  1. I picked up a Wilson D9 7-wood last season and I have to say that I love it. Reasonably priced, good looking at address and very easy for me to hit with confidence. Check it out if you are still looking.
  2. Count me in. Really enjoyed last year.
  3. Happy New Year y'all. I'm looking forward to getting back out as soon as possible. Still a wee bit wet and dreary here in Vancouver for my old bones but I will head out if there are a few dry days to firm up my home course - The Hills at Portal. I'm also looking forward to participating in the 2024 RYP PGA pool - assuming there is one. I really enjoyed playing last year but have not heard anything yet - has anyone got an update? Or did I miss something.
  4. I got interested in used equipment watching Stacked Golf on YouTube. Now I have no fear in looking for and picking up a few clubs here and there to try out. My game is all over the place anyway, new or used, so I can't blame the equipment. But I do suspect the operator is a major factor.
  5. Congrats to ThomasNoble79 for the win in our division. I've never participated in a sports pool but I tried my best to make my way up the leaderboard, but came up a bit short. Regardless it was really fun to be invested in every round - and every shot by my picks. I never had so much fun watching golf and cheering my boys on, or rubbishing their crappy play. I'm looking forward to next year already.
  6. I'm 72 and Kathy is 69. Fortunately we are both in good health. We play and walk, a couple times a week, our home course The Hills at Portal right on the BC/WA border south of Vancouver. The course is aptly named with most holes requiring shots over valleys, or to elevated greens. So needless to say we need to wander up and down the hills pushing or pulling our carts. What a workout a round of golf on this course is. But you know, it feels great. Ya we are tired at the end of a round but what a great combination of play and exercise. We do take a cart when playing other courses that demand it, but I do think I play better when I walk rather than ride so we choose to walk if that is an option. I expect as I get older or my health changes I will likely need the cart if I want to keep playing, but for now walking is my preferred mode of chasing the silly white ball around the park.
  7. Since I struggle with approach shots I'm chipping a lot. If I'm chipping a lot I'd better be able to get it close more often than not so I'm putting for par more often. The best 'tip' on chipping that changed my game was to get it on the green quickly and let it roll up to the pin rather than try for a high shot and land it close. So to master this without 'chunking', the tip was to use just one club - I use the pitching wedge - then take a 'toe down heel up' grip, weight forward open stance, closer to the ball back in my stance, de-loft the club - cock the wrist - on the back swing and hold the wrist solid thru the swing. I use a wee bit of forward knee motion as I find this helps with timing and feel. Oh, and keep your head still. So pretty much like a long putt only the ball flies to a specific target either on the green or wherever it needs to land to get the bounce so it rolls to the pin. When I keep the target in my mind I find I can land it close more often. Practiced this move a million times so now I have a pretty good idea of how far the ball will go and roll depending on the length of my back swing. I can't tell you how improving this part of my short game helped my confidence around the green. Lately I've worked on a flop shot for those times when I need to clear a bunker or I'm short sided. Saving these short game strokes is fun and creative and when executed can save a bad hole from getting really bad.
  8. On the advice of a friend my wife and I have just finished season 1 of 'The Wire'. An old police series from 2002+ but really good story line, production and acting. Did you watch this back in the day? If you missed it, go and find it and enjoy. Now on to season 2.
  9. Played yesterday with my wife Kathy at our home course, The Hills at the Portal in south Surrey, a short drive from our home in White Rock B.C. We had just spent a weekend with friends up country in Shuswap Lake where we played a couple of rounds at Talking Rocks GC. A difficult course I did not play very well, so I was looking forward to getting home to play here. So the third hole is a Par 3 about 150 yards to an elevated two-tier green. This green is really hard for me to hit and if you miss you are chipping up maybe ten or twenty feet. Anyway, today I managed to hit the low tier on the left of the green and have the ball rollup to the edge of the upper tier and stop. However, the cup was diabolically cut on the right side of the lower tier and on a slope about 15 feet away. As I'm looking over the putt I'm complaining to Kathy that the put was impossible. I had to literally putt 90 degrees along the ridge, stop the ball and let gravity take the ball down to the cup. But if I don't hit the cup there is no way the ball stops on the green but rolls off the edge and maybe a few feet off the green - impossible. So you can guess what happened. Yup, made the putt for a birdie on a hole that I rarely par. My shot of the day. BTW - I went on to shoot my best score of the year - an 85.
  10. My lovely wife Kathy gave me a Wilson D9 7-Wood for my birthday/fathers day to go along with the set of D9 irons Santa brought me for Christmas last year. Works like a charm for my 72 year old swing. Out this morning to give a few more whacks.
  11. Watching Rabbit/Hole https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5822112/ Pretty good with lots of action of course, but I like how the plot and dialog align with the real life 'conspiracy theory' WEF master plan to rule the world. Recommended.
  12. Played Whistler Golf Club today with my wife, son, and best friend with whom I have a very competitive golf relationship (I'm sure you know what I mean) . First hole is a fairly straight forward par 4. My tee shot was poor slicing into a few trees along the right side of the fairway. All I had was a chip out onto the fairway to set up my approach. A too light 8 iron left me short of the green by maybe 25 yards. With the hole cut at the back of the green I managed an amazing chip that ran across the green and broke left dropping into the hole for a par! What fun and I'm up 1 already.
  13. Not sure if mentioned earlier but my wife and I enjoy Stacked Golf. Young couple cruse the garage sales, flea markets, Good Wills, pawn shops etc. around Orlando looking for used clubs. John is very knowledgeable so it's fun to learn about used clubs and what to look for. They take their finds to a course or range and try them out with a bit of a review. Fun to follow them as they pick through other peoples stuff - if you like that sort of thing. Inspired me to check out a local Good Will and picked up an old Arni's Own 5 metal with graphite shaft for 5 bucks. It's in my bag as a rescue for deep rough and bad lies.
  14. Played my first round yesterday here in White Rock BC at the Hills at the Portal GC. Nice cool sunny day. I should have hit the driving range before heading out, but nice days are rare here this time of year so I said to heck with it, let's just go and play. I went solo and was teamed with 3 lovely ladies - no pressure - who played 'not bad'. The front 9 I played pretty awful carding a 56 as my muscle memory had taken the last 4 months off. But then it came together on the back 9. Mr. Hyde took over from Dr. Jekyll and proceeded to shoot 4 pars, coming in with a 42. Putting lights out with 31 putts really made the round. So not just one shot - though there were several that made me smile - but coming back from a terrible front to a magical back was pretty cool. Looking forward to my next round to see if I can keep it going.
  15. Just bought 3 Head Covers for my son's birthday from Pins and Aces. They are pretty cool so now I'm thinking I need to treat myself to a new set for myself - Father's day??
  16. Santa brought me (I'm Santa in my house ) a set of Wilson D9's. Research suggests that they fit the need for forgiveness and added distance for a slower swinger like me. So I'm looking forward to seeing how they play once the rains subside here in Vancouver BC. I'll let you know.
  17. A young man walks into a bar, sits down on a stool and asks for 12 shots of creme de menthe. While the bar tender is setting them up he can't help but ask "Why 12 shots of creme de menthe?". The young man replies "I just had my first blow job!". The bar tender says "Wow, well congratulations! Here, let me buy you another." The young man says "No thanks. If 12 won't get the taste out of my mouth, then one more won't help."
  18. Wanting to get a feel for the crowd prior to his speech, a Keynote Speaker at a recent Vegas 'Paranormal Encounters' convention, engaged the audience in a little Q&A. His first question was: "With a raise of hands, how many of you have heard a ghost?". Most of the crowd raised their hands. His second question was: "OK then, how many of you have seen a ghost?". Only a few dozen attendees raised their hand. Wanting to stretch the bounds, his third question was: "Alright then, so how many of you have had sex with a ghost?" One man slowly raised his hand. Intrigued, the speaker asked the man: "Wow. You say you actually had sex with a ghost?" The man replied: "Ghost? I thought you said goat!"
  19. Slow Horses, The Old Man, The Chosen, Banshee - all very good and binge worthy. Watched The Last of Us last night. Very good as well. Opening scenes designed to hook for sure.
  20. Never participated in a pool before but this sounds like fun. Count me in please.
  21. For a selection of more 'interesting' patterns, as well as traditional polos, give this YouTuber's site a look. I have several in my collection and can say that they are very well made and comfortable - and fun - to wear on the course. Nice selection of other golf apparel and goodies as well. Fun channel to follow Matt - a South African - who encourages the average golfer to play 'low stress golf' and who records his shows in S.E. Asia - Thailand mostly. https://waddaplayagolf.com/ "Planting feathers, growing birdies"
  22. So Santa brought my wife Kathy a combo set of Cobra Air-X 6-PW irons with an H-3 and a 7 wood, and a set of Wilson D9 irons 5-PW and AW for little 'ol me. So now she can retire her old Nickent set and me my ancient Callaway X16s. We are waiting patiently for the cold snap (with relatively rare snow here in Vancouver B.C.) to get lost so we can figure out how to swing these new babies. I'm interested to see how/if the stronger lofts on the D9's will help my senior swing restore some distance.
  23. Wife and I are heading down to Oxnard CA - from Vancouver BC - in a couple of weeks to be with our daughter for Thanksgiving. We've planned a side trip up to Monterrey where I've booked a round at Pacific Grove - "poor man's Pebble Beach" - at $75 each, which is not bad. But I've also booked a round at Sandpiper in Santa Barbara. For us non-residents the rate is US$190 each with a cart. In Canadian 'pesos' that's C$225 each. So for us poor retirees that's a fair chunk of change. However, we are on vacation and the course promises wonderful Pacific coast scenery as we play which we are looking forward to. A few years back we played Wailea Gold in Maui and paid much more and it took me maybe 4 holes for the shock of paying around 600 bucks to wear off and settle down and enjoy the fact we were playing golf in paradise. Not sure if I remember the ouch of the cost or the beauty of the course more. BTW - Our home course - Peace Portal - costs a very affordable C$100 for both of us walking.
  24. Loved my "practical" 2000 C5 Corvette coupe which easily gobbled up both mine and my wife's clubs under the hatch. The vette is gone now sadly - but I still have my 1979 Oldsmobile Holiday 88 2 door coupe that does the same plus luggage and at least one dead body! Luckily - when the Holiday is in storage - I have my 2019 Honda Ridgeline which others on this thread have touted. Style and comfort all around.
  25. Check out Rick Shiels' YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFHZHhZaH7Rc_FOMIzUziJA Rick reviews golf balls - and other equipment - in a real world way IMHO. At least one might get some ideas on what to look for. Otherwise a great channel I find very entertaining. Love the way he cuts the ball in half with his giant cutter!
