  2. Good morning everyone! Happy Saturday and I hope y'all have an enjoyable weekend. I'm just taking it easy right now drinking my coffee before making some breakfast later. It's going to be a taking care of the wife weekend, she's a bit under the weather and I'm going to do what I can to bring some sunshine into her life. We're going to make waffles later on today, I got a craving for them after seeing @GolfSpy_BOS post about them the other day.

  4. morning everyone To follow up on yesterday's gm my daughter did very well at the heptathlon. She broke her college schools record for the most points earned at a meet by 138 points which is a good amount. She is a sophomore, so she has another two years to go. I think she will only get better. There were a ton of colleges there and she was coming in 4th place in a lot of events. I'm so impressed with her abilities and holding a straight A average. I submitted my Cobalt Q6 review this morning. So, I'm in golf mode again. My course is closed for open play today due to some qualifying rounds for a college event. But the weather is kind of crappy anyway. Tomorrow bright sunshine and in the 50's.

  10. After a Paradym fitting that didn't go well at all, I had a very successful fitting last week for the Stealth 2. Recap: Averaging 225 carry, 2500 spin, 13* launch and best fit was a Speeder NX in A-Flex. ... Started off todays fitting with a TSR2 and hit it OK. I hit more of my typical miss than when I was fit for the Stealth 2 so more draws hit on the toe. I wasn't swinging as well as I did with the Stealth so today was a better representation of being a little off on the course. Tried quite a few shafts and didn't love any of them so my fitter was ready to move on to the TSR3. Right away he moved the weight to the max toe position to combat my mid to low draw. Instantly felt better and I was able to dial in some really good swings, but still an occasional big draw. AD-UB was working well and then we tried the Tensei Blue AV Xlink and that was the best combo for both feel and performance. Interestingly telling my Titleist rep the A-Flex worked best in the Stealth 2 he was shocked. ... My swing speed was a maddeningly consistent 93-94mph and when he asked me to try and swing faster, trying twice it dropped to 91 mph . He saids with such a smooth swing I probably adjusted to the A-Flex on the range but he felt confident it would be a bad fit on the course. He rarely fits anyone into an a-flex over 85mph and of course I was well above that. In the end I carried several drives 232-234 and had a ball speed over 140 compared to the Stealth that my best was carry 228 and 138 ball speed. I have a positive AOA around 6* so lower spin worked OK around 2000-2200 but when I hit the center and got it up to 2400-2500 I hit my longest drives. Of course the TSR3 looks awesome at address and the sound/ feel is excellent and that always helps. ... All the grips were a little thin compared to my Lamkin ST +2 Hybrid grip that has a large diameter under the bottom hand and I think that contributed to my toe hits and low draws but some of those swings were familiar like my bad swings on the course. Mostly a side effect of two back surgeries and I tend to turn my shoulders with my hips moving forward to lessen any torque when my hips are opening and my shoulders holding back. Some days are better than others so knowing my miss and having a club that lessens the ill effect is a nice option. On paper the TSR2 is the more forgiving driver of the two but since my miss is on the toe and having the ability to move the weight out to the toe side, the TSR3 was more forgiving than the TSR2 for my swing. I really enjoyed this 45 driver minute fitting and I will probably end up just ordering one. A slightly heavier weight (2gms) and 1/4" shorter shaft along with the rest of the fitting recommendations: Dexterity: RH SureFit Hosel Setting: C-4 SureFit CG Setting: Toe 2 SureFit Weight: +2 g Length: -0.25" Shaft: Mitsubishi Tensei AV Xlink Blue 55 TSR Shaft Flex: Regular Tip Trim: Standard Grip: Standard Grip Size: Standard Size Grip Assembly: Grip In Box

  11. for some reason I didnt get any posts on my email for a few days, anyway... What a week it has been, I played 5 days, pushed my physical and mental capabilities. I have been off golf for basically 5 months due to surgery and it is a new and may I say weird experience coming back. i developed a "scooping" fall on back foot action on some drives during the round which caused some weak left pulls, very disconcerting, my fix for that is to to make sure " I call it tap the player into the boards" with my hips, a reference to a hockey hip check. That worked really well. My putting was abysmal on my wednesday round, I figured out I was concentrating on the result instead of the process so thursday I rolled the ball much better and yesterday was "magic with the wand" So the process continues... my first tournament is April 22-23 so have some time to figure it out but I am very restless to get back to just using muscle memory and not having to take two steps forward and one step back.

  12. Good Saturday Morning Folks Double header baseball games today starting at noon. Weather looks like it's going to hold on and be a nice day with high temp in the mid 60's. I am really hoping the rain holds off tomorrow as I am supposed to play golf. Weather app says 80% chance which means it's going to rain we just don't know how much or how hard. Have a great day fellas. JP

  14. GM everyone! Sore left elbow today; I’ve had so many different aches and pains that I’m starting to repeat them!! Had this before, and it didn’t last very long so hoping for the same. It’s supposed to be sunny today and high around 64º, and we have a 10am tee time. Waiting for my second cup of coffee to be delivered to me in bed.

  16. Showing the green and being able to move the pin location is a nice feature, but will still not be as accurate as using a rangefinder for distance to the pin. Having it be a nice looking watch when not playing is nice, but I quit wearing every day watches years ago. Counting steps is nice for those who wear fitness trackers, but I don't. A more colorful watch face is nice, but doesn't change the data shown. The only feature that would get me interested is if they somehow substantially increased GPS accuracy. Don't get me wrong, I love my V3 and Shot Scope as a company, and my V3 isn't going anywhere. At this point, however, I'm not interested in this new watch at the price they will be offering it.

Done and done! In and out inside of an hour - currently at home, ice pack applied, and regaling my wife with tales of how HORRIBLE the procedure was (cough cough) and she's heating me up a slice of pizza right now. I'm not saying I'm milking it, but...I might be a little. Thanks for all the advice/words of wisdom - procedure was pretty easy, and I drove myself home, no problem. Hooray for relatively-painless science!

  18. Tom the Golf Nut here for another DIY adventure. I decided to document my attempt to put in a real grass golf green. I’m doing this as a challenge for myself. Can I really get a grass golf green to take and be able to chip and putt as close to real course conditions as possible. Part of the challenge is to do things as inexpensive as possible. Just because that was how I was brought up and it really gets me thinking on how I can accomplish something to show others that you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars to accomplish what you want with a little research and hard work. I hope you enjoy the journey. First was to scope out the different sides of the property to find just the right spot. Away from normal yard traffic and hopefully a place that the dog doesn’t get into and dig a hole. I also want to be hitting away from the house just in case a visitor gets a little carried away. By choosing this location I can chip to the green from three different angles. This will also let the yard heal some if I don’t use a mat. I tested the soil for drainage to see how much aeration I would need to do and to see if I had to add inches of sand. I had to move a fence post for an unrelated project and dig a new hole. So, the soil to sand content was fantastic. Luckily, I live in the sand belt of NC so drainage wasn’t a problem. I think this will be the spot. It has a decent amount of sunlight as well. I did a border using pinecones and kept on moving them around until I got the result I was looking for. The next thing I did was layout the shape and inspect from different angles in the yard to confirm my decision. You can see by the amount of 8’ fence sections that this is actually a decent size. Then I took out the zero turn mower and brought the existing grass area down to 1”. Now I can see the low spots. I also de-thatched the area raking it by hand in several directions. Next step was all research. 1) What type of fertilizer? 2) What manual reel mower to purchase? 3) What type of seed or turf? 4) Where to get top dressing sand and leveling sand. 5) Will the grass I use conflict with the rest of the property’s grass? I decided on a Bio Advanced 5 in1 fertilizer which kills existing weeds, prevents new weeds, kills crabgrass, and prevents new crabgrass and also greens up the grass. Normally $62.00 for 10,000 sq/ft on sale for $32.00. I want to fertilize other areas as well. The green will be 1000 sq feet. For the mower I decided on an FDW reel mower for several reasons. It was available shipped from Walmart. It had a full roller in the back. It had the lowest standard mowing height of everything I looked at. Its low setting is .48 inches where most others started at 1” to 1-1/2”. And finally, there is room to add extra holes to lower the cutting deck even further. It also had a grass catcher. $69.97 The harder part was the grass itself. After discussions with golf course superintendents, golf pros and hours of internet research I was steered away from Creeping Bent grass varieties. I’m going with Bermuda. Now it got worse. Most Bermuda strains for putting surfaces are sod only. At between 50 and 65 cents per square foot and adding in shipping I was getting upward of $750.00 plus laying all the sod. But I continued on in my search and came across a variety called Yukon Bermuda. This is intended for home putting greens and comes in seed form. It can be mowed down to 1/8-inch, traffic tolerant and had all the benefits of somewhat lower maintenance. Yukon Bermuda grass seed. 2 lbs for $39.99 will cover 1000 sq feet. This will also grow and choke out any other grasses. I didn't have to get down to dirt this way. I also found out that the rest of the property has centipede grass which does not like a lot of nitrogen. But Bermuda does. So, I have to be careful and only fertilize with the Bio Advanced on the green area. So much for wanting to fertilize other areas with this compound. But I’ll have plenty for the next few seasons. You only need 2 pounds per 1000 sq feet twice a year. The leveling sand and top-dressing material were becoming an issue as well. No local deliveries and buying sandbags at over $5.68 per 50 lb bag was not going to cut it. For 1000 square feet I was looking at around 40 bags give or take. Plus, I want to fix other areas in the yard as well. I decided to ask my Country Club where they get theirs and the said they brought it up from South Carolina. Then he asked why and I told him about my project. He said they had three dump truck deliveries of sand and leveling fill that they never used and has been sitting there for two years. Someone donated it. It wasn’t what they normally use so it was just sitting there. Chip (great name for a golf pro by the way.) told me to help yourself to all you want. Thank you, Scotch Meadows Country Club. Sand, Free. Now off to Lowes to pick up empty sand bags. $17.00 for 25 bags. I took the reel mower and brought the green area down to ½” and I’m ready to fertilize and then add leveling sand. Filling up the sand bags and getting them home was not much fun but I had some help. I got about 14 bags in the trunk before the tire started disappearing in the wheel well of the car. We will see how far 14 bags gets me. I can always get more. Since it is really not that uneven, I might be able to get away with it. Spreading the sand and leveling was a chore as well, but I devised a DIY leveling rake out of a length of wire closet shelf and an old pole sander I had in the garage. This plus some large push brooms and a 6 foot level got the job done. Tools existing or built from stuff in the shed. $ 0 14 bags didn’t cut it. Back out to get more. I’ll probably do another 14 but looks like I will only need 5 or 6. Better safe than sorry. I added in the fertilizer after the first load of leveling sand. That should help it get down into the soil. Then the next load of sand was spread on top. I left some undulations because my last two synthetic greens at previous houses were mostly flat. Frankly it got boring. This will add more challenge. Well I was wrong again I actually used 13 of the 14 sand bags. Amazing, I picked an area that was pretty flat, decent sun and I still put down 1,400 pounds of sand. I used the home-made leveling tool for most of it then used a stiff broom to work it in and brush off any pebbles. Then a little water to get things down into the area well. Everything I’m reading said I need to wait until the soil temperature is around 65 degrees before seeding. The green is ready for seed. Now it’s just a matter of time before I can seed. Once seeded I will lightly rake it in. For me this is the worst part of the project. I am impatient I want to get it done now. Heck I’m expecting the grass to grow, and the seed wasn’t delivered yet. LOL. So, while we are waiting let's add up the expenses so far. Fertilizer, $32.00 Sandbags, $17.00 Leveling sand, $0 Tools, existing or homemade, $0 Yukon Bermuda seed, $39.99 Manual reel mower $69.97 Labor $0 Total to date $158.96 Compared to the cost of the synthetic ones I installed myself at other houses I lived in which ran over $2,000 in material, this was a no brainer. I shouldn’t jump to conclusions because we don’t know how this will turn out. Other than this obviously costing less to try, I know that the green will not compact like sand filled synthetic did. They got so hard that a ball would bounce off it like a rubber ball on a pool table. What’s the worst thing that could happen? I just have a different color lawn in that section. But it will be pretty! While I’m waiting, I am now going to find a way to build my own hole cutting device. You have to change the hole locations right! That was another disadvantage of synthetic greens. Once the hole is in its done. I'll let you know what I come up with. I also will modify the reel mower to get it down to 1/4 inch and possibly 1/8". I will add in the seeding once the soil temperature reaches 65 degrees but then it's up to Mother Nature to get this green growing.

  19. ... Since it was on CW and I could watch on my TV I decided I should have at least an informed negative opinion. It was obnoxious but honestly not as bad as I envisioned. Graphics in bright green/fuchsia that were too big and on too often detracted from the golf. Announcers were quite obnoxious as were most topics. Music was muted and just became background so not as LOUD as I expected. ... The real negative for me at least (other than sports washing) is the team concept. There is no team concept. Just individual golfers adding their scores together. No strategy, no foursomes, four balls or alternate shot. Best I can tell it is just an additional gambling category. But boy do they push teams!!! At least now I know what I am not missing, although I will admit it was nice seeing Oosthuizens swing again.

  21. It was sunny, cool, and windy today so I decided it would be a good day to go to the range. Actually, my wife suggested it since she's not feeling good and is spending most of her time in the bedroom. I'm not going to say it was my best day, but it surely wasn't my worst. I'll just say it was fun getting out hitting some balls. My wedges were horrendous. Shank, shank, shank, shank, top. That last one was setting me up for the theme of the day which was thin. It seemed like most of my shots were coming low off the face. I only hit a small bucket, so I was limited to the number of shots I hit per club. My set GW was probably one of my better clubs today, I was slightly off the heel but hitting nice shots near my target. I love this club. The 8 iron was a little inconsistent, but I was still hitting it decent. The 6 iron was trying to cut the ball in half. I hit some low screamers with it, but the contact was pretty consistent. I hit a couple of good shots with my 5 wood, but topped one so bad it wasn't funny. I think I should start spraying the bottom of the club to check contact there. Driver was pretty good. I hit one high toe and you can barely see the impression next to the "Flash Face" writing and the others were a little more near the heel. I was happy with the consistency. I need to continue to work on a pre shot routine and not freeze so much over the ball. I've gotten better than I was where I was locked in terrible thoughts for way too long standing over the ball. After I left the putting green I found a couple of balls sitting close to the mat in a puddle of water and hit some chips with them just sitting the club down and going. Those were the most pure wedges I hit all day and a proof statement not to be a basket case over the ball. I did roll some putts, where I started out pulling everything. I made a slight adjustment in set up and focused on rolling the ball over an intermediate target and got that straightened out.

  23. Yes, you have said that about 1000+ times in this thread. I didn't say there haven't been advances but there have been limitations imposed and it has stayed roughly the same. I don't believe more forgiving heads have had much influence in pro distance since they mostly hit the center of the face and there are limitations on trampoline effect so that doesn't show ball speed increases with same driver speed. Shaft have changed to help pros optimize launch and spins conditions to maximize distance; this will continue even with the new balls. With these new shafts driver speed remained the same. So yes, I supported your position that it isn't player fitness but equipment as well as better understanding of desired launch characteristics, player strategy, and more data capture by the tours that has lead to the faster uptick since 2015. You even acknowledged that the advances have slowed but the distance numbers have increased as a faster rate so it can't just be equipment. It is tied to the daily emails that highlight threads and this one was highlighted a few days ago.

  24. Good morning on a late winter looking WNY Saturday that started with that bally grapple snow that really fits the term snow shower, that became lazy clumpy flakes that have gotten smaller and starting to move across as they descend with wind picking up and sunshine working its way between broken clouds. Snow clouds are lower elevation things so when they get smaller they get brighter until the sun streams through the breaks. Should move on past us later this morning. Breaks are gone, steady snowfall perfect for Christmastime. Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend Okay that was maybe way too much but from the calendar it is going to become a rare event soon (You hear me Mother Nature?!!! Sorry just kidding! hehe Some golf weather please??) Forecast holds 20-30mph wind, gusting Force 8 on the Beaufort Scale. Hot orange pekoe in the mug. Looking forward to PGA HOPE session 6 of 6 at WildWood CC in Rush NY indoors this afternoon.

Weirdest part was the "normalcy" of the procedure for everyone who wasn't me: the nurse, iodine-ing everything, the doctor cracking jokes the whole time while listening to 80s rock, the random guy popping his head into the room to say "have a good weekend" with my junk on full display (I made sure to say "Thanks! If you can do it later on a Friday of a basketball-filled weekend, you may get to spend all of Saturday watching some good games (Maybe Masters weekend?)

    How'd you play?

Played ok today at Cream Ridge GC. Very inconsistent. 43 on the front was not legit. I gave myself the 3rd putt on #8 after my 2nd rolled 4 ft past. Also, Birdie on par 5 #9 I cheated, flubbed a 4w from a bad lie and decided I was going to give myself a mulligan and sit it up on a tuft for some winter rules action. 215yd to within 15ft on the 2nd try. 2 putted and put a birdie on the card, but we know the truth. The back 9 I fell apart. 3 balls OB from the tee, 2 others behind trees. The 48 I carded on the back was legitimate. I tried to cheat on 1 hole, but hit a 2nd drive OB and just played my first from behind trees. Update: on further inspection, I'm suffering from high expectations. I rarely put a clean 9 holes together at the courses I play often, so I shouldn't expect to go out on this course for the first time in 6 months and be aces. I was playing with 3 guys who were all members and play there often, silly to compare myself to them but I did it the whole round. The 1st hole I drove into trees, lay up with a 4w but went across the fairway behind another tree. Had to lay up again. Short with an AW, on in 5 2 putted for double bogey. Right from the start, bad targeting had me out of my game. I settled in and played #4-11 at +2 (-5 net) although as stated above I cheated to birdie #9. That's what I should take away as a positive. I did play well for that 8 hole stretch. +17 on the other 10 holes we'll pretend someone else played.

Exec 9 wit the Boyz, a blast as usual. Focus mostly was PXG 0311XF driver and a new Tour Edge 5 hybrid. I only had 2 par 4’s to try the PXG driver and it was all good, about same distance as old driver but had a nice feel and baby fade. The Tour Edge 5h was a surprise, felt really nice, straight and a bit more height than the Cally Steelhead 5h. The Cally has been a great hybrid but it’s starting to look a bit ragged. Not playing until Monday and limited with some Doc appointments next week.

  35. I agree to a point. The problem is that 'running QB's' are short lived in the NFL. Look at RG3. Lamar Jackson is often injured. The NFL is a different animal than college.......... all of the defensive players are large, fast and athletic. Not a good thing for a QB that makes a living with his legs.

  41. As I recall you weren't sold that they were the better option for you anyway. I think you're a younger, stronger player than their target group would be. What are you gaming currently? Wasn't it the I210's at the time of the test? I know that I'm unique when it comes to irons. When I analyze my game they are low men on the totem pole behind driver, putter (in some order), wedges and fairway woods/hybrid - I use them the least on the course that I play on and then when your drill down further and go individual iron they become almost irrelevant. Gap wedge is probably the most important one because I use it for bump and runs frequently. Last time I played I only hit 9 full iron shots in 18 holes, 3 full wedges, lots of short game wedge shots though of course, 12 drivers, 10 fairway wood/hybrid shots - you see the pattern for me. I can't see investing $1,200 in a set of irons when these work just fine for me. I'd rather spend half that on driver to be sure it's the most forgiving/longest club that I can find for my game. Do that and I may even hit a few more iron shots.
    3 points
  42. Sadly, mine have been relegated to 'guest' irons. My neighbor's father-in-law used them when he was in town visiting and we all went out to play and he really liked them. I put them in the bag for a week when it was cold and wet, thinking the wider sole and cavity would help me out. I promptly posted a pair of 86's and that was the end of that experiment...

  44. "Strength training does little to increase distance on any given swing." Are you FLIPPIN kidding me?!?!?! Please provide your background in personal training and sports physiology including all of the studies and tests you have coordinated, designed, observed or read. Let me help you: "The results of this study demonstrate that power is significantly correlated with CHS in PGA professional golfers, confirming previously established relationships observed in amateur golfers (Lewis, Adam L.1; Ward, Nick2; Bishop, Chris3; Maloney, Sean4; Turner, Anthony N.3. Determinants of Club Head Speed in PGA Professional Golfers. Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research 30(8):p 2266-2270, August 2016. | DOI: 10.1519/JSC.0000000000001362). Oh here is one from 2020, "Eight Weeks of Strength and Power Training Improves Club Head Speed in Collegiate Golfers," (Oranchuk DJ, Mannerberg JM, Robinson TL, Nelson MC. Eight Weeks of Strength and Power Training Improves Club Head Speed in Collegiate Golfers. J Strength Cond Res. 2020 Aug;34(8):2205-2213. doi: 10.1519/JSC.0000000000002505. PMID: 29461422). But it isn't just brute strength that results in distance, flexibility and the ability to create tempo is HUGE. The ability to FEEL the swing apex and TRANSITION fluidly will generate more speed than some muscle head who can bench 650 trying to muscle a driver on the range. It is the same reason why a 4'2" 92lb woman can toss a 360lb man across the mats like a rag doll. But I digress. Equipment has ABSOLUTELY improved. Ball speed off a metal head (or carbon fiber) driver is definitely hotter than off a persimmon wood head. Lighter materials and shafts lead to increased club head speed. But all of that aside I can still outdrive a couch potato with a Stealth 2, G425 or a Ti4 using my 1980s Wilson 1200GE woods or out distance comparative iron shots using my 1980s Titleist blades because of my level of fitness, which contributes to club head speed AND the ability to consistently generate that speed comfortably for a full round. Kind of like an unfit guy still being able to run 4 second 40, but not being able to hold under 15 minutes for a full mile and a fit guy only being able to run a 6 second 40, but maintain under 6 minutes for the full mile or more. Fitness = Performance. Equipment only enhances fitness. And if I had the flexibility I had before back surgery I'd blow it by you with a 4-year old's plastic kiddie club. Need more examples of fitness over equipment? From 1979 - 1985 Jack Nicklaus averaged from 264 to 269 yards off the tee. What equipment advantage did he have over the other players??? NONE! He played basketball, baseball and tennis in high school throughout his childhood and school years. He had strength and athleticism that other players didn't at the time. According to IBM recorded driving distance data at 11 PGA Tour events in 1968 the top 10 players averaged 270.2 yards, the average was 264.0 yards and Nicklaus led the Tour at 276.0 yards. Fred Couples was a linebacker, he averaged 268 yards in 1982. Davis Love III holds the second longest officially recorded drive in competitive play history, 476 yards at the 2004 Mercedes Championships (now the Hyundai ToC) at Kapalua. He drive was 39 yards short of the 515 yard record set by Mike Austin's in 1974. 1974!!!!! NOT 2014, NOT 2024, 1974! So, if the equipment is the problem why hasn't somebody beaten a record from 1974??? Sure, those guys would most likely be hitting the ball longer with today's equipment than they were then. BUT, they were longer than the other guys and would STILL BE longer than the other guys. So changing the equipment for everyone does NOTHING to bring the big guys down to our level. If anything it handicaps the recreational player ever further because the advancements in technology that have led to improved clubbed speed, consistency of shaft flex and performance, improved ball speed and quality control benefit them; it doesn't penalize them. And giving a beat up old Salt a bit of equipment to help him/her off-set all the wear and tear sure helps across the board, taking it away only penalizes all of us. If they want to halt potential progress in distance to where it is, then do the testing using current balls and the new swing speed criteria and set the requirements right where the X-Y axes cross today. That saves all of us recreational golfers from having to pay for manufacturers trying to figure out regression. It saves all of us from having to return to the drawing board to figure out how far X, Y, and Z clubs are carrying and trying to figure out how to carry the pond on a 185 yard par 3. It saves the problem of competitive amateurs having to figure out what ball they will be allowed to play at what tournaments and what the resultant club choices will have to, maybe, be. I am going to try to put the ball factor to some level of rest by doing a "field test" tomorrow comparing my OLD 1980 model Titlest blades to my current P790 irons, 3 thru PW. I'll post the comparative iron specs and results using current model range balls and a Swing Caddie SC300. "Strength training does little to increase distance on any given swing." You kill me dude.

  45. Practicing with my cobra speedback gap wedge, had it 6ish months and decided it’s time to give a run. Hitting about 60 metres high shots and good results when keeping my eyes on the ball till after contact, did about an hour and half of the shots were good . Now back to the garden after golf ️ lol

  46. Ace enjoys destroying pine cones. He came in to sneak off with one. I can’t wait for the soil temperature to get where it needs to be. I have to work on my patience.

  47. Recreational golfers: read that.... 99% of ALL golfers in the world. Without all of us recreational golfers, the sport/game would not exist. All of this nonsense over rolling back the ball and whatever else nonsense the "powers that be" come up with for 1% of golfers in the world is just complete nonsense.
