Hey Columbus spies - I had too much free time the other night and went through GolfNow's course database. Here's a list, not in any specific order of Columbus/Central Ohio courses that look good. Most of them have an architect I know about (Ross, RTJ, Hurdzan/Kidwell/Fry, Arthur Hills) or seem to be a great layout. Let me know if anything should be added or removed. Basically if it's been mismanaged and the conditions have gone down the tubes, or if it's a tee time factory with 6 hour rounds.

Deer Ridge -- Westchester -- Pine Hill -- Table Rock -- Airport -- Champions -- Raymond Memorial -- Delaware -- Glenross -- Dublin -- Royal American -- Sycamore Creek -- Mentel Memorial

Thorn Apple -- Denison -- Apple Valley -- Foxfire -- Darby Creek -- Vernon View -- Virtues -- Split Rock -- Cumberland Trail -- Turnberry -- Safari -- Blacklick Woods

And here are the courses I saw that looked interesting, but couldn't find any info on them. So let's call them maybes...

St. Albans -- Bucyrus -- Village View -- Oakhaven -- Valley View -- Raccoon Valley -- Homestead Springs -- Groveport -- Clover Valley -- Kyber Run -- Echo Springs -- Pebble Creek

Rolling Meadows -- The Ridge -- Chapel Hill -- Irish Hills -- New Albany -- Mastodon -- Trout Club -- Willow Run -- Shelby Crossing -- Bent Tree -- Kings Mill

----Champions, Raymond, Airport, and Mentel are all municipals.  First two very good, Champions I think is a bit better.  I have played Airport, lets say I wouldn't travel from Cleveland to play it, haven't played Mentel.

----Deer Ridge I have played, good course, I'd go back.  Similar in my mind to Ashland.

----Delaware, Glenross, Dublin, Royal American all owned by the same company.  Good courses.  Add New Albany and Clover Valley from below to this list.  Maybe Bent Tree as well.

----Thorn Apple is a long, long course.  Not the greatest shape but good value.  Denison I haven't played but it's generally raved about.  Darby is a great value course, challenging and in great shape.  Safari is next to the Zoo and is in much better shape than in the past, but not memorable.  Virtues is a don't miss (used to be Longaberger).  Add Eaglesticks here as well.

----Oakhaven is a good course, but can be intolerably slow.  Echo Springs is a fun course, kinda hidden.

----The last group I have played Rolling Meadows, The Ridge - both decent.  Trout Club is a lot of fun, I enjoy this one quite a bit.  Kings Mill is decent.

More where you are interested, there are too many here to give in-depth reviews of all!

    36 hole June meetup:

Looking at June 10th for Ashland CC & Brookside GC in Ashland, Ohio. Tee off at Ashland between 8-9 AM then Brookside around 2 (depending on # of spies). If you only want to play 18 that is fine too, you can pick morning or afternoon round, and I'll make sure to include you in the groupings. Bring friends, spouses, kids...this is open to everyone who wants to play!

Ashland CC is classic county club founded in the 1920s that went public close to a decade ago. The course was laid out by Willie Park Jr., a contemporary and sometimes partner of Donald Ross, so expect that old-style golf course.

Brookside looked in rough shape a few years ago, but the city purchased it and now that it's a muni has seen a complete overhaul. It's a Hurdzan/Kidwell design. These two built courses all over Ohio in the 60s & 70s so you're probably familiar. Trademarks are big greens, wide fairways, and courses that play a bit longer. Big ballparks where you can rip driver.

Just back from vacation. Still thinking 36 in june?

Well since you brought it up, I may as well lay out what I am thinking for everyone.

So for May I was thinking Deer Ridge or Ashland either Memorial Day weekend or the weekend before. I am leaning towards Deer Ridge in May because of what I have in mind for June. Something I wanted to do for a long time, and with a second kid due later this summer it may be awhile before I get the chance again...

I want to do a Solstice 36 holes in June, on whatever weekend is closest to that in June. If Brookside is worth it then Ashland would be great for this because Ashland CC & Brookside are only about 10 minutes apart. If Ashland doesn't work out, the one I would really like to do is Mill Creek Park in Youngstown.

    36 holes.

    Original Donald Ross.

    Need I say more?

    I like it!

Have you played Brookside in Ashland? I understand it used to be rough, but it's a muni now and I understand the city rehabbed it quite a bit. The Google Earth images are from 2018 so they show it looking pretty burnt up, but a lot can change in 5 years.

Never played Brookside.  Maybe worth investigating.

I'll have to beg off this one completely. I'll be off work but doing major painting in the house for 2 weeks around then.

Enjoyable round, thanks to everyone for a great opportunity to play a round!

May is out, I am heading out on early vacation second half of the month.

I have played both courses and both worthwhile. Ashland is really easy to get to (off 71).  You can’t go wrong with either.

    see you in June!

We are set for Sunday April 30th @ Turkeyfoot Lake in Akron. I have 3 tee times booked starting at 12:30. Please quote this post if you are planning on playing and provide your name (and buddy's name if you are bringing someone) and what tees you are considering playing. We can make groups that day, but I'd like to get an idea before hand. I've posted the scorecard below. It's a shorter course, but the greens are amazing.

     @MattF @Mr_Theoo @MaxEntropy @gmmiddle @tobybtlr

    Tom (& Mario) Gold tees

George is in, Blue tees.  Looking forward to this.

Wasn't Turkeyfoot just on Group Golfer?  Should grabbed one...

Royal American is a heathland style course. It's not links by definition because it's not built on the coast. If it looks like a links course, but sits inland, it's called a Heathland course.

Does anyone in the Columbus area have info on Royal? Was this a good pick?

I played Royal American last fall.  It's a nice track, I thought in decent shape but not extraordinary.  It has had some negative reviews in the past years but signs are it's picking up (new owners as of this year).  I certainly enjoyed playing there.

If it's on the short list, for a short time you can get 'punch tickets' that drop the cost a bit.  I could get those, and would make the round less than $50.

Hi all! Just starting to kick the tires as the season is more or less upon us. I've been getting emails from courses that are going to open in the next week or so.

Anyway, who is interested in an April meetup? I know conditions can be sketchy cause of rain, so if no one is up for it, we can just plan on May and go from there.

I played 9 today on an extraordinary 70 degree day March 1.  April should be in the 80's, right?  Lets go!

I haven’t posted anything in a long time but seen this today.  I live outside of the Columbus area in Newark.  I’d be interested in playing also.   I’ll make sure I get on this more and check it out.

I enjoy Trout Club over there. Quite a few good tracks in that area.
