  1. I'll post numbers and such later, but spent some coin today. TSR2 driver and TSR2 3 wood are on the way, each with a Ventus Blue (6S and 7S respectively). Also getting my Callaway Apex Pro hybrids reshafted with a Ventus Blue HB.

  2. First off, I would like to thank @craftsmangolffor sending me the hybrid and putter head cover I will be discussing in this review. I am not sponsored by Craftsman Golf or being compensated for my review. I will do my best to provide an unbiased review of these head covers to stay aligned with MGS beliefs on equipment reviews. This is my first time writing a review, so please feel free to share any ways I can improve! First Impressions (4/5 stars) Upon opening the head covers, I was pleased to see that the attention to detail in stitching quality was excellent. I am sure we have all seen products where stitch lines are not straight, doubled over, stitches coming loose, etc. That is not the case with these head covers. Stitch lines are clean and straight. Both head covers are made from synthetic leather. I really like the textured material on the hybrid head cover, it feels very high quality. The material on the putter head cover is smooth, and while nice, it doesn't have that same "look" as what your OEM headcover would. When I compare it to my stock TM Spider Tour headcover, I prefer the look and finish of the TM head cover. The putter also has screen printed graphics, which I think would look better as something stitched into the material, like what they did with their branding of "CRAFTSMAN" on the putter head cover. If the flag graphics were stitched instead of printed, it would take it to a different level of quality in terms of looks. With that being said, the screen printed design is done very well, with sharp, clean lines. Another plus area for the hybrid head cover were the stitched on synthetic leather details. I really think they knocked the hybrid head cover out of the park! Both head covers have a smooth velour lining, and I am confident they will protect my clubs well without scratching One thing I prefer on the Craftsman putter head cover to my TaylorMade head cover is that is is a magnetic closure instead of velcro. The magnet seems very strong, and it is just more convenient than velcro. One star was lost due to the overall look of the putter head cover. The textured material would have looked better than the smooth, and I'd prefer to see stitching over screen print. This is personal preference, and some may really like the screen printed look. Fit & Function (To Be Updated) I will be getting out onto the course on Thursday, and plan to update this section after my round. Initial fit and function seem good. The fit on the hybrid is great. It was a bit snug to get onto the club, but I think that it will stretch out slightly and that will improve. At the bottom of the head cover, they split the sides, which I like a lot. Subtle, but I think will definitely help with the on/off process. The putter head cover fits well, but it is slightly large for my Spider Tour putter. This is not a negative comment, as it has to be a large enough size to accommodate a multitude of mallet style putters. More or less just an observation. I LOVE the magnetic closure, and on/off is really easy. I have a Callaway Org 14 cart bag in the red/white/blue colorway with a USA flag patch on the bag, and I do really like how both head covers match the style of the bag. Again, the looks of the hybrid head cover are really good. Pictured next to my Titleist Stars & Stripes and Sim2 Max head covers, it looks right on par with quality. Again, I will revisit this review after my round on Thursday with some updates and more thoughts after having them out on the course. I may have overdone it with pictures. Please excuse my messy garage!

  3. Ha! I used iron covers for like 3 weeks when I got my set of srixon 545s. Was only going to use them for transport. Those were dark times in my life that I don't really like talking about

  4. Great review @Jnoble89! I'm using Craftsman Golf iron head covers and find them to be of excellent quality. I'd never heard of them before and simply stumbled on them while searching on eBay.

  5. So did buy a new club recently, and full disclosure did not get fitted nor even demo it, just jumped in (like a good 'ho ) on one of their sales - PXG Gen 5 0311 XF with the PX EvenFlow Riptide CB (50g/5.0). First time out with it yesterday and so far happy with it. Liking the shape and look of the head .. to my eye it appears slightly smaller than 460cc and definitely more trim vs the Callaway Bertha B21 I was using. Was a little hesitant about getting a CB shaft but it feels nice and balanced, and solid at impact. First few swings were not awe-inspiring but the last few holes it started to feel good .. so we'll see how it goes!

Overall pretty lousy day on the course yesterday and I am going to go with the fact that I hadn't swung a club for two weeks. The bad started when I was hitting some shots to warmup before the round; I developed a case of the shanks with the irons and a big slice with the driver. Went to the short game area and hit the ball pretty well so I went back to the range and hit a few more full swings and it was slightly better. Only hit one shank on the course but struggled off the tee for the first 9. Greens were really quick with subtle breaks and I struggled with both distance control and short putts. Definitely a long day all around. Basically just a bad week with lots more weeks to turn it around.

  7. ... When I was at East Carolina University it was rated the #1 party school in the country according to Playboy. I bought the magazine to keep as a reminder. When I was working as a DJ in Athens a few years later and took a class at U of Georgia I informed some of my apartment friends that were UG students and they said No, UG was the #1 party school. I showed them the article and they said I didn't read the footnote at the bottom of the page that disqualified UG because Playboy considered UG a "Professional" Party school. In a similar vein GolfspyCG2 is a "Professional" HO and cannot be lumped in with MGS forum members.

  8. Thanks everyone for the new thread name suggestions, it has been renamed. The new thread name refers to reducing blow up holes. I know they will never go away, but i consistently have blow-up holes, at least 1 per front 9 and 1 per back 9, and they are usually worse than double bogey. I will explain more in another post.

  9. Excellent 'first' review JNoble. Good information and insightful comments that will help others considering aftermarket covers (like myself ). Many of your review points resonated with me... the magnetic closure, for example. That has always been my preference on putter covers, as velcro never seems to close correctly, and has a tendency to slip off the putter easier if not secured correctly... strong magnets in my experience reduce this issue significantly. So that is a great point you made. I also agree with your comments on the look (even from afar by looking at the pics) about the material used for the putter cover compared to the pebble material used for the hybrid... night and day from my point of view. Quality of construction looks great (which is what I would expect from Craftsman) which you outlined. Lastly... never too many pictures Nicely done JN!!

Abysmal, absolutely abysmal. Just got back from a golf trip to Pinehurst where I played well. One week later and I could NOT hit a club. So frustrating.

Owen didn't want to play today so I walked eighteen at River Heights today. Probably should have stayed home. Weather was great; sunny with a good breeze. Course was deserted for some reason. Just a great setup for success. And then I showed up. Had four really good drives and my wood and hybrid were really good too. Everything else was hot garbage . Just couldn't make clean contact. Pretty equal mix of thins and fats. I was swaying pretty badly and couldn't help myself. Ah well...given the chance to do it again, I would be out there every time!! Shot 54/51 105 (+33). On a positive note, I would have been pretty good with this score a year ago.

    How'd you play?

On Friday afternoon myself and a friend decided to play a quick 18 holes. With our home course being a 9 hole setup we each played with two balls, one from each tee box to get 18 holes done in just under 2 hours. The last time I played I had some real issues with a very flat backswing and wanted to work on that to get my swing back on plane, so focused mainly on that and didn't hit any of the shots at 100%. Surprisingly it really worked for me, even though I putted like a clown, I carded a 4 over par 76. Equaling my best round for the last 2 years. On a side note, a bright orange Srixon really flies of a driver and 3 wood. I didn't play over the weekend as it was super hot (107 degrees F), so decided to rather go and drive in the Kruger park looking for the big 5 in an dual airconditioned minibus.

  17. I’ve been accumulating gift cards and rewards points at various golf stores. Lately I’ve been cashing them in in preparation for a ball fitting project / simulator build for winter garage play. Here’s the current stash that will be going up against a variety of Maxfli balls. TBD on additional ball purchases but it’s a start!

  18. Love the iron covers - I've got a set from Craftsman as well. Maybe we can convince the die hard " I don't use iron cover golfers" to try them. My Cobra Speedzones look brand new after 3 yrs and hundreds of rounds. BTW, you're 8i is out of sequence - it goes after the 7i

  21. I started my practice with pitch shots, really trying to dial my 40-75 yard shots with either my 60/56. Then moved into my pitching wedge and hit about 30 shots to a 130 yard pin/ green complex. I was working on my fades and draws, then some partial shots, I even got the pole a couple times. My irons and wedges have never been as good, and with hitting 14 greens yesterday it is really starting to show. Then I moved to my driver, and I’m really trying to hit fades, I didn’t hit many fairways because I wanted to play a fade, but like yesterday it just stayed straight or fell to the left. I can get it to move 15 yards to the right but I don’t like it, or I hit it out of the heel and I don’t like the distance loss or shape of either of those options. So I stopped fighting it and just hit high draws, I don’t think with my current driver setup I can hit a rotated strong fade. I know it sounds ridiculous that I’m disappointed with a high draw, but I don’t like the big miss with draw. For now I’ll take what I have and keep working. Then I finished up with some much needed putting. I worked on my lag putting and 3 and 6 foot putts.

Played Sat. In Eastern WA, Played Rock Island golf course outside Wenatchee, WA. Haven't played it in a long time.. Wind was howling, Did not score well, but hit the ball well, shot a 90. 41/49.. Had a couple of miscues, but pretty happy with Ball striking across all clubs.. Driving the Ball consistently in the 250ish range with a couple around 275... The biggest issue I had was putting, the greens were punched and sanded.. I had putts that ended up short, I had putts that took turns. I only made 2 putts outside of 2 feet.. If give myself 2 putts on Half the holes I 3 putted, Just half, I would save 5 strokes.. But I spent the day with my Father in Law Drinking beer and golfing... Sure as hell beats shopping with the wife and Mother in Law.. LOL.. I was not pleased that the course did not give me a heads up when I made the tee time.. but Oh well still a great day..

Final before work nine of the year this morning. It is just getting too dark in the mornings to see (thankfully No. 10 goes into the sunrise so I can track the ball in a general direction): Tough start bogeying the first four holes. Holes 10, 11 and 12 are probably the toughest three-hole stretch on the course and they always derail my rounds it seems. Battled a bad case of the hooks, but I strung together pars on 14, 15 and 16. On 17, I hooked my drive, chunked an 8 iron to the front fringe of the green, pulled 58 to chip and dropped it in the cup for birdie. No. 18 I proceeded to hit one of my best drives all season, a beautiful draw that eeked out close to 290 yards even though the ball landed in the heavy and wet right rough (a good spot to miss on the hole). Unfortunately, I chunked my wedge to the front of the green and ended up three-putting for a bogey. 40. Reflecting on progress this year, for the season on my nine hole rounds, I've only shot worse than 42 twice (43 once, 44 once) and I'm averaging 39.4. That's a two stroke reduction since last year. Really happy to see that.

  25. So serious question: How do you intend to hit your scoring goals when you change equipment so much? I used to do the same thing until I realized that constantly changing equipment, while fun, often hurt my golf game. Once I got my bag fit to me I stopped switching clubs and my handicap dropped too

  26. One specific area that i need to work on is course strategy off the tee. I play the same course every week, so there is no reason for me not to have a strategy. Up until about two months ago, I would hit driver on every par 4. Main reason being that I didn't have much confidence in any other long club off the tee. Now i am confident hitting a 3 wood. For me, I believe the right times not to hit driver are: 1. When driver brings into play hazards or fairway bunkers 2. When i need to avoid a big right miss that would be OB, hazard, or something else really bad On point 2, not saying my 3 wood is more accurate, its just that I tend to have a different type of miss with a 3 wood than a driver. I definitely can still miss right with a 3 wood, but I don't remember a time where i hit a 3 wood with that same type of huge push slice that can be very punishing on certain holes. To add to point 2, there's one specific hole that i can think of that i tend to get really punished on, even with a slight right miss. With the miss on that hole, you either will lose your ball, hit it into the red stake area, or be in a terrible uphill or side hill lie with trees that even makes a punch out difficult at times.

Ended up going low the following day for an 80. 37 on the front 43 on the back. I was really hot to start out +1 through 6. It felt good to get in the board with 20 stableford points on the front. Had I kept up the pace in the back me and my partner would have won that day! We only finished 3 points out of first.

  29. Heard peak viewership was all of 90k ppl... That is half of what is was last even when they had the whole weekend to themselves with no NFL or anything else. Big picture that is so few people turning on to watch. They made need to find a better platform to stream on, because going to weird timezones are certainly not going to help those number improve. The broadcast even made a joke about it when it happened...

  30. I have noticed the magnet on my Evnroll putter cover seems to be getting weaker after a few years, so the jury is still out on that closure method for me. Good looking head covers, and a very nice post with all the picture detail.

  31. Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! I should have mentioned that they have multiple putter headcover options with stitched detailing. I did not realize when picking out the cover that I did, that it was screen printed. I was more looking at what would look cool with my golf bag, and I liked the flag design. I love the magnetic closure. Nothing wrong with the velcro on my TM spider cover, but the magnet is clean. I have noticed that with my velcro closure, if I don't have it lined up correctly it'll pull at some of the stitching. They have some putter covers with the pebbled material and they look great.

  34. Again, he was on Day 4 so I understand. Guy was at local Golf Galaxy the day before so he had seen a lot of atuff i assume. The spin troubled me, a negative AOA with a standard spin rate was weirder. It kinda is what it is Tom. I learned a lesson that I should have learned from the trip, if yoi have a guy who you trust, why divert from him?

  38. Golf gives and takes away. After a couple really good practice sessions, yesterday was absolutely terrible. The range was all torn up and I just couldn't seem to get it together. Out of the 50 or so balls I hit, I can count on one hand the number of shots that felt good. Things were just off. I think it was largely related to pushing a little too hard at the gym earlier in the afternoon. My lower back was feeling it a bit from the deadlifts. Went over to the chipping area and just worked on chipping and pitching to avoid getting too much into my own head. I feel like my swing has gotten to a point where it is solid enough, so I don't want to go trying to make corrections on a bad day and screw up the other things I've been working on. Honestly spending more time in the short game area is where I should be anyway. Set up the net this afternoon to hit some balls before I put the clubs away while I'm traveling for work starting tomorrow. Still a little sore in the lower back and a little off as a result, but much better than yesterday. Ended the session hitting a few balls with the club that has been giving me some trouble recently, the 18 degree hybrid. First couple were pretty bad. I've been thinking that my hybrids have felt too long recently, so I choked up about an inch and suddenly I was ripping it. Now to let things settle while I'm in Florida for a week away from golf.

  39. Thats a good question and valid issue. Part of the fun for me is new equipment, so i understand that could have a negative impact, and im ok with that. However, my equipment buying habits have changed a bit. With drivers, i always end up fitting into whatever the “max ls” version is, and i don’t find too much difference when buying the new version in any negative way. With irons, i’ve landed on the fact i play my best with mizunos. I am going to be making the jump from 921 hm to 923 hm pros, which is different but not a huge leap in difference. and i am actually sticking with my ping pld custom putter, no urge to buy any putters for gaming. Did buy that betti hive putter but thats not going to be a gamer for me, its a wall hanger.

  46. Laughable hole for me on Saturday. Par 5. If you hit it far enough the ball hits a downslope and can really run out. Well, with a little wind at the back, I did just that and hit the dry New Jersey soil and left myself a measly 117 yards into the green (almost a 400 yard drive!!) had a straight forward gap wedge into the green -- which I prcoeeded to SHANK almost pin high into the adjacent fairway (ball flew over some tall native grass). I was pissed, but I grabbed my 58 and did the walk of shame to down to my ball. Had about 75 yards left and I could only see the top of the flag stick because the shot was so up hill. Hit it to 4 feet and made my birdie. Just how I drew it up on the tee box! Drive of a life time, shank, incredible lob wedge, tap in birdie!
