Any suggestions on game tracking stats to keep? What are you all doing to track/improve your game? My stats from '23 below.

Well, seems to be that I need to improve in just about all areas. Really glad to have the GHIN tracking to break it all down. Wish there were a few more stats on the APP, but overall I think it gives enough to see the opportunities in my game. The stats don't lie....

Driving: Need to work on club path to reduce L-R and hit more fairways. I'm not in trouble or OB a lot, but hit a lot of approaches from the rough.

Irons: Same as driver....out/in path and occasional fat is causing high % short/right outcomes.

Chipping: With the low GIR % last year I really need to be sharper. Need to work on using bounce more to get more consistent strikes. Need to focus more on landing point and visualize the shot.

Putting: Too many long putts (I think)....improved GIR and better proximity on chips should naturally improve this. Distance control on putts is good from 20 and in....I think.

Wish I knew my proximity stats on chips, so I could see how its impacting my putting stats. My gut tells me I'll get more out of practicing chips, then putting.....so that's what I plan to do.

    2024 Goals:

Driving: 50+% fairways. Missed L&R within 5% of each other.

Irons: 60%+GIR. <10% short and missing L same % or higher than missing right.

    Putts: 31, with 3 putts below 5%.

HCP Result: If I can improve on above stuff, HCP by end of season should definitely be <5.

If you are a member and play the same course all the time, what I like to do is keep my scoring average per hole, luckily, our men's league uses Golf Genius so our data is tracked for our weekly 9 hole matches so I can compare my hole scores versus the rest of the league. Example below. So i need to focus on hole 4 and 6 this year. I did this same process last year and i was scoring an average of 5 on 16 & 17 so i started hitting 7 wood off the tee and leaving myself a 100 yards and i reduced my scoring on those 2 holes.

    image.png.e95e8cc7b0c4e2a0ba0d4343b86fb809.png

Then I like to look at my par 3, 4, and 5 scoring versus other 11 handicaps and better players to see where i need to improve.

Nothing is wrong with my sticks. In fact I have misgivings on parting with them being I love the look and feel. Still great shape. With me it's simply a matter of compulsion of the obsesive variety. Too old for drugs, like a drink but my hard party days are over, stopped traveling even with my wife retired from 35 years at United because I'm ok having two hips and a knee replaced but my spinal stenosis makes continual walking very painfull. In gym 5-7 days a week as I have been pretty much last 50 years since playing college football however I use "recumbant type crosstrainer to take stress of back. Throw all those things together and my kick is annually changing irons somethimes twice in a year. Can't afford just buying new but that's no fun. The fun is trading and when selling hopefully get most of cost together for next set. The irons could be gold and I would still do same thing. Important to always be fair trading and selling because I use forums such as this one to transact. Learned long ago in business always make a deal fair to both parties to maintain reputation.

Long winded answer but you asked,LOL.

I do have a set of PXG 0311P’s but Gen 3 and a sugar daddy 58 degree, all hit less than 10 times, they couldn’t beat out my Mizunos, if you have interest I will send pictures.

I live here on Oahu and have played every course available to the public as well as a couple private clubs.  This a quick top five courses to play on Oahu.  Since Hawaii is a tourist destination you really have to plan for some pretty long rounds.  5 plus hours is not out of the norm.  During the week you might get out in 4 plus.

    1.  Ewa (pronounced EEVA) Beach Golf Course -  This is my favorite.  Great layout, challenging but not overwhelming, always well groomed, greens roll true, staff is professional, new carts with GPS.

    2.  Turtle Bay Palmer Course - Beautify layout and extremely well maintained.  Wind blows quit a bit so be prepared.  Greens are large and undulating.  Not your typical resort course so don't expect the posh treatment.  The tend to pace start times well.  I've never been pushed nor have I had to wait long behind a group in front.  The drive is long from Waikiki but if you make the trip from the Windward side it is a slow but scenic drive.

    3.  Ko'oalau Golf Course -  The most incredible layout on the island.  This course use to be rated the number hardest public course in the US.  The key is to bring a lot of balls and just keep things in perspective.  You are most likely going to shoot 10 over your handicap.  The course is very poorly maintained.  It is almost like backyard golf in heaven.

    4.  Ko Olina Golf Resort- This is a nice course very well maintained.  The staff is courteous and professional.  Home of the LPGA Lotte Open it is challenging if the pins are placed in tournament locations.  Great opportunity to pit yourself against the LPGAs best.

    5.  Navy Marine Golf Course - The second most played course on the island.  I enjoy it because its close to the house, the layout is extremely friendly, and its relatively easy to get on because the staff will work you in if they can.  The greens are super fast but true.  The course is well maintained.  Rounds can be quit long because quit a few seniors call this their home course.

If you have specific questions please feel free to ask.

    Have fun......

Do you have any Maui suggestions? Also, any reputable renting clubs from?

Has anyone traveled from the East Coast to Hawaii with their clubs? If so, how was your experience? My fiancée and I are going to Maui for our honeymoon, and we are going to play at the Plantation Course. Is it worth us bringing our clubs, or are we better off renting?

Great question, I am planning a trip to Maui in May and I'm only going to play one time over 12 days so I wasn't going to lug them around. I saw this site below and he had one bad rating during covid because he did not return all the refund for a cancelled trip. Does anyone have any suggestions, its like $79 bucks to rent at Kapalula?

Don’t own one. Have a 17* Super hybrid turned down to 16. Hit it once from tee. Went only like 209 (not a good swing) but in fairway. Needed to hit 4i to try to get to green. That was hole #11.  I have been contemplating going back to a 3w or 4w.

Based upon your swing speed and driver distance you should be able to get it around 230 ish or so.

I would say an ok round today. 102 (48/54) but that was being +8 the last four holes. Driver was a mess most the day and one bad hole was due to poor strategy after a bad drive. Only lost one ball but not ob. Likely plugged somewhere or buried under all the downed branches.

positives: no 3 putts, mostly solid short game (just one hole where it let me down), solid pitching game from 100 in ( one bad hole where things didn’t go well).

things to work on: driver and really anything of the tee,  only really hit two fairways and when I was in the rough my distance wasn’t there. Should come with swing improvements. When I didn’t take driver off the tee I only had two good balls. Long irons I was hooking them like crazy, no idea if offset or my grip. Keep ingraining swing feels. On the short irons things feel pretty good. Stick to a strategy. This killed me on one hole. 3H drive into a bunch of trees off the tee. Tried a hero shot and hit a tree instead of punching out. Then next shot over cooked a 7i and hit a tree. Ten fatted an 8i. Overall keeping composure and making the smart shot. Lastly is fitness. Although I am going FFG, I am gassed. I forgot my snack at home which didn’t help and this course had lots of elevation. This was my first walking 18 of the year and by the last three holes I was not in a good place.

Overall I’d call this a net positive and see spots to improve and keep growing this season.

Have you ever tried teeing off with a 3wood instead of a driver, some people find them easier to hit than driver?

  8. The Last two years I have played my best golf since high school, I dropped my handicap from an 8 to a 3.6 during that time. I play in a Wednesday night 9 hole men’s league at my club and I probably play every other weekend, practice chipping and putting once a week and will go out on my course and play 4-5 holes a couple of times a week. I played in about 6 tournaments last year and am going to do the same thing this year.

My goal this year is to try and get to a 0 in two years, to do that I’ve got to get more rounds  under par, I was able to do it 3 times last year with my all time low of a -4 (67)at my home course. I also have got to play better at courses named not my home course and be more consistent in tournaments.

    what’s your goal?

  9. I think there has to be a balance between your confidence and playing smart. Here is an example, today on a long par 4 I hit a good drive but was in the rough with a terrible lie, I had 175 to the pin and 165 to cover a pond, my short game is the strength of my game, I punched out to fairway trying to get 100 yards to the pin which is my perfect gap wedge, I hit a good shot to about 8 feet and made it for par. My point is because of the confidence in my short game, I played smart and made a par, a couple of years ago I would have tried to muscle it out of the rough and would have probably made double 4 out of 5 times.
