Was at the MGS mid atlantic outing and was excited about using my H4. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a complete dud.
First: Heading to first tee so I fire up the H4 and after a couple of minutes I get a "No courses withing 1km" message. Power off and on a few times and still get the same message. Fired up the app and it shows that the course is loaded on the device so I can't sync the course again to try and refresh it. Basically have to give up.
Second: Get back to the cottage after the round and try some more with success. Saw @Shapotomousat the cottage and saw he had an H4 and asked if he had any issues. He didn't and the course was found successfully on his. Found on the support forums that this is a known issue and it seems to pop up occasionally.
Third: while I was trying to figure this out, my app started asking to enter the code to setup bluetooth so no I have not connectivity between my phone and H4 so no way to sync data.
Really frustrating weekend with the H4.

Wanted to post a follow-up; put the DF2.1 back in my bag for the MGS gathering in Maryland. It may actually stay for a while.....what is different you ask? I switched back to left hand low. I putted left hand low for about 10 years and decided to switch. Practiced for a little while with the LAB and it seemed like it would work. Fast forward to the weekend and its performance..... 7 birdies, a few lip outs, and some that stopped just short of the hole. This is the type of performance I was expecting and seem to be finding.

For anyone who's had their H4 be jostled free, is it possible the device wasn't fully seated in the clip?
Most definitely a possibility but I can’t confirm. I think where you place it on the belt has some effect as well. I place mine front left side so there is less chance I will bump it with my arms during the swing.

Been a little bit since I have been in here.
Struggles the past few rounds putting. Struggles is all in the eye of the beholder, for me it was missing 6' putts whether it was after a great approach shot or a good lag putt to save the hole....I was just missing and was sprinkling in several 3 putts a round. Nothing to do with the putter just all me.
Well got back on track today. Just love this putter. So smooth, beautiful roll.
Impressive approach game to be hitting them that close.

Is it possible to use the scope to capture distance for a particular club as a way to document the shot without having to go to where the ball lies? It is unclear from all reviews so far if it is capable of doing a club distance analysis from the hitting range mat or tee box when going downrange is not possible. With such a suite of GPS integrated devices it would seem like something that should be possible.
You can use the rangefinder to shoot distances and manually capture the data you are looking for; but range terrain would be a limitation. What you seem to be looking for would be some kind of specialty device that allows you to enter the club and then when you shoot a distance with the rangefinder it stores that distance. I have seem apps built for a specific range that gives you distance to the defined flags based on where on the range you are standing. To,do,what you want, I think you would need to have tags in the balls like Top Golf to automatically capture distances. A GPS by itself only tells you where you are or where a known entity is located.

With 7 rounds with the H4 under my belt, I thought it might be worth looking at the seeing what insights I could get from the detailed information collected and analyzed.
Great stuff. I just hit 5 rounds so I am starting to see some trends....under 50 yards is my weak area.

I was wondering when everyone marks shots as “positional” when shot editing? I do it for punch out shots and other times when I’m making less than a full shot to get around an obstacle like a tree. I saw on Shotscope’s site that laying up on a par 5 would also be considered positional. I haven’t been marking those since I’m generally still taking a full shot. I’m wondering if that is impacting my stats on approaches ? Not that I hit that many greens to matter.
I am only marking positional when I am not taking a full swing due to punching out or something similar.

With the MGS discount code I have to admit I’m very close to pulling the trigger on the H4 handheld, but solely for shot tracking and strokes gained purposes. So, how “clunky” is it to use? I don’t mind editing post round, but if it’s going to be a significant disruption to my pre-shot routine then I’ll just get Broadie’s App and go with that
Not finding it to be a distraction but it is something you need to get used too. I am trying to make tagging the club the first thing I do when in my pre shot routine. Marking putts is pretty easy since I tag my putter when I walk up to mark my ball. The great thing is that you can always edit and add shots that you miss. The first few rounds I missed some shots, but now I am starting to remember to do the tagging.

As an FYI if for some reason you forgot to turn it on until you got to the fairway for your second shot, it'll capture a drive from the tips (don't ask how I know). In the edit mode you can then just adjust the drive to the tee box you used.
If you forget to tag the tee shot it will register driver from the tips.

On additional quick observation on the H4. Yesterday I had both my Garmin S40 watch and Shot Scope H4 side by side and wanted to see how long each took to lock in the satellites, pull up the course and be ready to play. My existing S40 watch completed the tasks in 16 seconds. In the same location completing the same basic tasks, the H4 took 110 seconds.
In the grand scheme of things, the roughly minute and a half doesn't mean too much. Within that time most golfers are stretching, picking out the perfect first hole ball and debating with their playing partners what game they are going to play today (and of course "stretching the truth" on their current handicap). So, that time is easily filled. It was meant more for a heads up. If you are used to 16 seconds, 110 can seem like an eternity.
Was this your first time on the course with the h4? I’ve read that subsequent visits to the course result in faster loads. I use the Neo Ghost and the load time for the H4 is significantly faster.

- Shot Scope website indicates 15 hour battery life. I am not seeing this. I charged the unit on Saturday, played a 4:20 round on Sunday, played a 2:10 minute round yesterday and the remaining battery is 20%. Battery life is probably closer to 8-9 hours.
Following up on battery life. Left the H4; powered off, in my bag since posting the above. I got the unit out to charge for my weekend round and the battery was at 8%.

I'm confused, how could 1 putting everything inside of 4 feet and 2 putting everything else be a bad putting day for anyone with a handicap above scratch? I've been a 1 and that pretty much describes any round I ever had at that handicap level - unless the other putts were all inside of 10 feet that's exactly what we should expect and strive for. Looking at any reasonable chart we just don't make that many putts outside of 8 feet.
How long were the second putts? If distance control was off and the dispersion between short and long was large I’d also consider it a bad putting day.

9 hole league match with shotgun start so I had to do some hole navigation during the round.
Today’s observations:- I haven’t talked much about this but course recognition is very quick; maybe 2 minutes and much faster than my Bushnell that is at 5+.
- the white ring is definitely related to eye position. I was wearing sunglasses and while functional, the white vignetting was pretty annoying.
- we started on hole 11. Was quickly able to navigate through the holes and get to 11. After we completed 18, the device asked if it should end the round. I indicated no and then navigated to hole 10. Once completed I then quickly navigated to the end round and saved the results.

- Analytical data takes time to develop. But even with the few rounds I have in, I need to work on approach game, my <25 yard short game need improvement, and I leave too many putts short.

Why wouldn’t a fitter explain to me why he was putting me in the same length putter, but with a 6* flatter lie angle? Why wouldn’t they ask something about the type head and grip I have on my old putter, and whether I’m comfortable with it or not?
And this is part if your review. If they had said because your toe is way off the ground would you have then questioned the decision? Head type and grip on the old putter aren’t really relevant to this fitting as there is really only one grip option for the DF2.1. What would have changed your mind about the style you chose?
I have read that they didn’t respond to your questions, which is poor service. As for your example, that is how they do a fitting, do you feel a different model would have been better? Would people do that? Sure, people buy clubs everyday off the rack without ever swinging them. Have I bought clubs without trying them.. yep and one of the is a club I regret selling. Knowing what you know now, what would you have selected or enabled you to make a better selection that isn’t part of publicly available information on their website? I know they talked about the grips and the different heads

He implied that ANY putter would be sufficient to properly find ur perfect lie angle. That bothered me.
And in theory it should be. Posture and setup dictates lie angle. I believe the assumption being made is that people take the same setup all the time so if you have a photo or video of setup, you get the correct lie angle. this means that no matter what putter you use, you sole it the same way whether the toe or heel is off the ground. The falls apart if the person does some manipulation based on the putter. People setup the way they do for a variety of reasons…comfort and vision are the two primary ones. Some putters also have design tricks to force you to change your setup…a high toe putter is designed to visually encourage you to lift the heel.
the question becomes what do you think would be different if you did an in person fitting and you tried various lie angles? How would it make it better other than satisfying your curiosity? Reading your posts you have your setup and default to that setup so based on that setup you have your lie angle. Why would you have picked 72 other than it matched your other putter; maybe that one is wrong?

Next round with the Precision Pro LX+ is in the books and I had some new scenarios happen that gave me some more insight into the product. I am going to say my poor play was necessary since I needed to thoroughly test the product and various scenarios
Rangefinder:
- i mentioned in a prior post about the white vignetting that I was seeing when I looked through the viewfinder. After more experimenting it appears it is related to how my eye is positioned in the viewfinder. I am able to get a clearer visual if I adjust the positioning.
- I like the slope function. I knew uphill and downhill shots had an influence on the distance a ball travels. Using the Pro LX has shown how much it does influence the shot.
- the multiple buttons have limited functionality so it is very easy to switch between modes and functions without having to navigate lots of menus.
H4/GPS
- i did knock the device out if the belt clip today, but I don’t know if it was poorly seated or I hit it hard enough to actually dislodge the unit.
- the dynamic green yardages is a nice feature. While it gives you better front and back numbers than the devices that measure from the fairway approach front and back distances I believe the numbers are still based on numbers through the center of the green and not the pin position. Meaning if you are pin high right with a front pin location, the front, middle, and back distances will be a line from you through the center of the green and will make the displays numbers slightly longer.
-
shot tracking: I encountered a situation where I was basically in the same spot for two consecutive shots. Missed the par three right, well below the hole, second shot into thick long grass, third shot went about 3 feet backwards. I tagged the club multiple times, but during my round review I saw my fourth shot was missed.
- Still getting used to adding the tagging process to my preshot routine. I still forget to tag the club a few times a round. Like the missed shot, post round editing is easy.
Dashboard - round review and performance tracking
- we do all this shot tracking to gain insight into our games and where we can improve. The dashboard is a critical part of this as it is where we review the data since it isn’t available on the H4.
- Part of the process is reviewing your data after the round and “signing off” on you round so the data is included in you historical data. Basically you need to remember where all your shots were taken from and what club you used. While most shots are captured, you need to be prepared if they aren’t or due to GPS inaccuracy are in the wrong spot. This is easier on a course you are familiar with but may be more difficult on a course you never played before.
- some of the stats are dependent on how the mapping was performed. When I look at the dashboard for the image below, the 2 shots with the 58 are flagged as fairway shots and not rough. The first was my tee shot so it considered this a FIR. This also happens with GIR when the ball is on the fringe and not the actual green. As a result my metrics are skewed based on how the course was mapped since I haven’t found a way to change the lie type. I can move the GIR shot off the green more but that would then skew distance performed metrics.
-
There is lots of data as you dig through the dashboard…I would say potentially an overwhelming amount of data. While capturing all the performance data is great you still have to figure out what to do with the data to get any meaningful output. The image below is some of the data for tee shots; there is also a screen for club distances, approaches, short game, putting, and scoring.

- I have a pre-shot routine that I go through before each shot. Since I wasn't sure how well the H4 at detecting practice swings, it took me a while to be comfortable with tapping the tag, taking a practice swing (or half hearted one) and being confident over a shot. After the round, it appears that the H4 did a pretty good job deciphering between practice swings and actual shots.
The H4 doesn't record practice swings. The location is determined by where you tag the club and you can take as many practice swings as you want and it won't record anything.

Well doesn't the shaft lean come from the "angled" grip? There really isn't any "lean" of the shaft itself, it's the fact that the grip is angled such that the shaft goes in at an angle. So ... in theory, it is the grip
57 minutes ago, golfinnut said:When the club is soled the shaft leans forward; the shaft starts mid putter and is angles so the top is about even with the face. If you were to look at you picture and mentally adjust the grip so that the shaft entered center bottom and ended center top, the grip would lean left. Since it enters at an angle the grip is vertical at setup.

But the press grip is one of the whole design aspects. Get your hands even with or ahead of the ball. Why change?
While a design aspect, The grip doesn’t move your hands forward, the shaft lean does. The angle in the grip gets it back to vertical. As for me, I’d change the grip but don’t think the change in wrist flex would be a good thing.

Golf is interesting. I was conducting my forum test for the Shot Scope and had the DF2.1 in the bag. I thought it was an up and down kind of putting day but nothing really special and continued to feel like I wasn't getting the ball to the hole. After my round I reviewed the strokes gained numbers from my putting and based on the data I gained half a stroke on a scratch handcap golfer. I guess it may be more in my head than actual performance; definitely something to keep an eye on.
-
Here is part of what I am really excited about with the Shot Scope ------ Performance tracking and strokes gained numbers. As I looked at my numbers from todays round I was surprised how the strengths and weaknesses changed based on handicaps being compared against.
After today's round I would have said my putting was pretty bad, followed by short game. Obviously short game is weak but my putting wasn't as bad as I thought. I am also surprised how fast my approach and tee shot game fell apart as I went to lower benchmarks. Guess it shows that the longer shots are much more important than the shorter shots.

1 hour ago, Samsonite said:I have the Shotscope watch (v3), and absolutely love it. Curious, though, about the ease of use with the H4 considering it's not just always on your wrist as in the v3.
Saw your post about them updating the requested course in 24 hours, which is mind-boggling, to be honest. Super cool. Looking forward to everyone's thoughts!
Took the Shot Scope to the course today and now have some first hand experience with all the tools.
Initial Quick thoughts and an answer to your question @Samsonite:
- The course mapping was there and while I wish they had marked more targets and hazards from a distance perspective the mapping was pretty complete
- I need to experiment with the rangefinder some more. I have always used the scan mode to get distances with my Nikon and while that is an available mode, it doesn't work in the slope mode.
- The viewfinder has kind of a white vignette effect around the edges which makes me think the focus is off a bit.
- With regard to focus, I felt like I needed to adjust the focus for different distances which I never did on my Nikon; not sure if I am turning the focus ring when I take it out of the case but it is something I need to investigate.
- The H4 unit loaded the course within 2 minutes and updated quickly. Not sure about the 15 hour battery life; the charge indicator is at about 50% after being on for 4 hours 40 minutes.
- The H4 can be placed in your pocket or utilize the belt clip (which I did today) which it attaches to magnetically. I just removed the device when standing next to my ball to check the distance, attached it to the belt clip, selected club, and moved the butt end of the club to the H4 to scan the tag. It is a new process but I adapted to it pretty quickly. My biggest fear is that if I am looking for a ball in the woods it might get knocked off the belt clip although the magnet is relatively strong.
- The H4 picked up an extra shot on the front nine and missed (probably because I forgot to tag) 4 shots. This was easily edited via the online dashboard.
- When reviewing the shots via the dashboard, you definitely need to remember your shots as some locations are off slightly and as mentioned some are added or missed.
Overall it is a pretty cool product, but as with anything it is going to need more that a one round evaluation!

Haven't seen it. The only "new commercial I have seen is the LA Golf commercial about the Scotty sweat spot size. What was the commercial you were referring to about?

Fired up the h4 and checked to see if they mapped the course I requested and it showed up as needing to be sync'd and now shows as being on my H4 unit. Less than 24 hours turnaround. Looking forward to giving the product a try tomorrow.

Seems like a cool feature; basically shotlink for the average golfer. Since I only have a few rounds in on any given course the data isnt very detailed, but if you play a course regularly, It should provide a great visual on you shot dispersion and how you can effectively play a course.
