  1. Like others have said, I think Maxfli has made leaps and bounds to making a great ball in the Tour and Tour X, great performance and awesome price! Wedges I would go Cleveland, I go back and forth with my old Cleveland’s and Vokeys. For someone looking to get into golf I always recommend Cleveland wedges for the price and performance. Finally for irons, I don’t think they make anything new but for used clubs I’m a sucker for Bridgestone irons. I honestly don’t know who built their clubs but I enjoy playing them, from the few sets I’ve owned. Every time I get a chance I fall back in love with them and it seems only forum members know about these
  2. Callaway White Box Final Thoughts The Quick and Dirty: First and foremost, I think it’s worth saying right out the gate, that Callaway has upped their game and I think they finally have a worthy ProV1 and ProV1X competitor. Coming into this review I have previously tended to play “soft” 2-piece golf balls, as I preferred the feel and performance for my game. I never really thought that I would notice a significant difference in performance when comparing my “gamer” to these premium urethane offerings… boy was I in for a surprise. As someone who plays a traditional "soft" golf ball, I never thought that I would notice or appreciate the performance and feel of a premium urethane cover ball like a ProV1. The reason that I wasn't playing something better is because of the price and the ProV1 felt too firm and "clicky" to me, like it gives me instant Top Rocks vibes (I’m looking at you ProV1X). I would say that after getting the chance to test Callaway's new Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X, they have pretty much squashed all that. I found these 2 balls to be a great contender in the premium urethane ball segment. Not only do they just perform but they also feel great! After this test, I am a convert and have seen the light of what a premium ball can do and feel. If you are someone like me who prefers the feel of a softer ball but can benefit from the performance of a premium ball you need to check these out! Feel: Both Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X feel superb with a driver, woods, and irons. As others have said, where these balls really come into their own is around the green pitches, chips, and putts. The only discernible difference that I could pick up on was that the CTX had a slightly firmer feel and had a higher pitch tone when hit with putts. The closest ball in terms of feel to me is the Titleist Toursoft. Distance: Distance was very good and predictable with both models. I had a tough time determining the difference between the two. It was only in windy conditions did I notice that the CT tends to fly true and penetrating, while the CTX seems to be affected by wind more easily. (club head and ball speed didn’t register on one of the swings causing the average of the CTX to be a little wonky) Spin: Now it’s only in the simulator I was able to confirm that the CT spins more for me than the CT.X Both have plenty of spin around the green to stop on a dime. I ran into the issue of not rolling out enough or as I expected. Spin is not an issue for these balls. Durability: I really have to hand it to Callaway, I think this is where they outdid themselves and put it above the ProV1. Both covers performed fantastically! I found the CTX to hold up just a hair better than the CT from all the cart path, sand, and everything in between I could throw at these. Play it or Trade it: I would happily play either ball! But I think CTX was my ball of choice. Now with the nice promo going around of buy 3 dozen and get 1 dozen free, I think I could be open to purchasing these on my own. I think for someone who has strictly played a ProV1 or X you deserve to yourself to give these a try. I highly anticipate that you won’t be disappointed! Thank you very much, Callaway and MGS for this opportunity. As a first-time tester, I thoroughly enjoyed the process, and hope that my thoughts and feedback are somewhat insightful.
  3. Midway Through Thoughts: Overall, I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with the new Callaway Chrome Tour and Tour X balls. As someone who hasn't had much experience with the golf ball offerings from Callaway (only Supersoft, due to price), this has been a fun surprise. My biggest takeaway thus far in my testing is the quality and durability of the ball/cover, it's impressive to see that these balls will put the Titleist offerings to shame. I think this may be a bold claim but I think this might be the best cover in the game right now. Granted, I haven't seen anything on the new TP5/X balls but I still stand by my claim. This Chrome Tour was after 18 holes, a Wedge torture test, and then 2 1-hour sim sessions (warm up and then 18 holes). The Tour X had 6 holes of use and 2 1-hour sim sessions (warm-up and then 18 holes) For me and my game, I initially thought that the Tour was going to be my ball of choice, and to an extent on my irons and wedges, I would have to say that I prefer the spin and feel of the Tour. Everything outside of that though, the Tour X is the standout. I have found no areas that I find it lacking and it just performs slightly better for me than the Tour on driver, woods, and putter. I am hoping to do a side-by-side comparison of the Tour and Tour X on the course next week!
  4. I feel your struggle my fellow Virginian! Let's hope that the weather starts trending in the right direction so we can get out and test these golf balls on a course!
  5. Sim Testing Portion! My goal is to look at the numbers between Prov1, Chrome Tour, and Chrome Tour X, to see if there are any standouts in ball speed, flight, spin, and dispersion. Will also include subjective thoughts regarding sound and feel. Sim used - Full Swing Simulator Clubs Used: Wedge: Nike SV Tour 60* Iron: Mizuno JPX 921 HM 7 iron Driver: Taylormade R580 9.5* Let the games begin! ^Wedge Shots: All the balls felt pretty nice after 5 shots with each. Like others have mentioned the CTX does have a distinct "click" or a higher-pitched sound to my ears that distinguishes it from the others. All spin numbers are within what I would expect. I don't know what was going on but for wedge shots, I was loving and dialed with the CT. From what I experienced on my brief on-course testing and the simulator validating it, the CT is is my ball when I have a wedge in my hand. ^Iron Shots: This is where things started to get a little interesting... After 5 shots with each, I was disappointed with the numbers I was seeing with the Prov1. I was really happy with both the CT & CTX as these are the numbers I normally expect with my 7 iron. The next thing I wanted to see was were there any real difference in the numbers for me if I did more shots... So my next step was to hit more of just the CT and CTX. Starting fresh with another 5 shots of each dispersion map and average numbers from the shots: And another 5 shots of each, target green was set at 175yds: So after 10 shots with each of the CT and CTX and looking at the numbers and the dispersion I would be happy with either. I know I leaked a few out the right with the CT and hit a few thin and short with the CTX... but take those 2 shots out for both and we're really cooking. The takeaway I came away with though is that I haven't been able to put my finger on what it is, but I loved hitting the CTX and couldn't get that thing to move once it's on its line. For me, this is a great thing to see as this winter I have been doing a swing change and my new miss is overdrawing the ball to the left, particularly with my irons. ^Driver Hits: To be fair, I probably was fatiguing a bit at this point since I hadn't taken a break to catch my breath from all the wedges, iron shots, and hybrid sessions that I didn't include because my swing and the numbers were hot garbage, to be frank... Another thing to note with the CT session is that the simulator didn't register my club head speed and ball speed for one of the shots and gave me a "0" so that's why the numbers look really out of whack in the averages for the 5 shots. Again, I do not know what was going on that day but I was loving that CTX!!! Believe it or not, that green blob on the dispersion map is my 5 drives. I never, in my golfing life have been that consistent and tight with my driver that I can put a dining mat over those 5 shots... I was incredibly happy with those numbers and dispersion! Thoughts from Sim Session: Overall, this test was eye-opening to me, even has me thinking that I may have been playing the wrong ball for my game this whole time... I'm just now starting to understand why MGS recommends looking into getting a proper golf ball fitting... This test got me really excited to try a CTX on my next round of golf. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and I can get some real-world impressions after playing both the CT and CTX out on a real course! The other thing I want to test is possibly bringing a Prov1X to test against the CTX and compare those head-to-head. When I have tried playing with the Prov1X in the past I had always thought that it sounded too hard and didn't give me the feel or response that I was hoping for. Trying out both the Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X has opened my eyes to what I may have been missing out on! So stay tuned for that as well!
  6. As far as my first impressions after playing 9 holes with the Chrome Tour. I have to say durability seems to be above par! To further test the durabilty I went down a dark path.... known as the stairs to my basement (my golf cave)... to test the durability of the Chrome Tour against the Prov1. Durabilty Test: My test is pretty simple and very archaic... Hitting a 60* wedge (Taylormade RAC) into a net off a mat... that's it! Starting off the fun was the Prov1. These were the results after hitting 20 wedge shots of the Prov1 (this ball was new and didn't have any blemishes prior to testing) IMG_7992.MOV Now here are the results of the Chrome Tour after the same 20 shots. Note that this was the same ball I had just played 9 with and had the one scuff from chipping prior. IMG_7991.MOV Post-Testing Thoughts: DAMNNNN that Prov1 got Ripped up! I honestly was not expecting that. I have been playing the Prov1 and Prov1X for a few rounds before receiving the Callaway Testers and never have seen this much damage. During the test, I noticed that the Prov1 cover felt softer than the Chrome Tour but I wasn't anticipating this kind of carnage. This is an old wedge and the grooves were sharpened a few months back for the first time in forever, but still no brand-new SM10. I know I will play almost any ball in pretty much any condition, besides being almost chopped in half from a mower.....but I think that the Prov1 would be deemed "unplayable" by most. I think for me the shining light was that the Chrome Tour sounded and felt very similar to the Prov1 during my testing. the gold star goes to the Chrome Tour hands down, only minor scuffing and paint missing from the triple track but at the end of the day I would still deem this ball "playable". Looking to get the Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X on the sim soon!
  7. Thank you again, MSG for giving us this opportunity. I am super excited as a first-time Tester! UNBOXING: I received my Callaway White Box testing balls Saturday afternoon, and I was ready to get into it as I had a tee time for 9 later that afternoon. Like a few other first-timers. this is my first ball test so had no idea what to expect! I initially thought they were all Chrome Tour as I only took out 2 boxes to start messing around with. It was only after I saw testers saying that there were 2 boxes of Chrome Tour and Then the other 2 sleeves were Chrome Tour X that I realized there were two different balls (my bad for jumping the gun). I initially thought these would be right up my alley as I have been trying out playing dedicated ball that works for my swing speed and playing style (Prov1 and Prov1x). Before I would take a ball in the woods and if I liked the feel and sound I would game it... I know there's some golfers rolling in their graves for this slanderish practice..... INITIAL THOUGHTS: First, just wanted to get my hands on them and do the nail/ bite test (I know I'm going to get heavily judged on this, but hey they did this with gold)... and I have to say the cover of the CTX feels firmer to me than the CT. I can feel a little more "give" on the cover on the CT. I have never really been a triple track guy, I usually just sharpie and extend the lines on the model name for alignment. Balls looked perfect out of the box and ready to get used and abused! First 9-hole Round Thoughts: So I got to the course and immediately broke out the Chrome Tour as this was the ball that I was going to try first and play a round with. I first went to the chipping green to warm up and immediately liked the sound feel and spin performance. This is on a 60-degree day in Virginia and the greens were rolling decent for still being "winter". The only thing I noticed after 6 greenside chips was that one of the balls was showing a decent scuff from the wedge. Granted I'm playing with a Vokey SM5 58 and has decent grooves but by no means is this brand new... Onto the practice putting green and starting to try out the triple track and aligning my putts. I'm not going to lie, I am kinda digging it. Really like the way it looks when I hit a good putt and it goes end over end. The feel is good and distance control was feeling nice and predictable with trying out a "new to me" putter, Spider Tour. Starting on hole one, hit a decent drive with no range session to warm up right down the fairway. good flight and predictable distance. The second shot was a nice pitching wedge onto the green with some great spin and stopping power, super predictable. (Par) Fast forward to the first Par 3 at 117yd. Hit a great shot right at the pin, lands about 6ft short, and spins back about another 8-10ft. I hit a birdie putt, honesty by the feel thought it was going to be short but it got there and in for 2! Fast forward to a few holes later and at a long par 4. Tee shot over water and just makes it over. Long iron shot in, landed short left of the green. Have a 40yd chip shot left and land it about 8ft short of the pin onto the green, pin high, the spin control on the chip shot was perfect and to be fair I didn't hit it that well but it still stopped like I would expect a good shot. (2 Putt Bogey). Fast forward a few holes to the 9th. Long Par 5. Decent drive and, good 2nd fairway wood shot to be 30yd short left of the green in the rough. Chip shot was again not that great struck but got the ball up and onto the green and almost rolled in, tap in birdie to finish out. The overall impression after the round is that it plays very similar to a Prov1 or equivalent ball. The good feel and durability is what I was most impressed about. In the past, I've noticed that Callaway balls get scuffed pretty easily and don't seem to last. The picture above was the ball I played with the whole round and still only showed the initial scuff from the practice green. I look forward to doing some Sim testing this week! What area(s) are you hoping this ball will help to improve your game from? I am really hoping that one of these balls could be my silver bullet for me... long and low spin off the tee, able to spin and hold greens and also have the control and feel for chipping around the green and be durable to stand up to long term use and abuse.
  8. Thanks to MGS for giving me this opportunity to be a first-time tester (long-time listener, first-time caller). Looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say and seeing how these perform! About me: Hello everyone, I'm a 30-year-old dad in Virginia. When I'm not working or spending time with my son and wife I'm always trying to do something golf-related. My wife says I'm obsessed but I think it's a healthy-ish addiction..... I mean obsession.... I am always researching and buying and selling clubs to support the club junkie in me. I have been playing consistently since the start of Covid and have been running with it since. Looking to find my way down to single-digit handicap numbers this season. My game: I'm NOT a long hitter off the tee compared to most other people I play with. My driver's CHS is upper 90s to low 100s. Currently working this off-season to be more consistent with the driver. My strengths are my iron play and short game, but once I'm on the green... it's anyone's guess. I'd say that my weakness tends to be my putting cause which is about as consistent as the weather around here, this time of the year... Stock Yardages (Total): Driver: 260 yards, 3 wood: 235 yards, 3 hybrid: 210 yards, 4 hybrid: 200 yards, 5 iron: 193 yards, 6 iron: 184 yards, 7 iron: 165 yards, 8 iron: 154 yards, 9 iron: 140 yards, PW: 131 yards, GW: 115 yards, SW (54*): 90 yards, LW (58*): 75 yards Equipment: I currently game a Callaway Rogue ST Max LS driver at 9*, and Max 3 wood. Epic Flash 3 hybrid, a BB19 4 Hybrid, and then Mizuno JPX 921 HM 5i-GW, Vokey SM5 SW, and LW. Current Ball: My current golf ball is usually a Titleist ProV1. But I like to rotate between Callaway Supersoft & Hex Tour and Titleist Tour Soft if I'm being cheap and know if some water will be in play. I prefer a "softer" feeling golf ball that has more of a muted "thud" than a top rocks clicky clack special if that makes any sense. What I Want From This Test: I'm hoping that the Callaway ball that we get to test is a lower-spinning golf ball that I could game (as long as it comes in cheaper than a ProV1). I generally tend get pretty spinny with my driver off the tee and would benefit from a golf ball that gives me low spin with a driver, good spin with irons and wedges, and feels kinda soft. I tend to prefer that softer-feeling golf balls. How I'm Going To Test This: Thankfully I have access to a Full Swing simulator at my office and that is usually how I spend my lunch break and how I primarily tend to test this ball out against my current golf ball rotation. I also have a Flightscope Mevo that I use on the range and as a backup to verify the numbers I'm seeing on the simulator. I plan to then get some outside range time to watch the flight and spin and play some rounds on the cold wet damp courses here in Virginia. I tend to find that the Callaway Hex Tour is a durable staple for me and while I like the Tour Soft feel, they seem to not be as durable or hold up as long as the Callaway and I chew through those quicker so I'm interested to see how these hold up! Like many others here, this will be my first time as a tester. I'm very excited to share my thoughts, numbers, and feedback with everyone, and looking forward to the discussion!
  9. Would love to throw my name in the hat for a chance to test these out! 1. Current Setup: Driver - Rogue ST Max LS, Stiff 3W - Rogue ST Max, Stiff 3H - Epic Flash, SR Flex 4H - Great Big Bertha 2. my current setup seems to work okay, I don't think it's the best setup I could have as I think with a new swing I have overlapping gaps. If the driver doesn't want to work for me that day I have been able t really rely on my 3 wood off the tee. now off the deck I have been struggling recently with hitting my woods off the deck... 3. I would love to test these Mizuno clubs as I am now on my 2nd set of Mizuno irons (current gamer JPX 921HM) but have never had the chance to try out their woods and driver. I have heard from club reviewers that they are very highly underrated and want to see if I have been missing something with sticking to Callaway. Love to give them a whack
  10. Full bag crossed hand golfer here. Right handed but do everything left and didn’t have access to left handed clubs growing up and here we are 20 years later… cross handed monstrosity. I’ve been kinda worried to ever get proper golf lessons because I’d be laughed out of the bay… I’m sitting at like a 12 hdcp. Random playing partners are always in awe to see how I can even make contact with the ball lol. IMG_0673.mov
  11. I bought my first pair of dedicated golf shoes this past year from Amazon. I went spikeless for the versatility and comfort and as I rarely play very hilly courses and in wet conditions. The Foot Joy Flex XP has been great and when the course is a little damp and muddy it's a non issues being waterproof. I recommend them to anyone looking for a relatively cheap shoe that does the job and doesn't look terrible. I paid $55 shipped.
  12. Howdy from Northern Virginia! - I have been playing golf since about 2020 (Covid golfer). I am about a 12 handicap and hoping to get down to single digits this summer! - I love golf as it's such a great way to get outside and get exercise. I also love that it's a very low-impact sport and feels like it's very open to everyone. This sport is so humbling and feeling when you "get it right" that one time is a feeling I haven't been able to replicate and why I continue to play every opportunity I get. - I have been a "lurker" on MyGolfSpy from all the articles and reviews that they do for years. I guess I felt that it was time to really dive in and join the community! - I recently moved to Northern Virginia, originally from the great state of Maine. My home course is Algonkian cause it's down the road from me but I probably play Brambleton just as much if not more. - The best is that golf courses are open year-round for the most part! I love winter golf as I never had the chance to play back in Maine! I think the worst thing is that there is no such thing as "cheap" golf courses in my area and the pace of play is a snail's pace at its best. - I am a staff engineer and a DIY mechanic lol - So growing up in sports I was called "Sous"" for short due to my last name and this one couch called me Doctor because I guess he was a Dr. Seuss fan so I got the nickname DrSous and it stuck!
  13. Cut Line +1 Tigers Score after R2 -1 Really want to see Big Tony with a green jacket on Sunday!
