  1. Don’t care if golf is in the Olympics; I can watch golf annd the players involved  every week so I won’t tune in during the Olympics.  I tune into the more obscure sports that I know little about and never see on TV.  I like the underdog story; early jamacan bobsled team, Eddie the eagle, and the athlete that sacrifices things in their life (not my day to day job that supports my family) to simply be able to compete and represent their country.

Thanks -I was aware of the data by round but was looking for the cumulative GIR. I can't recall see the total GIR per course or based on the various cuts 1,5,10, etc.  Maybe that doesn't exist?

On approach shot page it is the green success chart.   It provides an overall percentage, by club, by lie, and you trend over time.

I don't have any of those numbers related to launch, AoA, etc.  A fitting is not available to me at this time. The local sim place has raised his rates again, so at 65 per hour, I may as well wait for the fitting at $125. (That's per club type!)

As far as roll out and such, on full PW shots, my ball typically lands and rolls out 10 or 20 feet with a clean contact. On half and 3/4 shots I can get it in the air no problem, and land it soft. But that's inside 75 yards. My sw is useless in the bunkers, but on full shots, it gets very good flight. Gw is decent too, most of the time for getting over and landing well.

I'm still learning and developing my swing, contact, distances. It just seems odd that once I become semi comfortable with how I play, I go and screw it up by changing something (for the better mostly)

Ive learned Golf is a game of evolution with one's self.

I’d try a higher spinning ball and see if that helps.

I would love to hear more about that. I know my self it took close to an hour of testing with the 3 stock shafts and different lofts, sleeve and weight track to find a perfect fit.

If a tester has to do that for each driver it would take each tester upwards of 40 hours per tester to ensure a best fit scenario...

you need to understand the intent of most wanted testing.  It is designed for the person that walks into the store and buys off the rack or maybe spends a little time trying the clubs.   The results are designed to show which will potentially work best if that is your approach.   Based on your statements, that isn’t how you purchased your driver; which is more of an ideal approach.

as for fitting each driver,  the testers are mostly repeat testers and the team understands our needs and tendencies so the drivers are initially fit to what they think will work when we arrive.  Many of the testers are also fairly knowledgeable on what is needed. We warm up and then hit some shots with each driver to see how it performs.  Adjustments are made to get a better fit and into good launch conditions. if necessary.  No, it isn’t an in-depth fitting,  but adjustments are made when possible.  There are times that the stock options do not work for the individual tester and performance is less than ideal.

Actually the Denali black is the stock option on the true diamond and is available for the Max no charge.

When you go into a store generally the Max is paired with 55gram Tensei and 3D with the Denali. Also my understanding is that when these clubs are tested weights and sleeve settings are not adjusted.bir are hit in stock setting.

For the Max it is a custom option so it is not stock.

as one of the most wanted testers I can assure you that the testers are ft for the best provided stock shaft that works for them and the weights and sleeve setting are also optimized for the testers.

    Hello MySpy folks!

First time poster here in the forum, and looking to get your knowledge on this.

My girlfriend is relatively new to golf. She's played for 1 season but is taking lessons and getting properly good quickly!
Looking to get her a new driver for her birthday, but struggling a bit as she's small in height at only 5 foot 2 inches, but also quiet powerful.

I think she'd greatly benefit using a 43 inch driver, but possibly an A-Flex instead of a ladies flex since she's got some power and speed. My plan is to measure her actual club speed in the bay to confirm this.
Since she's still a novice at golf, I don't think she'd get a ton of benefit seeing a fitter.

Any suggestions where to look? I did see that Wilson offers a lot of customization for little to no extra fees.

    Cheers!

Ask her instructor.  Don’t do a $300 fitting, but have her try different drivers with the assistance of someone knowledgeable….beginners probably benefit more from a fitting than better players.    Don’t judge flex based on swing speed; flex isn’t a standard measurement and is just a letter painted on a shaft; weight is more important.

don’t just buy her a club, she needs to try it first!

Without the height, I can't drop and stop the ball. With the height,  I lose distance.

You can also stop the ball with spin.  Good players flight wedges down.   What are your launch, spin, and descent angle numbers?    How much rollout on a green are you getting?  The other option is trying a higher spinning ball. and another way is to just understand the rollout and adjust landing spots.

For example. I just got fit into an AI smoke Max. I got a 10.5* head lifted down to 9.5* Denali black stiff shaft.
This would never have been an option in this test. The stock lift 10.5*with the stock Tensei 55 gram stiff shaft would not have given me amazing numbers! Even trying the 9* head with same shaft led to very low spinning left shots and I would have never considered this driver.

You purchased an upgraded shaft not one of the stock options.  There are more stock options than the Tensei 55 gram shaft.   You also tried the club and got fit which is the recommendation from the MGS team no matter what the results indicate.

A player in our group this past Saturday hit his drive into the desertscape area.  The ball was close enough to the cart path that he could get relief for stance.  In line with his shot, approximately 20 feet forward of his ball, was one of those power boxes (~12" square and 3' high).  He thought he should get relief for that as well... was he correct?  If no, would it matter how close he was to the obstruction (i.e. impeded his swing)?

The rest of us were pretty sure he did not get relief other than for stance off the path... but we wondered if we were correct.  I think this is covered under rule 16, and since his swing path was not impeded, we were correct.

    https://www.randa.org/rog/the-rules-of-golf/rule-16#16_1a

Yes, he gets relief from the path.   As stated the power box could be considered an obstruction if:

    • The player’s ball touches or is in or on an abnormal course condition,
    • An abnormal course condition physically interferes with the player’s area of intended stance or area of intended swing, or
    • Only when the ball is on the putting green, an abnormal course condition on or off the putting green intervenes on the line of play.

If the abnormal course condition is close enough to distract the player but does not meet any of these requirements, there is no interference under this Rule.

If the box did not interfere with his stance or swing then he does not get relief.

Hi, Cnosil, I meant to ask you how are you?  Your health issue sounded scary.  My toe is coming along very nicely.   One more week in the boot.

I am doing okay.   Today is the first day that I can do full activity and hope to hit some golf balls tomorrow.  We will see how it goes and if the surgery fixed my problem or I need to go down the doctor rabbit hole again.

Glad the toe is doing better and that you can get back out soon.

I am about to purchase a PING G430 hybrid and see no need for a fitting.....what shaft is pings best stock shaft for a high ball hitter with a 90+ MPH swing?

My sarcastic response is if you don’t need a fitting or to try the shafts, you should already know.    My more serious answer would be  Ping Tour or Kai’li because they are the heaviest and best chance to manage ball flight.

did you see how many TOUR guys are now putting cross handed?  Im pretty sure today's winner Jaeger, and a bunch others.  More and more every week it seems to me.  I went cross back in 2016 and like it.  No, no stats, I don't stay healthy long enough to play well weekly.

Jaeger doesn’t putt crosshanded; he is conventional.   I’d also say the newer trend is more claw/pencil.

Your right at the end of the day face angle at impact and being able to repeat that is the most important. This is why you have many different swings and putting strokes among the world’s best. And for someone who can do that with poor starting alignment you don’t change. The reason I focus on starting alignment as much as I do is compensation breeds inconsistencies even in the world’s best. It’s just they can repeat that compensation at such a constant level you would not make huge changes at that point because of the amount of time it would take to change and get back to their current repeatability. But let’s face it none of us are on that level of body control and or have the time needed to ingrain it to that level. So eliminating as much competition as possible is usually the best path and alignment despite being a very common problem is one of the easiest to fix and practice. As a side note on this subject as well the above is not taking in account compensations that have to be made for physical limitations which of course have to be taken account for when necessary.

The main thing I think others should adopt is the aiming aspect of the fitting. Most fittings I see all talk about stroke and what type putter you need for that stroke. That is all important as well. But as someone who used to work in the industry mainly on the teaching side. Most issues come from compensations and the first and most common compensation I would see stemmed from alignment and putting is no different.

Stroke is definitely less important than face angle almost to the point of being meaningless since it influences ball direction by 5-15% depending on who you read.   What I think isn't discussed enough with Edel or most any putter OEM is face angle at impact.   I can aim perfectly every time but if the face doesn't return to the correct angle the putt will go offline.   This could be "fixed" by saying that the player needs to return the face to the same orientation as the perfect aim that Edel helps you establish.   We could look at many PGA pros; I know they are really different and we shouldn't compare since they have and continue to practice what they do,  that don't aim the face perfectly.

  16. There have been some threads on this.  I guess it depends on what you are looking for to include coaching, instruction, short term, long term, and/or online, in person (group, individual)

Generally I schedule a lesson with the pro and review what I am looking for and get some basic input on a plan forward.  Selection of candidates is generally based on discussions with other people that have taken lessons or reviews that I have found or even a recommendation from past instructors.    There definitely has to be a connection from a terminology perspective so that communication is effective.   Really no different than a job interview you talk about where you are with your game, what you want to accomplish,  how the instructor would recommend accomplishing your goals.

The online platforms like skillest offer lots of instructors that provide sample lessons and even discounted/free assessment discussions.

I really is just a trial and error kind of process.
