... Yup, I think the ball "settled" down on those greens and a pop stroke helped get the ball out of its resting place. Of course they were a lot slower too. There were certainly some great putters that used a wristy stroke back in the day.

    Check out Arnie here.
His style was unique in his knock kneed stance, but you can clearly see he uses his wrists to pop the ball.  This wasn't unusual.  Many of the great Golden Age putters did the same.

I would say that some of this has to do with the speed of greens now vs then. I am someone that likes to feel as my hands are not really doing anything in the stroke even though I know there is some movement in them and the move becomes more as the putt gets longer to produce the speed needed. To @chisag point the hands are where my feel comes from despite the fact I try and keep them quiet in the stroke. This is the main reason why I don’t think I could ever do armlock as I am not sure I could ever have good speed control outside of like 10 feet. So I think with not needing as much hands with the faster greens today you can take them much more out of the stroke and eliminate that extra movement that has to be timed correctly and make the stroke that much more repeatable.

... Not so much the hands as the wrists breaking down and flipping. I use my hands for feel in my putting stroke but my wrists don't move. One of the reasons I don't like arm lock for Pro's but could not care less for Ams. It isn't an "advantage" and just like the long putter it is simply to help over come the yips. I believe that is part of the equation, over coming nerves when playing tournament golf. If you don't have the yips there is no question long putters and arm lock putters are more difficult to perfect than a conventional putter. Here is the thing, you don't see any great putters using unconventional putters. They use them to overcome a deficiency.

... An Am with a physical deficiency should be able to use what ever helps them play better. Another reason I have always been in favor of bifurcation, which seems to have pretty divided opinions. I think there is pretty much nothing about a typical Am's game that resembles a Pro's game, so wanting to play the same equipment just seems silly to me.

Odd though, isn't it,  that some of the great putters of old were "pop" type putters who used hands and wrists to motivate the ball. Was it because the greens weren't as fast, is it the glassy smoothness of modern agronomy driven putting surfaces that make us want to take the hands out of the stroke? Thoughts?

I think the armlock is different from the other anchor methods to the core of your body. Those gave a fixed point to pendulum from. I view the armlock the same as different grip styles like the saw, or oversized grips. It’s all just a method to try and take the hands out of the stroke but you still have to move the torso and arms to move the putter.

... I continue to be amazed by the performance of my Qi10. Pretty soon all my longest drives on every hole at my home course will be one by the Qi10. Only 2 left. Three more holes were added to that record today and it might have been the best driving day of my life. The performance is so good it has given me confidence to swing away with max effort while maintaining my balance and tempo.

... #17 is a 265yd slightly uphill par 4 guarded by a big lake with a carry of 250. My normal carry before the Qi10 was in the 225/230 range but a nice little wind at my back I thought I would go for it, something I have never done on this hole. My guess is my carry was 255yds landing just on the putting surface and ending up over the green in the back bunker. Thanks to insanely long drives, I had irons into 3 of the par 5's (5i, 9i, 5i).

... The Qi10 series may not be as long or as accurate for someone else, but I would most definitely demo one to find out.

My balls arrived Thursday as I am international and shipping was a little slower for obvious reasons. I've posted my first impressions of the TP5's. I'll get into some launch monitor data in the coming week, but so far, it's really hard to fault them. I really love the feel of these balls. I didn't think I would prefer another ball to the ProV1 and Srixon Z Star for putting, but this feels incredible off the face.

If it was such an advantage wouldn’t we see half the field doing it? I think balanced mallet putters and fat putter grips are the real advantages in putting - just count the number of SuperStroke grips being used by the field this weekend and I bet it’s close to 95%.

Is there a rule as to how you hold a tennis racket? How about a table tennis bat? Baseball bat?
I don't see why there is any rule against how you grip a club, driver through putter.
I've tried armlock, didn't work for me. Unfair advantage? Couldn't prove it by me. But then, I can't putt with anything.

I think the hype on this being illegal has died down. Not sure it has been shown to be an advantage more than any other new method.
Given that some like Xander tried it and didn't succeed kinda showed it was not a one trick fix for putting.

There’s always that expectation that she’ll spend equal plus on something to make it fair. I’m the cheap one of the two.

Just snagged 3 kids passes that will let my 3 that golf now with me for free the whole season! $30 a pass wasn’t bad when it’s 37 for 18 and a cart!

I like to play the Vice Pro balls. For the price point they are great balls that still give me enough spin around the green with my short game.

I walked 9 holes after work tonight. It was one of the best putting rounds I can remember. The only thing thing I can could critique is I still haven't gotten my lag putting where I'd like it to be. I stayed and worked on lag putting for 30 minutes after the round, and felt I made some progress.
I made putts from 16 feet, 6 feet and 9 feet. I also had a 38 foot putt that hit off of the flagstick. It still had some pace on it, so I don't think it would have went in if I had pulled the flag, but it was uphill and dead center so you never know. The only putt I missed inside of 10 feet was an 8 footer that I under read the break on.
I had 13 putts in all with no 3-putts. I also didn't have any putts that didn't start on my intended line. I'm playing in a scramble tomorrow, so hopefully the F-3 stays hot!

Put my Evnroll ER2 back in the bag and dropped my putts to a season low 27 putts! I also dropped my score to 38/37:75, my best round since changing clubs to Heritage Isles 16 months ago. FIR 5/14 36% GIR 7/18 39% with 3 Birdies(#2 Par 5, #8 Par 3 & #12 Par 4) so I guess I birdied for the cycle!
BTW, I gamed a Bridgestone E6 ball today.

Bought a replacement driver shaft for my new-to-me Ping G430LST. I found the Ping Tour 2.0 Chrome 65X too high launch, high spin and flexible for me. So I picked up a Mitsubishi Kai'Li 60X shaft to try out. Might have time to hit the range tomorrow, but likely I'll be taking it straight to the course Sunday morning to see if it suits me. Ha ha.
I tried out a G430LST with the Kai'Li shaft in the hitting bays at Golf Galaxy a week ago and it immediately felt better suited and stiffer. Their launch monitor showed a more controllable fade and lower launch and spin than I have been seeing with the Ping Tour shaft. Can't wait to try this out!
Also fitted a new Jumbomax Ultralight STR8 X-small grip to try out. I've been trying out different size Jumbomax Ultralight and Zenlite grips to find an oversize grip to settle on for the bag. First time trying a STR8 grip, but I like there not being a taper (I have Golfpride Tour Velvet Midsize Plus4 grips on my irons).

Practiced some tempo putting today. I set up a ruler with checkpoints at 5", 7", & 8" to ensure that when I take the club back farther the result is a putt that goes farther. Hit 50 putts. The tempo felt good, but there were about 10 mishits (maybe 12 even). I think my next putting practice is going to be a gate drill or something similar to reduce the mishits.

Full out is best for most people. But as the guy behind the center said the 90-95% is where the best stay and turn it on when they need it. Slow is going to be relative but guys on tour are taking a lot of speed off. I don’t recall what brysons all out speed is bs what he dials down to but his all out is up there with the long drive guys. Finau is around 20mph less on the course than he is capable of.
to me what it shows is the mindset of “I’ll take less distance for more accuracy” isn’t all that great for scoring which is also highlighted in strokes gained about being closer is better even in the rough vs fairway

Kind of says the same thing the same MGS lab test showed.   I think the key is that if your stock swing is not full out then the full out will be better.   If you are full out with stock, you will start to get out of sync/balance.    I was part of the MGS test and full out was best for me.

I’ve got an 8 and 12 year old girls who show interest. I practice almost daily but never push them to join. I let them play when they want. When I do go out and play with them I don’t push them. They are happy only playing 4-5 holes for my oldest. My youngest she just wants to putt. You just have to let them do what they hand and how they want to do it especially girls
