    How'd you play?

Really consistent holiday weekend of golf for me. 37 (back nine) 39/37 -> 76 (with a triple and double bogey... ) 39 (front nine) 37 (back nine) Driver has started to cooperate toward the end of the season and that's the reason for the solid scores. Much easier to score well when you're not taking penalties off the tee. I nearly drove No. 13 green twice over the weekend, ending up on the fringe each time and walking away with easy birdies. Not the best weather Sunday-Tuesday (cloudy and gray), but Saturday was a beautiful morning for golf:

    How'd you play?

39/36 with a double bogie on each side, but thankfully 4 birdies. Left 2 or 3 strokes out there with a few really poor short putt misses. I have a tendency to pull or “yank” the straight ones, or if they turn to the right, I tend to push them. Actually, I have the ability to miss almost every type of putt there is!

This post is for Tony, Big Stu, Jason, and any others here who may be interested in cars as well as golf............... Link below to some pictures I took Saturday at this event. It is our 17th year at this site, and the 8th consecutive year I was chair of this event. Between the Silent Auction, Special Raffle Gifts, 50/50 ticket sales, and general public donations made at this event we raised about $9000.00 for Leader Dogs this day. We had a record number of paid participants who showed their cars, and had them judged for awards. It is free for any to come and see, and the venue is a great location to hold an event like this. The Vipers, Mustangs, and Cobras were part of a “Snakes in the Grass” Cars & Coffee event held simultaneously and run by the Father-In-Law of Keith Aldridge who owns this venue. The F-I-L also belongs to our Corvette club, so we accommodate and coordinate very well together. https://photos.app.goo.gl/dQqoQotf7JkqtFHm7

Owen and I played the front nine at River Heights today. Had a few more chunky shots than I would like but otherwise I didn't play too bad. It's funny how things go in cycles. Now that the rest of my clubs are coming online, my chipping has fallen apart. Actually not falling apart so much as I'm wussing out on everything. Putting too. Driver was solid today. Every drive was 230+ including this mama-jamma: First time over 300! To be fair, it hit the cart path just past the bridge...but details, amirite?? Then I ruined the opportunity by mis hitting two chips in a row! Either way, a good round for both Owen and myself. He went 44 (+8) and I shot 46 (+10).

  5. Okay, safe to assume one of two things. Either Maxfli Tour is your ball and you are committed to it, or you hit the jackpot on an eBay sale and plan to use the profits to pay for some other desired booty.

  6. They will go bad as soon as the next ball test comes out and shows something is potentially .8 yards longer and straight. You think balls have a longer commitment then clubs from @dlow206? I'm putting the over under at 3 dozen used, the rest for resale.

LOL that is why you wear knee high rubber boots and wash them in the wash pit. And trust me those old boots get hot in the even in the spring and fall. If you did not wash the insides they would stink as bad as the outsides.

Made the 90 min drive up to True Blue today for an early morning tee time, and for y’all South Carolinians, the course is in great shape. It’s a must play right now. Haven’t hit a golf ball for 11 days until this morning at the range, and with new irons in play as well … 48/46 - 94. Back-to-back triples (3 triples overall) where both holes involved the walk of shame to and from greenside bunkers on each end, are what killed my round. The new putter was money … 32 putts on the round isn’t too much to cheer about. But had 3 putts that just burned the edges and my lag putting was really good today. No 3-putts as well. There’s always room to find a positive in a negative.

    How'd you play?

Tomorrow we start our annual Tuesday Members league championship tournament called The Barefoot Cup. We play the next 3 Tuesdays on each of our Resort courses. The 36 top money winners qualify, no cut, with a gross and net winner. I’ve come close a few times, but have never won. Hopefully that changes this year? I hope I’m not over thinking this, but since I’m thinking my best shot is the net, I’m moving back a tee to get 3 extra strokes tomorrow. I played the same course and tees Saturday and shot an 87 net 74 (it’s a par 71 course) and I’ll probably need to do better tomorrow as that was only good for 6th place out of 20 players in the A flight and didn’t cash. I’m playing off 13 so I’m sort of in no man’s land. It would be a miracle if I could string together 3 rounds low enough to take gross, but this tournament isn’t flighted and there are a lot of high caps from the B flight playing, so it won’t be easy to get net either. This is the only time all year the two flights are together and those guys can put up some ridiculously low net scores. In the A anything around net par will usually cash, but in the B it’s nothing to see 5-6 guys net in the mid 60’s If I had to play in the B flight during the year, I wouldn’t bother with any league play. Their scoring is one of the great mysteries in our club… the same guys seem to go very low every week, yet their strokes never go down… go figure.

And now you know why I really haven't had the time to get out and play golf as much as I would like too. Leader Dogs has been a "special" organization for me to try and support since my teen years when I met a friend of my Dad's who had a golden lab that was able to lead him around like a fortunate person who has sight can do. The cars just bring a lot of nice people together for a great cause.

I played True Blue last Thursday, and you’re right, it’s in great shape. This is going to be maybe my busiest week of golf this summer… Playing the Fazio in Barefoot tomorrow, Pine Lakes Thursday, Brunswick Plantation Friday, and back in Barefoot to play the Love on Saturday. Whew! I’m getting tired just typing all that, but it’s been a long time since my back has felt this good. (Knock wood)

Great way to raise money for a worthwhile cause. when our daughters we’re around 11 or 12 years old SWMBO an article for puppy raising/training for Guiding Eyes. She signed us up and we were vetted and we’re given a Female Lab pup! Pup was selected for the family by Guiding Eyes Staff. We did everything asked went to meetings, veterinary visits and after a year turned her over to Guiding Eyes, very emotional for everyone. After maybe 6 months or more we were invited to the now trained Pup graduation with her new Partner!!! Of course we went and met her new Partner and all the other newly graduated pups. Great experience for everyone!!! Keep up the good work!!!

I think it's a good thing you do. I've checked out Leader Dogs website and saw what it takes financially to train a dog for the blind and you organizing an event to raise money for them is wonderful. Plus, having the car show is a great way to hang out and get to know some people that share the same passion as you.

  19. So, I got a session in this weekend on a putting green. I think I'm getting delivery figured out a bit. I thought from the jump a putter stroke would give me the best results, but I think I need to use it a bit more like an actual wedge, so a bit more of a downward motion with the shot to really get the max out of it. Results though are promising. A captain and crew this week for our year end league may not give me the most chance for Smart Sole usage, but I do think I'm playing a round sometime this weekend as well.

Have some Tour Issue TT XP shafts coming that will probably go into the Miura’s immediately as I just don’t feel comfortable with the SteelFiber i80 R’s. Also have some Tour Velvet Align grips waiting to go on the xp’s. And finally an Accra RPG 352 LBP shaft coming as a test for the winter.

Tee Time this morning 7:11 and by 7:12 I had 2balls in the water!! Yes they were Yellow Titleists!! Sorry YB! Bad start for sure, finally by 6th hole woke up and finished Par, Birdie, Birdie. Not sure what was going on but 3 Yellow Titleist gave their all for the game this morning. I don’t lose balls so this was a shock. Next up Friday Bacon Boyz.

  27. Matt, I f you travel often, I'd seriously consider investing in either the ClubGlove or SunMountain Club Glider. Either one will eliminate you anxiety compltely. They are well made and well protected in the clubhead area. But for extra protection, I suggest taking the club head off the driver and wrapping a towel around the iron clubheads to keep them from moving around too much. Store your driver head in your checked luggage or the bottom of that bag as well. ProTip--Take a pciture of the setting of your driver before you take it off, so you're assured of putting it back to the correct setting. If you do those simple things, you won't have any probelms at all. Well assuming the airlines get them there on time..ha Which is another topic, even thought I have both those bags, I pretty much use Ship Sticks all the time now when I travel. It's not cheap, but the hasle of not lugging clubs through the airport and on and off rental car and hotel shuttles etc is worht it in my mind. I show up at the hotel and they are either in my room or at the front desk waiting for me.

  28. Had 2 today. smoked a 3 wood onto the green on a tough par 5 for a birdie- left the eagle putt short…**wince** hit a 5 iron in between 2 trees from 180. Had about a 3’ window from about 15 feet in front of me to split them. It was either going to be catastrophic or perfect. I lucked out and got the perfect option. Then missed a reasonable birdie opportunity

  29. If everything ever came together in one round, I honestly think I'd be able to shoot somewhere around even par or maybe less. My absolute best is pretty dang good even if I'm not the longest hitter. EDIT: Looking at my SG stats on Shot Scope, my very best in each category compared to a 0 handicap is -0.01 off the tee, +1.19 approach, -0.15 short game, +0.28 putting, for an overall of +1.31.

  31. For me, the answer is easy. The King, Arnold Palmer. Not only did Arnold Palmer usher in the new age of golf during the development of televised events, but he epitomized the every man - and told a nation that anyone can play golf, not just the country club elites. Arnold was the poster-boy for golf tradition and attracted the masses to golf. A rare few have brought more people to the game, and I would argue that none have done so with the integrity that Arnold did. And if you were lucky enough to receive a "thumbs up" from the King... you knew that the golf gods were looking down favorably on you. While his professional golf record is amazing... including 7 majors with 4 Green Jackets.. and as his tournament victories were as explosive as his losses - it is his impact on the institution of golf... outside the tour that impresses me most to this day. My grandfathers came from different worlds, and usually didn't agree on anything... but one thing they had in common... their favorite golfer was Arnold Palmer. If he was good enough for them, he is good enough for me.

Of course it helps I'm trying to work on all parts so it makes me switch things up and have some tangible results along the way. The game is far from where it was ND where i want/need it to be but at least I'm seeing progress.

  34. After a great day yesterday we woke up this morning to my wife and my youngest both sick. Today was spent at the house cleaning and taking care of the sickies. Roughly every hour I'd head to the basement and grab a different club for a dozen or so swings into the net. Mostly though, I'd grab the Lagshot 7 iron. Feels like it really is ingraining a solid tempo in me. Each time I'd spend about half my shots working on some aspect of my swing and half just swinging as hard as I can. Something must be working!

  35. I have some “professional advice” and suggestions for you on this subject (I am a professional clubfitter with almost 33 years experience fitting and building golf clubs): 1. The recommendation that you consider a 4 hybrid (21-22 degrees loft) is a very good one. Virtually every golfer that I have fitted who has 80-82 MPH clubhead speed with a 7-iron hits a reasonably well-struck 4 hybrid at least 180-185 yards, and most of them get closer to 195-200 yards with a well-fitted 4 hybrid. My mid-iron clubhead speed is right in your range, and I hit my Sub 70 4 hybrid (21 degree loft) about 200 yards. A 19 degree 3 hybrid should give you closer to 215 yards. 2. There are a few good options among those hybrids that you have listed, but I would probably stay away from the Apex 19 and PXG 0311X Prototype models, as both are “better player’s” hybrids. 3. The shafts in most, if not all, of those hybrids will almost certainly feel too light for you because they are quite light in weight. I might have suggested that Cleveland Launcher Halo hybrid until I saw that it has that 60 Series Miyazaki C Kua shaft in it (that shaft is not only light in weight, the regular flex in that shaft plays more like a senior flex). The weight of that Project X RDX Black shaft in the PXG hybrid would probably be good for you, but it is a mid-low launch shaft, which likely would not be good for you, as you say you have some trouble getting the ball elevated. 4. On the general subject of shaft weight, I generally recommend that golfers who are comfortable using heavier weight graphite or 110+ gram steel shafts in their irons strongly consider using 80+ gram hybrid shafts. My recommendation is typically that hybrid shafts should be about 10 grams heavier than a golfer plays in the fairway woods, and certainly not lighter than their fairway wood shafts. In your case, you don’t yet have or play fairway woods (good choice at your stage of golfing development, by the way), but this is something to keep in mind for future reference. Incidentally, those who have recommended Tour Edge hybrids are offering good advice, as long as you avoid the company’s “Pro” models, or those that start with the letter C. The models that start or end with the letter E would be best for you, I hope that this helps; good luck and much success with your golfing development! 40. Post a picture of your swing. Can’t recommend anything without seeing exactly what’s going on. Ball should be slightly back with 3w compared to driver, should be teed lower than driver. snap hook could be caused by too far in to out swing and rolling the hands/arms to square the face.

  42. Alright my fellow NE spies. I want to try to get some tee times together for a nice fall round of golf somewhere (depending on who's interested). I live basically on the MA/RI border... but I'm not against driving up to NH or west or towards the cape or where ever it may be that the most of us are able to play at! It won't be anywhere near as fancy and awesome as the gathering that @Golfspy_CG2 put on down in MD but we'll do our best to have a good time for 18 holes and do some socializing at the clubhouse or local establishment. So, if you're interested please send me a PM with your Name, Location, and how far you're willing to travel (something like, an hour or two hours from home) so I can get an idea of where I should look to book something. I figure fall will be here sooner than later so I'd like to get this ball rolling!

    How'd you play?

Owen and I played out at Silver Ridge in Oregon yesterday. It's a course we really like but it's almost an hour west of us so we haven't been there recently. My improved play continues although my putter was incredibly suspect. To my defense the greens had a lot of tricky breaks and were very scuffed up (lots of wildlife). I had six birdie opportunities and came away with three pars and three bogeys. While I left a bunch on the table, I was happy with my ball striking. The six GIRs is a new personal best and other than a total flub on the first hole, my driver was good, although it couldn't decide between going straight or drawing back. Everything else was good too, I even hit a couple of solid five irons which hasn't been done in ages. Next things to work on are alignment and course management (tried a few really risky shots). Owen's driver had been suspended in favor of the 3 wood off the tee, which might be his most reliable club. He otherwise played well enough, beating me by one stroke. I shot (+19) 91.

    How'd you play?

I really am all over the place with my scoring at the moment. 17 strokes between my best and worst over the last 2 weeks. Just outside the prizes at the Gents Open at my home course came 8th with top 6 getting prizes and 10th in the scratch. Putting was a real struggle to start with. I had a bad putting day on Tuesday at Broomieknowe where I couldn't read or drop a putt. Did some work at home moving the ball forward in my stance and it made it worse, 3 putted 2, missed a 3 footer for par at 3, over every putt I felt I could miss. Moved it back toward the back foot and started holing more. Although stats don't show it drove the ball well, suffering a little from a push with my shorter irons that I need to work on. One funny on Tuesday, on the last I said to my playing partner. "My Skycaddie says there is a bunker at 242 yds, can you see it?" "No" Driver middled over the top of the trees. "Oh that bunker" as it bounced and rolled right into it. My playing partner then did the exact same thing.

Played a great round with my brother yesterday. It was his birthday Friday and I'm certainly glad he wanted to go out and get a round in with me and my cousin. Had a personal best 13/18 GIR on the day as my irons and wedges were on point. I landed two 200 yard 5-iron approaches on the green and converted one of those for an Eagle. A double, and 4 bogeys otherwise lead to a +4 75 finish on the day!
