David Leighton Reid reacted to GolfSpy_APH in Newton Driver Golf Shaft Review (2024)
Here we go with another review!
I will be taking a bit of a longer term approach with this because it is winter and while I could golf... it's is cold. Too cold.
Quick intro - My name is Jamie. I am part of the Forum staff and spend way too much time here on the forum. However I would have it no other way. My bag is often a revolving door of clubs, shafts, grips and more. Recently I was afforded the opportunity to review the Newton Driver shafts which I will be going over today!
I received the 5 dot and 6 dot for testing... although I only ordered the 5 dot. The 6 dot was a nice surprise.
    First Impression
There is no denying this golf shaft stands out (more photos to come soon). It changes color depending on the angle, has minimal graphics and just looks really sharp! I am truly impressed and love the unique purple and green color. The best part is at address it has a dark look and it isn't bright or distracting at all! This is fantastic and makes it even more playable.
The grip is a Lamkin stock grip which normally I would love, however this one is firm and well has a red cap... doesn't match at all so I will be changing this out soon.
I am currently playing a Graphite Design ADDI 6X in my Paradym Triple Diamond. I love this combo and driver. It has been a beast off the tee and has really found a home in my bag. However the promise of a more stable shaft, more fairways hit and more consistency with a little extra power and distance from the Newton shaft was too good to pass up.
The big question is will it live up to the hype?
Not to spoil anything, but the answer to that question is quite possibly!
When holding just the shafts (GD and Newton 5 dot) the Newton definitely felt heavier. Heavier in the tip at least. Where the GD felt a bit heavier in the hand. Not bad heavy, but heavier. For reference the GD is also tipped a half inch short.
First swings felt good too, however again it did feel heavier. Not a bad heavy, stable, solid and consistent heavy. There didn't seem to be much whip or "kick" in the shaft, but I could have a good feeling of where it was throughout and stability through impact. However spin was up and strikes were a little all over.
I am a 260 carry player. I can get the ball out there good when I need to and feel like a good driver of the golf ball as a whole. I ended up having to loft the driver down to 8 degrees to help with spin and with that sorted got a bit more carry, but still was a bit all over the face. So the next step was choking up a bit... well that made a world of a difference. I will without question be tipping the shaft a bit and then getting back to it. Because once I choked up that little bit I started finding the center... over ... and over... and over and over. It was really cool. However the weight did get to me by the end and I started to loose some speed and accuracy. Now this is off season and I am not in golf shape so to speak.
The 6 dot simply was too heavy. It is great, does not feel too stiff or boardy or stout, but just solid. However 70 grams is simply too much for me and maybe down the road I will give it another go.
For now I am going to continue trying, testing and playing, but I think there is some good vibes with this shaft. I was able to get my speed up to 109 mph and just crushed a bunch of drives. Good shaping and consistent flights. Now is it that much better than the GD? TBD... it will be a contender, but more time is needed!
Unforutnately both systems I was on I didn't trust 1000% because I got some weird reads that felt way off so I am holding off on some of the firm data points for now.

I'm back with a report about the Maltby MPF UL shafts. After about a month with the shaft I've concluded that this thing is kickass! I wanted to try something just a little bit more firm than the garofaloi PLB A flex but in the same relative weight class.  I got this in R flex. This thing absolutely delivers on every angle. It still has a little bit of whip to it but it is so ridiculously stable and smooth and I would argue maybe even more consistent than the PLB. Not to take anything away from the PLB but I would say that I even prefer the maltby shaft just a little bit more.. and it's even cheaper! If you've been using any version of the PLB or even other OP variations, and want to either work on  increasing your swing speed or just try something a little bit more firm, try this shaft!

Yeah on the GWX shaft, follow the trimming instructions. Otherwise it would play too soft with the FW wood heads being heavier.
As for SW, I've found certain shafts to be very stable at more standard swing weights. I played the PLB at about D3+. And my MPF UL is about D2+ and both are extremely stable. I would say for the sake of maintaining any feeling, don't go any lower than D0 for sure.
    Hopefully that helped 😁

Thanks a ton.  I just glued together a Maltby TC Pro 5 Wood with the GWX and put a tip on the MPF Pro UL for my 8 Degree stealth.  Was pleasently surprised by the results of the PLBA so am going to do some more testing and report back.

I need to finish setting mine up. I glued the top on, but haven’t trimmed to length and got the grip on. Been too busy. Hoping to get that done this weekend.

Good Friday morning, golfers!  A typical February day with possible rain/snow this afternoon.  However, February hasn't been bad so far with a majority of the days above average temperatures.  Next week the predicted high temps range from 50 to 67.....sweet!
My wife just left for work; bless her for being our breadwinner!

    Good morning, Spies!
@Rob Person glad to hear your wife is doing well!
Not much to report today on the golf front.  I did manage to re-build some vintage irons for my friend last night, after paint fill and replacing ferrules (which I still need to turn).
A busy weekend on tap with a work/play conference in town piggybacking on the NBA All-Star game.  (No, I am not going to the game, sadly.)
I wish you all great days and super weekends!

Further good morning, Spies! On the drive over to Charlotte I was listening to the PGA event on Sirius XM, which was largely the Striped Cat show. Unfortunately I lost the feed on my phone shortly before the hosel rocket. Would have liked to hear how they described that. Also nice to know that the GOAT is capable of shooting one 45 degrees to the right.

they have said it on their social media posts.  They will Puttview system; unfortunately won't be installed for a little while so they aren't using it for this years putter testing.  Hopefully it will be in before the Kingsmill outing.

Good morning from the Great White North.  We have a long weekend up here as well.  Sadly no outdoor golf is possible, but hopefully I will get some time on the simulator.
Still working on some swing fundamentals…  Have a great weekend everyone!

    Great Job…
Pro Tip: The day that your family’s female leader returns, before she gets back:
    1) Count and make sure you have the right amount of offspring.
    2) Make sure that those are your offspring and that they haven’t traded places with friends and/or neighbors when you weren’t noticing..

    Good morning spy’s
beautiful morning in Sooke, not a cloud in the sky but a little windy!!
I did a putting session yesterday with my coach, I know I am in trouble when he brings his IPad out!!
apparently I am not releasing the toe of the putter past the heel at impact therefore causing a push. “Yes coach I have been missing right”
so one of the drills he gave me was to snap a chalk line to the hole then snap one square across the line (I will use a “T” square. Apparently that will help me see the release of the putter.

any other drills you knowledgeable golfers may suggest?
thanks and have a great day!!

Looking forward to the long weekend now that basketball is over and we have nothing to do.... oh wait, the boys start baseball winter training to knock off the rust before evaluations in a few weeks... 🙃
At least I'm off Monday, but the kids are also on February vacation. 😬

decent morning here and the weather is supposed to be decent.
While I can't go to the course,  I went by MGS HQ yesterday and they needed another tester for this years most wanted mallet putter testing so I added myself to the group.   First session is today at 1:00.   I've been doing a little putting at home over the past week and don't think there will be that much of an issue.    There are lots of interesting brand and models in this years putter testing so I am looking forward to getting my hands on the various putters.  I do expect to be worn out after the session but at least I am doing something golf related.
@Rob Person glad to hear your wife is doing well.

Happy Friday everyone.   Although, honestly it's a bit bittersweet to me.  It's the first weekend, in what 5 months that we haven't had football to look forward to.   Well at least pitchers and catchers reported this week, and they are playing golf at sunny Rivera so there's that.

Oops very late today in catching up and saying, "Good Morning!", to all my golf buddies...
Crazy wind was rattling and shaking the house last night, so my normally interrupted sleep was even worse. But at least I'm retired and don't have to get up and get out of the house and go to work!
So I guess I'm off to do whatever da heck it is that retired guys do with their days 🤣
Have a happy and healthy TGIF everybody!!

Good morning! My oldest daughter woke up with a fever this morning. She's in good spirits so hopefully it doesn't progress into anything else. She's fell back asleep nicely and has been resting all morning so far.
Otherwise, it's a pretty standard Friday for us. I am trying to talk my wife into trying a new Greek restaurant that opened up about 20 minutes away from us. Hopefully I can persuade her to agree to some take-out. Then it's movie night with the kids (including popcorn and M&Ms). I think they chose to watch The Croods movie, which I hear is very funny.
    Have a good day everyone!

    Good morning Spies and TGIF!
Well, I survived the round yesterday, but my wallet didn't... 😂 As poor as my exhibition of the game was, had a great time with colleagues on a beautiful day!
Thanks for the article @GolfSpy_KFT , some new games to spice up the matches a little.
Not much going on today but will definitely be getting out back and putting the net to use!
Safe travels @Byrnzee and have a great time celebrating and enjoying the festivities surrounding your sister's wedding.
Enjoy the time off and family trip @Jmikecpa. Will you be playing Disney courses or other local tracks?
Well, my boss is eyeballing me which means its time to go cook our ritual Friday breakfast, so I guess I'd better get ready to go before I get more than "the look."
Everyone have a great day and hit 'em well if you have the opportunity!
