  1. A chicken farmer went to a local bar, sat next to a woman, and ordered a glass of champagne. The woman perked up and said, “How about that? I just ordered a glass of champagne, too!” “This is a special day for me too, I am also celebrating,” said the woman. “What a coincidence!” said the farmer. As they clinked glasses, he added, “What are you celebrating?” “My husband and I have been trying to have a child, and today my gynecologist told me that I am pregnant!” “What a coincidence!” said the man. “I’m a chicken farmer, and for years my hens were infertile, but today they are all laying fertilized eggs.” “That’s great!” said the woman, “How did your chickens become fertile?” “I used a different rooster,” he replied. The woman smiled, clinked his glass and said, “What a coincidence!

    How'd you play?

Played in bitter cold yesterday; sunny but cold!! High 31º; low 16º Course didn't open until 12:30pm after a frost delay, and they did a shotgun start so everyone could finish before dark... which we did having to wait on the group in front of us most of the way. We started on the par 4 #11. First real round on greens where a ball that landed on the front of a green ran to the back... or off!! I hit some crisp iron shots and felt pretty good shooting an 81 with only one double... that came on a 3-putt; I had two other 3-putts. Worst round for 3-putts on my course this year; which cost me another round in the 70's. The greens were frozen underneath the surface; ball marks were evident, but couldn't be repaired. Didn't play today as the sun didn't come out; only 29º and we have an air stagnation advisory.

    "One Round in Kenya"

My family and I just returned from Kenya. We visited Amboseli NP, Nairobi NP, Tsavo NP(also seeing where the events from the film "The Ghost and the Darkness" took place). We actually got in a day early to cope with "jet lag", but our trip planner was able to get my older daughter and I a tee time at the Sigona Golf Club. So even though with the time change it was like we were teeing off at 3AM, we teed off and walked the 18 holes with our caddies. They were both tremendous. It is a round of golf that ..... I WILL NEVER FORGET!!!

  4. So when I clicked on this thread, it took me to posts of October 18th. Wow, I knew it had been a while since I had anything to post. So here you go. These were on order for a bit, but just arived. Hopefully will get them out for our Turkey Shoot Scramble on Friday. Temps supposed to be mid 50's but raining. Got them with SteelFiber I80 shafts. Had a chance to hit a few 6 irons on the range today, and the shaft did exactly what they do in my Gen 5, just start online and hold it very well. Such a tight dispersion. Better than any shaft I can recall hitting. As for the irons, tough to tell much hitting into a 10 mph wind in mid 30's temp, but they felt great, except for the first couple that I hit while getting warmed up. But pretty consistent high fade, just what I'm looking for.

  5. Actually... Me and my shovel... and by the time Sunday morning rolled around, Town Plow pushed in the street snow across the bottom widening the street by about 4 feet and drifting from the westerly winds with upwards of 30mph gusts completely filled in that space on the left in front of the snow covered vehicles. You gotta be tough to be a WNYer snowbirds are those who retired the field of battle from winter weather... Guess what keeps me fit for shoveling? That's right, GOLF!

  6. Played around with a few speed feels in the garage yesterday afternoon. I was able to hit 102 with the 6 iron and 117 with the driver a few times. Nothing sustained as of yet, but some thoughts on what I'm working on in this quest. A focus for me moving forward is going to be getting more width in my backswing. I think I can grab a few MPH with that, and I also think it might solve a few other problems I've been having with my swing. For example, notice how "narrow" I am at club shaft parallel, with my hands barely passing my thigh (sorry for the rear view, I can't film face on in my garage easily): Compare that to some of the higher swing speed guys out there (Rory, Drew Cooper, Kyle Berkshire): Just something I'm going to key in on over the next few sessions.

  8. Its really common that a home viewer will have substantially greater expertise and a more appropriate viewing angle than an actual trained rules expert standing a few feet from the player.

  9. I kept telling my guys that you shouldn't be playing driver, then three wood on every par 4. Is it really that much fun playing every hole as a par 5? One of my more outgoing (read louder) golf buddies moved up this year and has had a much easier time scoring. He tries to get the shorter guys to move up frequently. Just get a couple up there and have them team up on the rest? Lastly, you could just move up there until they join you. Then move back quietly or when they complain that you are hitting it too far to play the reds. I deal with this all the time but we have quite a few forward tee'ers in my group. A couple of guys know they should move up but it is the principal of giving up I guess.

  10. This is a topic I feel passionately about. I was listening the to the "No Putts Given" podcast with Lou Stagner (data analyst at Arccos among other titles) and at the 31:00 mark he mentions a very simple formula for what courses to play: Your 5 iron carry * 33 or 34 is the total course distance. I love this idea. Mostly because I bet many people (mainly men) are playing courses longer than that. For me, I carry a 5 iron about 180 yds. So that is 180 * 33 = 5940 yds. I carry a driver 260 yds. I have no problem playing sub 6,000 yds. It is more fun and, guess what, I still don't shoot below par very often. I would say if the majority of your golfing group is breaking 80 from the whites then they should stay there. If not, what are they afraid of? They might make more birdies? They might have more fun? The average second shot distance for a middle of the pack PGA tour player (distance-wise) is 140 yds on a par 4. That's probably a PW or soft 9 iron. If that is how we challenge a TOUR PRO then why should weekly golfers be subjecting themselves to stiffer test than that? Pride?

  11. I'm the oldest and shortest hitter in any group I play with. I got fed up to the point where I thought about quitting the game. I simply announced, and continue to announce when playing with anyone for the first time that I play a forward tee. I then select whatever is closest to (without going over, sort of like "The Price Is Right") 5500 yards. No one has ever objected, no one has ever called me names in a serious way. When/if I get ribbed I simply say, "you're more than welcome to join me, come on up." On some courses that have black/white/yellow/red I'll be using the yellow tees. On a three tee box course I'm happily at the forward tee. Once I accepted "who I am" as a golfer the game became fun again. Except for those damned three putts...

How about post a link to the video. No news articles indicating anything questionable about this weekends tournament and with her leading the tournament and all the cameras an official would have noticed.

It was 50" thereabouts at my house just 3 miles north of Highmark Stadium where it was over 70", brother in law was closer to the all-time snowfall record for NY State of 77" Lake Effect Snowstorm was Friday night into Saturday. This was Saturday evening after shoveling one side of the driveway and did the other side Sunday. Now you know! GO BILLS!!!

  14. Check in #1 - 110 mph Instructor has me focussing on shifting towards the target in the downswing. Hanging back, jumping up/extending and rotating. Trying to add that on top of the Drew Cooper moves. The smother hooks persist from the end of the season. But I’m going to try to keep hitting the ball as hard as possible.

  17. I'm the coordinator of a golf group that plays once a week. We have 18 guys in the group. Most, including me, are retired and 65+. Week play a local course three weeks in a row, then take field trip to other courses in the area on the fourth week. At our home course, there are three tee boxes - blue (6565 yards), white (6026 yards), and red (5286 yards). We play the white tees. You know what's coming... Some of the guys can hit drives in the 230 - 245 range (I'm fortunate to still being that group). Some struggle to get 200 yards on their drives - let's call them limited hitters. Golf can be frustrating, but it's especially hard when you have no chance of getting a green in regulation. It also leads higher scores and to slower play. Last winter, I broached the subject of changing tee boxes to make the game more enjoyable. That conversation didn't get very far. One week, on a windy day when the fairways were damp and soft, I said, "Let's play the red tees today." So we did. At the end of the round, the torches and pitchforks came out. Some thought it was OK to play the red tees when the weather was bad, especially hitting into the wind on a long par 3, but several made it clear that they were not happy, including some of the limited hitters. Over time, I kept chipping away at the issue and was able to convince the group that, at least, we should shorten two holes - a 402 yard par 4 and a 541 yard par 5. So, now we play the red tees on those two holes. No complaints! So, I suggested playing a modified red/white tee box combo, but they said that would too confusing to keep track of on the course. So, here's my analysis - male ego. The red tees are the "ladies tees". So, do I continue on the quest to make golf fun again, or close my eyes when I see a 192 yard drive on a 395 yard par 4. I have a few ideas to try, but maybe some of you have better suggestions.

  18. I never looked at it as "giving up" given that I didn't start by playing the tips... I looked at is as "making a needed adjustment" which made it a lot easier once I reached my point of frustration. I don't ask for a senior discount but when the pro shop asks if I'm a senior I thank them for being so perceptive...
    3 points
  19. You said the group has 18 members. One of those gents is going to reach the point where he says "to hell with it" and either moves up or simply quits. THAT is when the change in policy, if it's to take place, will happen.
    3 points
  20. Would the course consider adding in senior tees? My club has 4 sets, Blue 6763, White 6254, Gold 5331, and Red 5265 But even though you are shortening up by 900 yards going from white to gold, the elevation changes still challenge you as well as where they place the tee boxes. On many holes you are still playing position golf. Meaning from the white you hit driver and from the gold you hit a 3 or 5 wood because you have to be in position on a dog leg to go for the green. Your second shot can sometimes be the same distance to the green. On a few other holes the distance is exactly the same from the tee box, but the angle is different as the tee boxes are on different sides of the fairway so to speak. I can understand the reluctancy from some members of your group hitting from the reds. A set of gold tees would make them feel better.
    3 points
  21. As a rule of thumb, consistent with what you posted, I figure a second shot on a par 4 should be 150 yards or less given a "normal" drive for the golfer in question.

    "One Round in Kenya"

Hello: I am very pleased to read about your trip to Kenya. I am originally from Kenya, now residing in Canada and have played Sigona a couple of times. You must have enjoyed the fact that you were playing at 5000+ feet above sea level and the ball travelling a lot further. It's a beautiful country with many great golf courses. Thank you for sharing the pictures. Nostalgic for me. KK

  26. Yeah, we'll see where this goes. Some of what I've been referencing also includes the height of the hands at P2 in relation to the belt line and hands in relation to feet (which is in relation to shoulders at address). I've barely rotated my shoulders or hips at P2 and my hands are well below my waist line. Pretty sure I'm just picking the club up and setting it (which was originally a band-aid given to me by my coach to stop dragging the club under and inside a few years back). Going to try the thought of pushing a 2x4 as far back as I can with the clubhead. Hoping to get in the garage again tonight.

  27. Last Friday I had to do my Stack workout on a somewhat slick basketball court floor, and my speeds really suffered and maybe my motivation with it. VERY relieved and excited to hit a new set PR of 109 with the 195g set today! This time through Full Speed Spectrum has been more of a grind, but I'm pleased to see I'm still getting some benefit from it. My Grit score is about to take a hit...can't do my second to last workout until next Monday due to Thanksgiving travel. Honestly though, not too concerned...I suspect the rest will do me good. We'll see.

  28. Front loader arrived on the street just about sunrise and opened it up one bucket wide. Much better than Snovember 2014 when a similar snowfall had us shoveled to the (nonexistent) street before it was similarly opened by a front loader 5 days after the storm passed. 1977 was delivering the Buffalo Evening News as the presses did not stop printing through that whole storm, we had to go out into those blustery conditions every afternoon once the papers were delivered. Streets were down to frozen ice but snow was drifted to house height and some required climbing the drifts to slide down, duck under the porch roof and put the paper in the mailbox at the feet that was normally too high to look inside (and I am 6' or 72"/182cm). Kept the house closed up with access to outdoors through the downwind attached garage door where all snowy clothing was removed, fireplace kept glowing with cherrywood smelled great, well stocked basement food shelves and vault size topload freezer with no loss of power made it just one great adventure. January 1984 as member of NYARNG was activated to dig out South Buffalo streets socked in with up to 8 foot drifts in neighborhoods where there is no room to put snow from the streets. 12 hour shift commander so spent the whole event outdoors except for down time at the Armory. Local news reporters came to find me for daily updates, awesome times to remember...

  29. .... Just crazy weather. In '77 I was working at WZZD in Philly and thankfully the girl with the shift after me made it to the station before the serious snow started. Station was about 1/4 mile down it's own driveway and we got snowed in. Our cars disappeared beneath the snow and we had to trade off 6 hour shifts for 3 days til they could get a plow to clear the road/driveway. Ran out of coins and with no food we had to break in to the snack machine. Might sound great to a teenager but 3 days on chips and candy really sucked. Glad you had the equipment to conquer the massive amounts of snow!

  30. ... Sometime in the 80's I had rehearsal and it was -83 in Chicago. Yup 83* below zero windchill. Obviously everyone was advised not to go outside. I started planning my departure that day. BTW, this was before cell phones and when I got to rehearsal there was a sign on the door "Rehearsal cancelled due to dangerous cold". It was a 3 block walk and one of my eyes froze shut when I blinked and thankfully saw on the news not to try and open it until I got indoors and thawed out naturally or I could have torn my eyelid off!

  35. Cold, very cold around here, stay indoors cold except for a late afternoon grub hunt to Jersey Mike's yesterday. 3 seasoned gents were in line in front of me each wearing a Bill blue hoodie and a blue game overshirt inscribed with Allen. I knew the Bills were coming to town for our Thanksgiving game and thought these guys are way overboard coming to town so early for the turkey game and wearing game gear to boot, but I didn't know the Bills were at Ford Field yesterday playing the Brownies due to snow in the Buffalo area. They said their area got about 70 inches of snow and they came through Canada to see their team play. Nice fans, easy to chat with, and still can't wrap my head around a 70-inch snow assault, never seen it before.

Although I used the VA for medical and dental care for a few years after I got out of the USMC in 1969, I have not done so in many years. Because I constantly heard how bad VA medical care is in NJ and the Philadelphia area, I have avoided going to the VA.

And Viktor is reported to be eyeing the i230's... can hardly blame him... their purdy . We have a huge, multi-OEM demo day coming up and the i230's are on my short list. As for pro's not playing the stock, off-the shelf versions of irons, I feel this discussion is splitting frog hair. Certainly the OEM's make unique adjustments for tour players who, unlike 99% of golfers, can actually notice the difference. They no doubt sort out heads and shafts from production runs for their use. I'd venture to say if one has the money, they'll build you a custom-custom set of clubs. Much like fly fisherman I've guided who cannot cast their $5000 rod much further than the front of the boat... well, you get the picture.

    Forged vs. Cast

... I think back in the day, cavity back clubs were cast and most MB's were forged. There was an appreciable difference in feel. Once they started forging CB's (Z101's come to mind) there was no difference in feel (and sound). Many cast irons back then felt dead to me and I just couldn't play them for that reason alone. Modern Multi material irons really blur the lines as the Engineers are trying to provide players the best of both worlds. The polymer filling and elastomer inserts produce a feel very similar to a forged MB. Add to that the softest feeling irons I have played are my MIM Tour irons with elastomer inserts and MetalInjectionMolding which side by side with my Z Forged MB's are just a hair softer. The T100S I reviewed for MGS were also amazingly soft feeling and if I just saw them at address when I hit them, I would have thought they were a solid forged iron. ... I think the bottom line is OEMs are making every iron feel pretty darned good. Some feel a little better than others but even my Forged Tecs feel like a traditional forged iron even though the head is hollow. That said I don't play GI or SGI irons and they might not have come quite as far as Players irons because most using them demand a softer traditional forged feel. But if I am in the market for new irons, cast or forged doesn't enter into my decision, just how they feel and perform.

I spoke to some recently and discovered he had worked for a VA clinic near me and naturally the subject of military service came up. He asked if I received any VA service, and I told him I did not and didn’t think I qualified. He assured me I did. So I went to the clinic, applied for service disability hearing loss. I was asked to schedule a hearing test just over a month later. I had the test, and I was told to expect a 6-8 week wait for any further action. Then in just over two weeks I received a letter stating the VA accepted responsibility due to my MOS for 50% of my hearing loss in each ear and 10% of my tinnitus and the VA is going to pay me a monthly stipend. I was, and still am, shocked since it took so little time to process the data and since it’s been so long since I got out of the Army in ’74.

KJ does have some custom wedges but his Apex Irons and Callaway woods look just like retail models. I don’t consider lead weight a “custom club” . His KBS hybrid shafts look OTR. What are the distinct differences that I should be able to see? If they are too visible, they should be listed on the conforming list otherwise they are potentially illegal. Here is the USGA photo and markings for the irons and based on what you are indicating, there are visible differences . https://www.usga.org/InfoClubsDB/ResultDisplay.aspx?val=Apex TCB (Chrome) (2) we all agree that some of the top players get one off custom clubs, but someone like let’s say Nick Hardy plays clubs that are hand picked from OTR heads and shafts not clubs manufactured just for him. Some may even get prototype clubs or clubs/components that never get released to the pubic but that isn’t something you see with every pro golfer as you indicate.
