There is no standard for how torque is measured and torque is about feel. The torsional stiffness of a shaft has very little influence. The longitudinal stiffness of a shaft has much more influence. When looking at shafts weight, length and longitudinal stiffness or the stiffness profile are the important measurable factors. The stamped flex not so much because like torque there’s no industry standard for how to determine what to label a shaft. Then there’s the feel factor which plays a role in how we swing. The feel can affect negatively or positively or in some case not at all how we swing a club. Shaft changes aren’t the way to go to change loft or spin.

The ops issue is swing related. Can a shaft help, sure, but it’s going to be head loft, cg location and the balance of the head and shaft.

Totally agree with you. I was originally fit into an atmos black shaft and a 10.5 head. The atmos has a 3.8 torque on it. With my Stealth 2 it has a 9 degree head and the Kai'li red shaft. That shaft has a stated 4.1 torque. Similar weight but different profiles. I'm hitting the Stealth higher and more consistently than the fitted Mizuno. I fitted myself using the knowledge I picked up from my Mizuno fitting. So far I'd say I did a great job but without question 1 company's numbers can be totally different than anothers.

As for the op I'm so happy for you. Just the experience itself for me it's worth it. In the long run it'll make you a better golfer. You can check different companies for similar shaft numbers but like Ricky Bobby said the numbers for 1 company aren't necessarily the same as others. You could ask the fitter what they recommend that are similar. Sometimes TXG/ Club Champion do ask anything on YouTube. A guy like Ian could probably give you examples

  2. To get ready for the upcoming season I tested 4 different golf balls:

    1 - Ol' faithful Titleist Pro V1

    2 - Wilson Triad

    3 - Callaway Chromesoft X LS

    4 - Vice Pro

After analyzing all the data I decided to go with the Vice Pro. I got a little more height out of it and got a little more spin off my driver. The Pro V1 was longer but can't justify the price for the little bump in performance.

Good to know! I am going in tomorrow to a local shop very excited to see the result.

Remember to ask questions. I walked in and they asked me if I had a preferred club brand. I said no because I was open to hit anything. I thought I was going to pair up well with a Callaway and ended up with a Mizuno ST 190 that I probably would have never considered lol. Pay attention to your numbers too. Those things are important. I took pics of mine as a guide point. Lastly, have fun!

Has anyone had a fitting that did not yield expected results?  I had my first fitting several years ago and ended up buying new (very expensive for me) irons.  My handicap went up since the fitting.  To be fair, the timing of this was also when I started playing a bit less as well but I guess I was expecting to see a bigger difference in my game after the fitting.  I was fit for a new driver a little over a year ago and I would say that part of my game has been better since.

For myself I got fitted for a driver about 4 years ago. I was driving it really well... until I wasn't. Was it the club? Yes and no. There might have been a physical issue with the driver after 4 years of using it but I can tell you my swing changed. I lost the swing I had when I got fitted and started struggling. After 4 years, and with the knowledge I picked up from that fitting, I was able to fit myself for a new driver and I am hitting the driver better than I ever have! So I definitely believe you can "out-fit" your fitted clubs with swing changes and other factors.

I’ve been getting lessons and my instructor is encouraging me to go get fit. I’m swinging it pretty well but still have a miss right. Looking at the videos the shaft is pretty flexed at impact leaving the face open even when my hands are in the right position to close it. I also hit the ball pretty high. That’s a known thing I struggled with before lessons and my swing isn’t dramatically up only 6 degrees or so. We use a trackman to practice with.

I play with a 10.5 lofted low spin Cobra head that I self fitted. The LS part is on the right track but it sounds like I need a different shaft and lower lofted head.

I’m not sure if I’ll suddenly hit more fairways and it was the wrong set up the whole time or if this is a swing issue my instructor is hoping a fitting will compensate for.

I'm not a fitter but from what you are saying it sounds like you might need a lower loft and a lower torque shaft. Again it depends on your numbers and what kind of flight you are looking for. I would definitely go for a fitting. You will learn so much about your swing and just the experience of it is well worth it, whether you buy the club or not.

  6. I'm 47 now but I've got to tell you: I desperately want to work in the golfing industry. I'd love to be a fitter. I'm obsessed with the process ever since I first got fitted for a driver a few years ago. I just feel like I might have missed the boat at my age. Also, there isn't any real opportunities where I live. My friend is selling his business with 3 HD golf simulators and my wife keeps swelling my head telling me if anyone could make money with that place it's me lol. But seriously, I would love it. Love everything about the fitting process and I love helping people

  7. I am really liking Trottiegolf. I'm obsessed with learning about club fittings and love his content. I also like James Robinson and Chris Dennis as James has a similar swing speed to mine and he and Chris are really funny. I don't care for when Chris has "mid-handicapper" Dave on the channel as I can't relate to him. I liked when he had Frankie on but he hasn't been on in a longtime.

Other than that I try to watch Rick Shiels, Mr Shortgame, Danny Maude and of course meandmygolf guys are great.

A good fitter is going to fit a club to what the golfer needs and wants.

A not so good fitter is going to either focus purely on distance because distance sells or focus on what the golfer tells him/her is the goal(ie distance, more consistency, etc) and usually at the expense of the other stuff.

So what did you tell the fitter you wanted out of the fitting?

As to not knowing anyone that has one, what others have or don’t have is irrelevant, because all that matter is whether the club does what you want it to do, if it doesn’t then it’s not a good choice and if it does then great you have a club that works or you.

There are peoples who swing doesn’t work with one brand but does another. That’s the nature of clubs and club designs. Find what works for you

This is very true. I just bought a Stealth 2 and I really wanted a Ping 430. I've never gotten along well with Ping but figured everyone and their mother was saying it is good so I tried it and for whatever reason I just can't hit it. My Mizuno ST 190 was going about 252. The stealth went 270 and 280. My friend also has 1 and swears by it.

I personally like the 3H better than the 5W.  For me the same distance but with the 3H I think it's easier to hit.  I also like the 3H out of the rough better as well.

Exact same reason for me. For whatever reason I can't hit my fairway Woods out of the rough. Switched the 5 for a 3 hybrid and much better. At 1 point I had a 2 hybrid instead of a 3 wood. That worked well too

  10. After a couple of more 81s I had decided that I must have "unfit myself" of my driver. I tried everything under the sun to try to get it going and NOTHING was working....until Saturday.

Saturday I went to play in a 3 person scramble in the Northern part of New Brunswick. I nice little place called St-Quentin. They have a 9 hole course so we had to play it twice. They are so small in fact that they don't even have a driving range so we we to a par 5 and each hit 1 drive. I of course hooked mine low. The grass on the tee box was a bit high so I figured I would switch to a longer tee next time.  I had warned my playing partners that I haven't been hitting my driver well over the last 6-7 weeks or so. They were fine with it. We started on a par 4 that goes 90 degrees about 260 out. I hit my drive and it went straight out of bounds. Next driving hole was the par 5 we had hit a driver from. I hit a great draw over some trees into the fairway! We had 160 in. Next driving hole was a short par 4. I hit another great little draw right down the middle only to head down there and we're 15 feet away for an eagle! When we made the turn back to this hole I drove it back on the green although further away we made the eagle. We were 3 under through 14 holes and went eagle, eagle, birdie, birdie to finish 9 under and win the second division! It felt like I couldn't miss with my driver. Every shot I wanted to hit I could. I don't think I've ever been so happy or proud on a golf course. At least with my swing I should say.

Needless to say playing with 2 people I barely knew and playing so well we decided that we would play this weekends 3 person scramble in Edmundston NB. Why not right? All 3 of us got along extremely well and our games seemed to match perfectly together.

So back home I was hoping that my new found fortune was going to stay. I went 9 for 14 on fairways, 11 for 18 on greens and finished with a 74 with 29 putts! I feel like I'm back. It feels like the swing is back. I'm praying that it is. Funny how just a change of scenery, playing a different course kind of cleared my mind. I just played without over-thinking anything and let my body do the rest. Sometimes you try to not overthink so much that you end up doing it to much so it definitely looks like I'm back on track. Playing again today...let's see how it goes.

I understand what you are going through.  I applaud you for seeing a therapist. I am not one, and can only share my experience with you.

Golf has NOTHING to do with it.  Your anxiety is not caused by golf, what you experience with golf is a result, not the problem.  The problem is the Anxiety and Depression itself.  It is an insidious disease that robs, you of the ability to see the good in yourself, and replaces it with just what you said, the feeling that you have let your family down, inadequacy, robs you of the enjoyment of activities,  and the feeling that you are weak, because you can't  just think your way out of it.  "Not letting any of this little stuff bother you", "it should be easy", "just tell yourself to stop letting it".

My personal experience with Anxiety and Depression, feelings like you expressed here and many more, has been this.  Talking yourself out of it is ALMOST impossible.  I suffered for years, all the while golfing, and getting angry, that I didn't play as well as I thought I should or could.  Continually telling myself afterward "I'm not going to let this game bother me anymore", like it was the problem, causing difficulty in other aspects of my life.  IT WASN'T.  I can only imagine, reading between the lines a little here, that your anxiety impacts many, many other aspects of your life.    I applaud you for making this post.

I have gotten my Anxiety/Depression under control with daily medication, and now less frequent counselling sessions.   I would encourage you that your difficulties with, golf & tournaments, and your feelings of letting yourself, and others down, about the   club championship, is a manifestation of the problem, it is not the problem.  Do whatever you have to!  Medication, psychologist, psychiatrist.  Keep trying all of them and different ones, if one doesn't seem to work.  Golf is not the problem!

I suffered with untreated Anxiety/Depression for years(and it almost cost me everything!).  I will live with anxiety & depression for the rest of my life, but the key is I am no longer at it's mercy, I am fighting back.  That is all that you can do.  Anxiety/Depression is very insidious, and most dangerous because of two things.  First it quickly causes feelings that you are to blame and there is something wrong with you, and how you are thinking.  Secondly it hides itself, by leading you to focus on the symptoms, and not the Anxiety/Depression itself.  Focus on difficulties in relationships(and not that these difficulties are being caused by Anxiety/Depression.  Focus on Golf, what can I change to enjoy golf more(when the lack of enjoyment of the game is being caused by Anxiety/Depression.  Self blame when little things are done, or don't go your way, that cause a hugely out of proportion response to what actually occurred.  It's you its not Anxiety/Depression, "you just need to be better"!

This is what makes it so dangerous.  If I can answer any questions, or offer encouragement, please message me.  You have taken the first step, because the worst thing you can do, is to do nothing!!

Thank you so much for replying. Yes it is a terrible disease. I am battling as much as I can. I've been better these days but it really has affected my golf game. So much so that I am losing all the ground I made up this summer. It's depressing and it's tough but I'm fighting my way through it. I am seeing a psychologist and I am working through my issues. Obviously I am trying to find help with my game as it's slipped so much. In my neck of the woods golfers can be very jealous and full of themselves. I've reached out to some people to see if they would be willing o play some 2 or 3 person scrambles but they either say no or yes and cancel last minute. I reached out to a pro for a driver lesson (I've never had one in my life) only to be told that he can't because of the time of year he's by himself and can't dedicate the time (Which is understandable).

So I'm going to do what I've always done - Work on it myself. I've never really been able to count on anyone to help me when I struggle so why bother starting now right? That's my mental state at the moment. Just trying to fix my driver swing while working through the usual small town bullsh*t

  12. We're in the same boat. I went from a 3.6 to a 5.3 because I suddenly can't hit my driver. This driver is also fitted. I know the old adage that it's the Indian and not the arrow but I wonder if sometimes we can make a swing change that "unfits" us from our fitted equipment? I want to hit push fades. My miss is both sides. I had a friend lend me an old TaylorMade Sim driver with a HZRDUS black shaft and although I still hit some bad shots the shots weren't as bad. Right now I can go ob left or right. Thinking of making a switch but I have more testing to do

  13. Been working hard to try to figure out my driver issues. Couple of 81s and today a 77. What did I do differently? I tried a Taylormade SIM that a friend of mine had. I had to adjust to the grip because he had a standard on his and I use a Midsize. It's not that I drove it any longer than my Mizuno but that the misses weren't nearly as bad. Progress is progress. He has lent me the driver for the week and I'm going to mess around with both and see if I should make a change or not

  14. Today's round sucked. 83. If you read my introduction, you'll know that I am struggling with a lot of things. Right now I have not driven the ball as bad as I am now in years. I am using a fitted driver and I know it's me. It is my worst club. If there's 1 thing I've never been able to consistently do is build a solid driver swing. How did I get down to a 3.6 then? My short game/ scrambling is strong as is my putting. They make up for the bad drives.

I played a 3 person scramble Saturday and 1 of the guys in the group I was in had a Taylormade Sim2 driver. I had bought a Sim Max 3 wood about a month ago and it flies almost as far as my driver which is not good for gapping.  I also can't adjust my 3 wood as it is not adjustable.

Anyways I asked my friend if I could try out his driver. He was using a HZRDUS Smoke x-stiff shaft which was most likely 2 stiff for me but I gave it a shot anyway and I smoked this driver! My driver went to about the 150 yard mark while the Taylormade went  past the 100 mark. I was stunned and am now considering making that change. I know changing my equipment is not going to fix a bad swing but I have more than 1 issue so I might as well try to fix both.

What else am I doing? Well with the season coming to an end here in Northern New Brunswick Canada I am going to work on a few things.

1 - I need to get my swing back. It has to be done. Not only get it back but build something that I can repeat consistently. Pressure or no pressure. If I can find more fairways it should help me right this ship. In my corner of the woods there really aren't any instructors or people who can give lessons. I have somebody in mind who I'd like to coach me if he can/ wants to. This guy's swing is a dream. Effortless and long. He's played with my Dad and I have the upmost respect for him. I hope he can help me. If not, I'll have to come up with a plan B. I have a friend who has golf simulators and intend on working on my swing there during the winter. It's not the same as being outdoors but it's definitely better than not doing anything all winter.

2 - I am going to develop my mental for competition. I naively never realized that this existed.  I am looking into getting mental golf type. I've been watching their videos on YouTube and did their online test to determine my profile and it fits like a glove. Everything it describes it's me to a T. I intend on doing this after Christmas.

3 - When the season starts I fully intend on playing more competitive tourneys. Up until now I would only play the club championship. People have told me that I don't play enough tourneys and the better players do. I used to have an official handicap but had stopped using an official one when they started charging us separately because my golf app holds a handicap for me and when I had an official one they were both the same number. I wasn't playing anywhere else competitively so why bother right? Not anymore.

I'm sure I will discover more things along the way but these 3 will be my main focus during the off season. To keep in shape I will be playing my electric drums. I can't stand gyms and I've always gotten my exercise by playing sports like ice hockey. I stopped playing ice hockey when I turned 38 so that I could keep my knees from breaking down (was a goalie).

  15. ***If you are reading/ Following this post, I sincerely thank you.

    Hello everyone!

My journey in golf is about 16 years old now. For those not familiar with my story. My father passed away 16 years ago. I inherited his golf clubs with little intention of playing them. 1 day were at a wedding that was being held at the local golf club and they had plaques on the wall of club champions from when the club was first opened in 1965 up until present time. Curiously I wondered if my father's name was on those plaques since he did have a couple of golf trophies at home. To my shock I was able to count 9 club championship wins!! After going through all the other names, the closest to him had won 7. My Dad was (and as of this posting still is) the all-time club champion! I couldn't believe it! He had not only done this incredible accomplishment but he was so modest that he never told us about all of these victories. As you can imagine, I figured I'd give golf a try. A REAL try, Obviously as time went on I fell in love with golf. When I say fell in love, I mean head over heels, to the point of almost complete obsession with golf! Which leads me to this post...

Not much is really known about how good my father really was. He has 2 older brothers (87 and 82 respectively) and they can't remember how low is handicap actually was. 1 of them said that they would play pretty close to par and even shoot under par fairly regularly and my mom remembers Dad mentioning a 3 handicap. So my goal is to get to a 3 handicap (or better) and win that club championship and put my name on the same trophy my Dad did.

For 16 years I have worked pretty hard at getting down to that elusive handicap. In 2019, I was able to control my demons (more on that in a bit) and finish in 2nd place. I took a few years off for financial reasons and have started back up last year. Last summer I shot my first round under par with a 70. This season I can honestly say I had the best start to any season I ever had. I literally broke 80 on May 19th and never hit over 80 until the week of the club championship (which this year was held August 19/20). So what happened? :et's discuss the "Demons"

In 2014 I was diagnosed as having chronic anxiety. It had crippled me socially. Some days I'm totally fine. Other days I don't go out, break down etc... I am getting professional help with this issue but I am going to need specific help if I'm going to get to the level I want to get to. Whatever progress I had made in 2019 is completely gone. This year it got so bad that August 1st hit and I immediately started to obsess about the tourney. So much so that I started to lose my game and the week of the club I completely lost my swing! As you can imagine having this level of anxiety I desperately tried to get it back but alas I failed and finished 2 spots before last place. Since this time, I had gotten my handicap to a 3.6 level and it has climbed to a 5. I have only broken 80 3 times in a month. The season here is coming to an end. Something needs to be done...

For 16 years I have blamed my equipment, my family, my swing, competitors....you name it. I blamed everyone but myself. I messed around so much with my swing that I have damaged it to a point where I can't break 80 anymore. All of this and 1 day I woke up and realized the true problem... it's between my ears!

Years and Years of trying different equipment, changing swings, do everything I could to put my name on that trophy and the issue all this time was me. I realize now that there is 2 forms of golf. 2 different minds. I had never trained my head for competitive golf. Never knew I really had to. So now my journey starts and I'm going to use this thread as a diary of my progression so that I can keep track/ look back at this and see the progress/ failures and everything in between.

So if you want to join me/ help me I ask that you follow this thread. Give me your thoughts. Your feedback. Anything. Pro golfers have teams of people helping them achieve their levels. I want you people to be my team. Why? Because a lot of you are just like me. You love the sport, You don't play against others. You play to beat the course. Let's do this!

My experience with the XLS is that it's not less spin than the ProV1. It's less spin than the Chrome Soft X, but other than that, it's a reasonably high-spin ball. Like you, I find myself gravitating away from the XLS at this point in the season because even though I tend to like working the ball, it is moving a lot even on shots that are really supposed to be fairly straight. It doesn't take much for a tight draw to turn into a sweeping hook!

If you like the performance of the ProV1 and just want to save some money, I'd look at the Maxfli Tour CG, Vice Pro, and OnCore Vero X1. There are plenty of DTC balls out there that are pretty similar to ol' reliable from a performance perspective, but yeah, the XLS is definitely not interchangeable with the ProV1.

I went by what the golf ball test gave us. It was about 200 rpms less spin. I found that for me at least it did spin less. I'm still going to test the ball against the Pro V1 as I want a cheaper alternative. I bought a dozen yellow Pro v1 and I love the color. Putting with the Pro V1 vs the triple track I loved the triple track more. I may go after the yellow X LS and just stick with it. We'll see...

  17. Well my ball experiment with the Chrome Soft X LS is officially over. Yesterday I decided to play the X LS vs the Pro V1 and see which one would be the better ball. It wasn't even close:

    Chrome Soft X LS - 4 fairways/ 9 GIRs - total 83

    Pro V1 - 6 fairways/ 11 GIRs - Total 74

I wanted to play a ball that was less expensive and had a little bit less spin but what I found was when I missed with my driver the X LS was...less forgiving? Basically if I missed with the X LS it would put me in a bad spot which ended up costing me strokes while the Pro V1 stayed in play more and was definitely more consistent. Only reason I want to switch is to save some money. The search continues...

  18. Personally I would go and get fit for them if you can. If you have the money to buy new getting fitted is logical. You'll get the right irons in your hands for your swing and often the fitting is free if you buy the irons after. That is what I'd do. Now, if you are like me and can't afford new irons, I'd still go get fitted and from there pay the fitter for his time. Get the specs and buy a second hand set. From there you can probably stop in and get them bent to your specs.

I was a big fan of this ball a few years back. It is long off the tee but like the pro v1 it spun 2 much for me off of wedges and mid irons. I'm the type of player who's usually short to the flag so spinning the ball back 10-15 feet hurts my chances of making more birds or saving pars. I need something that hops and stops and the Chrome Soft X LS is doing just that for me.

Especially since you can get 4 dozen on Amazon for 159.

I went 1 dozen right now because obviously I wanted to test the ball first. I went white ball with triple track as I wanted to see if the triple track would work for me. I'm not sold on it. If I decide to go with it (strongly leaning that way) I may go with yellow version without the triple track.

I use the Callaway Chrome Soft X LS as my everyday ball. I have been very impressed by this ball. I only use the Titleist Pro V1X Left Dash for special events or serious games. Mainly because of the price point I save the Left Dash.

That was the main reason for the switch. I don't "hate" the Pro V1 I just have a hard time justifying paying $75 bucks plus tax for a dozen balls! I'm saying a bit by going to the Chrome Soft X LS but so far I'm just about sold on it

  22. I'm 46 now and for me it's not been really the game per se. I find it's my eyesight that is crapping out on me. Used to have 20/20 vision or better and now I'm finding out that I'm having trouble tracking balls. Also seem to lose eye focus while looking down at my ball to putt. I switched irons and I've lost about a club length of distance but in doing so I've gained more control
