1. Zensah Compression Socks

    An Official MyGolfSpy Review

    Introduction

We all get older. We're not proud about it, but it happens. As we get older, body parts start to hurt. Activities become harder, and that includes the things you love. If you are reading this review, chances are that the “things you love” probably includes golf. As we age, golf starts to give us aches and pains, and we reach the point where even the walk of golf kills our legs, especially if you are not on the course every week. Zensah, a leader in compression technology sportswear, can provide relief from that. Their products are used in running, tennis, biking, and other sports on a professional level, and now, they are cracking into the golf market.

    The Socks

Like I said, Zensah's socks, and all of their other products, are used on a professional level. Obviously if they are used at such a level, they work. These socks are designed to do four things.

    • Decreased Leg Fatigue

    • Increase Circulation

    • Help Legs Feel Energized

    • Keep Your Legs Fresh for 18 Holes

How does a sock do this? Zensah incorporates graduated compression into their socks, provide arch support to the foot, and input padding for the heel and toes. Combine that with moisture wicking fabric to keep the socks dry and silver ions for thermal regulation and you have one technologically advanced pair of socks. The combination of their design and technology allows them to achieve those goals.

To reach the golf market, they have introduced a new argyle collection that would look good when you are fully in golf attire. Combine that with the normal colors and you have over 14 options to choose from.

    Do They Work?

I will admit, I was skeptical going into this review. I had no clue whether a pair of socks would actually be able to work like Zensah said they would. Unfortunately, I have not been able to play golf due to the massive amounts of snow that I keep getting hit with. So, I put these socks through two different tests. First, I walked, and I walked for a long time. I did this for a couple of days with the socks, and then I put them through a tougher test: two basketball tournaments. I put them and on and played three full length basketball games throughout day one, and two full length games throughout day two. Now, I do not have tools at my disposal that will read the fatigue in my legs and tell me the difference, BUT, what I do have is knowledge of my body. I know how my legs have felt in the past and I compared that to what I would feel after activities with the socks on. Boy, did they work. In complete honesty, I did not even have that much trouble getting out of bed the next day after playing three full length basketball games. Did I mention that they look good too? I was unfortunately not sent any argyle ones, but the black and pink ones looked great, and they looked exactly like they were pictured on the website. Judging from that, the argyle socks that would be perfect for golf would also look perfect with your golf attire.

    Value

This is where things get a little bit trickier with the socks. Yes, they work, but they also have a $49.99 price tag on them. This is when, as a reviewer, I have trouble giving advice to the readers. Don't get me wrong, they are the best pair of socks you will have, but there also other things that you can buy for fifty dollars to improve your golf game. So, here is the advice I am going to give. If you constantly deal with aches and pains in your legs and you have the money, then go ahead and buy them. They will help and you will not be disappointed. It is also worth the $49.99 if you play more than golf. If you are going to use them for golf, running, basketball, bike riding, then go ahead and buy a pair. Just be prepared to wash them often because you will not want to use any other sock to exercise with after wearing them.

    Conclusion

The Zensah Compression Socks are definitely well made. They will help relieve the stress that golf and any other sport has on your legs. Although a little bit pricey for a single pair of socks, if you meet the criteria I mentioned above, then it is definitely worth the fifty dollars. You definitely get what you pay for, and that is one hell of a pair of socks. I know that I love my pairs, and I will continue to use them for all of my activities. I am even bringing them to start my golf season in Myrtle Beach this week!

  2. I swear anyone using this during a casual round would get an 8i shaped dent in their head very quickly. I know that's not the point you made Frank, I'm just adding it though :)

Hahaha thats why it was so hard to test this. Everybody goes out on the few golfing days left and I thought someone was going to hit me with AT LEAST a ball. I'm lucky my playing partners are used to me testing or they would have hit me with something too Thats why I tested this on the practice green. It wasnt to test the drills. It was for my health haha

  3. The KP Golf Tape

    An Official MyGolfSpy Review

    DSC_0091.jpg

    Introduction

Many items arrive at my doorstep throughout the year. As you have seen from my reviews, either they are successful at what they do, or they are not. Whether they get a rating of a 50 or a 100, all of the items start from a good idea. An idea that is put into action so that everyday golfers like you and me can be a better golfer or perform tasks easier. One of those items is the KP Golf Tape. This product, whether you are an official, tournament director, or just an average Joe on the practice green, can make the actions you are performing much easier.

    DSC_0092.jpg

    What is it?

The KP Golf Tape is simply a measuring tape for golfers to use to measure distances between the hole and either your ball or a spot on the green.

    How to Use

The KP Golf Tape is EXTREMELY easy to use. It is basically a four step process. Open the clasp and then secure it around the flagstick. After doing those two steps, drag the tape to your golf ball and read your measurement. After that is done, just roll the measuring tape using the wheel on the back, and then store it. If you need to measure more than one ball, you do not even have to walk back to the flagstick and repeat the process. What makes the KP Golf Tape so unique is the fact that you can rotate it 360 degrees. This just makes an easy product even easier to use.

    How_to_2_web_zps044100f7.jpg

    Does it Work?

Three words come to mind when I think about the KP Golf Tape: easy, portable, and effective.

Easy: As I mentioned above, it is very easy to use. The four step process may seem simple on your computer screen, but it is even simpler in person.

Portable: After rolling up the tape, it easily fits into your golf bag, which I find impressive for 100 feet of measuring.

Effective: It is very simple. The KP Golf Tape works. The KP Golf Tape is even more effective because of the many different things that you can do with it. It is very versatile, and I will describe the many different uses below.

    Distance_Drill_6_web_zpse9618ec6.jpg

    Uses:

Tournament Directors and Golf Courses: Because of its ease of use and 360 degree capabilities, the KP Golf Tape is perfect for Closest-to-the-Pin competitions for tournaments. Not only will it be easy to measure a foursome's shots, but it will be quick because you just have the ability to go around the green with ease.

Officials: This is perfect for officials too. You can easily measure the closeness of golf balls to the pin, which allows for them to quickly decide who putts first.

Average Golfer: This is where the KP Golf Tape shines. Average golfers like you and me can easily benefit from having this product. On the practice green, you can set up different drills. Many golfers talk about setting up three foot circles, and drills of that nature. The KP Golf Tape lets you set up those drills quickly. For lag putting, you can easily measure out different lengths and practice from 30, 40, and 50 feet. How about the ambitious stat keeper? You can easily measure your ball on the course with it. When you use this product, you will become quicker and quicker with it. You can easily gather accurate measurements for your first putt length. By no means does that mean that you should measure when you have a foursome up your butt, but during a practice round, it can be very beneficial. I trust that you golfers who are reading this know when and when not to use it.

    Distance_Drill_2_web_zps789abb88.jpg

    Value

The 100 foot KP Golf Tape retails on their website for $49.95. Originally, I thought that was a little expensive for a measuring tape. After seeing its effectiveness, I can tell you that I have changed my mind about that. If you are the type of golfer that likes to visit the practice green, and you visit it often, it will be very beneficial to you. For tournament directors and golf courses, you will be using it a lot and it speeds up play. Like I always say, you all know yourselves best. If you are going to use this weekly, it is definitely worth the $50.

    Conclusion

I am going to keep this short and sweet. The KP Golf Tape is staying in my bag and I will definitely be using it on the practice green. If you are going to use it on a consistent basis, it will be easily be worth the $50.

  4. I had a very interesting 9 hole round today. First off, I found out why I need to warm up before I go on the course. My threesome had to either tee off cold or wait 30 minutes. We decided to go out cold because we would have been behind three foursomes. So, my opening tee shot with my 4 hybrid was hooked (I never go left). My ball landed in a terrible lie with the ball way above my feet. I aimed right and it went dead straight where I was aiming. I ended up behind tree had to pitch lateral, pitch on and 2 putt. (+2, 6, 0 penalties)

Second hole, I hit a perfect hybrid dead straight with a lower trajectory (I didn't know if I was going to hook again so I decided to keep it low). The fairway goes downhill (not a dramatic downhill) and rolls that way as well. I hit a 3 hybrid thinking I would not even come close to the hazard. Well the low trajectory with the downhill and no wind resulted in a 270 yard 3 hybrid (it must have hit a sprinkler head or something!) that landed in a terrible lie right before the hazard. I had to chop out and landed in more rough, hit on to the edge of the green, chipped, and two putted. (+3,5,0 penalties)

Third hole, awkward par 3. Hooked my 6 iron (I NEVER HOOK) pitch lateral because of trees, pitched it perfectly but it spun back, caught the downhill and went into the bunker. Caught the bunker shot clean and it went OB. Then hit a good bunker shot and one putter for a triple. (+6, 6, 1 penalty)

Thats 6 over through 3 holes. I was getting EXTREMELY frustrated. Even at my handicap I get pissed like that.

Fourth hole, guess what, Sliced my 3 hybrid into a lateral hazard! I was PISSED. Dropped at nearest point. Pulled a 9 iron (LEFT AHH). I had 15 yards and i pitched in! I thought that would be my spark. (+6, 4, 2 penalties)

FIfth hole. Perfect drive over water left me 75 yards to the pin. Hit my 62* which spun back to pin high. MIssed the 7 foot putt BARELY. Tapped in for par. (+6, 4, 2 penatlies)

Sixth hole, I expected more slicing with my hybrid. I aimed left and it went straight. I was 95 yards out with a crappy lie. Left it just off the green, chipped to 4 feet, but pulled the putt. Thats a bogey. (+7, 5, 2 penalties)

7th hole, hardest par 3 on the course. Hit my 7 iron just off the green.Pitch ALMOST went in, but it didn't bite enough, it the downslope and trickled off the green. Chipped to 2 feet and bogeyed. (+8, 4, 2 penalties)

8th hole. Hit a perfect drive down the middle which left me 195 yards left on a par 5. I decided to play to the front left of the green instead of trying to carry the bunkers. I ended up hooking my hybrid (I NEVER GO LEFT). Hit the cart path and went OB. My next shot went left too, but left me on a tight lie. pitch and two putt for a bogey. (+9, 6, 3 penalties).

9th hole. Hit my 4 wood into a fairway bunker. Since it was too high of a lip I had to just get out. Then hit a 8 iron to the fringe. Chipped to 4 feet and one putted for a bogey. (+10, 5, 3 penalties)

I have learned my lesson. Always warm up before a round, even if it is only for 9 holes. It was just awkward going left when I am so used to pushing the ball to the right. Oh well. I thought I'd share since I haven't posted one in a couple of weeks.

  5. Well, I got my first double eagle ever last night...A Tour Spoon on a 511yder..I had it 234 yds to the pin...What kinda sucked was that we were jumping around with a cart so we had to go back and play the complete course...Other than that I had 1 bird & 3 bogies for a 70(-1)...

My putting is letting me down, though I've got to stay with the belly...Jumping back & forth is not going to help...I've just got to get better distance control...And it's not like I'm leaving myself long first putts...Yesterday, my ave. first putt was from 27 feet...

I mean Christ, I'm rammin em by by 4-5'...I've gotta listen to my own advice & putt for the circle...That's what I mean about thinkin like an *sshole....

    Fairways & Greens 4ever....

Congratulations RP! Thats incredible! When I am 234 yards away, I am just trying to get it close to the green, while you are pin hunting haha.

  6. Some nice rounds guys - sometimes it's a matter of just being comfortable shooting a number SeeRed. It's in you but your mind won't let you do it.

I had that experience today - my league is a nine holer. I always play 18 on league nights and am often playing for a few bucks throughout so that the back nine counts just as much as the front - play it down, putt it out kind of thing because the guys I'm playing against are in different groups. This evening was no different. Shot 35 for the league round - again - played just as well on the back and got myself into a position where I need to birdie one of the last 3 rounds to shoot 34 and break 70. I have to tell you it played with my head. 16 and 17 were into the wind - 16 is a brute - 180 over water to a penninsula green guarded by a trap where you'd want to bail out - I caught the green but the wind was left to right in and wouldn't let my draw come back. Nice two putt but no shot at a birdie. 17 is a short dogleg left guarded by a trap on the corner and pond where you would hit driver - you have to fit 3 wood between the trap and the 150 marker which I did - the wind was really coming up and I left my approach short left. (over the pond thankfully) Still I felt like I could jar the pitch and almost did - tap in, par.

So there I was on 18 needing birdie to break 70. Still into that left to right wind - hit a great drive and left myself 112 - a prefect wedge but the pin was hidden behind the trap. I decided to hit a low shot to cheat the wind but pulled it a bit - left myself a 20 foot uphill, side hill putt that I rolled in.

35-34 69 - that means I've broken par three of my last four rounds. Feeling good about my game and yet feeling like I've still got some lower scores to come. :)

Great round Rev! I don't know how you made that 20 footer. At that point I would have 3 putted, but I guess that what separates you and me. You being a 3 and me being a 17 haha

  7. Alright I managed to play 18 today for the first time in over a month. I was very shaky at first but fought my way through 6 at 3 over and then stuff started to kick in and I was even the rest of the way - shot 75 - not bad at all - hit some good shots, got my golf legs under me but did run out of steam the last few holes.

I did chip and putt pretty well which is not surprising given that I've had time to practice those parts of the game - no 3 putts, really no missed putts inside of my 50/50 point - made a nice birdie putt of about 15 feet on the back and had lots of other good looks for birdie there that burned the edges.

I'm happy, happy to have played golf, happy that I showed signs of playing good golf. Played with three great guys including a guy who's always neck and neck with me for low handicap in the league. He shot 76 so I nipped him. I had to laugh because we don't play a lot and have never really talked about equipment - he works at the course and got a new Rocket blz driver. I asked him if it was the stock shaft and he said, "Are you kidding. Stock shafts are for chumps. This one is an aldila that the pro fit me for and then helped me install. It's 44 and a half inches." I told him about this sight and hopefully he'll join the fun.

Glad to see you back on the course Rev!

  8. Played a round on Wednesday and it was sooo bad that I did not even post it. I basically lost my swing. So I played today, and had the worst tee jitters that I have had in a while. I was shanking still on the range so I did not know what to expect. I hit the fairway on the first with my 4H, and then hit a 7 iron fat from a bad lie in the fairway (at least it got over the hazard) and then finessed a SW from an uphill 93 yards to 4 feet and parred the 1st for the first time ever.

2nd hole I hit my 3H in the fairway, layed up with my 7 iron, pulled a SW pin high in the rough, chipped with a 9 iron to 4 feet, and parred.

3rd Hole- Decided to go short on the par 3 because I did not have my confidence yet. Chipped to 5 feet (stupid bowl of a green) and 2 putted with a rim out (RIM OUT TOTAL COST:1 STROKE)

4th Hole- Instead of cutting the corner, I decided to hit a 3H top the dogleg. I hit it too hard and went into the fairway bunker straight ahead (the 240 3H did give me some confidence). Hit the PW out of the fairway bunker fat. Pulled me 62* a little bit and it spun back of the green (Gotta love the 20XI-S ;) ) into a bunker. Hit a great shot right at the pin but it didnt have enough to get up the bowl completely and had a tricky 6 foot uphill putt. I 2 putted for a DOUBLE :(

5th- Great shot over the water. Hit my Lob Wedge to the right rough pin high (compensated for the pull and hit it straight) Hit a terrible chip that went to 9 feet. Missed the first cut of rough where I was aiming and hit the fringe and it didnt die at all. Hit my par put at a perfect speed and looked great going at the hole. It rimmed out and gained speed, catching the downslope and trickling down to five feet. 2 putted (missed the 1st putt by 5 inches) (RIM OUT STROKE COST TOTAL: 3)DOUBLE :('

6th- Hit my 3H to the hybrid, then pulled my SW from 109. It was good because I figured out what I did when I pulled. CHipped to 5 feet. Missed the putt by 6 inches hole high. BOGEY

7th: Hit my 7 iron pin high 6 feet (this is my least favorite hole) to the left. Unfortunately with the pin location, that put me in the rough. I was on a downslope with the ball on a side slope below my feet. It was deep and I had to get it down quick. I pitched it to 6 feet. I could not get it to bite out of the rough, and had to hit it hard to avoid stubbing it. I made another great put with the perfect speed and it rimmed out. This time it only trickled down to 4.5 feet (THE GREENS WERE FAAAAASSSSSTTTTTT Today) missed the put by 4 inches on the high side. DOUBLE (RIM OUT STROKE COST TOTAL: 5)

8th: Hit my driver great into a fairway bunker. Hit a great 7 iron to 150 yards on a side slope. I hit a draw from a fade lie, and when it hit the rough to the right of the flag, it took off and went OB. Pitched on, one putt, for BOGEY.

9th: Driver slipped out of the hands and went OB. Took my 4 wood out and hit it into the fairway, 115 yards out. Hit my SW (predicted the pull perfectly) at a front pin location but went into the rough right in the front. My Chip RIMMED OUT, and tapped in for another Double :(.

    Score: 47

    RIM OUT PENALTIES: 6

I felt great after Wednesday's disaster. And I know I should not use the rim outs as an excuse but it gave me comfort with the score. If the golf gods were with me today, I could have gotten a 41. It just keeps my mind at ease haha

  9. Visit the link to see a snapshot from my round: My Round

I played from one tee up today because I was playing with my uncles. They said I could play from the other tees, but I thought it would be good to hit clubs I do not normally use on my home course.

    HIGHLIGHTS:

I hit my 4 wood AWESOME all day. I love that new club. On holes where I could not use my driver, I would play a TW stinger with it. It was going dead straight 245. I'll take that every day.

I had a bunch of very good shots, and managed the course well on most holes. I know when to take my chances now, and when to just hit the green.

Made some nice putts, including a 12 foot downhill left to right birdie putt on 9. But I did not figure out the speeds of the green until that hole. They cut the greens this morning and a lot faster than they were yesterday.

    Another 44 on the front!

    LOWLIGHTS:

Did not figure out the greenspeed until the 9th hole. I was hitting to the middle and backs of greens, but could not two putt like I normally do because I did not have the feel. I had 4 three putts on the front nine. And this season, I have averaged 1.93 putts per hole. So I was definitely not used to three putts. After I figured out the greens, my putting went back to normal.

I had 4 penalties. The one on the front nine was me just being overagressive, and I had no problem with that. It almost cleared the water, but needed 6 inches higher trajectory. That was more me not knowing what club to hit off the tee because of the shorter hole. I had 3 Penalties on the back nine! 2 on one hole!

The final 5 holes are notorious for being very difficult, and people have not returned to the course saying that the final five holes discouraged them from coming back. I let the difficulties get into my head. I hit a great drive which took a bad bounce, and landed in the high rough I was talking about before. I decided to use a 7-iron just to get it out and then over the hazard, which was 80 yards away. Thats my 165 club for 80 yards. The ROUGH WAS SO HEAVY AND THICK THAT MY BALL LANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HAZARD. Then I went for the green from 250 yards out with a low 4 wood, but it clipped some of the high weeds in the hazard (the rough in the hazard is 6 feet tall) of the clubface, and instead of going through, it died. Anyway, I let holes get into my head which I really should not.

    REVIEW:

Had a lot of great shots and some shots I know I could have prevented. I know for next time.

Played my first round with the Wilson Staff C:25 that I was fitted for online. Loved it off the driver, it went a ton! But SUCKED around the greens. We are talking NO SPIN WHATSOEVER. I played the same shots with the Callaway i(s) and it would bite everytime. The Wilson actually prevented me from getting a couple of birdie chances. I would hit a wedge to the pin and it would roll. I even hit a 300 yard drive on a short par 4 and had 42 to the pin. I took a 3/4 wedge shot with a lot of loft and it rolled 15 feet past the hole. And it rolled uphill! I was shocked! Still, nothing I have hit compares to it off the tee. Right now the Callaway i(s) is winning in the golf ball battle. It's next opponent is the Nike 20XI-S. After that, I will try to get a dozen Penta TP3 and FG Tour (that was what the fitting really said but they were expensive on Amazon where I had a $10 coupon) on eBay for as low as the callaways and nikes ($23) and if not, I will choose between the Nike and Callaway and make that my ball until I can not find it anymore.

I LOVE MY NEW 4 WOOD!

    Final Score: 92.

    IM GETTING THERE! haha

  10. Finally having the stomach to look at this thread because the doctor cleared me to play golf today!!!!! B) B) :D :) I'm so happy, happy, happy!

Jim Thorpe - you dog JP - that's awesome -

6 times plugged jmiller - I'd be ranting too. You must be right on the cut line between bent and bermuda - I miss bent grass but we have this new strain of bermuda that only needs to be plugged once a year - not bad when you can play year round.

While Rover Rick's advice is dead on in that you shouldn't be hitting anything out of the rough that won't get out of the rough and that the idea behind each shot is to make the next one easier (I really like that) I do believe that hybrids are very easy to hit out of the rough - easier in fact than a middle iron. You need to move the ball back in the stance a bit to make your swing more upright and if there's a lot of grass don't worry about catching it a bit fat - you can chase those suckers a long, long way using that technique - just make sure you aim for a spot that will leave you an easy chip/pitch if you miss the green. What you won't be able to do is hit that shot over a bunker or some other hazzard and get it to hold. Most people make the mistake of trying to hit a home run when a double will do FLV.

Try it - you'll like it.

Alright weather permitting I'm playing nine holes tomorrow evening (I'd normally play 18 on friday - my day off but I'm starting this comeback slow.)

Thanks for the advice rev. I'm glad you'll be making it back on the course. I'm looking forward to your post tomorrow!

  11. You guys dont have to read this long thing. I just like replaying the round in my head, which is why I will do this after every round.

BTW my course has a very high slope and a high rating, which is why my handicap is a 16, so 44 is not a normal score for me there.

Played nine holes today. It was not another 44 like last time, but it could have been. Double Bogeyed #1 like I always do (what do you expect when the first hole is the 2nd hardest on the whole course). Par on 2 with a 15 foot putt. Double Bogeyed three because of a very unfortunate bounce. The fourth is a dogleg left. The fairway turns at a 90 degree angle so the green is actually reachable off the tee. The problem is, OB goes along the left side of the fairway tight. There is actually barely any rough on the left side.

    4.jpg

When I was hitting my hybrids well (and when I was that was all that I was hitting well) I would cut the corner and have had either pars or birdies. But after the double bogey last time when I was playing well, I decided to just hit my brand new 4 wood. I thought I would push it like I did on the range and on the tee shot on second, so I aimed at the left side of the dogleg. (BTW, it was a beautiful push. Not too much, dead straight, and FAR) I ended up hitting a draw directly OB. It ended up being my second double bogey in a row. Next hole, I was waiting on the tee box for 25 minutes because the course got backed up, got cold, hit my driver behind the ball for a total of like 15 yards. Went from the blues (3 tee) to in front of the ladies tees (1 tee) At least it did not go into the water (I am putting pictures up because I like doing that with every post :). Oh, and the 1 tee is 301, not 201. That was a typo on my course's website)

    5.jpg

I decided to take out my 4 wood and try to hit a hook over the water and onto the green. I was 295 yards away so I did not expect anything good but I tried. I ended up at the 35 yard mark. Pitched on, and 1 putted from 12 feet. That was a hell of a par. Next hole, I hit my drive to 70 yards from the pin and tried to hit it onto the left side of the green (pin was front in the middle) because I was behind a tree, but the ball clipped the tree and dropped. When it dropped it landed underneadth the tree and 2 inches from the cartpath. I took a free drop from the cartpath, because my wedge would have broken with my swing, and hit it to 6 feet and 1 putted. My least favorite hole was next and I tried to draw my 5 iron, and it ended up going straight, pitched out from the trees, chipped on, 2 putt= DOUBLE BOGEY (an improvement from the triple bogey last round). I did not look at the scorecard, but just so you know, we are at a score of 35. If I par in like I did last round, I have another 44 with not so great golf. I don't know this, and just am excited about my favorite scoring hole.

My favorite scoring hole is a long par-5 and I hit my tee shot and it landed in the fairway bunker 285 away. No big deal, hit my 7 iron, and am in the middle of the fairway 135 to a front pin tucked behind 2 bunkers. I decide to go right at it, thinking if I hit it long, I am safe, if I hit right, I'll have birdie, and if I am short I land in the bunker, which I have no problem from (well, that particular bunker I don't have a problem with). The ideal play was for me to have my 9 iron hit the top of the hill of rough after the greenside bunker and let it trickle down to the hole. That is what I usually do on pitch shots from around that green over there and it works out. So hit a beautiful 9 iron going directly at the pin. As it lowered I got a smirk on my face because it looked like it was going to hit the top of the rough and trickle down. But, it landed 6 inches below that mark and plugged in the lip of the bunker. If it trickled down into the bunker, I would have been happy. It plugged in the lip. I tried my best to get it out, but my attempt had it going behind me back in the bunker. I ended up with a double bogey. At that point, I am a little upset, but I still was having fun out there. The ninth I hit a drive to 95 yards, it a lob wedge that caught the wrong side of a slope when it spun back, and 2 putted from 20 feet to end with a par.

  12. No, FLV, keep them in your phone...Though the advice and tips are sent with the best of intentions, you're doin just fine taking the path that you're on...Stay on it & keep the advice/tips in the phone...You'll get to 5 soon enough..

    Fairways & Greens 4ever..........

If you say so. Thanks for thinking I can actually get to 5 :). I hope it happens some day. I just wish I started the game earlier so that I could have competed. I was always baseball, basketball, hockey, and football. Since my dad didnt play golf, I was never introduced to the game. Then my uncle opened a golf store, and all my other uncles decided to introduce me and my dad to the game three years ago. Now Im obsessed with it. I just feel like if I would have started earlier than three years ago, I would have actually been good by this time. But you cant go back in time. I have made my goal to play in the qualifier for my county amateur next year. Only time will tell if that will happen. Right now I am just glad I joined this forum 2.5 months ago. My game has improved so much thanks to all of you guys.

  13. Thanks for all of the advice! I'll keep your tips in mind

But if you read my post you can see that I also shot a 53 on the front 9 today so what do I know. :P

Yeah, but I look at your handicap and see a 5 which makes me jealous :D

  14. Went on today in the EXTREME HEAT to play nine holes at my home course (par 36). First off, I want to let you guys know that I never was able to hit any iron lower than a 6. I couldnt even get the 5 in the air. After using the new swing in the Golf lesson thread, I can now hit a 3 iron. But, I cannot, and I repeat CANNOT hit my hybrids for some reason. I guess itll take some time on the range to figure that out. Basically, I did not figure out the hybrid thing until the fourth hole.

1st Hole- Very difficult. 4 hybrid off the tee into the rough, 3 hybrid in the rough went nowhere, 9 iron from 150 rough uphill to the back of the green, 3 putted from 80 feet. = Double Bogey (+2)

2nd Hole- Decided to play smart. Hit 3 hybrid off the toe but came out as a push-draw which ended in the fairway, 7 iron to layup, SW to the front of the green. Chipped to three feet. 1 Putt = PAR (+2)

3rd Hole- Hybrid hooked into unplayable lie. Dropped pitched on, 1 putt= Bogey (+3)

4th Hole- Hybrid off the tee went two feet off the ground and barely reached the fairway. Layed up on the par for with a 7 iron. 57 yards out and pushed my pitch a little bit. Unlucky bounce put me in the rough. Chipped on and two-putted for another Double Bogey (+5)

5th Hole- Okay now I am getting worried. I came out today just trying to shoot in the 40s, and Im already in big trouble. I told myself no more hybrids and went on from there. Great drive in the middle of the fairway over water. SW from 110 with too much backspin put me in the middle in the green with a back pin behind a hump. I misjudged the break of the HUGE hump and had 8 feet for par and made it. PAR (+5)

6th Hole- Driver in the fairway. SW from 107 to 7 feet. 2-putted PAR (+5)

7th- Now I come to the hole I hate thinking I have a chance if I play smart. I decide to play a stinger to 190 uphill par 3 (my least favorite hole). I pulled my 5 iron into this HUGE bunker. Took two to get out, then a bad chip and then a good chip and then putts= TRIPLE BOGEY (+8).

8th- Now I realize that if I par out I can have a 44, my goal for this season because I really sucked in my 2.5 years of golf so far. So I try it. I hit a driver dead center down the fairway, lay up accidentally with my hybrid, Lob Wedge from 85 yard rough to 7 feet. 2 putt Par (+8)

9th- Now I AM EXCITED. Some nerves and pushed my drive into the right rough (OB left). I was 157 out in the rough. The green is very skinny but it wide. The pin is tucked front left, tucked behind bunkers. I decided to hit to the middle of the green to try and two putt for my par. I hit it and it drew for some reason and I thought it went into the bunkers. I get to my ball and it is in between the two bunkers. A straight line to the pin has no bunkers. The pin is so close that if I aim for the fringe, and hit the rough, it goes nowhere. If I hit the green, it rolls 15 feet past. From 8 yards out, I stuck the pitch to 1.5 feet. Tap in for a 44!

I was very happy today. I just have to learn to limit my bad holes to just bogeys instead of all of these triples and doubles and I will be okay. And now I know to layoff my hybrids until I go to the range.

  15. I'm in the 80s now because of this! Thank you for all of the members who contributed to this! I'm loving my game right now. I played 9 today and shot 44 and that was with 2 double bogeys and a triple. If I can start making my mistakes less severe and playing the safer side of the percentages more, then I am looking at even lower scores. Thanks everyone!

PS: My handicap dropped to a 16 :D and it keeps dropping! *KNOCK ON WOOD*

  16. That's great!!!...The name of the game is to have fun & it sounds like you had a good time day...May you enjoy many more!....

    The best....

    Fairways & Greens 4ever......

I really was having a lot of fun out there. Unfortunately my home course is having tournaments every day this week. Plus, my girlfriend of two years has her birthday on Friday so Im taking her to the city. Looks like I will be going out Wednesday for nine at a different course. I love the change of scenery, and I actually learned a lot of golf on that course, but it is a tough one. Im interested to see how much carry over I get.

  17. UPDATE: Alright guys. First off, I want to thank everyone for the advice that was given to me throughout this thread so far. I had a GREAT round yesterday. Swing-wise, it me three holes of double-bogeys to figure out what I wanted to do (YUCK!) but once I got to the fourth holes, it was just pars and bogeys from there. I didn't get to play 18 because it was starting to get dark, but I am very confident going into my next round. Throughout the round, I used three kinds of swings. It might sound like something I shouldnt do, but everything I did seemed natural. For my Driver and hybrids, I used my old swing, which worked. For the irons, I used Dante's and for the wedges I used my old swing. For everything inside 60 yards, I used hinge-and-hold. What allowed me to use all three swings while staying consistent was my grip. I used my old grip and it naturally created my old swing (and the hinge-and-hold), and when I used Dante's grip it NATURALLY (that surprised me on the course) made Dante's swing. What helped me the most was the pre-shot routine. It kept me with a nice tempo and I was hitting the ball longer. MY 9-iron was my 150 club, and I hit my 3 Hybrid 240 consistently all day. Thanks for everything guys! Ill let you know how my round goes on monday or tuesday, and will play 18 so I have a score to show for it

  18. I have refrained from commenting on this because I know when I was younger(and even now), I hated lectures...So FLV, look at this as a story..A true cautionary tale..lol...The "pain" RR speaks of is not the type of pain that someone your age & in good health such as yourself should feel now or in the near future...If you do even feel "discomfort"("uncomfortable" in your words) @ your age, that shouldn't be a red flag, it should be a major frickin explosion...It is something that will gradually, over time wear away the cartilage in both your knee(meniscus) & hip joint....

And the unfortunate thing is that the more effective that you become at executing the "slide & snap" the more pressure/potential long-term damage you are doing, no ifs, ands or buts..Ironically, it's an inverse relationship...The better you execute the move & the faster your hip slide & knee "post-up" become, the more damage you're doing...There is a difference between a weight transfer & subsequent hip slide to the left, that is essential for a quality swing & the move that I am speaking of & at the extreme, it is the move that Tiger so effectively used under Butch Harmon...

The lateral hip slide & straightening/snapping of the left leg was a move(s) that I used for about 15 years(mid 30s till about 2 yrs ago)...Let me say up front that it works & if you properly execute the "slide & snap," you will get the elusive "holy grail" distance that most amateurs fantasize about & lie about getting..lol...And I'm talking about a major hip move, not a nudge and a noticable snapping of the knee..People actually commented on mine because it was so prominant..I could vary the force/speed of the slide/knee snap to get that extra "oomph" when needed...Since abandoning this move, I have lost the ability to "reach back," as I have stated, however this is life...I'm ok with my current swing...

The ave. tour pro slides/turns their hips @ 2.5mph...Tiger and the bombers are just over three...The ave. 90-95mph amateur is @ 1mph...This is where the power/distance comes from...Your biggest hitters have wicked fast hips..

Anyway, my hip movement was timed @ 2.7mph(sp:116-118mph) @ the university..pretty good..but the problem was that when I straightened/snapped my left knee, it was like hitting a wall @ 95-100mph, w/only a seat belt on..There's still internal trauma, from sudden stop & sudden, violent internal movement(sliding, shearing, twisting, etc) of soft tisue(cartilage)....Prior to implementing the "slide & snap" as we called it, I had had 8 knee surgeries(3 L/5 R), all football related, and since the age of 45, I have had 3 more, all on my left knee, and two of them were related to lack/loss of cartilage, which while not caused by my swing, was greatly worsened by it....

I'm 52yo...My teacher had tried to change me about 10-12yrs ago, however simply, the results were addictive...While we didn't measure our drives like we do now, when I came through & snapped that leg, my ball was out with anyone's...Anyone's...And I was playing to a +2 & life was great....I played in a Champions Pro Am with a pro who was a Champion's major winner, who I spoke of in another thread, & while he was 55 at the time, he was ranked 4th in driving dist. and the 8 holes that we pulled drivers out & let em fly, he was 1 for 8 in puttin it past me...My point is, this move works...But there's a price to pay...

It's similar to decisions that I made in football at the age of twenty that I was told would effect me in my forties or beyond...Hell, that seemed like eternity & I was "invincible"....I didnt listen then & I didnt listen to my teacher later regarding the hip slide & leg snap(notice a pattern here?...lol)....

I didn't want to hear it..25-40 more yards on top of 275-280...Seriously, save the lecture for someone else...I actually had the "balls"(lack of brains & class was more accurate) to tell my teacher that when he could put a ball where mine were landing, he could tell me what was the best swing for me..Fortunately, he showed more class than I did or deserved and didn't tell me to get lost & I made amends for my ignorance, arrogance & rudeness...

But my point is, we have a way of rationalizing & saying "not me," the potential negative outcome will not happen to me..."I'm different"...If your knee is constructed the same as mine, RRs, JM's or Tiger's, it's not a matter of if, it's when...And that cartilage loss is irreversible...It's gone...

The thing is that you don't even have to "perfect" this move, say get to 2.5mph hip speed to do damage...Less than 2% of anyone who swings a club gets to that speed...I was told by an engineer that if your swing speed is 112 or greater, your hips are in that range...So guys like JM are there...You may/may not be...Doesn't matter....You can damage your knee/hip just as quickly & severely as JM or someone at that end of the scale...

Bottom line, you're young as is your swing...Chances are nothing's "ingrained" that can't be changed fairly quickly with minimal effect on your game...And chances are you haven't maximized this move, so it can easily be replaced...

The books are great as is this forum, however FLV, find a teacher who can help you put together a swing that will last a lifetime, with room for adjustments along the way....

Remember, this was a story, not a lecture...The Best....

    Richard

    Fairways & Greens 4ever......

Thank you for both your story and your concern. I have taken everything you said and will make sure not to screw up my body. I'm talking to the PGA Pro where I work/ my home course on Saturday to start talking about getting lessons. Thank-you for everything!

  19. Thanks for the advice guys. Here's my thing. I feel like I should be scoring a lot lower than I should be (most of you probably think so too). I want to change my swing because I am tired of shooting in the high 90s, and here's why. Usually when I am playing golf, I will show flashes of brilliance. These flashes of brilliance include good birdies and having an eagle opportunity. This is when my scores look like it will end in the mid to low 80s (note: I have never shot in the 80s EVER). But after that hole, without even thinking about it, my swing fails me. This swing fails me when I am full of confidence, and only thinking about the picture of my ball landing on the green. When my swing fails me, I do one of four things. I either severely push my shot out of bounds, I slice it out of bounds, I hit it straight when I have been compensating for a push, which lands me out of bounds or in the deep rough (my home course is very narrow on holes and the 2nd cut of rough is not very wide. I would say 10 yards before it turns into grass that comes up to my thigh), or I'll hit it fat.. Its that consistency in my golf swing that I am searching for, and I am stumped. Because once of those four things happen, it appears at least once a hole for the rest of the round. Yes, most of my trouble is off the tee, but I am working on that. I have that new driver coming in with a shaft that should help me out, but you never know how much that will help. But even when I club down to a hybrid off the tee, I will still get into trouble either on the tee shot or the second shot. MY short game has been great. Honestly, anything under sixty yards I have been great with (as long as I am not in that deep rough that usually takes a full swing to move 10 yards). My putting has been solid too. I have been one-putting so much now that I almost expect it . This is why I have been trying to rebuild the swing now. I need consistency. I have seen myself play as a golfer that is 10 strokes better than my score shows at the end of a round. And thats what really frustrates me and thats why this thread has turned into a rebuild of my swing. I am scoring 3s and 4s and then 3 holes later I am shooting 6s,7s, and the occasional 8. I NEED CHANGE! Sorry about my venting guys :excl:

  20. This is a quick update. The rain in my area has prevented me from golfing at all so I have not had time to practice that much. The only swings I have gotten in so far are hitting my BirdieBall in my backyard or hitting beat-up balls into the woods when their is a break in the weather. The swing is still choppy because I am thinking A LOT during the swing, trying to get the 4 magic moves right. I have the backswing pretty much down, but it is the downswing that I keep messing up on. I mentioned earlier how I have always been guilty of turning my hips. When I make it just a lateral movement, I forget to keep the broken wrists. When I keep the broken wrists, I end up turning my hips. I plan on going to the range tomorrow so that will be good. Hopefully I can get this swing down, because I love the results when I get lucky and make the correct 4 moves.

  21. To add balance to this topic, I'll give my perspective on the Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf. The book describes a swing that fully sets the wrists by the time the arms are halfway back on the backswing. (This is the opposite of a swing where you extend and create a wide arc going back and set the angle at the top of the swing.) With the angle set halfway back, you just continue turning the shoulders fully and initiate the downswing by sliding and turning the hips to the left. Watch Lee Westwood or Nick Faldo swing and you'll get a good representation of the method. Nothing really unique or "magical" except for one thing I'll mention below.

When the moves are executed correctly, a lot of good things happen. The clubhead will swing back exactly on plane, and when you reach the top of the backswing, the left hand and wrist will be perfectly square and perfectly in line and on plane. You will be wound into a tight athletic position. If you move into the downswing preserving that tight, wound, top of swing position, you will hit the ball with an element of power and precision that you most likely have never experienced. You won't have just an "Ah-Ha!" moment, you'll have a "By golly, I can't believe I just did that!" moment. The magic is that when you execute all the moves properly, you'll hit the most amazing, solid and powerful shot you've ever hit. I've read lots of instruction books and experimented with lots of different methods, and none give me the feeling that I get when I use this method correctly.

There are pitfalls. If you exaggerate the moves you can get closed at the top and you'll hit some of the biggest hooks you can imagine. Like any method, you'll always be making adjustments to keep it tuned. But when you get it tuned and do it correctly, you'll hit shots you are really thrilled with.

With respect to hinge and hold, as soon as Michelson came out with the DVD, I acquired a copy. Since I had always used an early set, his DVD meshed perfectly with what I had always done with my swing. A short game swing is certainly different from a full swing, but the hinge and hold is just a method that keeps the hands ahead of the clubhead through impact. That's very important for short shots. The backward break described in Four Magic Moves works fine with shots Phil describes. Whether Phil does it exactly that way is not important to me because the hinge for short shots is not that technical. You sometimes adjust the way you hinge to get different results.

There is a website that advertises a golf "secret" or "magic moves". I assume that is what Rick mentioned with respect to Andy Brown. I stumbled on the site once and knew immediately it was based on this book. I'm always wary of sites that have a "secret" they won't reveal unless you pay. But since I have no experience with this site, I can't say if the service provided is worthwhile or not. I will say that all of the "secret" and "magical" information is available just by purchasing the book. This book had been out of print for several years, so that may have prompted this service. I once found a copy for a friend in a used book store. Then I noticed last December that it was available on Amazon again. Some portions of the book are outdated since it was written long ago, but all of the swing mechanics and discussions are spot on. There is a section on the physics of the golf swing that is very informative in explaining how the golf swing functions. Anyone interested in learning everything they can about the golf swing will like this book.

I completely agree with this. So far, when I execute the moves, the ball is FLYING off of my clubs. I really enjoy this swing. Little by little, I am starting to gain confidence while I am over the ball. I will post how things go tomorrow because, weather-permitting, I plan on playing at least 9. I am not expecting my lowest round of my life, but I do want to see at least one good shot show up on the course.

  22. Will, I am sorry I have to be so anal about this. FL has the book and can see for himself, but Dante spent most of a chapter and more than 10 illistrations explaining why this "Backwards" wrist break was the right one, in his opinion. This is a totally different move than Phil makes in the video.

    backward+wrist+break.JPG

When FL first broached this subject, I went to the video and watched. I gave the 4MM considerable thought about whether to recommend it to him or if it was indeed similar. To me the "Stack and Tilt" was much closer to the "Hinge and Hold" than the 4 Magic Moves primarily because the wrist break with the 4MM is so different than any other method that I have seen.

I also decided that as far as a recommendation of the 4MM goes, I can not recommend this to someone else. I have not only read this book, but also I have subscribed to the follow on from Andy Brown, and recieve emails about this method 3 or 4 times a week for six months. I have watched countless videos of this and it is not something I would recommend changing to.

And here is why. It is an extremely powerful and seemingly effortless swing. But in the long run this backwards wrist break has caused elbow injuries (tendonitis), the lateral hip shift has inflamed a long standing back problem I have, and the straightening of the left leg has caused (is causing right now) swelliing and pain in the knee.

I said in an earlier post I have not fully implemented this into my game, but in reality I did. and it almost ended my golfing. I am not the only one that has had this problem. I kept thinking that this would get easier with time. However, the more I do it the more these injuries keep popping up. I occassionally will hit the ball with this swing and get unreal results. Earlier tonight in the scramble I hit a 19* hybrid 240 yards up a hill and laser straight to the flag and we had a 6' eagle putt. However, the price to pay for this is high.

I will conceed that both swings are set the wrist early swings but that is the only similarity between them.

Yup, the two are very different. Actually, the hinge-and-hold early wrist break is considered a mistake by Dante, and he even shows some illustrations showing that. As far as the swing goes, I like it a lot. Mine is still very choppy, but once I commit to it, I can KILL the ball. Right now, the only problem I having is getting the lateral hip movement. I have been guilty of the flaw of turning the hips, and is something I have done since I started learning 2.5 years ago. Once, I get that down, I will be fine. So far though, I have not felt any pain. I have felt uncomfortable, but no pain yet *Knock On Wood*
