30-40 feet).

  6. Score wise it was a crappy day - the front wasn't a too bad 46 but the back.......well let's just say that the 1 on the par 3 as in Hole In One really helped. This is not only my first but also the first I've ever seen. The best part was that the other three guys I was playing with started shouting just before it hit the hole so I got to see it roll in.

  7. I posted it in the 'Shot of the Day' thread. It was a short - 95 yd par 3 over the water -which I've birdied a few times. I always launch the ball high to add a bit of spin otherwise it'll run out into the water which surrounds the small green on three sides (think 17 at the Players). As always it was a typical windy day on Lake Erie so I used my Cobra Speedzone PW. The guys I was playing with started yelling that it was headed for the pin - so I looked up just as the ball landed, spun about 3 feet sideways and straight into the hole. If you look closely, you'll see the divot adjacent to the shadow of the flagstick and the brown spot. This is not only my first but also the first I've ever seen.

    How'd you play?

Man, was yesterday an adventure! Owen and I played River Heights yesterday with our buddy Mark. Mark usually plays a huge draw off the tee. This time he broke out his old Cleveland Hi Bore driver from his high school days. Now every tee shot went straight, but he couldn't adjust for most of the round so many of his tee shots went WAY right. He's one of the better golfers I've played with so he was able to bail himself out more often than not, but it was wild to watch. Today I was back to struggling with almost every facet of my game. Most of my tee shots were bordering on snap hooks, as were many iron shots. I was topping a lot of long approaches. I hit two really bad wedges off the toe but otherwise my wedge game was really good for me and I was putting much better than I had been recently. All longer holes were just a comedy of errors. Usually wound up joking to myself, "Ok, hole this wedge to save bogey." I lost two sleeves of balls. On the plus side, I had six up and downs. On twelve holes I was either just off the green or hit a long putt that all left tap-ins. Had a couple of cool-looking second shot saves that were unfortunately not the product of skill but from mis-hits and dumb luck, lol. Spent a few extra seconds to really line up my putts and the results were good. Overall though, its infinitely more frustrating to be decent around the green and terrible beforehand than the other way around. Course was pretty busy and we were waiting a few times early on. A single caught up to us and we offered to let him join us on hole six. Colin was a lefty and played from the tips (we played from the whites) and seemed to fit pretty well with our group. After teeing off on seven, Mark realized he'd lost his phone so he peeled off to search for it. We let Colin play through and Owen and I hung out near the tee box on eight, letting the next couple groups play through. Mark found his phone on hole three (!) and caught back up to us. At the turn we were joined by our friend Randy for the back nine. He generally has chipping yips but other than one hole he was hitting them pretty well. Owen played his usual brand of decent golf save for a blow up on 16. Mark shot 87, Owen 88, Randy 46 on the back nine, and I put up a sizzling 50/55 105 (+33).

Dufffed the tee shot and had about 178 to the pin. grabbed my 7 iron and stuck it to a foot. The guy I was playing with was saying "go in". I didn't think it was that close but It was awesome once I saw it finish. Yes I made the birdie putt.

  13. Hoping that I’m making the right decision at 48 years old here. I’m planning on coming out of retirement and playing ice hockey again. I have not played in ~17 years but I think I can still pull it off. Fitted into and purchased new skates this morning and just finished ordering everything else that I need to get back on the ice. I figure that I have a month or so to get comfortable before league starts. Hockey and golf should be a good balance, right?

  14. So I got new glasses this week. The change in prescriptions from the last one to this one is significant. Predictably that really messed me up. I couldn’t get comfortable, didn’t make consistent contact and had a few that were down right embarrassing. The good news was that I saw every shot even though they were all over the place. I’ve had times over the past 6 months when I saw zero shots. Hopefully I get used to these quickly - like before tomorrow afternoon’s round

2 week layoff for me (thanks Covid) but managed a 79 for my 1st round back. 6 Fir 11 Gir 2/6 up & down, with a whopping 36 putts. Surprised I shot that well, honestly. I felt exhausted after about 12 holes. Wouldn’t have made it if I was walking today…

    The Still Aceless Thread

... Oh boy, I have seen my cousin who has never broken 100 have two. One a topped 5 wood from 160 that bounced down a hill, hopped over a little creek, bounced up on the green and right in the hole. 2nd he sliced a driver off a tree 20 yds right of the green from 175 that bounced straight back on the green and in the hole. My snowbird amigo from Chicago that is usually in the mid to lower 90's hit the best 4 hybrid I have seen him hit to a 167 yd back right pin that had his little fade on it, hit the green and tracked straight for the hole. At least that one was a really good shot. Saw two more over the years that were pretty routine. I also dreamed I had one on a tough ... oh who am I kidding, the Golf Gods won't even let me dream of having a HIO.

Had a reasonable round today. On July 6th we had a terrible thunderstorm hit town. I really devastated the city, especially our golf course. The course was closed down due the cleanup and repair needed, and just opened up last Friday. No, it was not in perfect condition, but must say the grounds crew did an outstanding job getting things back in order. Anyway I will take a 4 over any day of the week!

Excellent man excellent----- Main thing is you are pain free----- We did ok on the Shootout for what we have to work with player wise. Shot -5 which did not get jack because -11 won it which I predicted before hand. We had like 4 good strong player teams and I knew with our team it would hard to place in the slots. My bud from Ohio who is a good guy does not understand anything about golf could not figure how I could predict the top teams and scores. I told him I had played in the darn thing nearly every Saturday for 3 years and know all the games of players and the teams. I also added that after my accident our team split up and I was a floater for a year or too and at one time or the other had played with most of them. Also played with quite a few of them in the 9 and Dines. Had a couple of clubs in the bag I had not tried in a while. A friend of mine who used to be a Titleist Staffer gave me a new unhit Vokey SM 5 I think it is 58*. Man it hits good. Put two blasts from my past back in my bag a Vokey 252 series 52* and an old Bulls Eye putter with a round leather grip. Our course has gotten into great shape and the greens are great. I went back to my old school roots putting and putted lights out. I am also pain free after making drastic swing changes and have been playing at least 9 holes every day

  22. When you golf with a group of guys for the first time in a year, and they go through your bag to see what’s “new”. This is, of course, followed by, “What happened to the driver/irons/wedges/putter you had last time we played?” And you answer, “Oh! I switched out clubs TWICE since then! Got better numbers with these in a fitting…”

    How'd you play?

So played today after yesterday’s range fiasco with the new glasses. Really struggled with driver which is very unusual and frustrating for me. I shot 81 but had 3 birdies, a triple and 2 doubles. I just can’t flush driver yet - I wear progressive lenses and my prescription changed big time especially in my left eye. All my issues were driver related - I’m sure I will adjust fairly quickly - especially since I hit my fairway woods and hybrid great

I shot an 80 today, second best score in more than 55 years. Felt a bit like a Caddyshack moment. Driver worked as well as it has in forever (thank you for firmer fairways), fairway woods were on point, short game was good and the putter was puttin' along. Hit seven greens in regulation which is normally a month's supply. Only missed one bunker shot being on and within shouting distance of the hole. Only one double bogey for the round, no birdies, seven pars. There are days that after a round I might brood a bit. Today was a day to bask. Sorry, had to share with folks who might understand.

Not scoring well at the moment while working on some swing changes. Driver sucks at the moment. Glimpses of really good with irons at times. One thing that is messing with me right now is iron distances. I'm hitting the ball longer, and when making good strikes, i'm either landing on the back of the green or flying over the green. I'm generally a fairly high spin player, so my balls stay on the green if it lands on the green, but it sucks flying them.

Moved from the Shot of the day thread... still hot from the round today!! My wife and I got paired with a twosome this morning. One guy looked familiar... I used to work with him from 1975-1980. Lots of old times to talk about!! Well, their golf games sucked. Mine wasn't the best either. I started... Birdie-Par-Double-Birdie-Double and finished the front nine with a 43 (+6). The back nine was better; shot 38 (+3) for a round of 81. One of my poorest driving days in quite awhile. Also, it was difficult to make up anything on the greens as they were much slower than normal. Maintenance put something on them that made them "sticky"... fungicide, I think. I could feel it on the ball after putting. Probably causes cancer; I wonder if I'll see an ad on TV from some law group telling me to call right now!!

I was taking a walk this morning B4 it got too Hot and one of my neighbors who had a knee replacement a year ago June was getting his morning paper. He was amazed that after 59 days since my knee replacement I was walking around pretty good and playing some golf. His knee was huge, twice the size of his good knee. Some people I guess heal better and possibly health care comes into play. He hasn’t touched a club in 1.5 years. Stu, we’re pretty lucky!

  41. ... I played with a 23 yr old stud yesterday of the 2nd time that was about 50yds or longer than me off the tee. Awesome young man and really enjoyed his company. I was up 2 strokes on the par 5 #15 when he hit a nice wedge to 8 feet and I pulled a wedge left on the fringe for a 20 footer. We played ready golf and he often played before me and he made his putt for his first birdie of the day. I proceeded to roll mine in as well for my 3rd birdie and instead of being disappointed he was pretty excited and gave me an enthusiastic high 5.

  42. I came here to share mine...the super yesterday had a sick sense of humor (there was a scramble earlier in the day and all the pins were set 3 paces off the greens...it was sadistic). 10 is a 380 yard par 4 with a narrow landing area and a creek that funnels around 270 off the tee. I hit a great tee shot that left me 57 yards (downwind and firm ground) from the left rough to a right pin that carries a front right trap and a pin that was set on a peninsula...That pin was 4 paces off the front and I was able to land a 60* 4 feet away and make 3.

  43. I've hit my side wall many times in my hitting bay, and they fly all over! When I try something new and when I am just warming up, I always start with Almost Golf Balls. I do have a large window behind me on the left wall that I worried about. That hitting bay is gone now. It was demolished last month and new concrete footings and floor was poured 2 weeks ago. Walls are going up hopefully tomorrow, and I will soon have a new hitting bay with heat and A/C. The walls will be well-protected, but that large window will still be there so there has to be no chance that balls will be bouncing around.

He's on his phone CONSTANTLY! He got into sports betting earlier this year and he's always placing bets or looking for info. He's a great friend and has been an incredible help as we've gotten into golf but he's got some infuriating golf quirks. He's got the longest pre-shot routine that I've ever played with, and he has a bad habit of teeing off last so he can sit on his phone, then he doesn't even get up until after everyone else has hit. He can also get caught up in conversation regularly. To be fair, pace of play has almost never been an issue with him. I'm actually on the opposite end of the spectrum; nobody plays quicker than me and I could definitely stand to slow down and smell the flowers a little more.

  45. Did you see him drive the 320 yard par 4? Absolutely coined it and followed the dogleg around the corner landing on and rolling to about 4 feet. Yes, this format may help he and others find their absentee games. The change of venue may also prove positive to the mental gremlins he's recently dealt with.

  48. Took @chisag's advice today at the range. I warmed up with wedges where I promptly shanked the first five balls until I figured out I wasn't rotating on the short shots. After that I hit a few more iron shots to warm up, then started the drill. Since I was hitting of a mat, I could only set up about five balls at a time to hit, step, hit, step, etc... It was eye opening to see how well I hit those shots without setting up like normal. I went through several rounds doing that and I'll say I was pretty gassed after a while. I finished the day doing the Monte wait drill I saw on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CgXUq2OJoty/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= When I did hit normal shots, it wasn't quite as good as the last time I got out. I'm going to chalk it up to not being able to get out last week and hit. I was staying back too much on my follow through which is frustrating because I can take practice swings and it's so good. It's all a work in progress and I'm excited to see where my game goes from here.
