music - I was a music major as an undergrad and love all music particularly classical (baroque if we need to be that specific), blues, big band jazz and funk. I was a trumpet major, specifically. And obviously theology - I have a Master's degree in that - the reason I don't have a doctorate is that I played too much golf when I was young.

  1. Or don’t want to be bothered with college Let’s call it the league for adults who are being illegally excluded from making a living in the NBA and Players Union, At some point that will change
  2. I hate to be a Debbie downer but baseball and now basketball have developmental leagues that players can play in apart from college. In baseball you must go through the draft though - if you choose to go to college you can't be drafted until the end of your junior year, but you may be drafted out of High School and opt to play in the minors. College is the only "minor" league for football. I've come to loath college football for a myriad of reasons two of which are the games are way too long and the quality of play is nothing close to the NFL. DI College football and basketball now pay an incredible amount of money to their players. Players may enter the draft prior to graduating. I generally follow the draft as I'm a fairly avid Giant fan with a minor in the Packers because of my time spent in Wisconsin and my daughter being an owner. I would normally watch however I'm going out to dinner for the last time at my current club with my wife and deaconesses, its highly unlikely that there will be much interest in the draft among that group.
  3. I have no skills in this regard but had to pop in to say hi as a third generation Irishman from an entire family of engineers - somehow that aptitude skipped me - both my grandpas were engineers, my Dads Dad was from Newry, btw abdni have family there. I hope you find some discussion partners in this thread. I would enjoy reading along and following your progress. I’ve been trying, unsuccessfully, to convince my wife to allow us to put in a green in the backyard for the past couple of years. I just changed clubs to one that put in new greens last summer. It’s a ton of work and expense. I was on the wait list for five months and have been following the progress. Floridas growing season starts soon so the hope is that they will begin to fill in and nature over the summer months. I’ve read that a green takes about two years to truly perform properly, Best of success with your project
  4. Great group - congrats to those selected. Looking forward to reading about this test for certain.
  5. It is an issue - I play wedges with v soles so I’ve not concerned myself with the whole grind thing. However I’m strongly considering a new Ping to replace my 60. Just one piece of advice for you though - if you bent your 54 you also changed the bounce - if I remember rightly making it stronger decreased the bounce and if one were to weaken the lift it increases the bounce - but I could be wrong. When I used to game non v soles I followed the rule of something neutral on my gap wedge for bounce - more bounce on Sand wedge and low bounce on my 60. Ideally you’d go get fit to figure out the best grinds/bounces for you.
  6. Nothing like playoff hockey - have a great time at the game.
  7. Went to the range this afternoon - after church and the lightning debacle. 3-2 was not indicative of how much they were dominated by the Panthers today. At any rate bitter sweet day as it was probably my last range session at Bayou. The course may be in substandard shape but the practice facility is first class, good quality balls, lots of targets, three practice greens, two sided range so you can choose the wind direction that you want to practice in - I will miss it. I played Friday and shot 82 - three really poor wedges cost me a great round. In fact I made double from inside of 100 twice. So I worked on wedge shots, almost exclusively - I started with pitching wedge and hit it beautifully - certainly nothing that would have led to a double. Hit full A wedges and then started working on part wedges of differing lengths at different targets - I spent 45 minutes on that just alternating targets and wedges between the 52 and the 56. Tried a couple of full shots with the 60 but I never do that in a round and nothing on the range made me think I should change that protocol. Did hit 4 or 5 drivers and a couple of 7 irons before hitting a number of 40 yard wedges at the end of the session. For the first time in a long time I feel positive about my game. And I have a very good history at the club I’m moving to. My last round in the 60’s was there. My goal is to either shoot a 67 this summer or a 68 after October 7th. I still think I have a couple of those types of rounds in the tank if I have the time to practice and play.
  8. 1 or 1x? It really comes down to what you are looking for. I have not tried the new ball but was given a sleeve of chrome soft x ls at an outing last year. I understand that’s the for runner of the new ball and one that several of their tour players were using. The sleeve sat in my bag for a month or so - I broke one out when I was playing with one of my sons on a fairly open hole at my club. Hit a good drive, nothing seemingly exceptional. This son is not overly long - he and his brother shoot the same scores but they are about 50 yards apart all the time / Matt is a tad longer than me though - we got to our calls and I went to the short one - much to my surprise it was his by 15 yards and it remained that way the rest of the round. They do spin some but nothing like the 1x. Honestly I think that was spinning too much for me off the tee - I’ve been playing the x ls ever since and do like it. It’s a tad firmer than the Pro Vi which is also better for me than the 1x anymore. All of these balls are good - it’s really about finding the one that best matches your game,
  9. Well this is one that you are going to get everybody's favorite on - but my favorite may not be yours. I'd suggest you regrip a couple of clubs with different ones - or better if you have a back up set do it with those and see which one you like best. I'm older and have arthritis so my opinion may not be the best one to offer - the ability to absorb shock is my number one criteria for a grip these days.
  10. Much of this depends on where one plays and the conditions they face. I’d have huge issues with the set up you described where I currently live even if I played one course almost exclusively. Why? Wind - Florida has lots of it and since we can play year round the prevailing wind changes depending upon the season and times of day. You can easily see 5 clubs difference on your approach shot and many holes based on wind direction and time of year - I’d need a balanced set with even gapping, However when I lived in Indiana I played 80 percent of my rounds at one course. My set up was much more about the shots that I needed to play that course. I actually gamed two drivers, a 5 wood, 7 wood, 4 iron to PW, SW, LW It worked for that course - I had a 3 iron and 3 wood that would go in the bag if I traveled to other courses. Generally speaking, gapping matters a lot - but also you need to game the set that will allow you the best chance to shoot a good score.
  11. If you expand this pictures you will see the Bayou Eagle flying over the flag on 18. I think he’s the offspring of the original eagle that was dispossessed of his home when hurricane Irma the tree with his nest in it. The next fall a new nest was built and this smaller Eagle has been there ever since. Like many Florida courses we have an array of gators that come and go - they removed if they become too large or aggressive- generally we have them in the ponds on 6, 9 and 15. Not sure what my new club will have. I’ve certainly seen all kinds of wildlife there when I’ve played as a guest. Just haven’t played there enough to identified what is permanent and what is migratory. The course that my league plays at has a healthy dose of Eastern rattle snakes. Gators and rattlers are to be avoided.
  12. Congrats and keep the posts and participation coming. You are great addition to the forum community.
  13. Went to the range yesterday. I’m in between clubs so April is the month where I’m a member at both Bayou and Seminole Lake. It was hosting a women’s conference championship. It perfectly illustrates why I’m leaving. While it didn’t impact me I never received a communication from the club about a 3 day event that effectively took over our course. I played there Friday and have no idea how a tournament where you had to play by the rules of golf could be held there - way too many bare patches in the fairways to mark all of them, the traps are inconsistent and the greens were pinched two weeks ago and are still healing. However the course layout is great, it’s hosted PGA tour events, mini tour events, is the home course for a DI college team and home club to a lot of very strong players. It’s a great club for a younger person because it has tiered pricing for young professionals. I’m not playing enough to justify the monthly full fee of $650 and they aren’t showing enough commitment to the course to justify sticking around for when I retire in a couple of years - I don’t trust that anything will improve. Bayou does have great practice facilities and since the tournament chased the membership away I had the range to myself yesterday afternoon. I really struggled with my swing Friday and wanted to sort that out. Also I was playing after a funeral that had around 600 people in attendance. I think that was a factor in my play. There really wasn’t much sorting to do. I was hitting the ball fine. I finally decided to pit my Wilson D7 forged 9 iron verses my Srixon ZX 5 9 iron. I had a clear view of a pin that was 135 for me - a little long for 9 iron but I had a bit of a helping breeze and the balls on that range are excellent - they should be for what we pay - at any rate - I could not reach the pin with the D7 forged but I was very consistent and my PLM and eyes told me they were getting on the front of the green, 128 avg carry, 131 with the run out, nice dispersion. The first couple of Srixons were pulled - that’s my miss with those. After that though the results were eye opening, 133 yard average carry and 136 yards with the run out, higher launch, a bit less spin - I’m not a high spin player and range balls are not urethane although they should be for what we pay - yeah that’s a sore point for me. Interestingly the lofts through the bag are the same on both irons except for the pitching wedge which is a degree weaker in the Srixon and the A wedge was is 2 degrees weaker - Shafts are supposed to be the same the recoils in the Srixon’s are an iteration newer. By site the Srixon’s have a bit more offset but a slightly smaller platform. Swing weights are quite different though - Wilson’s are D2 and Srixons are C9. I prefer the feel of the heavier weight for certain. But the difference in results were convincing yesterday at least. I will try it again and also will try to play an evening round where the course is empty and I can try done head to head shoots with my gamer ball into a real green. But for now the Srixons are in and the Wilson’s are out. Best range session in a long time - hit 6 hybrid to a flag that was 169 and was flying it 171 dead straight - thats crazy long for me.
  14. Play golf more and have fun doing it.
  15. Enjoy - I have a school at my church my cool is to prevent kids from doing something stupid as our car pick up is right at that time.
