    How'd you play?

First post here. Today was my first 18 in quite a while. I might have been able to golf once in December, but I have spent quite a lot of time on the simulator this winter. Some friends and I each kicked in $5000 and built a very nice Uneekor EYE XO with GS Pro and hitting bay from Gung Ho Golf. Additionally, I recently got a lesson that has helped me immensely in straightening out my drives. Interestingly, as a lefty, I think the Uneekor interprets my slices worse than in real life. Or maybe today I just had a good day. Either way, I feel like the practice, lessons and data have helped a lot. Last spring I kept my scores for handicapping for men’s league. I generally score about 110 +/-. If I have 2 pars, I feel pretty good. Today my drives were much straighter and even my slices were much less dramatic. I had 5 pars and 1 birdie. I felt pretty proud. That’s a very good round for me. I wish I had kept score because it likely would have been my personal best. And I was able to do it with my 8 year old son (who found his PW in the lost club tub after we thought it lost). It was a good day.

    How'd you play?

So that was interesting... I had a great round. No doubles, no birdies just a par and bogey fest today. However it was bloody cold! 32 degrees winds around 15 mph or more and well after the 6th hole it started to snow. I think I told myself at least twice a hole, what are you doing? Why are you out here? However I was putting the PXG 0211 in play for the first time and ... well more on that in another thread. I was also striking my irons great. So pure... which gave me another thought. Maybe the key to my toe strikes is playing in miserable conditions, where the weather is so cold that a missed strike will cause so much pain I would want to quit... but in all seriousness I think I misstruck 2 irons the whole time. I found a swing and rhythm that just worked. In part because of being I was playing alone and could just play and not have to wait for groups or anything. It all just clicked... except for putting. The putter went ice cold... and I actually mean ice cold. Ice actually froze onto the putter. It was actually a lot of fun and such a nice change from the awful toe strikes I had been struggling with. Thanks to a bit of a side suggestion from @GolfSub70 about length. I simply really went to the tip tip to of the grip and it seemed to click. Also because I was wearing about 8 layers I couldn't go on a huge back swing and think this also helped. Either way a fun cold round in the snow... silly Jamie.

  3. What a thread, I’m through the first 2 pages. It’s going to take me a week to get through all 14/15 pages. my alarm is set for 4:30am. That used to be sleeping in for me, job change helped that. I’ve been meaning to wake up earlier and get to the gym, but the last 10/15 years has been a struggle for that. I have been taking 15-20 min to do some hyperbolic stretching and a few yoga moves to help with the back. I'm a coffee guy and it just depends on what went on the previous day or upcoming if I have 2 cups or 8. Pic of my cup attached. Work day starts at 6am and done at 2:30. I manage 3 warehouses that are 40 minutes apart from each other. I get windshield time in between them plus any other deliveries I need to do. I try to stop at the local range for some swing work when my back lets me. My side gig is I officiate HS football, lacrosse and baseball. Lacrosse is taking a back seat as it’s is pretty tough on a body that was abused in its youth through the 40’s. love the stories and everybody’s different life styles.

  4. Well we pulled the trigger. I've used my Stroke Lab for three seasons and liked it, but it was just too soft for me personally. I was convinced I'd end with a scotty or toulon, but I got to try the GTX this past weekend and pretty much fell in love with the stability, feel, and shape. I've been fit recently too so I knew these were my specs. Hopefully more made putts coming in 2023! (Not to mention the spider is 100 bucks less than the other options, so I picked up a dozen prov1x's to try out this spring)

  5. I took a few clubs from the top of my bag to PGASS today, so I could gauge my gapping and distances from my lowest FW down through my hybrids. I also wanted to see if my buddy who works there could tell me if I needed to adjust the settings on my Titleist 4&5 hybrids as their system is a little confusing to me. They’re really nice but I wondered if they were optimized. He did tweak the 24* a bit, and now it’s even better. Everything went pretty well, and I left there very happy with my bag set up. I actually have 3 other clubs, a driver, Hy-wood and putter I also really like as backups. My irons are at least as good, probably better than anything else I’ve tried, and my wedges are really the best I’ve played. My point? I’m in a rare place right now… I’m not looking to change a thing, and I have no interest in looking. The only club that interested me, and the only new release I’ve tried was the 430 Max driver, and my 425 (albeit a new one with a higher loft) beat it out. What am I going to do with all the money I’ll be saving?

  6. Could be the placebo effect or it just might help me claw my way towards fewer putts but I ordered a new putter. While killing some time the other week at Golf Galaxy I decided to try a few putters to see if anything stood out. Initially, I didn't see anything that differed greatly from my gamer regardless of shape, materials, or really anything else. Then, I grabbed an Odyssey Tri Hot 5k Two... I've honestly been steering clear of Odyssey putters for several years and didn't know anything about the 5k putters. Immediately, I liked the way the club looked behind the ball as the black steel face with white insert and muted gray aluminum rear caused setup and alignment to just snap into place. I stroked a few putts and couldn't help to notice how nicely the ball rolled and how good distance control was - if the ball didn't go in it finished within mere inches of the cup consistently. I walked out of the store did some research to see what the putter was about and look at price but had zero intention of making a purchase until later this season if at all. A few days ago I was at PGA Tour Superstore and grabbed the putter they had in stock. Same thing happened. They also had some of the new mallet models so I rolled putts with the #7. Both produced similar results with ease but I found the Two fit my eye much better - most likely because I've been playing the same shape for at least 2 seasons now. Anyway, went home and looked for the best deal I could find which was $310 at 2ndSwing for a mint-condition putter until I remembered about Callaway Pre-Owned. Holy crap! Was able to get a "like new" putter in the length I wanted with the grip I wanted for $260 shipped! I can't wait to put this thing into play and see how it performs on the course. If I don't like it for some reason, I can utilize Callaway's 90-day buyback guarantee or possibly sell it for more than I paid on eBay.

    How'd you play?

I think I played my butt off and had a REALLY nice round today. I BROKE 80 (not by much and it wasn't real pretty- but it all looks the same on the score card). The front 9 was real good- 6 pars, 2 bogeys and a birdie (chipped one in on 5). Back 9 was decent all things considered- (a GENTLE Kansas breeze decided to show up and wreak a little havoc) one double, 4 bogies (one on a par 5 made me not too happy) and a birdie. 8 fairways, 8 GIRs and 30 putts. Oh yeah- the 4H that has been trying to make nice and stay in my bag- has pretty much earned permanent full-time residency and a renewed contract extension. It pulled off a few really unexpected shots today. I needed to hit a draw to get out of the trees (my LEAST favorite shot shape and one that I have difficulty with). The club (and I) pulled off a beautiful draw and with a little CPL (cart path love) ended up about 10 feet on the green. It also hit a really sweet fade that ended up about 5 yards off the green and I chipped it in. AND....I also figured out that it can go straight too

  12. ... Graphite iron shafts surpassed steel long ago. Too many older players have an opinion based on the original OEM graphite iron shafts that were light with very high torque designed for slower swing speeds that needed more height. But once Aldila released the original Tour NV as an alternative to Dynamic Gold with the same 130gm weight but even less torque at 1.5* the barn door was wide open. While steel obviously gets the job done their price has risen and the difference between the top steel shafts and graphite isn't that much and in some cases steel is more expensive. The best ball strikers in the world on the LPGA predominantly play Steelfiber shafts including Nelly Korda, JY Ko, Lydia Ko and hard hitting A Jutanugarn. They obviously get their shafts for free and I doubt many will be switching to Axiom so it will be interesting to see what the players that more resemble most better Ams swing play in their irons. This is where I think the Axiom might hurt the iron market as some will assume the $125 price tag is indicative of graphite iron shaft prices. ... I think the best way to view graphite iron shafts is compare them to driver shafts. There is only so much you can do with a steel driver shaft which is why they have been completely replaced. Graphite can vary any parameter like weight, flex point, tip stiffness, torque and over all feel. OEMs can change one parameter or several so the ability to build a shaft that fits a particular player is limitless and much more accurate than steel. When a super tech nerd like Dechambeau chooses graphite for his irons you know there is a technical superiority.

Monday morning 7:00 Tee and FOGGY. We had 6 groups split between 2 courses. Did I mention it was FOGGY, Starter told us we were playing at our own peril, we’re old so what does it matter. Well our 4some played quickly & pretty good for never seeing a flag and there was an Eagle, legitimate on Par 4. We never saw the groups in back of us until we got to the diner and there they were having breakfast. They played 3 holes and bailed out!! Whiners. Anyway decent morning morning I had mostly Pars but one stupid a$$ double. In our 4some nobody lost a ball in that fog, amazing.

  23. ... I think friendlier and more mature is a good description too. Someone started a thread on WRX about comfortable shoes for walkers and I posted a picture of my Ecco Biom 3's and there were quite a few posts ridiculing them for being ugly and a senior shoe for someone with no fashion sense that didn't mind looking stupid. My ego is not dependent on others opinions and easy enough for me to laugh off ignorance but others reading the thread would be put off off Ecco shoes because of the comments. Sad because they are the longest lasting and most comfortable shoes I have played in. ... I think most MGS members do a good job of keeping negative opinions to themselves. Same shoe thread here would just include peoples personal experience (good and bad) and what shoes they like or are thinking of. I just can't see multiple members jumping in to call the latest Adidas shoes ugly and they would never buy or wear them, a judgement coming from just looking at a picture. I think most here want to both learn from others or offer their knowledge, not bash anything they don't care for personally.

Sun and above freezing yesterday melted off all the ice not hiding from the sun and corgis again rule their backyard size kingdom. Clear skies ahead of weather moving in this afternoon. Precipitation forecasted to make it a wet week with first inches of rain between now and inches of snow end of the week. Cheers Mother Nature

    How'd you play?

Got home from my round around noon and now watching the Honda classic. I was pretty pleased with my round today. Considering all the rained out weekends we were having I only managed 54 holes this year so far. Todays 18 made me feel that it won't take to long to get the rust off. The front 9 left me with 8 pars and 1 bogey. The very first two holes I had make able birdies but the putts broke more than I played them. The back 9 continued on like the front with mostly pars. I was 2 over on the back. All my woods were behaving and my irons were all on line. I did come up short a few times by a yard or two, but my chipping was good leaving me with easy putts. My two bogies were dumb mistakes. I went over the green on one hole requiring a tough high shot off hard pan to get back up, then two putted. The other was that dam 18th hole again (3rd time now). Par 5, green surrounded by water. Driver, hybrid to 80 yards. I knew from experience that flag hunting on this hole is a no no. Everything breaks right and even if your on the green it can roll off into the water. So I played to the left side and found the left bunker. Now I was left in a hard sand trap, green running away from me with water all around. My out was ok but short. I didn’t commit to the shot. Then a two putt. 75 for the day. I'll take it for February and still getting to know the course.

Finally, a decent day without anything else going on and was able to get out on the course. My regular course is closed on Mondays, so a friend and I played Granada Golf Club here in the Village (one of 9 courses). Due to all the rain we've had of late, the course was cart path only and really sloppy. Drove the ball well, irons okay, my usual crappy chipping, and putted okay. Had one triple bogey when I hit a pitch too cleanly (a rare occurrence) that traveled too far, went off the back of the green, rolled down the slope, and found its way into the pond to shoot a 43 on the front. 39 on the back to shoot 10 for the round. Not too unhappy, given the course conditions (except for that darn triple!!!!). Good time, none the less!

  34. I'm a huge Steelfiber fan because not only did I pick up yards and spin, but my golfer's elbow went away almost immediately after I made the switch. In my experience they are a little harder to work with from a fitting/club-building perspective, but overall they're a superior shaft (at least for me). I'm as curious about this new Fuji offering as the rest of you...

    Sub70 golf

I bought a Sub70 putter for my son who wanted to try out a center-shafted wide blade. The quality of this putter is way above what I expected for the price. I haven't tried their other clubs, just the putter, but so far I'm very very impressed and would go to them for other items. As a lefty I appreciate the Left-handed options also. Not all of these smaller DTC brands have LH options. So kudos to them.

  45. Well I made a spur of the moment purchase, and bought a very lightly used set of Mizuno T22 “denim copper” wedges. 54°, 58°, and 62°. Yep, you read that right, 62°. That’s what I thought… but, they came on Patterson Kinetixx trajectory shafts. I got all three for basically the cost of one new one, so I just couldn’t pass em up. It was pouring rain, so i have only got 1/2 a round on them, and really only kinda hit them once or twice each. So I don’t have much of a report. But got one good hit each and they feel sweet- but good lord, that 62° was an interesting bird- I had about a 20 yard shot, over a trap to a short pin, so I figured hey! What a perfect opportunity! so I took about a 1/2 swing that would have gone long with the 60°, and doggone if it didn’t softly pop up nice and tight. Kind of a specialty wedge, probably doesn’t go more than 40-50 yds. they are 12° of bounce on the 54-58° wedges, with a d and c grind? That’s fine for the 54°, but not used to that much on the 58°. The 62° has the X grind, and 8° of bounce. anyways, they’ll be fun to play with…

  47. ... With my normal playing pards I have occasionally used comments like "next time I would try a 3 wood instead of driver" when they roll a putt 10 feet or more past the hole. I like coming up with new never used comments. But my favorite is with my best friend living in Tampa now but visits Phoenix often. He is 50 but a big hitter and usually has plenty of birdie opportunities. When he misses a makable birdie putt and taps in for par I always say with exaggerated enthusiasm "GREAT Par CJ!" He wanted an autographed 8x10 head shot for his office and requested I sign it "GREAT Par CJ!"

  48. I waited to listen until after I watched all 8 episodes. Didn't want spoilers and wanted to form my own opinion before listening to their takes. Overall, I thought it was okay but certainly not great. I watched it with my wife who hesitantly tolerates golf and I'd definitely agree with the idea the series was made for people like her (though perhaps with a little more acceptance of golf lol). The Joel Dahmen episode is definitely the best and was our favorite. The Finau episode was probably a close second for us because of Tony and his family. Both episodes were mildly difficult to watch however because of the fact my mom also passed too soon (I was 28, she was 52?). Naturally, that is one part of why we connected with those episodes, but also, we just connected with Joel's humility (read imposter syndrome) and humor and Finau's down-to-earth, family-man appeal. As a result, my wife started following the Finau's joint Instagram account. The episodes featuring Brooks, DJ, and Poults were good from the stance that you could maybe start to understand why they went to LIV (agree or not). However, Poults was the only one that made sense - a guy at the tail end of his career struggling to compete against younger more powerful players. The argument against him of course is that he really doesn't need the money regardless of what he says. I can only assume Netflix didn't touch on his Ferrari collection in an attempt to make him more appealing somehow. I'll probably give a couple of the episodes a re-watch and look forward to season two. Hopefully, they won't spend as much time on meaningless details and provide a better picture of what professional golf looks like: feeder tours, Monday Q's, designated events, the majors, and perhaps a brief synopsis of what makes golf relevant in the 21st century (i.e. Tiger and the proliferation of young athletes who decided to pursue golf instead of other sports).
