  1. So for my first update, I'll start with one I really enjoy playing as a regular course.

Whirlpool Golf Course in Niagara Falls.  This is a Par 72, 18 hole course.  6701 yds from the Blue Tees.

Played this past weekend.  It is a beautiful course with lush green fairways (most of the season).  For the difficulty of the course, I think the fairways are quite forgiving and offer the ability to have slightly wayward shots be found quite easily even if in the trees.

I find the course to be a good mix of quiet holes surrounded by trees, to some that open up near the road.  As well there is a path near the outer edges that tourists walk quite often, so you can end up with a small gallery watching you tee off on the par 3 14th hole over a pond.

Not an overly hilly course, but some nice additions of a high tee box and a few high greens.

Usually this course is exceptionally maintained, but I did find this year that a few of the greens just weren't top level.  Although due to lockdown restrictions, they may not have been able to tend to them like normal.

I do think that this is one of the best value for the level of course in the area.  Although they have raised their prices since everyone is out playing golf this year and last year.

We typically play late afternoon on this course, so we often have to wait for deer to cross before hitting.  It adds nicely to the enjoyment of the outing.

Overall though I do recommend this course if you are coming to the area though.

The wildlife seems to pretty used to the golfers, so you can get pretty close.

This picture is from another day, but it is the view if you cross the road from hole 18.  Or if you have a really, really bad hook, it's where your ball ends up.

  2. Hi All,

For those looking to travel to Niagara region (I'll keep this to the Canadian side although I play both US and Canadian side) thought I would keep reviews on these courses as I play them.  I'll try and keep this updated each time I play a new course.

If anyone is looking for some more information on them, just ask and I will answer as best I can.

Converted my media room to a home sim during the pandemic.  The room is smaller than I would like at 16'x12' with 9' ceilings but it works for me.  I am 5'9" which allows me to swing a driver at full speed but those that are taller may have issues depending on their swing plane.  I have a 8.5'x11.5" projection screen/hitting bay that I purchased from Carls Place.  The mat is a SwingTurf from Rain or Shine Golf which is 9'x4' and is fantastic.  No wrist pain and you can use real tees!  The launch monitor is a SkyTrak and using The Golf Club 2019 for playing rounds (SkyTrak for the range and game improvement).  My projector is an Optoma GT1080 short throw.  All of this is powered by a PowerSpec G358 pc.  Throw in some fake grass from Costco and you have an incredible golf practice facility for about $7k.  I posted a couple of links below to help any would be future sim builders.  Let me know if you have any questions on how to DIY.

If you want to see a recent minor disaster (a driver head through the screen and into the drywall) let me know lol.  Just finished fixing that 🤬.

Oh man.  So jealous.  I've been looking into this, but I have no where to be able to put a simulator.  One day maybe when the kids are gone I will have enough room in the garage.

FWIW, I prefer the Pro over the Pro+

It gives me more distance. People knock on durability, but I honestly haven't had any issues. Some balls holding up 36 holes without scuffs.

Been my ball of choice for the past 3 years since I can get them dirt cheap lol

Mmmm.  Good to know.  Maybe I'll look into it a bit more and see about the Pro.

Maybe time for a personal head to head comparison!

I think you should be moving up to Vice Pro or Pro+

Their Tour model is a 3pc surlyn ball, not exactly made for spin.

Funny you say this.  I was planning this year to look at the Pro+ instead.  One of the main reasons being exactly this spin issue.

Still going to wait for some type of sale though.  I have enough balls to last me for quite some time.

I have 5 dozen in storage thanks to Santa clause, I've used them in the past, they're decent balls. For the price they are on par, great off the driver for distance, but not as high spin for wedge shots into the greens

I agree with this.  I played the Vice Tour last year.  Found it really nice off the tee, got some good distance.  But started to see problems with sticking the greens  when hitting 8 iron and above.  Overall though, for the price I thought they were excellent value.  I will probably end up buying some more once they have another "Free Shipping" sale.

  7. So recently I decided to pull the trigger and go ahead with finally upgrading my old irons.  My golf game is picking up again and I feel that my current irons just aren't suiting my play.

Modern Golf had a great deal of 50% off a full bag fitting.  So for $200 dollars I was able to fit my whole bag.

Upon arriving to the facility it was really nice, open concept building.  Was able to use a small putting green they had while I was awaiting my fitting, and they also had a nice couch and TV where they had the Golf Channel on.

The building looked new and fresh and had the club building area open for everyone to see.  I thought it was a cool layout and ability to see those guys working away had a nice effect.  Each fitting room (also used for lessons) was large, larger than any type of indoor simulator I've been too.  It was it's own room, with large glass window so you could see out (and everyone could see in).  Minimalistic, but done very well.

Going in, I was working with Justin who started off with some basic questions (tell me a little about your golf game?  What issues do you face, or what do you know about yourself.  What are you looking for today mainly?  Any ideas of brands you are looking for?)  After giving him the rundown that I was really looking for irons, he let me warm up and then starting bringing in some clubs.

While I was swinging with clubs I realized he was chatting with me while I was swinging, but then would usually be dead silent while I hit another 6 or so shots.  He told me that he likes to chat with people to see how they hit when they aren't in their own head (i.e. just casually hitting and chatting) and then also letting them pay more attention and hit some more.  I thought it was an interesting approach and would probably benefit a lot of people (including myself).

Initially when I went in there, I was really set on the Ping G425 iron set.  He said they are great irons, but for me and my swing might not be the best match.  He brought them in and sure enough, they didn't do for me what I thought (or hoped) they would do for me.

Long story short, like most places we went through a bunch of heads and shafts before settling in on some Cobra Forged Tec 2020's  With Dynamic Gold S400 shafts, that I was hitting the best and was able to bring my trajectory more in line with where I needed it.

I was really happy that they didn't try to push me into some overly expensive irons (not that the chosen set was cheap either).  But I was asked right away what my budget was right away and he was able to stay within it.  We also went through my woods, hybrids and wedges and gave me printouts on what best suited to buy at a later time (when I've saved up again).  When I pick up my clubs we are going to do a putter fitting as well as they couldn't do it at the time I was there.

Now, I'm just waiting on the clubs to come in.  I'm sure with all that is going on right now, it's going to be a while.  But I feel like a kid at Christmas right now waiting for Santa to come.

So I ran across this ad the other day for a mini keg system that is supposedly built to fit in the typical golf cart ice chest. I think it would be something pretty cool for us alcoholic golfers to do a review on.

I've got something like this.  Used to use it for camping or sometimes in the back of the car after a soccer game.  I haven't been using it recently as we have some great craft breweries and I like the variety of cans.  However, some of them only have certain things on tap and not in cans.  Then I take this and fill it up with the draught only beer.

  9. Hi All,

I went this week for a club fitting at Modern Golf.  Just squeaked in before Ontario closed down for a month!

It was a nice place and a good experience overall.   Attached are some images I took while waiting for my fitter to come back with a water.

I went in with some idea of the clubs.  I was leaning towards Ping G425, Cobra Radspeed, or Sim2 irons.  But I was open to options and to see what the fitter said.

I told him what I thought, and he first said maybe to discount the Sim2 only because he just had to call a client to tell them that Sim's are expected to arrive in August.  Ouch!

So hit the Pings, Radspeeds, Callaway Apex, JPX 921's.  Something else that I couldn't recall because I hit it like it was a wet noodle with a frog on the end of it.

Then he brought me the Cobra Forged Tec 2020's and said to give them a try that he though they would work well for me.

Well, the certainly did.  Felt wonderfully smooth, good feel, popped off the face.  Numbers on the trackman were where he wanted to see them.  Felt so confident hitting them.

Just never thought about these clubs since I'm a higher handicap player (but improving fast this past year with additional time on the course).  I do have a fast swing speed though (92 - 94 mph in a 7 iron).  Just thought I should be looking at the super game improvement irons. But my fitter said I would be fine in these since I don't have an issue striking the ball in the middle of the face (I just have a whole bunch of other problems 🙂).

So now I have ordered them in with Dynamic Gold Tour S400 shafts.  Can't wait to get them in and hit the range and course.

    Now the waiting game begins.

  10. Wanted to revive this thread since I am in the same boat.  Just placed my order for some custom 2020 Forged Tec.  I'm a higher handicap, usually shooting in the low 90's.  But haven't been putting the effort into it.  My kids are older now, so last year got back into golf.  Decided to upgrade my irons and got these.   I was fitted at Modern Golf for them and I hit them so well.  The feel was incredible and the mis hits were still playable.  As well the feedback was better and I knew exactly where I hit it wrong.

So just wanted to see if OP has been able to use the clubs and what his thoughts were after a season.

  11. First would be to hit my irons better this year.  Just been having consistency issues with them.

But I'm upgrading my irons this year, so I have high hopes for them.

Second would be to consistently shoot in the 80's this year.  Which if my first comes to fruition my scores should be in the 80's

So that friend of mine got a new MotoCaddy M7 a couple of weeks ago and gave me his old Bat Caddy. It's beat up, but I'm an electric push(less) cart convert!

I play with a buddy who has had one for years now.  He's late 40's, been using for years.  I think it's great.  I'm 42 and I keep eyeing one every time I'm at the golf store.  But I just can't afford it.  Putting money into new iron set instead this year.

I like walking as much as I can.  But sometimes when it's the guys, it power carts and beers style golfing.

  13. I am on their waiting list to get fitted this year.  I originally called in February and was told it would be probably May when they could fit me in.  We were in lockdown for Dec, Jan and Feb, so they have a backlog of appointments to get through.  I wonder how they will get to the online fittings when they are so backed up.  Or maybe it's a plan to do online fittings in case we go back into lockdown (plus the added bonus of fitting anyone, anywhere).

It'll be interesting to see how it all works out for them.

  14. Played this weekend and had some fantastic weather.  Friday was sunny and 25C (77F), but wet.   Played Rolling Meadows. Greens were aerated and sanded, so took my 9 holes just to get comfortable on the greens.  Not my best round, but OK.

It had been raining all week and everything was soggy.  On the 12th hole I thought my ball sat great on the green.  Got closer to find out is wasn't sitting, it was fully squatting under the green.

Played again the next day at Peninsula Lakes and the weather was 8C (46F), so a bit colder.  But just got a new driver 2 weeks ago and it was the best I felt with it yet.  Only missed 4 fairways and three of them were just barely into the rough (we won't speak of the 4th miss).  Made a world of difference with the confidence level.  Shot and 85 and I'm happy with that all things considered.

  15. Hi All,

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I've been playing golf for 25 years.  But got into it heavy at first, but then the kids came and life got in the way.   So for the last 15 years, I've played 2 or 3 rounds a year.  Mostly just tournaments with friends.  Back into it this year (thanks COVID!!) and working to bring my score down.  I usually hover around 90 - 95 score, but investments in time (and clubs) has seen my score coming down this year.

What do you love about golf?

Love the ability to be outside with friends.  But I love the joy of the sport as well and challenging myself to get better

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I've been looking at certain things on the web and I seem to come to GolfSpy a lot.  Then I looked into the forum and saw lots of great potential.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

I'm from the Niagara Region in Canada.  I don't have a home course.  When I was younger it was Niagara-On-The-Lake Golf Club.  But now I play multiple courses all over Niagara.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Best thing is the playing golf in the fall in our area.  The red/yellow/orange leaves in the background is stunning at many courses when playing in the fall.  Worst part is the weather and being only able to play half the year.

What do you do for a living?

Sales for greenhouse supply company.  This allows me to travel quite a bit, so I'm looking forward to using my renewed golf interest to play course in other areas of Canada, USA and Europe.

How’d you pick your user name?

I've been a keeper for soccer/football for many years, so easy to use that followed by my area code.
