  1. As a 42 (43 next week) year old who has never been blessed with flexibility, I need to get involved with this in a BIG way.

I am currently playing off an 8.2 handicap but average less than 200 yards off the tee (90 mph CHS), which regularly loses me 3 SG OTT vs my 6 hcap goal (Arccos). An extra 15/20 yards OTT could get me to that goal...probably.

But...I think I need to put in some serious work before even touching The Stack, make sure my body is prepared for speed-training; I have a VERY short backswing (think hip-height with driver!).

Does anyone have experience of Yoga, Pilates or golf-specific exercises? Or did you all just order The Stack system and get on with it?

I'm sure there are gains to be had but I am worried about starting with a body that is not ready for this!

  2. I've seen many a post on here saying that 14 ways bags 'stop bag clatter' and make it easy to access clubs, etc.

I have the Ping Hoofer 14 and carry the majority of the time, primarily for convenience, but also because my course in the UK hasn't been fit for push/electric trolleys since October!

I ALWAYS get bag clatter with my bag, which I didn't mind when I had my old Ping G410 irons; those things would survive a nuclear blast. But now I have forged faced irons, I shudder at each clatter!

Also...when I have 13 x Midsize grips in there AND my putter, I struggle to get clubs in or out easily, especially the middle of the bag (mid-irons). I've even started leaving 3 wood at home just to save space at the bottom of the bag as it is driving me mad on the course!

The Ping Hoofer 14 regularly tops the MGS standings, and, for pockets etc. I cannot fault it. But what the hell am I doing wrong? Are there bigger bags out there, more suited to midsize grips?

He played with me and as expected, he was keeping pace with me until about the 5th hole and then his mental game imploded because of one bad shot. It was all over after that, 😂

They do that don't they 🤣 I keep telling mine that he's really not good enough at Golf to get angry when he hits a bad shot, but weirdly, this seems to make the situation worse 😉

  4. I've used Arccos for approximately 9 months with my iPhone and Apple Watch. I set the phone for detection as I have no issues having a phone in my pocket whilst playing (I already did before Arccos came along).

I only glance at the watch for yardages and mark the pin location.

If had to list 3 'things' which have helped keep me at a single figure handicap for the past year, they'd be:

    1. lessons
    2. replacing long/mid irons with 7 wood and hybrids
    3. the info/data that Arccos produces

Yes, there is the odd missed shot, the odd weird shot that you didn't take that needs deleting. BUT...the data and feedback you get FAR outweighs these niggles in my opinion. Being able to plot your SG progress vs a target handicap (6.0 in my case) is absolute gold, though repeatedly getting kicked in the nuts re: being 40 yards shorter off the tee than a 6.0 hcap ain't fun (DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT THEN! I know...I know). Yeah, the yardages don't lie, they're brutal, but it's better to know how far you hit it regularly and go off that than use that one you hit downwind in the height of summer a few seasons back!

It also stops you assuming/guessing what you are good/bad at. For example (and like someone else earlier in the thread) pre-Arccos I was constantly labelling myself as a terrible putter. Arccos has shown me that is simply not the case; in fact I am regularly gaining 2.0 strokes on a 6.0 hcap (which I will hand back off the tee...).

I'm up for renewal in the summer and I won't hesitate to stump up for another year.

  5. Enjoy! I got fitted mid-February (also for Gen6 P's) and have used mine for 4/5 rounds now, all of which have been in the 70's, with SG approach gaining massively versus my old, non-fitted set (Ping G410's).

The fitting experience was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble and no question no matter how inane/trivial was deemed stupid.

  6. Odyssey Stroke Lab 2-ball Fang, 33 inch.

Are there MUCH prettier putters out there? YES (PXG Blackjack and Toulon Atlanta; I'm looking at you!) but I cannot move away from having those 3 balls lined up at address, just sits so well and makes so much sense in my head.

Might...MIGHT look at the the AI One 2-ball if it didn't have the lines in the middle of the alignment balls. I cannot imagine ever using a blade putter.

Really appreciate getting some input from this group.  My current gamer is a TaylorMade Stealth 1 - bought in 2019 after getting fit at Club Champion.  Very pricey Oban shaft in it - 55 grams.  Was talking with my golf instructor and we agreed it was time to start looking at a new one.  My swing speed is down from 98-100MPH when I was 58 to to 90'ishMPH now that I'm sneaking up on 63.

Narrowing down options to Ping, TaylorMade, Callaway and maybe PXG.

Any recommendations from anyone who has made the switch this year - particularly with similar swing speed?

Anyone been fit lately for one of the this year's drivers w/ similar swing speed?

Planning a trip to Ireland next summer, so want a year or so to fine tune the driver and work on my game, so figured start with driver and potentially look at new irons as well.

    Appreciate any thoughts of feedback.

    Thanks Forum Folks

    Bill

The only one I can speak of trying is the PXG Black Ops. I have exactly the same swing speed with driver as you (c. 90mph) and struggled to get the thing airborne and when I did it practically fell out of the sky. I generate low spin with driver, but definitely got the impression that PXG's latest offering is not for our swing speed demographic. Golf.com's Fully Equipped podcast confirmed that you ideally need 100mph swing speed to get the most out of that head (but those who do will love it!).
Be sure to post what you've ended up getting 👌

  8. First round for a few weeks due to wife's hip operation (she's doing fine) and also first round with new irons/hybrids.

Fairly typically, strokes gained due to short game and putting saved my ass. SG approach should improve once I've gotten used to the irons/hybrids.

The SG lost to driving...yeah that's fairly common too. I didn't lose a ball (rarely do!), but the SG value is purely due to a lack of distance off the tee (averaged 190 yards yesterday), which is exacerbated in winter due to a lack of roll out after landing (the UK is basically a mud-puddle right now).

I know I need to address this, especially if I'm to get to my hcap goal of 6 (avg 6 hcap drives it 242 yards according to Arccos), either via Yoga/Pilates or speed training...or both, but always find reasons to not do it.

  9. I'm always spiked (softspikes). I had back issues during Covid, and find that there is zero chance of slipping when wearing spiked (Adidas Tour360's; the old ones from before some genius decided you couldn't change the spikes!).

I did try spikeless last summer, primarily for convenience, but had a few occurrences where my back foot slipped heavily on the downswing. Slipping = jolting = pain = round over.

The spikeless shoes are now used only for the driving range.

  10. For the past couple of years, I've been in the Pro V1 during Summer and the Chromesoft Truvis Yellow/black during Winter, mainly as it's easier to find/see and I don't get so emotional if/when I 'mis-place' one.

At a recent iron fitting, we also played around with driver on Trackman. Feedback was that I am VERY low spin with driver (never knew that!), sub-1800rpm, which, when coupled with my low ball speed (130 mph ish) resulted in the ball setting off on a piercing flight and just falling out of the air.
The fitter recommended I try a higher spinning ball so I've moved into Pro V1x and the difference is significant through the bag, both in terms of peak height and carry, and wow do they feel great around the greens! I'll be sticking with Pro V1x for the rest of the year for sure.

  11. Going into pretty much every golf store in a 50 mile radius and finding no left handed clubs has led to a LOT of eBay guesses...and misses! None of these are bad clubs; they were just bad for me.

SLDR driver - rocketship out of the center; not so much anywhere else...FORE LEFT!
Srixon ZX5 3H with a Hazrdus Black shaft - good club but shaft felt like a scaffold pole; what was I thinking?
TM SIM DHY - Couldn't even hit my 5 iron, but thought a 3 iron DHY would be peachy for me. No. Just...NO.
Cobra RadSpeed OneLength hybrid - so bad for me that I bought it TWICE. Couldn't get the thing more than 10 feet off the ground.

Basically, a lot of clubs in the space that is now filled quite happily by my 5 & 7 wood, who are both wondering what all the fuss was about 🤣

    • Person riding with you escapes at the end of the round leaving you to return the cart so that he does not tip the cart boys.
    • Folks I have never met before who think I care about how good they usually play but today is an exceptionally bad day.
    • Negative vibes on the course. C’mon dude, you’re outside and away from the everyday grind, relax!
    • people not picking up food wrappers, empty bottles, etc.
    • when sharing a cart, the other person is messy and/or taking the whole storage in the back

    Absolutely 👌

I've got my 50th coming up this year and I'll be treating myself to a new set of fitted irons.

Only ever played 2nd hand off eBay and not had a fitting before and want to go into it with no preconceptions of what is best for me.

With that in mind, what would you recommend I put on the list to try? Not fussed about massive distance gains as I prefer feel and can gap accordingly if I need to. Open to combo sets, whatever will work best really.

I'm in the higher swing speed category (playing Mizuno MP54 4-PW Nippon Modus 115 X stiff), 7i typically carry around 170y.

Current index 11.6 but this is only my 3rd year playing again after a long break so I'm hoping that will come down - aim is to get to about 8 by the end of the season.

The only criteria is that I'm left handed so that rules out quite a few options.

Hit me with your best recommendations 👍

I had my 1st iron fitting a few weeks back (also a lefty, albeit with a MUCH lower carry number than yourself; 7i = 145 yards).
I travelled up from Plymouth to the Bristol/Chippenham area to try to get a good batch of brands in one area/day. At American Golf Bristol I hit P790, Cobra Forged Tec, Ping i525, T200 & Apex Pro, then moved onto Chippenham Golf Centre hitting the i525 again, Srixon ZX5mkii and finally seeing a PXG fitter at the same location.
Was a close thing for me between ZX5mkii, PXG 0317T and PXG 0311 Gen6P's; I opted for the forgiving cuddle from the 0311P's (moving from G410's).

The 0317T's are some of the most beautiful heads I've ever seen; seems a shame to get them muddy.
The difference in fitting experience between American Golf and PXG was SO stark; AG is lightyears behind, both in terms of tech and detailed explanations...still using loft and lie boards! PXG was detailed and honest, couldn't do enough for me, even when I'd clearly run over my allotted time!

All the best with your fittings; let us know what you go for.

I'm a high handicap player (not been playing long). Recently did a society event day at the St Pierre golf course in Chepstow (first time playing there).

12th hole is my best of the day (530 yards dog leg left, stroke index 4). Hit it left of the tee with the driver and it went straight through a tree and landed in the rough.  Took the 3 wood out of the rough and landed next to the 150 yard marker. Third shot with the 7 iron and landed on the green, two taps on the green for a par score.  With my handicap taken in gave me the best point score of my day.

I was so damn happy to get a level par on a 5 par hole.

I'm due to play there in May (I'm based in Plymouth). I've heard it's tight and has hosted a Solheim Cup/numerous European Tour events, but surprisingly there is very little written about the course online and even fewer Vlogs showcasing the course.

So...what's the place like? What was your experience? Any advice is very welcome. Thanks

After doing some research on balls for the first time in my life, I actually switched over to the q star tours. They have been hanging on a string off the tee and I can finally hold greens with my iron shots!

This is exactly what I've found. I moved from a decent 2 piece (Titleist tour soft) to the Q Star Tour, and the difference is amazing. I'll never go back to 2 piece.

  16. It kinda depends what you class as budget, which I guess also depends on how many you lose.

I previously tended to lose maybe 2 balls a round, and floated between the Titleist Tour Soft as a gamer and the AD333 for days when I couldn't keep the thing on the planet.

2 weeks ago a friend gave me a sleeve of Q star tours to try. I'd never hit a 3 piece ball before, not once, so I gave them a whirl. Since then, I've shot 81, 77, 83 and 82 (I'm an 18 handicap, my home track is a par 69). They are flying straighter off the tee and stopping quicker on the green then anything I've ever played, and at £30 a dozen in the UK, I consider that to be a fantastic budget option for anyone looking to get into a 3 piece ball (as long as your swing speed isn't super-high, as they are soft). I shopped around and managed to get 2 dozen for £48, and I'm yet to lose one in 3 full rounds (I probably don't hit it far enough!). An excellent, confidence inspiring, affordable ball.
