  1. As an older “gentleman” with bad hips and a bad back, my distances are significantly less than the OP. Driver is about 200 so my 3 wood is indispensable. I hit with that club about 180. Next down is a 7 wood (love this baby) at 170. Yes, I know the gapping is off. it took a while to learn to use the 3 wood but I am not sure a low iron will provide the same results.
  2. Safe: most of my clubs Chopping: my 58 wedge. I have lost distance in the last 1 1/2 years as arthritis reared its ugly head (both hips, spine, SI joint and both thumbs and first fingers). The arthritis caused a lack of torque and my index went from 14 to 19. My wedge was great to high high and stick at 70 yards. I now find I can use my 50 wedge from anywhere. Any flight pattern to 90 yards. I have a 3 and 7 wood in the bag and thinking of adding a 5 wood as I need more distance clubs.
  3. There are three shoe seasons where I live in Oregon. In summer I prefer spikeless. In early fall and late spring, I use cleated shoes. Winter and mud season are my cleated boots. After each season, both cleats get checked and if needed replaced. I used WD 40 spayed under the cleat to ease the removal. I am tough on shoes and I am lucky if I get three seasons worth of each pair.
  4. I am surprised by the number of members that will take their putter. If limited to clubs, I think about versatility. With a little practice, putting with a hybrid is relatively easy. im not a long ball hitter, so for me it’s: 3W, 4 hybrid, 5i, and 50 wedge.
  5. I have nasty arthritis in my thumb and trigger finger so not looking for feel nor feedback. I have used many brands, buy them on sale and wore them until they either had a hole or wouldn’t soften up after I put them on. Recently I switched to Bionic. Pricey, but long lasting (3 rounds a week and will last about six months). Bionic is a thicker glove but helps my hands.
  6. I prefer anything with at least 20% picaridin. Works as well as Deet but without the drawbacks. I like Sawyer Products Picaridin. Sprays nicely and doesn't stink.
  7. I don’t loose many balls. Some balls (pro v, and avx), chrome x, can last me 3-4 rounds unless I get a bad scuff. I am one of the that play Kirkland balls as well. However, they seem to degrade in playability after two rounds.
  8. If you like the MG, then You will like the Kirkland as well. Both have low price points. I have arthritis in both my thumbs and index fingers so prefer a “thicker and padded” glove. I have been using the Bionic brand. My hands sweat quite a bit and these gloves hold up surprisingly well despite the price. The last glove lasted six months before becoming unplayable. Thicker may not be the right term but they are comfortable and durable.
  9. I think that depends on how much golf you intend to play. I used to schlep my clubs when my kids were young. But the travel bags and the clubs never fit in the car. I will play every day so it pays for me to have my own sticks. I now ship the clubs, I sure them and make sure they arrive at least one day before me. It is pricey but worth avoiding the hassle. By the way, April is seeding time in Maui. Check the course and make reservations ahead of time.
  10. It was a few years to work out the slice off the driver. I finally found a driver (assuming most balls lost are off the tee), a lighter cobra that I could hit straight. Unfortunately, the shaft broke last week, (a story for another day). Once the driver kept me in play, the rest was easy. my home course is also very difficult, all hills, no flat lies, and small greens that can be punishing - it’s a homie course. If you can play this course, you can play anywhere. Either I spend millions on balls, or learn to play. I am cheap, so learned to play.
  11. I have used the Kirkland sand hit them well. However I find that after a second round, they lose a bit of distance. Other better balls (pro V, TP5, or Chrome X) can usually last 3-4 rounds before degrading.
