Check out Nancy Lopez Golf Adventures -- I've been to their clinics three times or more .. together with my wife .. and they happily cater to beginners and make them feel comfortable!

Nancy is not always present, depends on the event, but her two partners .. Sue and Teresa .. are awesome ladies, very friendly and very helpful.

    Thanks!

  2. My 60 YO wife wants to learn to play.  She is in great physical shape and very competitive.

Does anyone have any recommendations for Florida golf academies?  I'm thinking a 2-4 day school in Feb-April.  A lot of the golf schools I have researched target existing players. I have not anyone touting their expertise or experience with beginners.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Has anyone here played Pebble Beach in December?  Do I need to invest in a rain suit to jack up the price tag for this trip even more?  I don't have a dedicated top-of-the-line rain suit.

I have a feeling weather can be variable and volatile that time of year.

  4. I have used V3 for a year.  Over the winter I bought the enhanced Power Sense Strap, and the watch now captures 100% of my shots. I used to have to double check after each stroke to make sure the shot was recorded. If not, I would slam the club against the golf cart tire to make sure a shot was recorded. It's so reliable I never have to double check now.  Sometimes, if I think I mis-counted strokes, I know V3 will capture each shot and let me know at the end of the round

I add penalty strokes when comparing my card to Shot Scope on my computer after a round.   I haven't figured out where my round recap on the dashboard displays penalty strokes -  anyone have a clue?

  5. I used shotscope V3 for the first time last season. Like @Tlb34 mentioned, it did miss an occasional shot, but I bought the upgraded watch band (~$35.00) and now it captures nearly 100% of my shots.  I’m now learning how to mark “Positional” shots, so they do not count against the full-swing average.  For example punching out below some branches with a 7-iron is a a “positional shot.”  You were simply trying to punch out 30yards to the fairway. This way the 30-yard shot does not count in my stats

The V3 watch isn’t a pain to wear. You get used to it quickly. It’s nice that the watch, and not the phone or belt device captures each shot

I appreciate the compliments, but I'm still pretty early in my journey in the rules.  I've learned lots of stuff by simply looking up rules after playing, trying to understand how we SHOULD have handled a questionable situation earlier in the day.  I used to do this on the course if we had time, carried the little rulebook in my bag.  Now you can do it on your phone.  I've learned lots from various online forums, including some that are much less civil than MGS.  GolfWRX has a number of really knowledgeable rules experts.  At some point I spent a couple of bucks and purchased a little 80-page book called "The Principles Behind the Rules of Golf", (you can get it from the USGA) which really helped me to understand the rules as a whole, instead of a bunch of little "unrelated" things.  I've competed in in-house and interclub competitions, and learned how important knowledge of the rules can be at times, once overruling a club pro by simply looking up the rule.  In early 2019, I attended a half-day seminar to learn a little more about the then-new rule changes.  And now I'm signed up for the advanced USGA Rules Workshop.  Its a journey, its not something you can just read and understand.

So for someone new to the game, I suggest a couple of things.  First might be this from the USGA

    https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/a-short-course-on-the-rules.html

The "Principles..." is great, but is probably best read after a player gets some experience with the Rules.

Beyond that, look at the USGA Rules Education homepage, and at State Association pages, there are really lots of resources available.

Oh, and if I EVER tell anyone something about the rules, go look it up yourself,  don't trust me to get it right.  We all learn better when we spend some of our own effort.

Edit to add:  The reason you should look up rules for yourself, even if your question may have already been answered, is that you'll become familiar with the Rules.  You'll start to understand how they're organized, you'll learn where to look, you'll realize how to easily get from one place to another (Rule to specific definition to related rule to....).  That may be the single most important tool, the ability to effectively use the rules on your own.

Thanks DaveP, what a comprehensive set of ideas

  7. Other than reading the entire "The Official Guide..", does anyone know a good, interactive way to learn the rules in depth. I don't want become an Official, but would like to know more than my buddies. I'm willing to put the time into some study

  8. Does anyone know of an upscale golf belt manufacturer that's not too expensive?  i.e. under $100, but stylish?

I like these belts but they're a bit too much money:  https://druhbeltsusa.com/collections/mens-collections?gclid=CjwKCAiArbv_BRA8EiwAYGs23KmTIXeJm03b7BYHa3vv92uzcCYybwL0sUG-pH6HfQR2EHjTv3Vb2xoCTt8QAvD_BwE

Anyone have any good ideas.  I'm looking to upgrade my game from the usual $30 web belts, reversible belts, etc.  Belt buckle is key!

Great time of year to pick one of these up.  As our weather starts to have more and more cold days ahead, I'll be spending more time with mine.

You're going to like the Exputt.  I've learned that the lower stimps are harder for me than the faster speeds.  I think that's because on a 7 Stimp I have to hit it harder, which means a longer back/forward swing, which means more room for error.

Two nights ago I putted 10' fixed distance.  At 7 Stimp I hit 44%, and at 9 Stimp I hit 64%.

FYI, on 2019 PGA Tour, pros made 42.9% of 10-footers and 80.2% of 5-footers.  That's with weather and reading breaks.  We can't compare our indoor perfect condition make percentages to that, but it is somewhat of a benchmark.

  10. In a total rip off of @csamsh I built some alignment sticks out of 5/16" cherry dowel rods.  Colors are Syracuse U, Notre Dame and Washington Nationals. By coincidence, I just saw this website for Bubba Whips!  Are you kidding me?  $99-129 for alignment sticks just because they're made in the USA out of hickory?  Plus 3/8" diameter might seem bigger than normal, or maybe not.  I'll stick to make-my-own and give away as gifts.  FYI, for a great selection of color spray paint, I used Montana Gold.  100+ color shades

  11. Wow. Congratulations.  Those are awesome numbers.  19/20 is very hard!  My best (a couple of weeks using Exputt is 40% made puts at 10’ with 9 Stimp. I think PGA Tour average is 40%, but they are playing faster greens with break. We’re hitting dead flat puts.

I like your strategy of Random vs. increasing and varying the speeds. I don’t know if I can hit 160 putts every night, though.

LOL I'm from Tennessee I thought for sure it was the outhouse.  Funny though, when I lived in Connecticut I started with a similar set-up until a deer got into the net.

Deer would TOTALLY get in my net. I take my dog out for a walk before sunrise every day. We see deer, raccoons, foxes, skunks.

Fortunately, a dog having free-run on my 2 acres I think prevents deer from wandering on.  We've rarely had deer problems (eating shrubs) so long as we've had dogs
