  1. I'm selling some stuff to tidy up the garage and stumbled accross something I'd forgotten about. I bought these thinking they were going to go on a set of 0317T's when I raised the funds... I think they're going to go on my ZX7s instead.
  2. I think I'm really going to like these ZX7s. Had kind of a cold start with them while I figured out how to play them and what distances I should be play for on each club. They're about 1/2 a club longer for me at the top end, = in the mids, and marginally shorter at the bottom end since the 9, PW, and AW are much more traditional lofts. I went 6 over through five holes then caught fire and finished 3 over for the final 13 holes. That's with two three putt bogeys on the back 9 One of the three putts was not paying attention from 3 feet and the other was gunning it by the hole trying to get a birdie. Ended up 41/40 81. I knew I was playing well, but wasn't paying attention to the score. The better part of the day was that I played with an older friend of mine who's come off a bad couple years of health. He played 18 holes with me for the first time in over two years.
  3. Definitely. I feel like I'm coming off of a step back with my swing. It's starting to feel strong again after some adjustments. Will let you know when I decide to do it.
  4. I've been following this guy since I talked to @GolfSpy SAM earlier this year. He's started to get more in depth into the process and I've watched parts of a couple Livestream fittings. It's a pretty intriguing and extremely well thought out methodology. I love the granular detail about all the variables they check. I saw one video where George Gankas went through the process and was surprised how much he liked the Jumbo grips the fitting suggested -- based on how it seemed to enhance a swing feel of his. Its high in my list to go do a fitting. Not necessarily for new irons, but to see what my 'scrip' looks like based on all the variables. From there I may tune what I have since I'm reasonably sure ( through lots of trial and error) that I've found the sole design that's best for me.
  5. So that meeting was a LOT longer than I thought it would be. Long enough for me to sneak out to the range. I think I'm going to like these things, especially the C-taper lites. Nice penetrating ball flight with good enough spin to stop a range rock on the fake turf range greens. I'm still a little giddy since I've been lusting after these irons since they came out. They're in great shape. Typical bag chatter, typical face wear, and plenty of life left in them. I'm faced with an interesting dilemma since the lofts slide toward more traditional at the bottom end of the bag. For the time being I'm going to bag the whole set and only have my 56 as a true wedge. We'll see how it goes.
  6. I hate to be that guy, but by my count you still have three more L.A.B models to buy....
  7. Well. I feel like I just stole something. I was in Roger Dunn and found a set of ZX7s 4/AW w/ ctaper lite 110s. Not only that, they were also my length +1/2" and close enough to lie at 1º up. I asked one of the fitters who looked it up... "no they're considerably more than that price, but I'm not going to change it. They're as listed." Woohoo. Go to the counter, still feeling guilty, ask the cashiers. "As marked" I'm hoping I didn't react like this, but I'm pretty sure I reacted like this. . The best part is that I'm pretty sure the sale of my Z585s will cover the cost of the ZX7s. I'm not sure what I've done to deserve this, but thank you Golf Gods! Pics to be posted after my 1:00 meeting.
  8. I didn't officially do it. I had an iron fitting where we settled on the right head/shaft combo early and dialed in some of the details. We had about 15 minutes left after so I asked if I could hit the black ops tour. We did a very brief run with my 0311XT then he pulled out the black ops tour, attached a Ventus black, and off we went. It was very easy to hit well (for me) immediately. I wondered aloud if it was the Ventus so we swapped it into my driver and I took a couple more swings. My driver was definitely better with the Ventus, but it wasn't quite as good as the black ops. It wasn't a ton of swings 15-20 but it was enough to have a bit of trackman data. With my current setup (0311XT Tensei AV Raw Blue) I was seeing about 230 carry with 250 on rollout and a quite poor smash factor of 1.39. Spin was 2600RPM. (If I didn't hit it mostly straight I'd be a little frustrated with those numbers) Ventus Black with the 0311XT brought clubhead speed down about 2-3mph, spin down to 2200 RPM, launch down to 2º and smash improved to 1.46. This gave me a lower trajectory with 1 yard extra carry but 10 yards extra rollout from the lower descent angle and a straighter ball flight. With the Black ops tour and Ventus black, club head speed was only down 1.5 mph from my gamer, spin was at 2100 RPM, smash at 1.47, launch in the middle at 15º. Similar straight ball flight but carry jumped 6 yards to 237 & rollout to 271. Its definitely better, but is it so much better that it's worth $900. Probably not. That may change a few years down the road when its on discount, particularly if I can find a reasonably priced CK White/Ventus/ or much much cheaper just put the CK Orange back in w/ a 1/2" extension to bring it back up to standard length. Whatever will give me a stable tip. I'll say the biggest thing I noticed was that I didn't feel like I had to work to get the black ops to do its thing. I just took a swing and it worked. Not quite as true with the XT where the shallower face made for some high face contact with the XT. Maybe I've become a PXG homer, but I really seem to get along with the clubs. Out of curiosity I've started demoing some Pings (because of PXG's start with Ping designers) and I also get along very well with Pings.... Particularly the narrow sole high bounce irons. Surprise surprise.
  9. Ponied up the dough to go play Angeles National. I was hoping for a 3 hour round since it's usually empty because of the price. Looked that way for 4 holes, but was not that way after that. Still finished in 4:15 so not all bad. On a whim I played from the blue tees which pushed me into long iron range on approach for most of the day. Because of this, I only had two GIR (both of my pars) and spent a large amount of time in the greenside bunkers Jack likes to sprinkle around his greens. I was on the bogey train and wasn't able to get off. I feel like I played really well (72/136), I just could not get an up and down putt to drop. I probably made 18ish feet of putts today on 34 putts. Pace was great, lines was mostly good, but they had the pins in spots today that took hard dives right and left about a foot from the cup -- A little frustrating. Overall though it was a good day. I hit some really good bunker shots (8 I think). I also hit some really good approach shots that were just a tad bit off line and I got punished because of it. Angeles National is growing on me and I think knowing the greens is more important for approach than it is for putting. I think I'll be able to score well as soon as I can figure out where to miss.
  10. I threw a a random Tour velvet jumbo on my practice 8 iron and loved it so ventured into Roger Dunn to get some grips to do a full iron swap out. Leaving my wedges as is for feel purposes. I should mention that I was wearing flip flops specifically because I didn't want to test anything... but while I was there.... Long story short I did some barefoot testing. I found a gen 4 PXG 0311XF 3 wood for $99. The 0211 I currently have is easy to hit, but like the 0211 driver doesn't have much go. Too spinny I think? Because of this it's basically dead weight since it's distance total is not much more than a well struck 18 degree hybrid I already have in the bag. After a bit of tweaking and a borrowed tensei blue (from a gen 6) I saw the numbers I was hoping for across multiple swings and pulled the trigger. It seemed to be as easy to hit as the 0211 with more get up and go (along with more adjustability.). I turned it down to 14.5° and mated it to a tensei CK orange I have which should send it a little beyond the yardage I'm hoping for. We'll see whether it performs out on the course.
  11. I'm getting better about this but I do it all the time still. Same with wind. It almost feels like the temp has more effect the lower my index gets, but I know it's because my tolerance for what is and isn't good distance dispersion from my intended yardage(and acceptable trajectory) has gotten much tighter as I go.
  12. Having just played a place with a very strict dress code I can say that I don't think a dress code is outdated. It was nice that everyone looked presentable. Would I have liked to have been able to wear my preferred nice golf hoodie vs. a quarter zip and tucked in polo, yes, but it wasn't an issue. Do I think that should be the case for municipal golf courses, no, but I do think there should be at least some level of dress code. It doesn't bother me when there isn't, but I would mainly say as far as muni dress code goes. No graphic tees.
  13. Well... like a lunatic I woke up thinking "my body may be sore, but that's no reason to not go practice and figure out what went wrong yesterday." No need to take a break. I get to the golf course and decide, "No, I should just go play." Proceed to shoot 41/43 84 on the same course less than 24 hours after my worst round there in years. I hit two 300 yard drives today after never hitting a 300 yard drive. One right at 300 and the other at 312. Yesterday, I hit my first drive of the day off the inside of the heel into a pond. Golf is a mystery. It doesn't feel like much has changed since yesterday, but yesterday I had no feel and today I didn't even have to look for it. The problem has to be between my ears.
  14. I did not follow up yesterdays good round with another good one today. 54/44 98 at good ol Woodley in a men's club tournament. Maybe my worst score at Woodley ever? Some of it was the 30-40 mph Santa Anas out of the NE -- which I discovered is the worst possible direction for the course. From there NE there are exactly three holes where I would consider the wind to be helping. That said, "me" was the problem today. You get kind of behind the eight ball when you start out with a septuple bogey and follow up with a snowman a couple holes later.... . Some ugly swings today and I think my body was just tired from 36 holes on foot in less than 18 hours. Normally that wouldn't be an issue but I've been on a particularly intense practice pace in prep for yesterdays round and I think I've just made too many golf swings in the last three weeks. Time to put down the golf clubs for a week or two. Far too many repetitive stress sore spots right now. The big win of the day was that I didn't mentally melt down. Just kept reminding myself that I played well yesterday and that I was just having an off day and despite the score I did hit some good shots -- just none that were strung in consecutive order.
  15. Got to play yesterday and shot an 45/43 88. (Net doubled out to 87) I'm actually very pleased as the course is one of the most difficult I've ever played. Par 70 that we played from the white tees at 6100 yards -- and it's still a 70.2/131. Relatively benign off the tee, but resulting in very few flat lies for approach into heavily bunkered and protected greens. The rough was thick and the greens are absurdly fast and heavily sloped. Good times. Good workout too, lots of up and down. Overall, I played really well but I just got into trouble 5 times and it cost me most of my strokes. Two triples, 3 doubles. Trimming those down to bogey gets me to 82. Very positional golf course. If you were in good position it was great, if you weren't it could bite you hard. 32 putts on the day with a pair of three putts including on 18. (went back to the Link) 5 pars including two on 200 yard plus par 3s (both of which were GIR) and a birdie on 17. 170 yard shot to 3 feet. My only goal for the day had been to stay in the vicinity of 90 so big win to beat that by two.
  16. Since I've gone back to the well for the week with the Link I decided to put the factory grip back on. Ive been practicing with it since Friday and a thought has crept into my head that maybe you shouldn't tinker with the LAB putters at all, not even grips. That maybe you should just stick with the factory balance and call it good. It's also got me curious if my issues with the DF are related to a LAB pistol grip I installed last month. Time to put the press 3 back on and see. Also, don't listen to the people on the Facebook group. The Accra is money. I'd forgotten about the feedback you get from it.
  17. I think this is why so many people identify so much with Joel Dahmen. We are our own worst critics and it's important to remember to be as nice to yourself as possible. Especially in pressure situations where you may end up making pressure on yourself worse by being continually negative.
  18. I bought a pack of training aids off of amazon. One of the things that came with it was one of these arm bands. It was very helpful for setting up arm structure in the back swing, and maintaining it (the triangle) through the downswing. It makes it very difficult to let your trail elbow fly and get struck behind you wearing it. You can still get out of sequence if you are swinging your arms back instead of lifting them as you rotate your torso and if you initiate the downswing with your arms. I like this Nick Faldo drill The downswing is a little more of a personal feel but it's based off of a combo of the Faldo drill and this Tiger/Butch Harmon Drill. I like to do a partial swing so that the top of the swing (P4) is much lower and it's much easier to maintain your connection. The feel for me is to initiate the downswing from my lower torso and hips and rotate through while letting my arms drop. I will often do this drill without letting the club release (no ball) so I can focus on the connection. There's also a strange drill I've made of for myself that helps me with the feel so take it with a grain of salt. I sit in an office chair for a huge portion of the day and I've found that if I pretend to hold a club at P4, tuck my trail elbow into my torso, then try to rotate the chair it's the exact feel I have when initiate the downswing and am fully connected. Hips, Torso, Arms all moving together -- big muscles doing the work and the arms dropping through to impact. Hopefully this isn't super confusing. Good Luck.
  19. This game sometimes.... I started the year pretty successful and have tailed off in the last month. The feel just hasn't been there and I chalked it up to just being off. Contact has been poor and very heavy and I've been getting stuck a lot. I've been practicing in the garage and haven't been able to figure out what has been ailing me -- including lots of work with some training aids that I've found success with in the past. Nothin. Then today I ran through a half speed drill. Very little arm movement with all the rotation being driven by the torso -- whilst also focusing on maintaining connection between the arms and torso... And there it was. The feel I've been missing. best I can figure is been so focused on maintaining arm structure that I'd forgotten to maintain the connection between the arms and torso. I was way out of sequence and it was destroying my timing. So, long story short, I practiced well and hopefully it will translate back to the course.
  20. Also a dilemma for me. There's a possibility that I'm sending the DF2.1 in to rebalance and shaft swap eventually. It's one reason the Link keeps poking its head into my thoughts. I'm probably going to game it (the Link) this week since I feel like I've gotten way too technical with the DF2.1 and need to step away from it for a moment.
  21. It's only.... All joking aside... I've heard enough about the TPT that if I could I probably would.
  22. Sans the TPT shaft, its still very good. I did not have an easy time leaving PGA superstore without a stock steel one -- especially with multiple employees watching me putt and egging me on.
