During tonight's community call I was asked if the weight difference was very noticeable and did I have any issues adjusting?

While the putters are significantly lighter,  because of the ulitralight shaft and grip the club is generally head heavy and when holding the putter is doesn't really feel any different than the heavier putters.  This evening I held both the seemore and MC3 held them one in each hand parallel to the ground;  they felt pretty much the same.  There really wasn't anything different to get used to.

    1.  Csnoil’s data is off the charts. Thank you!

    2.  Fully agreed in regards to feel - yes the lighter components make the swing weight of the SP putters heavier.  No they don’t feel that way. To me my Duke simply feels incredibly stable.

    3.  On Friday, my two righty playing partners tried my putter and it was hard to get it back in my bag.

    4.  All three of them tried the balance point test and were amazed at the difference between their putter and my SP.

    5.  The greens at my club are crazy undulating, multi tiered and tricky. I did not have a good ball stringing round and was on the wrong tier often. I had 0 3 putts. I’ve been averaging 1.8.

  2. Played for the first time in over two months. It was also my first time post cataract surgery. What a joy it was to be able to follow shots, see where the pin was on the green, notice the grain and the wildlife around me:

IMG_5530.png.d3d812fdd254f72b94ef6c0ec8cdab27.pngI’d love to say that I had a banner round - I did not, shot 86, my second highest score this year. But everything looks so different that it’s going to take some adjustment. I figured a bunch of stuff out during the round and hit my best shots were on the last four holes. My drive on 18 was a career long from the set of tees I’m currently playing - 25 yards past my buddy - he and I are normally neck and neck and he did not hit his drive poorly - I also got frisky on the gap wedge into the green on that one and was rewarded with a brutal putt that I read and executed almost perfectly.

Just fun to be back at it.

did you have any loft/lie adjustments?

I'm almost positive mine came unwrapped during testing and I assume that's because I had non-standard lie angles.  Wouldn't want the plastic to cause any slippage when trying to bend them 2* flat.

Mine were ordered two flat. It definitely came in plastic wrap. My understanding is that when you order a factory adjustment they have heads premade flat or upright - perhaps that’s only larger OEMs do perhaps someone will correct me.

I meant to take mine to the course yesterday when I played but chaos ensued at my house and I forgot it. I will need to run to the store after the UConn game today - I’m picturing a quick side trip to the club on the way. 🙂

IMG_3379.jpeg.9514a18451e5aeaced27287d611b5c91.jpegLove the look and feel of this putter.

IMG_3378.jpeg.3eeade8de534c2648ace6875ffd78d54.jpegResults aren’t bad, either.  Assuming I get cleared by my ophthalmologist tomorrow I’m going to play Friday.

I seemingly can’t miss on short putts. One of the things I truly intend to test, soon is my make percentage from 8 feet.  At my fitting Aki told me that he believed a single digit handicapper who regularly plays the same course should have a better make percentage than a touring pro in tournaments. 8 feet is their 50/50 point. Whenever I’ve checked mine has been around 6.5.

    We shall see

  5. Sorry I’m telling to Nick_D above - for many players are no tees to move up to - senior plates and women are often at the front already.

The smaller ball was under R and A rules. They simply adopted USGA rules because their pros and US pros complained about jumping back and forth when crossing continents.

You count play that ball in the US - legally.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but honestly a modern 6 iron is close to a 4 iron from the 70’s or 80’s - it is a long iron and i5’s and 6’s get hit often in tour events..

Regardless this won’t affect me because I’m not doing it. My plea is that no one else does either.

Personally I am looking forward to watching professional golfers hit longer irons and have bunkers & trees come back into play on courses with rich history that have been outgrown for years. As for myself, I really don't mind moving up a tee or grabbing an extra club. As someone else mentioned, there was a move from the small ball to the bigger one and now no one talks about it. Do I think rolling back the ball is the best way to achieve what the USGA & R&A want? No. If that's what they decide? Oh well, let’s hope for the best.

Would be nice but I don’t think they are ready to take on managing their own rules. But imagine if they did and got grint to be the handicap system. Would make for an interesting time in golf

As if it hasn’t been interesting enough. 😎

I really don’t care what they do. They clearly don’t care about me or the opinion of people like me or anyone else whose opinion differs from theirs. They will do as they please and I will do as I please in regards to playing golf. I’ve had fun playing competitive golf by USGA rules and I’ve had fun playing with friends with our own set of crazy, modified rules like strings, call backs, mulligans and such. I will just resort to playing goofy golf - I will be in my 70’s by the time this takes effect, my competitive USGA days are over. I feel bad for guys in their 40’s and 50’s who still like to play by the rules - it’s kind of late in the game to adjust to this radical a change.

But let’s see exactly what it is and the reaction of the tours and OEMs. Lots may happen yet.

It's going to be very interesting watching everyone try out these demo clubs.  I encourage everyone to spend some time manipulating weigh positions.  You'll be surprised by the dramatic difference in feel, and in turn strike, repositioning the weight can make.  I posted a chart in my review that documented it, but if you truly get it right and match the weight positioning to your swing (hence the term Swing Weight Matching), it can make an appreciable difference in your ball striking.

Is there some sort of guide that says - this setting produces this result or helps to correct this fault?

  9. Second eye surgery in the books. Got to the practice green today. Rolled in 3 consecutive 10 footers right off the bat and then hit two beautiful 40 footers up the hill one to tap in the other to about 4 feet that I subsequently jarred. I’ve been practicing on the carpet almost daily the past few weeks. It was good to get on a real green to confirm what I’m seeing at home - it’s very easy to get the ball rolling on line at the intended speed with this putter.

I ordered an SMS Pro 7i at the beginning of the year, with extra weights, tested with the shaft I used to play… smashed my expectations

I then tested it again with an axiom 125x shaft and improved the numbers even more, but went with lighter weight shaft.

My current iron set up is 3-PW SMS Pro with Axiom 105x. Swing weight at a D5 with Winn Dri-Tac Lite grips.

Biggest thing is the position of the weights… my set blends from a heel bias in the long irons to a toe bias in the short irons.

Did you figure that out through trial and error or with a fitter?

I could argue for a new thread or keeping it here. I will leave that decision in @GolfSpy BOS hands. Your call…

  11. Thanks for posting this -

I will have to test out his theory about mid irons.  I suspect it's true.  I've known for years that irons are over-rated in my game - in regards to usage its putter, driver, wedges, fairways/irons toss up.  Some of that is me dependent, some course dependent.  At my course I could shoot in the mid 70-s and only hit an iron 5 or 6 times - the par 4's are either long (fairway wood) or shortish (wedge), there's only one of the four par 3's where I'm guaranteed to have an iron and if I hit good enough drives I'll have wedges on the par 5's, also.

I would say that's another factor in a fitting/equipment purchase that often goes unmentioned - where do you play most and how does your game fit into it.

Enjoyed the testing reviews so much, I jumped on the Edel Black Friday try a SMS 7i for 60 days (just pay shipping) on them.  I know I’m going to want a full set at the end of the test….

What did you order for yours?  Mine is with a steel fiber 95R, 2 flat everything else standard.  I also got a very nice thank you note from 'Doug Coors.  I thought that was a great touch.  I don't think of Edel as that small an OEM for the  CEO to be doing that.  I will gladly post a picture when it arrives and do a little revie.

I am a bit hazy on weights.  It comes with weights in it, correct?  What are all the additional weights that you could order.  Perhaps our original testers could enlighten us or refresh us on that.  I have a two-week vacation smack dab in the middle of this - starts at 11:30 on December 25th and runs through January 8th.  I'm hoping to hit a lot of golf balls and putts during that time.

  13. Quick update, I had my cataract surgery last week. It went great, 20-20 in that eye from 20/400. My eye sight is already better than I can ever remember. I just got cleared to resume all normal activities except swimming so it will be off to the putting green for me later - once the dilation wears off.

I have been rolling some putts inside on the carpet. I was not supposed to bend down so I had some balls out in my study pre surgery. 🙂

second eye is next week and I will be back on the course again two weeks from today.
